I've been going to Bianca for years and enjoyed getting my hair freshened up at Craft. The parking lot is small and usually full but I can find nearby street parking. The front desk employee is always quick to greet me. The salon is very chic and well lit. The smocks are always clean. Everyone is doing their own thing but the occasional interactions with other stylists have always been very pleasant! Bianca is so talented and super sweet & funny. CRAFT SALON is my "go to" when I want a great haircut and incredible color. Cabe is my stylist, and he gives amazing haircuts. But he is also the best hair colorist in Houston, hands down. He is an amazing unicorn who understands clients and hues, and can match both with amazing accuracy. I trust no one else with my dying needs. The salon recently had an interior refresh, and it is elegant and homey all at once. Pricing is on par with comparable salons, and customer service is always great! I have never had a bad experience here. Once my appointment wasn't in the system because of a glitch. They cut my hair anyway... squeezed me in and skipped lunch! Oh craft salon. You certainly have some crafty people there!! Found this place a little over a year ago on Groupon. I so needed a new stylist and thought this would be a good 'cheap' way to explore that option. I read some good reviews, so called and booked an appointment with Lola. The place was clean and inviting. Loved the feel of the place: open and spacious. Lola sat me down and offered me some wine or tea (I went with the wine of course - it was a first cut with a new stylist). We discussed my hair, lifestyle (I'm not going to 'fix' it every day), and made a plan. She worked some serious MAGIC! I loved my cut, color, and style when I left! Well here's the thing about Lola. You sometimes when you 'get lucky' and have a good style and the stylist can't repeat it ... not Lola. She is consistently good. Enough so that now I just let her do what she wants, cause even if it's different from what I may have thought I'd want - her ideas are way better - it always looks awesome. Shreeda did a fantastic job on my hair! I showed her a picture, and she brought it to life! I was actually running about ten minutes behind so I called and let the receptionist know. Parking was easy (which was a good surprise because I was worried about that). I was seen immediately and she did my highlights and my cut. It took about 4 hours but I asked for a lot (lol). It is definitely a little pricey but you get what you pay for! You always hear those horror stories when people pay practically nothing for highlights and then they spend a fortune trying to get it fixed. Do Bar is now Craft Salon $30-35 for a blow out. They use Oribe and / or BB products. I've had two blow outs here and really loved the quality. I say big, they give me big. They use this hairspray that smells like candy. It smells sooooooo good. I had them do a little braid once and it was $5 extra, but looks awesome. I come home and do a little shake like a hair model. I discovered there is a legit parking lot that's on the corner off of Fairview. It's not marked, of course, but I was promised I would not get towed. Everyone is really nice. No one is mean to you. No one tries selling you stuff. They get you in and out in a judgement free zone. Love it. I wish they were open a tad later. Wow, a 1-star review. It takes a lot to get me that upset. But that's how I was after I finished my appointment a few weeks ago at Craft. For those who want a quick answer: Terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE customer service coupled with mediocre salon services = I'm never going back. Now, I waited to write this review so I could see if I found anything glaringly wrong with my hair. I didn't. But the cut itself is pretty darn bland. And the color is exactly what I said I DIDN'T want. Anywho, on with the details... I bought the Groupon for Craft Salon because it seemed like a good deal: haircut, toner, kerastase treatment, style, and choice of coloring or highlights. When I called to make my appointment, I was told it would take AT LEAST 2.5 hours to properly do all these services. Ok great. I made my appointment with Natalie (who came highly recommended in reviews 'round here) and thought I was good to go. When I showed up, first of all, Natalie had another customer who she was doing services for while doing my own. Now, I've only gotten highlights but 1 or 2 times total in my life, so when she put on the stuff and then walked off to keep cutting the other girl's hair, I had no idea what a "good time" was for her to leave the dye on. So I sat. And sat. And sat. And started to worry. And questioned myself. And sat some more. By the time she came back and washed out my hair, I went from honey blonde to platinum/bleach blonde (it was enough of a change that people at work had trouble recognizing me); considering how I had SPECIFICALLY mentioned I did not want to go very light, it was clear she had gotten distracted and left the dye in too long. The conditioning treatment and toner took all of about 2 minutes. I've never had it done before but 2 seconds of internet research indicates it should last considerably longer. For the cut, she barely touched up my layers before asking, "How is that, is that good enough?" No it wasn't, it didn't look good, and when I asked her to do a few more things, she took about 30 seconds, then said, "All right, great, you're done!' My appointment had lasted 1.5 hours, 1 hour less than the absolute-minimum time I was originally quoted. It turned out she had yet another appointment booked for immediately after the other girl, and was trying to get me out the door. Basically, they had booked two back-to-back appointments over my appointment slot. So, Craft, you gave me $200 of services for $100. Great deal, except I got less than $100 worth of service. And although you lost half your money on that deal, there's no way you're making it back with me, because I'll be damned if I ever go back and I sure won't be recommending you to anyone but my most hated enemies. read more

