After bouncing around between a couple of places at the start of my Houston journey, it was recommended to me by multiple people to see Danny at Star Hair Salon. It's been close to a year and I haven't looked back since. When I first came to Star, the price was $6 across all stylists, while Danny charged a flat $7. There are people that come in and out of this place, but the majority of them are here for Danny. I've seen him cut a whole plethora of folks, but the reason I appreciate him is because he knows how to handle Asian hair (#1). It's not uncommon for him to have a wait of 3-8 people at any given time. Fast forward to current times, Danny now charges $10 flat. All other stylists are at $9 (#2) and it's cash only. Danny is also the only hair stylist I've ever seen that has "911" as option on his menu, which is a $40 emergency for anyone who needs to skip the line for whatever reason. Other feeds include $30 for coloring, $3 for beard trimming, and $3 for shampoo. Also, do not use the restroom. Hold it and go to the restaurant next door. Just trust me. Ultimately, Danny has been good about giving me a proper fade with crisp lines and helping me manage my cowlicks. He's always been incredibly friendly and funny and is well connected in the community. And liking the cut of his jib I decided to come here since I was in town on a Sunday and sadly Mike's ain't open on Sundays. First off - inflation is a b*tch. And it would seem in the last 10 months since his review the price of even the non-Danny tier 2 cutters is now $11.99. That's a 33% increase. But I'm glad they actually changed the sign to notify folks in advance. I was there. In the moment. So I went for it. Not crowded at 9:30 am on Sunday. Glad they were actually opened because, despite the sign saying 9 am open time, I did have my doubts this being a Sunday morning. The woman in the far right hand corner upon entering beckoned me to come to her chair. Like a siren beckoning a sailor to their demise. I was hesitant at first. But I like older folks more than the younger ones, and she was definitely grandma age, so I gladly walked over. Took a seat and 5 minutes later I was out of there. The front desk employee is always quick to greet me. The salon is very chic and well lit. The smocks are always clean. Everyone is doing their own thing but the occasional interactions with other stylists have always been very pleasant! Bianca is so talented and super sweet & funny. I have a philosophy with salons, usually I end up much more satisfied when i give my stylist ground rules, "want it to look full bodied, and not too trendy" but generally leave it open to them with what to do. In the past this has been very successful, especially with straight men. Not so much here. In fact I feel despite the claims Phillip makes to listen, consider face shape and combination of experience, he failed miserably. I feel my problem would have been a common one, all i wanted to know is if i did what ever he wanted to do to "fix" my color, would i have to do it again in 6 weeks or would it blend with my natural color as I let my hair grow out. I got a lecture instead of an answer about how hair grows etc.. i don't know if he thought I was really that big of an idiot or if he just isn't a communicator, but he was not able to explain clearly enough to me how he wanted to fix a color problem, which is supposed to be his specialty, he said something about why did i come there if I was afraid of color....i don't know but i thought that was why i WAS there, but he should be able to explain to me what he wants to do before he does it. I didn't get the worst cut ever, but i think i did get the worst one for my face shape. The way my overly honest mother put it, he managed to accentuate all your flaws. gee thanks.

Maher is extremely personable. He remembers your name, makes conversation, and asks you if you'd like a drink. If you ask for his advice, he will give you his expert opinion!! This is the first time I've gone to a hairdresser that actually looks at what is the best for your face shape, skin color... everything. He will tell you what he thinks will suit you. I wanted to chop all my hair off and I've never done that before, so I researched extensively on an experienced hair dresser that would be able to work with my idea. Studio La V seemed to have great reviews. I didn't want to replicate any picture exactly, but rather I wanted to takes bits and pieces of certain hairstyles and combine them. Maher did an excellent job of listening to me, while also repeated back exactly what I wished for. Maher let me take home my thick ponytail that he chopped off! He washed & conditioned my hair. I checked in on Yelp for my free collagen treatment, which nourishes your hair. Then he cut! He was very meticulous but quick. He ensured that the end result was exactly what you'd hoped for. I'm planning on returning again for highlights/balayage soon!! Maher is amazing, he seems to be an expert in everything that had to do with hair, and he offered some great advice on hair care, good highlight colors, styling, etc. This experience was fun, too! Maher creates a comfortable space in the studio.
