We had Michael Bonsby install a new heat pump system in November 2019. In January 2020, I discovered that the fused disconnect for the air handler had been sized incorrectly, causing two 60-amp fuses to melt, creating a hazardous condition in my home and leaving me without heat on a 17 degree day. When I called the company to have the problem remediated, they showed up unprepared and were unable to fix the problem. Despite the presence of a warranty, I had to fix the problem myself so that my pipes didn't freeze. The company did install a new disconnect correctly some days later but dragged their feet on reimbursement, leading the field service manager to reimburse me for my fix out of his own pocket. Recently my air handler's condensate drain pan cracked. It took a threat of legal action to get the company to fulfill their warranty service obligations. The crew that showed up to replace the drain pan did not appear to know what they were doing, and it looked like they were going to break the evaporator coil. They put the unit back together omitting the gasket that forms an air seal at the condensate drain port, then needed to take the thing apart again once I pointed out the missing gasket. At the moment the condensate drain trap is leaking on my floor and the service covers are not installed correctly. read more

My furnace was not firing up properly (Thermostat would call for heat, blower would come on, furnace would ignite for about 4 seconds then cutoff, repeat once, then blower would just run constantly until you powered down the furnace -- nice electric bill for that!) I was under maintenance with another company, who came out for the "No Heat" call, and their tech (that will be ANOTHER write-up) completely mis-diagnosed the issue and created other issues - didn't know all this at this point - came and recycled power and it started - said if it kept occurring I should consider replacing the HVAC unit (12 years old) because it meant the circuit board was going on the fritz. So - problem progressively gets worse - to the point I spend hours trying to get the gas furnace to fire up....figure - well I guess it's time for a new one. So I call Michael Bonsby HVAC - things start REAL GOOD - get an appointment with "David" for Feb 10th (2021), comes out, arrives on time. I explain what's happening and he says it's the flame sensor detector that's dirty - opens the unit, cleans it and the furnace fires right up, he identifies some potential issues that indicate the unit has other things that need to be cleaned / etc and that most places would prob. charge $750 - $1000 as its outside of standard maintenance. Closes up the unit and we go to discuss my options. We discuss several items including new furnaces, because David says the builder installed unit is WAY over powered (like 100K BTUs and my house only needs 60K). I'm taking all this down, asking questions, etc. David quotes me two units - a recommended one that would be properly sized and get the job done, and then a more expensive one that will provide noticeably more comfort esp. in summer (SEER rating difference from 16 to 20). We also look at and discuss my unit that handles the upstairs - David makes lots of recommendations about the insulation levels, how the ducting system was not setup properly, etc, etc. I'm taking notes, asking questions..... As we wrap up, I ask David to quote me both types of units for install, and to quote with any additional discounts if I do both main and upstairs units at the same time (which he says he would give me additional discount). David says he will email me those quotes right away. Nearly two weeks later - haven't heard a peep out of him. Reading back over the other negative ratings....this seems to be a habit with this company....severely undermines my trust in them to back whatever work I might have had them do. Oh.....and to boot, NOT THE PROBLEM with the furnace failing to stay lit. Another guy (I was having several vendors come out and quote me new units) looked at the system, and within FOUR MINUTES correctly ID'd the problem ---- which was that the air intake (which has a filter right before the furnace chamber ---- was CLOGGED with leaves (which we will discuss on the other vendor that I had a maintenance contract with). This was also contributing to the dirty flame sensor. Cleared the clog and Viola!!!! furnace works perfectly - guy tells me I still have another 3 - 5 years before I need to consider a new one. $142 for the service call and to fix the problem (and he fixed other issues my "maintenance" vendor had created). That vendor is RA Home Services -- Nestor, he's getting a 5-star review from me. read more

I generally don't like flat-fee pricing, and Bonsby's flat free pricing is outrageous. Over $600 to install a thermostat, where the thermostat itself retails for under $100? Sheesh. And the price list is top secret, the office will tell you they don't have access to it. So you only can make the decision after the tech comes out, so even if you know what needs to be done, you can't make an informed decision ahead of time. read more

Make sure you read your contract before dealing with this firm. I had them do a very large HVAC contact and they never returned to install the registers. I think the system is working fine, but it would have been nice to know that my painters were responsible for register installation. read more

