July 19, 2024 : Two for dinner before a show Quick review, may update at some point. Our first visit, service was good, the place is spotless and decor is conservative and welcoming. Beet salad could have had some more greens but beets and greens on it were fresh and tasty. tempura cauliflower was okay but the cauliflower might have been boiled or cooked and THEN fried. Was kind of potato/pasty not fresh, crisp and not el dente. pretty salty. Vegetarian meatball was very good and about the only vegetarian / vegan / whole food oriented item. it was salty. Something else for the menu as all the meat dishes had cream and oil and unacceptable sides and vegetable accompaniment..... My wife got the beef and it was kinda tough and an odd sort of cut?? tenderloin hunk or something. Good, could use some menu or selection improvements to make it exceptional?

My husband took me here for my birthday because he had read that Marcel was a nice place and a good spot for a special occasion. But we were really disappointed. Yes, the food is good with lovely presentation, and it was neat that the chef/owner stopped by to say hello. But that's where the good points stop. Our server, Chris, was "gruff" as my husband would say, and was almost rude to us. Also, even though it was my birthday, dessert was NOT on the house, and they didn't even bother with a candle and/or singing. So the restaurant did not make the evening feel special at all. We will not be going back.

Actually, just get there early anyway because the pastry items are fresher/better. There's indoor and outdoor seating. I typically skip trying to park next to it and just go to the garage and walk over. The service is more attentive than a typical French cafe overseas but not as on top of you as a typical place in the US. You can definitely order at the counter in French if you want to and I've had a waiter there flip between English, French, Spanish, and another language (maybe Romanian?) in one order. The sandwiches I've had were all lovely, and had a little side salad that could benefit from a better dressing (they serve an okay vinaigrette though). I've yet to encounter a single bad pastry - the elcairs, mousse cakes, and flaky pastries like chausson pommes are on par with the typical boulangerie/pattisserie in France and don't make me think US adaptation at all. Prices are reasonable.

I got the poularde crepe, wanting something savory. This was solid and tasty. Everyone else got nice little meals as well. I do feel like the portion and the quality is a little lacking for the price. That being said, I don't know that there are better French options in the area. I also got a palmier pastry and I should have gotten a croissant, the palmier tasted a little stale. The locale was adorable, with beautifully tiles tables really setting the scene. Overall, not terrible! Worthwhile if you're really feeling French.

The owners are a married couple with the husband in the front and the wife as the chef in the back. Classic French dishes executed very well with proper technique and delicious flavors. The mussels were my favorite although I rarely choose to eat seafood - which says a lot!! The escargot was buttery and soft. The bread was homemade with a stunning flower shaped butter which was well seasoned. They gave us an amuse bouche which was creamy vegetable soup - delicious! Scallops were seared nicely with a unique tangerine beurre blanc which complimented them well. Finished with a delicious gooey chocolate lava cake. The dinner, ambiance, and service were phenomenal. His enthusiasm and hospitality set the tone for the entire evening, and it's clear that the staff shares the same passion for creating an exceptional dining experience. Everyone works together seamlessly to make sure every guest feels welcomed and well cared for. We chose Antoine's to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary, and it couldn't have been a better choice. It's the perfect restaurant for a special occasion. The food was outstanding. We started with the mussels, and I've never seen such an extensive selection anywhere else--there must have been at least 10 different preparations to choose from. The duck and the scallops, both house specialties, were cooked perfectly and absolutely lived up to their reputation. To finish, we shared the French puff pastry filled with warm, melted Belgian chocolate. It was pure heaven and the perfect ending to an unforgettable meal. If you're looking for an authentic Belgian-French dining experience with incredible food and even better hospitality, Antoine's is a true hidden gem in Sarasota. Unfortunately, this visit was different. while the shop was not busy, a lady in my group was spoken to in a way that we felt was dismissive and unwelcoming. it left us with the impression that we had interrupted whatever was going on at the time. as someone who enjoys supporting local businesses, that was disappointing to experience. I don't normally write reviews like this because I understand that everyone can have a bad day. however, I felt it was important to share my experience in hopes that it helps improve future customer interactions. Please don't let my experience discourage you from visiting. we have had many great visits here in the past, which is why this experience stood out. I also hope to see the lady who is normally here when we visit, as she has always been friendly, welcoming, and provided excellent customer service. We will absolutely visit again in the future, and I hope this was simply an isolated experience. If the owner or management would like to discuss what happened, please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to share more details privately. THANK YOU

The staff was unexpectedly rude and unwelcoming from the moment I arrived. As someone dining alone, I felt dismissed rather than valued as a customer. The atmosphere may be beautiful, but good service matters just as much, and sadly this visit left me feeling uncomfortable instead of enjoying my time there. I hope management takes customer service more seriously in the future because no one should feel unwelcome for simply coming in alone to enjoy a meal or coffee.

We were guests in what our hosts described as "their favorite restaurant" and Yelp awards a 4-stars review...my conclusion was: either the restaurant was having a really bad night or reviewers have lost their understanding of what a 4-stars restaurant should be like. Our hosts ordered a bottle of white Bordeaux which the owner poured in our glasses as if she was pouring the lowly Sarasota water, filled our glasses almost to the top practically emptying the bottle. Then it was time to order, the lady host asked for the foie gras appetizer which she had absolutely recommended...Sorry, we are out! Appetizers: we ordered 2 Escargots, and the Homemade Country Pâté. The Escargots in herb butter were tasteless (I had to add some salt) and one of the snails was full of stones and grit. Main course: I asked for the Homemade Country Pâté which was portioned significantly less than what our host had gotten...was it to punish me for ordering 2 appetizers? My husband ordered the lamb chops...4 chops cooked to the point where they were tough, and a potato gratin reminiscent of a brick. Our hosts ordered the Pork Marco Polo and the Smoked Salmon Salad. I cannot comment on their entrees even though a comment was made that the pork was overcooked. The Salmon Salad did not look appetizing. But, the 'pièce de resistance' was when our host ordered Crêpe Suzette and was told that 'we are out of orange jam'...whaaat? You can find orange jam in any grocery store, you should never run out of orange jam. We have dined in many restaurant that we felt were subpar, this one won first price. Needless to say, will never go back.