Okay, so I haven't actually had to *pay* for a visit to Craft Salon yet, but I know I'll definitely be visiting them for my next hair appointment. I was helping out Ms. Teresa O (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hello-lucky-houston) for an event and I got to get my hair and make up done by Craft. The entire salon was full of incredibly helpful staff members that worked quickly and efficiently. They did the hair for all the models for the MAWF event in December and I was extremely impressed with their ability to jump between the different styles. The MAWF was a fundraiser/fashion show/art exhibit/music event that showcased three different designers in a runway event (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=185209027949). The three artists were completely different from each other in style and look for the models. You had one group of girls who did the awesome, crazy birdsnest look (very Project Runway). Then there was a group that did the sleep, sophisticated looks. I was in the last group. Since my hair was so short, we did like a faux mohawk thing that somehow I could never replicate back at home. Sigh. Craft also did the makeup for some of the models. For our group, we did crazy, crazy smokey eyes. I've never seen so much black eye makeup on one human being. It was really dramatic and very sexy. (Course, the boys got the guy-liner which was pretty hot itself!) I know that they're in a new building for the moment while they do construction on the street where they're normally located, but I'd follow Craft wherever they go. And that's saying a lot since I'm generally a SuperCuts kinda gal! read more

So I came here on a Groupon. I've heard about them from a friend before for an event they had with Craft, but I am not keen on driving out of my neighborhood unless I really need to, but hey, I had a Groupon already, so I said what the heck. First off, it's ok to park on the street on either side (Dunlavy) as long as it's before Fairview, I was told. (I was just worried from a towing incident I had before where my husband didn't see the no-parking sign...aah) I also realized too late that they have a parking lot at the back, but you have to turn on Fairview to see it, FYI. I also like that since they're on Dunlavy not far from the cafe Brasil and Domy Books, so if my husband is having a cut done, I can just pop by there and wait. There's also a fixed gear bike shop next door, so that's another thing to look at. Based on Yelp reviews, I went with the stylist Austin. There are good reviews for Cara (of course!), Lola and Dakota too, but I'm not sure Dakota works here anymore. I will say right now that Austin works well, is charming and is speedy, which is an awesome combo! Plus when he was done working on me, I felt like a bombshell with my sexy hair and strutted to my car accordingly: that's a priceless feeling I'll pay for! Their service right from the get-go was great, very welcoming and I was immediately put at ease: I didn't feel judged at all. The layout is a flat expanse of concrete, with a sofa area in the middle. Since I was rushing, I went straight ahead to my appointment, but I will keep this is mind for next time. The magazines are also located in this area, but their magazines are a bit more...esoteric...than the usual People magazine. So you'll have the New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Glamour, some hair style magazines...I do like reading trashy magazines at the salon, though! Oh well. They offer beverages, too, so maybe next time. The color and cut themselves were done very well, and it was fun talking to Austin, which is a welcome contrast to my stylist from the other salon who though efficient is quite cold! He recommended a few products after from Kevin Murphy, and ok they were a bit pricy ($25 for shampoo!), but hey, if it works... The only thing I didn't really like was the bathroom. It's pretty clean and very neat, though there was water on the floor by the toilet and the air smelled chemical-y. At least it wasn't worse than that, but still. I like another salon besides this one, but this is definitely another option to consider and most possibly come back to. Also, Groupon users, please remember the policy of tipping for the regular price, not Groupon price! Sure we paid $99, but the real value was for about $200, so tip accordingly, and make good relationships with your stylist who just spent 2 hours making you look good! I think that's just fair :) read more

Everyone I've ever come into contact with at Craft is always so nice. I'm so happy every time I leave there. They did raise their prices last November, but that won't prevent me from still going. I found Craft through a special offered on bloomspot. I am glad I did. I ended up cheating on my hairstylist. Oh well, it was bound to happen. He was getting too expensive and we are on the verge of a fiscal cliff! And so Craft salon is a better fit for me. My stylist Cabe helped me with the color and cut. He did a fabulous job and he suggested things to do, instead of pushing them on me. The salon itself looks like an old building converted with some modern furniture. The first stylist chair I sat in was a bit shaky but the other one later was fine. They offer many selection of products varying lines from BB , to GK and some I haven't heard of yet. At check out I didn't feel like I was robbed, but felt good about paying for the services. I will be back! I've been looking for a new stylist for a very long time now, and I've found her! I have very-boring, straight hair and I have been trying to find someone who would cut it in such a way that would