Very surprised and disappointed by their unresponsiveness. Attempted four times to follow up on the estimate provided by David Cartwright regarding a humidifier/dehumidifier/air purification system for our home. The conversation that we had we he visited our home was informative; and he assured me that if we had any questions we could email him as he handed me a business card on his way out the door. We emailed him a few days later. That was Dec 5, 2019.... since then I've called 3 times and politely requested a response to our email. The phone rep said she reached out to him to let him know. My last call on Jan 3,2020, I shared with her what I've written here, resent my email in case it was lost, reacched out via their Contact Us page (https://www.michaelbonsbyhvac.com/contact/), and explained to her that it was my final attempt. Still no response. Unfortunate, because they had a potential customer, ready and willing to purchase. Brings doubt in our mind that they are not confident in the solutions that they propose. Had a service call for my AC fan not working. Company was responsive and technician was on time and even called ahead when leaving the prior call to let me know when he would arrive. He opened up the unit with the not working blower fan and got it going for me. I was told the fan is failing and will need to be replaced. I noted the capacitor attached to the blower fan and asked about replacing it. Was told it would be replaced with the fan. I said ok and said I would be in touch after my vacation to look into replacing it ($400-$500). Having some time, I did research online and determined that my scenario where the fan motor is humming but won't start, generally means the capacitor is bad. Which would make sense since the capacitor was 23 years old. I ordered on amazon for $13. Replaced it and motor starts right up. I don't understand why technicians don't carry the capacitors with them on the truck and why they won't replace them. I know they aren't all standard, but when I search for them on Amazon, mine are always at the top of the list, so some must be common. I would have paid $75 for them to replace the part. read more

Don't waste your time with this company. I had someone from their company come out to look at my HVAC system to see if duct sealing would improve flow and efficiency. I took off time from work to make the appointment - but he didn't make it. Everyone has their off days - so I gave him a pass. We set up another time to meet and he made it - but was an hour late. Once he got here, he tested the system and told me that they could guarantee a significant improvement in performance by sealing the ducts. He told me he'd send me a quote shortly so that we could get started the following week. That was almost 3 weeks ago. I gave him a week - heard nothing so I texted him and got no response. I then called the headquarters and the day after he finally got back to me. He gave me a price and told me he'd send the final proposal "in a few minutes". That was 8 days ago...I still don't have a proposal. Had I gone with someone else - the work could have already been done by now. read more

I had an appointment with him at noon for an estimate. He came early at 1150a and left 6 mins later. I know because my front door camera captured him coming and going, as I was heading home to meet him for the appointment. He didn't even wait until the scheduled time. Nor did he bother to call if he had to leave for an emergency. Called his secretary. She said she was going to try to reach him and call me back. Never got a call back. He's not even professional enough to communicate, and this fool left his business card as if I'm going to actually call him back to give him a second chance? Oh hell no! Job: Installation of Mini-split in sunroom Pros: Chris S performed assessment using software/math to determine needs of sunroom AC/Heating. This company was the only one to do so. Competitive price, arrived on time, flexible and performed scope of work well. Cons: a bit of brick dust leftover but overall, wasn't terrible. A few handmarks on walls, but otherwise, was pretty clean. Given the job, I'm not surprised. I just left 2 other 3-star reviews for other people, but these guys get 5 stars for overall experience. Doing a basement remodel and wanted to get some duct work moved as well as get some "handy-man" work that the previous homeowner had done fixed. They made time in their schedule to come out and give me a quote the day after I called, talked me through the work to be done and had a quote sent over to me the same day. Rip off costs. They say flat costs and don't tell upfront. They charged 265$ for replacing a part that costs 16$ at home Depot and it takes 10 min to install. When I asked about why it is so costly, tech said part is costly... I would never use them and recommend to stay away. After I paid the check, I realised the average costs for similar service and tried to talk to them. They were chuckling over the over charged fees and asked if I signed their pad as if u can't do anything now.. never been ripped off before.... I was really excited to be supporting a local company when we decided to replace our HVAC unit. I completed the online form and received a response very quickly. They were able to schedule the appointment rather quick as well. My appointment time and and went with out the arrival or even a call from the tech. I sent an FYI email to the company hoping to receive some reason as to the techs no show. Nothing happened. The next day I was sent an email from the company to review my tech and his service. I was honest and asked to get a call back. Again nothing. I have no idea if they are cheaper, better qualified or a great company to deal with, but I can tell you they don't show up or respond. read more

The AC was making a weird sound so we reached out to Michael Bonsby and I'm glad we did. The sound was nothing (just a loud condensate pump) but the check of the system revealed low coolant that had probably been the case since the system was installed several years ago. I knocked off a star because the cost of the coolant was higher than it should have been based on information found through my excellent google-fu, but I will use Bonsby again because they did a good job, didn't try to upsell me, and were honest about the pump not needing to be replaced. read more

