After reading mixed reviews on Yelp I was a bit leery of trying Michael Nails & Spa. However, I have a close friend who is in the beauty industry and who is very particular about quality of work who was very happy and recommended I see Tao for my dip nails. I made an appointment with Tao for dip nails and a pedicure, I did have to wait about 10-15 minutes for her to wrap up with her prior appointment, but she was very apologetic and super attentive once sitting down with me. She did an AMAZING job! Her attention to detail was phenomenal...the pedicure was also one of the best I've had. Tao is out on maternity leave and while it was recommended I see Heidi while she is out I've yet to do so. Perhaps I will post another review after I do! I went with my sister we got a manicure and a pedicure, both with gel polish, It was only a week for my sister and 2 weeks for me and they all peeled off. The lady doing mine stopped and cut a man (with no appointment) toe nails. There were others who came in with an appointment and they blew them off, had them sit until the water was cold and not once did they even acknowledge them. One lady left and I didn't blame her at all. I really felt bad for them. Not to mention we paid extra for gel that didn't even work, we have gone several times, but never again. read more

Michaels used to be great not sure what happened. The owner was outside smoking the whole time. We went in at 6:30 am hour before they closed (I called first). Me and my friend got gel manicures. A girl walked in with us asking if they had time for a brow wax. They told her yes and to have a seat. Cut back to me and my friend . They were in such a hurry to get out that they did a horrible job. My friends nails were not even painted all the way. Her gels only went 3/4 up her thumb nails. The lady filed her nail so rough she has a raw spot now. My nails are better , but not completely filled in. The lady who did my nails cut my finger with the clippers and now I'm pretty sure I have an infection starting. We get up to pay and everyone is leaving and that girl I mentioned before was still sitting there. During that hour not one person helped her....never going back :( it's sad it used to be so good. read more

I've gotten my nails done here twice. The first time was great but my last experience here was disappointing. The nail tech, a younger man, rushed through doing my nails. I got an acrylic set with gel. The nails were thick, uneven, and honestly looked like someone didn't take their time. He wouldn't even let me keep my hands under the light long enough for the gel to set in. I went back the next day to get them redone because I really did not like them. He seemed offended but still did it. I had to ask him to shorten the nails multiple times because he didnt notice how uneven in length they were. When i got home i had to take my own nail file to the because the nails were slanted and my thumb nail was rounded when all the others werent. I've only had this set for a week and already 3 nails have broken off completely. I spent $80 total just to have to get them done for a third time. Not worth it. read more

Terrible Terrible Terrible! I have used their services many times, and many times left unsatisfied or unhappy with their blatant rudeness but, for a variety of reasons, I always seem to convince myself to give them another try. Never again! Today I had a 4:45 apt. First I waited in the waiting area for 20 minutes as 2 walk-ins were seated ahead of me. Finally I was seated in a spa chair, to then wait 25 additional minutes... at that point, and after 45 minutes of NOTHING, I just stood up, shook the water off my feet, and walked out the door. The culmination of poor service, substandard execution and absolute rudeness was finally ENOUGH to push the most loyal patron over the edge. read more

