Don't be taken by their story that the owner is selling the building to turn into condos and "everything must go" 70% off sale. They tried to pull this sales pitch on me until I read in this forum that they used the same line on a customer in 2016. Read all the reviews (including the ones not recommended) and you'll see that it is a common high pressure sales pitch. Thank you to the previous reviewer who set me straight. Maybe this business has decent items in their showroom but I will not do business with people who try to deceive me. Certificate of authentication? Promised but they didn't happen to have it available at the time of sale. Free installation promised but then told they would "do their best". Chandelier made in Germany? Maybe, maybe not. They have several show rooms with different names on each but you can recognize them by the amount of stuff crammed in and all the shiny chandeliers and sparkly things visible from the street. Expect them to use every hard sell technique in the book. Great packing and prompt shipping of the things we bought. Everyone loves the chairs, but I am still not sure whether we paid full retail or got a great deal. read more

The staff was extremely professional, knowledgeable, answered all of my questions, and patiently guided me through the extensive options available in the store. I've walked by this place a hundred times, and never walked in till last week. Inside is one of the most amazing collections of furnishings and other special items (like a grand piano, massive chandeliers, solid gold chess set) I have ever seen. None of it would work in my condo, and I probably couldn't afford any of it anyway. COMPLETELY ENCHANTING EXPERIENCE~while casually walking through Chinatown my husband and I found Michael's and immediately fell in love with this store and their management. The art, furniture, antiques, chandeliers, absolutely everything is stunningly gorgeous. We met David who greeted us as if we were family and a lifetime bond was formed. Yes, the store has an exquisite collection of antiques and fine art; walking around is like experiencing another world, one filled with a beauty and elegance of times past. We purchased three pieces for our home that will be passed down for generations. We were introduced to Tony, an absolutely charming young man who understands how to take care of clients. One reason I am writing this post, truly, is to make sure ANY of you NEVER are blindsided by "Michael's" or "Lovell's Gallery" in San Francisco. They start with massively inflated prices and then drastically reduce them for some supposedly urgent reason, making customers feel they are really missing out if they don't purchase on-the-spot. Beyond that, they lie like rugs, haha, about supposed value, quality, etc which we found to be blatant untruths. They told us they were closing SOON so BUY NOW. Years later they are STILL in business! It was all B.S. We were suckered into buying $10,000 pieces that turned out to be worth less than a third of the cost. DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST...use the computer! We sure wish we had. We like the pieces AND we soooo OVERPAID for them. In honesty, I wonder if the people who wrote the positive review here ever researched the true value of what they purchased. "Bought by his grandfather"....huge doubt about that!. read more

You might recognize this place as "the place with the weird frogs out front" -- but I've always considered that a good quality. By far the best place I've found to buy gifts for my mother, given that I don't like buying jewelry as gifts. Michael has enormous and eclectic selection of glass and stone sculptures (I saw two different kinds of roosters today. TWO). The staff is friendly and helpful, and they always do a good job of packaging up purchases (never had anything break on a plane trip afterward). To sweeten the deal, it's located very close to downtown and Union Square! Two thumbs up. read more

I have purchased a handful of things from Michaels over the past couple of years, and I have ALWAYS been treated fairly, and never felt pushed or uncomfortable. I almost feel like I'm visiting old friends every time I come in! Perhaps that is their "selling technique" as some have mentioned, but if it is, I don't mind because I always leave in a better mood than when I first walked in the store. I DON'T always buy something, but any time I am in the neighborhood (which is not super often)I just love looking around at all the beautiful things they have. The only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 si because I live in Marin, and sometimes it's a trek for me to get to this part of the city, but when I do go it's worth it. I have a gorgeous chandelier and a beautiful rug, which are the "big ticket" items that i have purchased in the past. And of course the delivery and installation of the chandelier was 5-star. I would definitely check this place out if you are looking for something unique that will catch the attention of your guests or even yourself for years to come. It's worth it and you will not have to worry about the level of service you will receive. I have purchased furniture, fixtures, accessories, artwork, etc. from plenty of other places, which are many times cheaper, but you get what you pay for and that goes for service too. Usually AFTER most other businesses/galleries have your money you are pretty much a nobody to them as they move on to the next customer, but I have never felt that way when doing business with Michaels. We were in San Francisco in October and decided to look for a piece of furniture we needed. We walked into Michael and were almost overwhelmed with the number of beautiful pieces they had. We talked with a salesperson, who, when we explained what we were looking for, turned us over to the owner. He took us to the second floor of the larger building. We had several pieces we could have chosen from. We weren't rushed, and he knew quite a bit about the pieces that his grandfather had purchased. We bought a Chinese chest and a piece of art glass. They shipped the pieces to us and they arrived promptly. We would highly recommend this store. read more