This company does great work without a doubt. They went above and beyond for me and have for other family members and neighbors throughout the years. It is nice to have a company you can trust, count on and not have to worry about calling back for issues. Most recently they did an installation for my aunt. Her comfort level has greatly improved with the properly sized system, and she is very happy with the new system. Our system has worked flawlessly since its installation in 2012. The temperatures in all of the rooms are now even or within a degree or so since we installed the two stage heat pump. I am very impressed with this company's level of service. It goes far beyond other companies in the area that I have experienced. They do the job right the first time and have been there for whatever we need down the road. We agree and price to move my unit about 5 feet and modification of the duct work He sent me that contract and he ask for 50% deposit. Regarding the state of Maryland home-improvement commission Any company the ere licensed in Maryland the maximum the company can collect due to signed a contract is 33% that is the law. I meet with him twice and I told him to send me the insurance certificate for lability and Worker's Compensation and the next day he call and he said to me I'm sorry but I'm can do the job. I found Michael Bonsby Plumbing through HomeAdvisor. I was in under a horribly tight deadline and cash crunch for a sewer line connection to an investment property which was already under contract. Joe Bonsby came out to the property the very next day, scoped the work in more detail than the other bidders, and was the lowest cost to boot! Joe worked professionally through all the property's challenges, and even stepped in to tackle one other plumbing issue for us at the last minute. He shepherded the permit through the (not so fun) process, and worked seamlessly with the contractor doing other last-minute work on the site. Joe is fabulous!!!! So, l give these folks points for being courteous and prompt. Their quoted price of $1600 to replace just a motor on a residential air handling unit was outrageous. I own a number of properties in Pittsburgh, PA and have had to replace far more HVAC systems than I would prefer, so I have at least an entry level idea about what things should cost. Even accounting for regional price and wage rate differences it was out of line. Especially given that I was able to have the work done by another company for half. I don't know. Maybe the fellow thought because I had a friend on site to let him in while I was traveling he could BS a huge price. Maybe the guy who did the work for half sold me junk. I tend to think the $1600 was just outrageous. Fortunately I paid the $59 diagnostic fee (reasonable) with AMEX. I'll be watching the bill to make sure I don't get hit with any spurious charges. I was extremely disappointed in my recent experience with this company. I contacted them due to their supposed expertise in Mitsubishi "ductless" AC systems - I had in fact used them in the past to install such a system at my prior home. They sent someone to look at my system and gave me very little information about what was actually wrong, and no information on how to fix it or what it would cost. But they did charge me $89 for the visit. I would have been happy to use them to do the repair if they had actually followed up with this information. I have called and emailed multiple times asking for a diagnosis and quote but have received no reply. The only call I received was to make sure they had my credit card number correct. Waste of money and very poor customer service. read more

Two stars- the rating reflects the price, not the technician. My compressor went out, and I called Bonsby for service (only HVAC service I could find willing to work on a Sunday without an "emergency" surcharge.) The tech was punctual, courteous, and professional. To be fair, I knew what the charge was up front and agreed to pay it, rather than pay another diagnostic fee and face an unknown charge from a different company. Bonsby charged a total of $564 to diagnose and repair the faulty compressor. $89 for the service charge, $268 for part and install on a two-pole contactor, and $207 for part and install for a 30/5 capacitor. The whole repair job took less than half an hour. I inquired about the cost of labor, since the cost of the parts themselves is negligible (about $30 total from Home Depot), and was told that parts and labor are billed as one (i.e., flat fee per replacement). If I had it to do over, I would go with another company. The fix worked, but those in the same situation will likely want to consider less costly alternatives. read more

I had our heat pump replaced by Michael Bonsby two years ago. I got the best offer from them and the job was done quickly and neatly. They were careful not to create a mess and cleaned up after they finished. When I needed to sign a document, they came to my work instead of dragging me across town. I can't think of a better professional experience I had. I signed up for maintenance, though I didn't think I needed it very much while the equipment was new, and I got valuable advice about my thermostat settings. I have to give a BIG thanks to the people at Michael Bonsby. From the start, my experience with them has been great. They've been extremely accommodating and performed a phenomenal job. I have had nothing but great service from them beginning with the pleasant ladies answering the phones and their knowledgeable, friendly and punctual technicians (a rare thing nowadays). I first used Michael Bonsby to install a Mitsubishi ductless system in my house, but after getting such great service from them, I called again to order a replacement for my furnace boiler and water heater. Their prices are very competitive (believe me I shopped them around) in particular, when you take into consideration that they are an established company and they offer full guarantees on the product and services. I've make huge mistakes in the past with trying to save a few dollars by going with an unknown AC contractor who couldn't never be reached or located afterwards. I have learned my lesson; so I was delighted to find Michael Bonsby. I'm not the easiest customer to work with, and I'm grateful to Manny, the supervisor, for going the extra mile in helping me re-position one of the AC units after it was installed.