I have been going to Michael's now off and on for ten years. Their service is hit or miss. I want to say this up front, people. They don't talk much because most of them do not understand our language. They know money. That's what they know. I have had the pedicurists argue with me (what business allows their employees to argue with the customers?) over services that have been missed because they are chatting with other employees. I have had hot towels that are WAY too hot to put on my feet, so much so that I felt like my feet were burning and had to kick the towel off. Their pedicurists believe that their pounding the back of the calf is a massage. Michael, this is not a massage! I have even been asked on a manicure whether I wanted square or round tips, and when I said round, I ended up walking out with rounded square - this happened two weeks ago. You might be thinking, well, why didn't you say something, but when your nails are being worked on, you really don't see it until the end, and by then, it's too late. They just don't understand. However, yesterday was the last time I will go there. I went in for a manicure and a wax. My manicure was great except that the guy who did my nails seemed to be in a hurry and didn't require me to have my nails under the "lamp" for as long as all the other times. Of course, I'm not sure whether that makes a difference, but after he was done with my nails, he only put a little lotion on his hands to do the hand massage. I have to say that I get more out of putting lotion on my hands/arms than he did. Once I went back to get my wax done, I asked the young woman if the guy was new. After repeating myself about five times, I gave up. Not only could I not understand her, she was completely oblivious to what I was saying. The wax I went in for was a facial wax so from below the eyes to just under the chin and jawline. If you have never had one, make sure you go to a reputable salon, but they are great. They prep your skin with a cotton ball and a solution. In the past, it's been a very pleasant smelling liquid on the cotton ball, but yesterday I think it was just water. Then they put baby powder all over your face. I guess this is to see where the hair is, but they apply this right up under your nose so you are inhaling this, which is VERY BAD! If they are using Johnson & Johnson, they have a baby powder problem! More than 1,000 women are suing the company for covering up a cancer risk (From Bloomberg 3/31/2016). Every time this woman would put the powder up under my nose, I would fan the air in front of my face to keep from inhaling this, but she continued to put the powder under my nose. She then waxed my face. Once she was done with that, instead of applying a lotion to sooth the skin, like I have experienced in the past, she took a cotton ball and rubbed it over my face. I thought there had to be some solution on it so I didn't say anything. I practically shot up off of the table when she was rubbing it over my cheekbones. The pain was very intense, but she continued this on both sides. When I yelled out of pain she finally stopped. I couldn't tell if there was any damage since my face had just been waxed, and everything was red. It was only when I got home and my face was still in pain did I see the irritation on my face. I don't know what sort of training Michael has for his employees or if it's more of a "Throw them in the lake to see if they can swim" sort of training, but these people need to be trained, and although there is a language barrier, they need to be able to communicate regarding their services. One last item to note. I have been getting my nails done there for a long time. When I first started going, I asked how much a manicure cost for gels. They said $25. I really wasn't paying attention as I continued to go in since I would get a mani/pedi or I would take my kids in with me so I would be paying for several of us so I really didn't notice this. One day, though, I was just having my nails done, and they had to remove the polish. This is an additional $5 to have the polish removed. This little detail is at the bottom of their list of services, not at the top where the charges for nail services is listed. I wouldn't mind paying the additional $5 for the service if they just disclose it from the beginning. When you're new and looking at the charges for nails, you just look at the "nail menu" and that's it. Why go on reading if you're not getting additional services? THIS IS DECEPTIVE! I have also been scolded by a male employee for my nails being too short (sorry, but I can't type 100 WPM with one inch nails). The employees have laughed at my feet. I am hard on my feet since I am a hiker and backpacker so my toenails get beat up quite a bit, but to sit there and have my pedicurist nudge her co-worker and point at my feet and then laugh, well, that's just not good business. First let me say they did a great job in my nails. BUT the customer service here is lacking. The ladies where nice but the younger man was pretty rude. When I first got there I tried to make small talk and ask how long they had been open. His reply was "what do you want?" In shock I said...a pedicure. I recently went to have a pedicure at Michael's... The woman giving me the pedicure was lovely and did a great job, I don't know her name- she didn't have a name tag. When she was finishing up, Michael- the owner came up behind her while she was sitting on the stool and not 6 feet away from me, he began to rub and scratch his bare belly;lifting up his shirt to do so as he rubbed and scratched to expose his stomach right in front of me. It didn't appear to be sexual- just seemed he is WAY TOO comfortable and forgetting to be professional!! He was dressed in tattered jeans and had an overall unkept appearance; totally unbecoming of someone who is suppose to be putting customers, cleanliness and sanitation first!. The woman doing my pedicure was called away to do something else so Michael took over to paint my toenails. I didn't see him wash or sanitize his hands and when it was time to pay he seemed annoyed that I didn't have cash! He then ran my card and returned it without a word and walked away.... VERY RUDE! While sitting in the chair I noticed a large woman come in. It was hot out so maybe that's why her hair looked a mess. Got mad and left!on my first visit they told me to pick a color bad it would be ten minutes. They kept me waiting for 45 minutes or so, while they chatted about, then put me in a pedicure chair to soak. Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt I waited 10 more minutes before I dried my own feet, found someone to tell them I was done and left. This was my second time here. Both experiences were great. My regular place was not available, so I tried them. This will now be my regular place. The first time Andrea was with me for hours of treatments. I got a pedicure, manicure, bikini wax, half leg wax, under arm wax, and eyebrow wax. This was my first bikini wax and Andrea was very professional. I didn't realize that they only took cash, and their ATM machine was down. They allowed me to run to the bank without making me feel guilty. My second experience was with Leelee. I got a pedicure and she did a great job. She really took her time with my toe nails. She even had an extra light. I'll be going back today to get an eyebrow wax. They ask you to wash your hands as soon as you walk in and then pick a color. Their chairs are great and they have separated each station to keep it safe. They keep their doors open the whole time and every thing that they use is sanitized or only used once. read more

