My husband and I went to Mj's last year for our anniversary and had one the best experiences ever. Great food friendly staff just was perfect. This year we decided to go again for our anniversary the food was amazing but the service just wasn't up to par and we were super disappointed. We ordered a appetizer the oil with roasted garlic dipping sauce with bread. And our server asked up for more bread and we said yes please never came back with bread . Then when she brought the salads I asked for salt and pepper and she never brought the salt and pepper. I was able to finally ask a different waitress but my salad was almost gone. Then she hardly ever came back after we got our main food. We also ended up ordering dessert with a different waitress not sure what happen to ours but in the ended I will say the food was very very good. read more

This place was highly recommended to us so my fiance and I decided to check it out last Friday. The service was a bit slow at first. After receiving the menu we waited at least 15 minutes before anyone came to check on us. The restaurant is also extremely dark; I had to use my phone's flashlight to read the menu. Despite the dim lighting and initially slow service, the night ended fantastically. The food was amazing! We both ordered the Friday Special ($28), which came with a glass of house wine and salad. I chose the Alaskan Codfish for my entree. The crust on the fish was crunchy and the fish was flaky and smooth. I was surprised the sides were such generous portions. What a hidden gem this place is! My husband and I went on a Thursday night the other week and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The restaurant is located a bit off the beaten path, in the Carlton Arms plaza off SR 64. Walking up, there is a lighted garden trellis leading to an outdoor patio. The ambiance inside is quite romantic, with soft lighting and candlelit tables. We were seated right away and quickly studied the menu and specials. And there were so many things that looked tempting! We began with a dipping oil for the hot, homemade bread that you could tell just came out of the oven. The dipping oil consisted of Herbs de Provence roasted garlic, extra virgin olive oil and a balsamic glacé. All of my favorite things. I also began with the French onion soup which was incredible, probably one of the best I have ever had. My husband had the house salad which I tried a bite of, very good. It came with a side of the restaurant's house dressing which is a creamy balsamic and sherry dressing. We also enjoyed a glass of the house cabernet, and we were both very impressed with how smooth the house wine was! Oh and I almost forgot, we were given a complimentary taste of the soup of the day which was a clam chowder, mmm! For our main meals, my husband went with the Filet which was finished with garlic herb butter. I went with one of the specials, a Marsala Filet which was finished with a mushroom wine sauce. It was an excellent cut of meat and was huge! I could barely finish half of it. It came with a side of au gratin potatoes and seasonal veggies. Overall, we were very impressed with the quality of food at Michael John's as well as the service. I went there for my birthday. I have to say that I've never been required to buy a dessert for $10 in order for them to wish me happy birthday, so that was the first. I should've known by looking at their menu seeing that they have at three dollars per person cake is free if you bring your own birthday cake to serve people, that they are overpriced and under serving. Their so-called think that they're known for which is their Delmonico steak was less than stellar. It was not only under season but it seems to be not seasoned at all. it's sad to say, but Texas roadhouse steakhouse has the same weight of a ribeye with a complete dinner with hot side or a salad which is cool if you want it for 2199, and I actually enjoy that more than my two sides which were cold and not supposed to be cold. My brussels sprouts were not warm and my au gratin potatoes were not even warm. The bread and butter were OK. The firecracker shrimp were quite good and the shrimps are very large and very fresh, And my tomato Gorgonzola soup was quite good. Unfortunately, the main and the main sides were not even close to being what I would expect the price tag that they put it at. For my first hour there they had more servers than customers, and then a party of four came in so there was a total of nine customers in my room and five servers. Do you think that with so many servers you would have absolute top-notch service, but it was not so. Don't order the coffee it is really really really bitter and undrinkable. The crème brûlée was OK. For $100, I don't think so.I wish that I would've gone someplace else for my birthday dinner. read more

