A class act and INCREDIBLE COACH Michael and I got connected because I was getting ready to audition to be a magician member at the Magic Castle. To those who don't know, the audition process is designed to be rigorous to ensure that only those who are serious about the art and study of the craft matriculate into membership. And while I was those things when I reached out to Michael, performing casually for friends at gatherings, I had yet to put together anything like a formal 10-minute set. Before our first meeting, Michael gave me a little "homework": Write out a list of all the tricks I can perform without thinking, as well as a list of non-magic related talking points. At our first consultation, within fifteen minutes of me sharing these lists, he stopped me to say, "I have your set." He then proceeded to talk me through the sequence of tricks I would perform and elegantly wove a through-line consisting of the talking points I had shared with him mere moments before! The set he described had a satisfying arc, and even ended with a satisfying callback. It was sorcery. For those who might be curious...I passed the audition in my first attempt. The setting was a relaxed backyard party with around 50 people in their 20's-50's, and Michael was roaming around entertaining guests with a delightful show.