They charge more than most other places, the old lady was rude and left my nails crooked. If I could leave a negative star rating I would give it -5 I made an appointment and then was told that she did not have time to fill my nails and I had to pick a new color. She left sharp edges even after I told her at the beginning I need them rounded and when I reminded her during the process that some where sharp she scolded me as to how she doe them differently than others and will do it right at the end. I got a gift certificate to this place and I am glad I did, or I probably would never have known the place was here. The place is very roomy and bright windows that cover over half the building and soft yellow walls. Its airy and bright and relaxing. They were really busy so I didn't get helped right away, but I was seated at a station to wait my turn. I asked for acrylics and a older guy (I think his name was Michael), sort of looked like I was making a mistake. I have this one nail that is crooked and when I get acrylics, its always messed up looking and weird, and he suggested a regular mani/polish using a gel color! This was a lot cheaper than acrylics were, so he wasn't trying to just make more money for the salon. He was willing to do the fake nails, but I listened to his suggestion and went with the gel color. He was right and my nails look great! If the polish holds out long enough, I'll go back and get a darker color. I picked a lighter color just in case it chips at work. I am pretty rough on my hands, so if this holds out, I'll be going at least 1 a month! Helpful tip, if you want to tip for service, they have a sign that says you can't do it on a credit card and to use cash. I'll remember that for next time, since I had a gift certificate this time. I had an acrylic fill about a week ago and yesterday I went to the Dr for a swollen finger. The Dr said I probably got the infection at the salon where I got my nails done. I'm on antibiotics now to get rid of the infection. Hopefully I won't lose my nail. I will not be going back for a fill ever again. read more

This was the worst experience ever. Phovk Kim and I forgot her last name but the old one with crazy eyebrows hassrassed me and needs to retire. She tore up my nails rushed and her hands were shaky like she had cerebral palsy. Also she grabbed my hands and yelled at me for no reason. Prices were great. I paid 15 for my manicure and 25 for my sister's gel manicure. They're lasting great. The color selection was average, with a lot of duplicates not only in similar colors but exact same colors. Their selection of brands was diverse. The salon is clean and simple, the music they played was really relaxing. The tools that they used were wrapped and clean. That all being said, this place was packed-- it's a great place but with 11 people working and over 11 people getting manicures or pedicures the customer service was less than stellar. Unfortunately, this is only because they are so popular right now that it's hard to say how exactly they could remedy this situation. My sister and I had an older gentleman take off our old nail polish (as a note, he used the same cotton pad for both of us. I don't particularly care because I'd do that if I were at home, but it makes me wonder if there are other less than sanitary things that they are doing-- despite having completely clean and wrapped tools at the beginning of the session). Then a woman did my sister's manicure, while I waited for well over ten minutes for someone to start mine. Had this been a nicer more upscale salon where they offer you coffee, I probably wouldn't have cared. However, the windows looks out at Burger King; it's not like I could enjoy the view. Finally someone started my manicure. The woman was great and very thorough with my nails. I don't have the healthiest nails; they peel and my cuticles are always terrible. The hand message was quick and less than relaxing-- probably because there were other people waiting and they wanted to get to the next person. Half way through my second coat the lady passed me on to someone else and they finished my manicure for me. When my nails were done she went off to work on someone else-- I actually had to get her attention so I could pay. Don't get me wrong, I'd go back just not on Saturday morning and most likely with an appointment. I'm used to paying 30+ dollars for a manicure and I guess part of that is the superior customer service I've received elsewhere. read more