Our first choice for a restaurant on Xmas Eve was closed. We didn't think to call and see if they were open. In our scramble to find a new place, we saw MJ's on Yelp. It was nearby, good reviews, and the food looked great. When we got there, it was clear that our casual beach attire was in stark contrast to the people who had dressed up for a holiday dinner at a $$$ restaurant. Luckily the staff welcomed us in and sat us regardless, even though we had not made a reservation. We were sat near the kitchen door, which for some might be seen as a problem, but we were just happy to be sat. We ordered appetizers, salad, and out entrees. All came out timely and perfectly. We even got a complimentary cup of clam chowder soup. I am not a fan of clam chowder, but I tried it anyways. It was delicious. My salad was a "Dirty Caesar", word to the wise this is a very strong and very aged salad. It is not for the weak-tongued. The bread was simply amazing, and the word around the table was that the entrees were equally amazing. Presentation and taste. The staff were also very courteous and attentive. They did a very nice job of addressing our needs throughout the night. Since this was a vacation, I doubt I'll have a chance to return here, but it left a lasting impression for the next time I visit the Tampa area. This was such a huge surprise! My wife and I came across from West Palm for business and needed a place to eat dinner. We looked for a place with seafood on our way to our hotel and came across MJ's on Yelp, so we decided to give it a try. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeeted by the nicest people, who let us sit wherever we wanted. We picked a nice cozy table by the bay window and ordered a nice Cabernet. They soon brought us hot baked bread with an "amuse bouche " small soup with blended roasted southern vegetables and fontina cheese. Holy crap it was soooo good I wanted a bucket of it to go home. I also ordered a bowl of their beer/cheese soup, which was so good I wanted to lick the bottom of my bowl. I ordered the lobster tail special and my wife ordered the crab scampi special and we upgraded our vegetables. Shoot - I could have eaten just an entire plate of the vegetables, they were amazing. But then I sank my teeth into the lobster tail and was amazed at how tender and moist it was. Being from New England and working on lobster boats, I have never had a lobster tail that was this tender. Usually it's the tougher meat but not here. My wife's crab was succulent and absolutely delicious. There is no skimping on portions here. She got 8 oz of crab meat and we both ate every bite. Overall, the wait staff, the ambiance, and of course the food made our experience one we won't ever forget. It was truly one of the best meals I have ever had. I can only hope we have the chance to come back and enjoy another experience at MJ's. Shoot - we might have to drive 4 hours again just to come back here! Awesome, awesome, awesome! read more

We have been dining at MJ's for 3 years. The food and service have always been outstanding. Last night was disappointing. The server barely acknowledged us, for ever dish that came out it took longer than normal, ordered French press coffee for 2 people (received one and they never came back to press it as they stated they would), server basically ran by to drop of check before dessert was offered (which we did want), server then rudely dropped a spoon on the table after we ordered dessert and immediately turned his attention to another table. 2 stars only because the food was great as always. Went here with my wife on our honeymoon for a fancy dinner. We had reservations and were sat right away. Our waitress finally got to us about 10-15 mins after we sat down. We ordered the roasted garlic, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar to go with our bread. It was just olive oil and roasted garlic with no balsamic vinegar at all. Very nasty. We also ordered the blackened shrimp as an appetizer and never got it. Waited about 40 mins for our food. My wife got "Signature" beer and cheddar soup. Tasted bitter and almost burnt. Couldn't handle more than 2 bites. Maybe it's just how the taste was supposed to be but definitely wasn't pleasant to us. I got the Delmonico steak medium rare with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Meat was a little tough and under seasoned. Not worth the $62 price that was placed on it. The sides were the only good things. Overall the place was over priced and not worth it at all as my wife got sick from the soup. Severely disappointed and ruined a night. Never coming here every read more

It's been a long time since I've had a dining experience that was this good from the time I walked in the door to the time I walked out. The service was p,easant and attentive, the atmosphere friendly and inviting. The food was phenomenal. The complementary soup for tasting, fresh bread were a great start. We have the calamari and crab cakes for an app that was fantastic. The delmonico prime was the best steak I have had since Florence Italy. We had an outstanding dinner experience. The onion soup was one of a kind. It had a unique flavor and texture. My wife ordered the crispy duck and I ordered the chateaubriand tips in a garlic honey sauce. My wife does not like beef but one taste and she basically took over my meal.