very charming family owned business. Huge inventory consisting of several stories in 3 major store fronts within a half block of each other. Great variety of art and decor, you will surely find something you love. We purchased two engravings, a set of cut crystal urns and bowl, and a statue. Shipping and handling are free for most items and it is fun to haggle a bit over prices. I am very happy with everything I purchased. It was delivered to my home on the other side of the country within a week of my return and the freight company called and made arrangements for delivery (that they actually met). I will be buying more as my needs and wallet allow. read more

The store is filled with an interesting and elaborate collection of antiques and art from all over which I found quite impressive. I was particularly interested in their rug collection. The salesperson was very helpful in helping me narrow down the type of rug that suited my taste and budget. After a friendly negotiation, we ended up right where I was comfortable including shipping to my Nashville home. These are the types of experiences that make a loyal lifetime customer. I've walked past this place dozens of times, admiring a large chess set in the window. I finally went in and inquired about it, they said the retail price was $110k!!! Hilarious, so I played them for the next 45 mins exploring all 4 floors making them think I was gonna spend. The sales tactics are pathetic, use of impending events are laughable. Let me first say that there are some awesome furnishings in these galleries. If you want over-the-top European and Asian REPRODUCTIONS, then this is the place. The reason I am only giving three stars is that the employees (who latch onto you like lamprey eels) will tell you these galleries are full of priceless antiques, when in actuality they are reproductions and some down right fakes. Again-- if you don't care about repros or fakes-- this is the place for you. But, I was disturbed to watch them selling the idea of investing in a great antique to folks who didn't seem to know it was not actually an antique. They tried to pass off a beautiful crystal chandelier as Baccarat-- which was a fake. They said this stone inlaid table was Louis XVI, which was totally a modern reproduction. As beautiful as these pieces might be, they are not what they say they are. I checked with two good friends in auctions houses in my home city who confirmed they were well aware of Michael's in San Fran... lol Just BEWARE. read more

I bought several pieces last week at this store and was very pleased with my purchases. A bronze piece along with a desk and several other items were included in my purchase. All of it was being shipped to my home since I had flown to San Francisco. I was considering purchasing additional items and decided to check out their website that night. They did not have a website, but I did find muliple reviews that scared me after reading. I worried all night because I believed I was taken advantage off. On the otherhand I checked out the Better Business Bureau site and they were giving them an A-. I decided to return to the store to cancel my order and ask for a refund. I fiqured if the bad reviews were true, they would not cancel my order or issue a refund. I was wrong, they were more than willing to cancel. Since the items had shipped, I would have to pay for shipping, but I was ok with that. After discussing my concerns with the staff, they answered my questions to my satisfaction and I did not cancel. I am waiting for my items to arrive. I don't regret my purchases, but I am anxious for everything to arrive safely. After everything arrives, I will update the website. read more

One of the best buying experiences ever! Walked past the store while visiting San Francisco, did a double take looking at the amazing art and furniture displays. Next thing you know my wife and I are in the massive 5 story showroom looking around in awe. Of course, I just wanted to look and then say, "Great stuff, let's go!" But, I'm glad we stayed and met and talked with Barack, Tony and the team. Very friendly approach as they let us take our time as we looked at items that would go very nicely in our home back in Australia. When I raised the objection, "but, we live in Australia!" Barack repied, "Great! We've got a container on the dock right now going to Australia." Then he proceeded to offer an amazing deal on the items we thought would be awesome to own! The deal was so good even I couldn't refuse ... So, about 2 months after our trip to the USA, a big truck pulled up to our house with our shipment. Out came the 2 huge Italian paintings, Sorento living room set w/coffee table, marble top dinning room table and 6 chairs, living room dresser, oriental study desk, fine wooded jewelry box, 2 china sets, fancy love seat (my wife saw it in the elevator and said, "can I have that?") a top of the line oriental (fancy) rug, a Michael Angelo ceramic (capo de mente) and probably a few other things I've left out. I was very impressed with the packing; very secure; done by experts; no damage ... amazing! Now, we relive our crazy shopping experience at Michaels every day as we enjoy the beautiful furniture and arts we bought. Like I said, best buying experience I ever had! read more