I would not recommend this place at all after my experience. I came in for a pedicure with my friend. Jennifer was the gal that had me sit in the chair. She asked me which pedicure I want. Since my friend is doing the deluxe $35 pedicure, i told her yes I want that too. Then she said "deluxe extra gel", i thought she meant deluxe comes included with gel nail polish. oh boy, was I in for a surprise. When it's time to pay, another lady told me it's $52! I was shocked and literally quiet for a minute - as I thought it will only cost me $35. It turned out that it's $35, with $17 for $5 take off my existing gel because I didn't have it done at this place before and $12 for gel. Jennifer was yelling from a distance with the price and it looked like she was about to attack me if I don't pay $52. Also this gal Jennifer should have told me the prices all up front. shady business. and she was being noisy and chimed in the talk between me & my friend during the pedicure. Another fabulous pedicure! I've been getting pedicures since the 90's and in over 20 years they have the best pedicure I've ever had. Every time. I also had the mousy amazing eyebrow EVER! They don't slapsome hot wax on your forehead then a cloth and rip it off, it actually took 20 minutes and they measured my forehead drew lines did it in small pieces then came back and carefully tweezed! Went to get a full set and they were really fast, which I thought was cool until I got home and saw that they had left out large parts of gel on the sides of a few nails. you could see my real nail , it was pretty bad! Went to get a fill two weeks later, and Michael did my nails. The worst fill I have ever gotten. The original set was cracking/discoloring on the bottom and he didn't even take that part out before putting new gel over. you can see the older part under the new gel. Previous salons have used scissors and other devices to remove the ugly part of the nail before refilling. Also when I arrived, he asked me to come back in an hour. I came back in an hour and still had to wait like 20 minutes before anyone helped me. Previous visit I received a pedicure....which chipped the very next day (this hardly ever happens!) I got a full set and a pedicure. The pedicure was nice except the lady who was doing it kept wiping off her scraper tool on my foot even though my feet were right next to a towel. When I looked at my toe nails when I had gotten home I also noticed that she didnt paint my full toe nails only enough to make it look decent. It seems like there wasnt any effort put into it. I had a picture of the design I wanted for my finger nails and pretty much did their own design and chose a completely different glitter than I had asked for. I seriously love this place. First off, I love how I'm greeted immediately and my presence is acknowledge straight away. I always look for friendliness, cleanliness, and professionalism. Now. I do have to admit I do have my favorites. I adore Kelly. She is definitely an attention to detail kind of girl. I always get gel nails, along with a pedi (when I'm feeling fancy), and it's truly amazing every time. She focuses on me and ensures that I happy with the work being done. The pedicures are out of this world and when she pulled out the hit stones I almost passed out. It was a little escape straight to heaven. If you're looking for a semi relaxing environment where you can check out from life for a bit, then I highly recommend this place. It's somewhere local to go and get your nails and toes. Has a great reputation and wonderful people that work there , that get the job done. If you're looking to get your local gossip on and enjoy talking people's ear. May not be the place. My wife was a seasonal regular at this salon....no more. She scheduled an appointment there a week prior. She showed up 5 minutes early and was told to sit down and wait...no problem. 15 minutes later they started soaking her feet in hot water. OK, still not too bad....right. After an additional 20 minutes still soaking and watching other people walk in way after she did and being seated at a nail station to begin work she got up and left. She also watched other people walk in just before she did and get seated right away. The week prior when she walked in to schedule the appointment the person acknowledged her and said OK but never made any attempt to write down the time and day. That should have been a bad sign. There is at least 5 other nail salons within a mile of this location. You would think with that much competition you might get better customer service.....obviously not!! Visiting from out of town - needing a pedicure and a acrylic fill and gel polish, I went to Micheal's. 3 days later the polish and acrylic is coming off 2 of my fingers. I went in requesting they repair their work. They took me right in. But --- she proceeded to remove all the polish/sand down acrylic - and do all my nails. I kept saying I only needed the 2 nails repaired since it was only 3 days. One did the prep and another did the color. I gave each of them $5 tip since they were generous enough to fix my nails. Then they proceeded to charge me $35. I was not a happy camper. In 3 days with fees and tips I spent $150 dollars on my hands and feet. Guess what? 1 day later the polish is coming off. I am NOT going back. I've been getting my nails done for years - and have never had this problem. I will NOT go back when I am visiting. read more

Every time I come here I am disappointed. I came to get a fill and my nails came out shaped different from each other. In addition they charged me $10 more than they advertised for a fill. These should be non-issues as I get my nails done in a square cut and had no extra design on the nails. Best pedicure experience in Grover Beach! Couldn't wait to write this review (I'm writing it from my comfy spa chair!) These girls really know how to pamper!! My daughter and I received the standard pedicure but could not believe what we got!! Sea salt scrub, massage, hot stone treatment and hot towels and refreshments....all this included for only 26.00. Very professional, super clean atmosphere ( tastefully decorated, open and airy) and huge selection of nail polish. Extremely friendly staff. I will definitely be a return customer. read more

Michael has done my acrylics and pedicures for years, and I won't go to anyone else. I LOVE that the place is clean and they sterilize their instruments, and I am always treated with a smile and made comfortable. Their prices are the best in town and they occasionally have deals on their FB page or in the store, but you have to ask. They have only been open for a year, so I think they are still trying to figure out their staffing, but if you make an appointment, they will get you right in! read more

Personally I love Michael and his crew , some women are friendlier and more talkative then others but clearly the staff is made up of well trained nail technicians. They deal with a lot of frustrating women on the daily so honestly be patient, if you're not nice and don't have common courtesy then don't expect them to be nice back to you. Been getting my eyebrows done there for almost a year now and they do excellent! Fair prices , good service :) also some days are wayyyyy busier then others , so if you don't make yourself an appointment don't be surprised if you have to wait. I have been going to Michael Nails for five years. Michael and his staff are friendly and always accommodating. On a few occasions I've had to wait for no longer than 15 minutes but I always have a scheduled appointment so waiting is rare. I get the powder dip nails which last 3 to 4 weeks. The pedicures are clean and soothing. The tubs are sanitized using disposable liners and the nail utensils are packaged. I have never had any ingrown nails or other types of infections. My regular manicurist is Maggie and she does a thorough job. If you want to feel pampered give Michael Nails a try! read more
