I came here because I wanted something sweet and my trusty yelp app led me to this hidden store. I had never heard about this place until I came across a texas sized shaped cookie on instagram. So of course as any sane person would do, I made the trek so that I too could have an IG moment. I was not greeted nor acknowledged by the girl at the counter so I was just taking a look around the selections because at this point it was just awkward. The store is huge but they only had a small selection of cookies that seemed a bit too pricey for me. I settled on a iced sugar cookie and oatmeal for a whopping $4.56. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised about the iced sugar cookie. It was actually tasty and sort of photogenic. The oatmeal cookie was just ok for me. Overall, they had a small selection however I will assume if you order them ahead by the dozen to your specification, they might actually be better than just ok. I LOVE Black and White Cookies. The problem? Difficult to find in Houston. I posted a Facebook status about craving a black and white cookie early last week and a friend mentioned this Cookie place in west u. He had the opportunity to check it out before me, but I knew it would be incredible. Saturday morning, I walked into Michael's Cookie Jar for the first time, on a mission for half a dozen black and white cookies. These babies were a bit smaller than the typical New York City ones I'm used to, but they were much fluffier and the icing was smoother. I also tried a mocha moon. l.et me preface this by saying I'm not a huge fan of chocolate cake. The cookie was good, and interesting, to say the least. The coffee buttercream on top was delicious- this was my favorite part of the cookie. I'm looking forward to trying the pumpkin cookies Michael promised me via twitter. I haven't tried any other cookie and unless I hit them up fresh from the oven, I probably never will. Before lunch rolls around, I start searching Yelp for bakeries. Bakeries are awesome, because you get lots of sugar and you can make a meal out of several items (as you'll see later in this review). Furthermore, you can try a variety of items in one go for not very much money and write a review of the place. In fact, though I had tacos for lunch, I'm currently trying to battle the urge to run out to a bakery to get some cookies. I read about a study where kids who were best able to delay gratification--if they didn't eat a cookie that was in front of them, they'd get a reward at the end--did so by distracting themselves. Writing reviews is my attempt to distract myself, which, come to think of it, is remarkably stupid, because this is making me think about cookies. I had started to run out of places to try, but hmm, I'd never heard of Michael's Cookie Jar. I worked very briefly at a short-lived bakery in Houston called The Cookie Jar. On my first day, I had, at the very least, a cupcake, 15 chocolates, and two giant cookies (I think I spent three hours at the gym that day to try to make up for it...). It was a pretty great place, besides allowing me to stuff my face silly, because it had a bunch of tables to sit inside. I was surprised to see that the storefront for Michael's Cookie Jar was so tiny and looked so old school (this is a euphemism; another one would be, the opposite of shiny and new while not being cozy). All the cookies are displayed on one counter (or two, if you consider that it's broken up), with the ones which aren't packaged under a glass case. I had the walnut brownie, which I only managed one bite of, because it was so cakey. Plus, every available space of the top was covered in chopped walnuts, and, for me, walnuts are an accessory to the brownie. The cinnamon shortbread was okay--definitely not as buttery as a Walker's shortbread, and the cinnamon sugar tasted like funnel cake sugar. The much vaunted black and white cookie (vanilla and chocolate frosting on a cookie-shaped squished dome of a cake), which, are they really that rare in Houston? I've definitely had them in New York, but I feel as though I've come across them down here. The cake had hints of citrus (blech!), and the chocolate frosting was on the dark side. I've had better chocolate chunk cookies (and the chunks are very distinct chunks here), but the texture of the cookie is the sort I like--crisp on the edges, somewhat soft in the middle, with a uniform thickness that's somewhere between thin and thick. My favorite was the toffee pecan, which was large and thin. Seriously, how can you go wrong with slightly melted bits of toffee? (Dammit, I'm not going to run out for cookies!) Most cookies are around $0.90 to $1.50, and the 1.75" brownie was something like $2.25. Finding it is a pain in the pizolla. It's at the north end of the shopping center next to the post office, and tucked away so that it's almost on the strip mall that's on the street to the west of Weslayan. read more

Yummmmm. The snicker doodle had just the right amount of snicker to go with the doodle and the choc chunk was light and with good chocolate ratio. Still have peanut butter, lemon bar and a black/white to eat, but so far so delicious. read more

If you want great cookies this is the place to get them. My favorites are the M&M and the Black & White, but I'd say all of them are really good. Customer service is also excellent! Tip: they have a frequent buyer card - you get a free cookie on every 6th visit. read more

While the desserts look beautiful and delicious, the service in the bakery was down right offensive! I was there with a friend (who has never been) today asking about availability of specific cookies and they were so very put out with my inquires, that my friend suggested we leave and go to Paulie's for iced cookies and friendly service (right in front of them.) They never even looked up and let us walk right out the door. There are too many delicious and friendly places to have to deal with that for a $5.00 cookie! ***UPDATE*** The owner reached out right after I posted my review and was very interested in my experience and apologetic for the experience I had. Clearly, that was meaningful and I will certainly give this bakery another try the next time I need/want iced cookies. read more

Great cookies baked fresh every day. They always have cookies decorated for each season or holiday. Plenty of variety and you can walk in and out with a beautiful tray of cookies in just minutes. This is a visit a long time in the works...3 years later, here I'm am! I was pretty excited since I've had a taste of MCJ, since some of the cafes I frequent carry or used to carry MCJ's products. The shop is in the back behind the Joanne's on Weslayan, which you have to drive through to get to it. Oddly, on arriving it looks pretty empty. They really don't have as much as I thought. It's a really small shop, which is mostly the kitchen. I ordered 4 cookies, chocolate chip, toffee, sugar, snicker doodle, sand tart, and a ginger bread man. I thought they were all good but pretty average cookies, nothing really special. The cookies I have previously tried from cafes that carry or used to carry MCJ were better than what they offered at the store, I thought. The location was a bit hard to find. Other than that, the cookies were great! I ate one the next day and it was just as yummy. The cookies are a tad bit on the more pricier side. This place... Its taken over any self control I have. The cookies and treats are sooooooo yummy. Big, chewy, fresh cookies are just a weakness. We've been about a dozen times and not once been disappointed. Prices are pretty standard and the Staff is very friendly. It's hidden but don't let that deter you, it's worth the stop. read more

Thanks to my dear friend Roz Pactor I received an email notice that Michael had opened his retail store this past Monday. Since I work hundreds of hours a week, I decided to immediately run over to his store because I am hosting a party in July. Michael is fabulous and I do mean fabulous. He had icing all over his hands but stopped immediately to help me with this cookie cake (tower) order. I immediately wrecked my carb free diet by tasting one of his oh so delicious cookies. Not greasy and perfect flavor! The cookie tower is going to be perfect for this party and I cannot wait to see it. Michael's does unbelievable beautiful work. I needed crown shaped cookies for my daughter sorority party at the last minute. A neighbor told me about Michael and I called him late one evening. Michael was able to make the cookies exactly how they needed to look. And they tasted great. He even delivered them in time. The girls LOVED to cookies in looks and taste!