give it volume and layers without making it look choppy and I was also interested in getting an ombre but kind of on the fence about it. EJ has won my heart! Cut: I explained to EJ that I was looking for a cut that would accommodate a "wake up and run" lifestyle and required little effort (because I'm not very good at being a girl), while leaving length. She provided me with exactly what I had imagined in a cut (without showing her a single picture) and did not cut a bunch of my hair off. I have NEVER gone ANYWHERE and said "leave the length" without them chopping off a bunch. I couldn't believe when she showed me the back that the length was still there and without split ends! My hair looked so healthy! She also turned me onto this Kevin Murphy volumising mousse (which is saying a lot because I really don't bother with hair products.) I'm usually really skeptical about buying products from stylists because I think it's an extra sell, but after a week, I am hooked. The stuff is amazing! Color: I valued the time EJ took to really explain to me the process and the potential results of my hair. I showed her some pictures and she was able to tell me things like: "this is too light for your hair" and "this is a realistic outcome" without being a snobby stylist. It was so pleasant to have a stylist really communicate with me about the options for what I could do with my hair. EJ ended up making me feel really confident about the decision and I decided that I wanted to give the ombre a go. And I am so glad I did! I love it and constantly get compliments! Overall, it was such a great experience. EJ is so friendly (I almost forgot that we're not actually friends, haha) and you can tell she's really passionate about her work! I came to Craft Salon with high expectations. And they were met. I recieved a HORRIBLE hair cut at Visible Changes in January and cried for a week. Then I saw a Groupon for Craft Salon for a haircut, toner, conditioner, full color or partial highlight all for $99! I immediately looked up reviews for this salon and who to go to. So this past Saturday I went to Lola. She talked to me and understood EXACTLY what I was looking for. She was SO nice and sweet! She took her time! Which I love because I know she is not rushing and being precise! I got full highlights which I paid $40 more for. The review that has one star from 6/28/2011.....is NOTHING that I experienced! For yelp: For the last three years, I have not allowed anyone to cut or color my hair but Amber at Craft. Hands down, she is the best stylist I've had and trust me, I've gone through quite a few. Amber was the first stylist who listened to me. She actually asks questions and does a consultation. She found out what I wanted and then actually did it. Her precision in cuts and hair color is uncanny and I am always beyond pleased with the final outcome. I love that I learn something new each time I sit in her chair, whether that be about products, styling techniques or cut/color suggestions. For me as someone not so well-versed in hair care, this is huge! I went from being strictly a straightened hair kinda girl to teasing, curling and styling to recreate looks at home. I am from Boston and was down in Houston for a clinical affiliation all summer. Needless to say I was desperate for a cut and some highlights. I bought a great deal on Bloomspot for $99. I was nervous to get highlights by a new stylist. I have been getting highlights for 15 years and the few times i have switched I always hold my breath until the foils come out. I was MORE than impressed! Cookie was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Not only did she ooze cool without trying, she is one kick ass stylist. My hair has NEVER looked so good. I had my hair done in June and I still haven't had to touch it. It was so natural looking! I normally have to go every 8 weeks and I am going on 16 weeks and I still LOVE it. Worst salon. I went to have my hair highlighted a while back and my head was turned completely blonde. I had light brown hair and wanted a few golden highlights, but instead was left with a bleached head. I came back a couple of weeks later to have it turned back to my original color, but was left with RED BROWN HAIR. I was so dissatisfied I left without paying. I have become quite loyal to "Lola" at Craft Salon. She has cut my hair 5-6 times and also given me highlights. She really listens before she goes to work and the results are lovely. I have thick, wavy hair and if it's not cut correctly it just hangs there, heavy and clumpy. Lola cuts it carefully, first wet, then dry, and she knows how to skillfully bring out the natural wave and get rid of the weight. I began to trust her so much that I decided to try some blonde highlights with her, the first time in 20 years. They turned out great -- subtle enough that they still looked natural, but they also brightened my look. I love it. So, whether you want a cut, or color, or both, I really recommend Lola. Austin at Craft Salon is a miracle worker. After leaving another stylist's chair with what can only be characterized as an ombre disaster, I was desperate to find someone who could transform my orange and maroon striped hair into something passable or mildly professional. I was referred to Austin, and, boy, am I grateful. I left Austin's chair with a cut, style, and color that far exceeded my expectations. The orange and maroon stripes were replaced with a wonderful, subtle ombre of chocolate brown and caramel. Austin also took steps to improve the health of my hair with a deep conditioning treatment. Better yet, Austin worked efficiently to give me the hair I hoped for in far less time than it'd taken to get the hair I didn't want. Aside from being technically skilled, Austin also has a great "chair-side" manner. He is fun and engaging. The same can be said of the entire Craft Salon experience.
