I was at Michael's again tonight with a friend and must commend the poise and professionalism of their manager Alistar who was working on a register. The man in front of us told him he wanted to return a frame he bought and get another instead. Alistar verified what the man wanted to do, proceeded to do the return, and gave the man his receipt showing his refund. He then rang up the other frame and when the man was about to pay he asked why the frame was $30 when the one he returned was only, about, $13. Alistar explained the one he returned was part of a "Buy One, Get One at 50% Off" and their system gave the refund on the lesser of the two frames [I'm work in retail and that's how it works]. The man then raised his voice, demanded to know why he wasn't told that before he did the return, and began trying to get him to give him the new frame at the discounted price. Alistar remained calm and again explained how the system worked. He also told the man he'd work with him on giving him a discount, but the man kept demanding that he be given an 80% or 90% discount which, as was explained to him, wouldn't be possible, but that Alistar would try to work with him. The man then demanded to be given his original frame back. Alistar then asked "So, you want to buy this frame back...is that correct?" The man yelled it needed to be given to him since he already paid for it. Alistar tried to point out several times that the man had been refunded the money and couldn't just walk out with a frame that wasn't paid for. At this point the man demanded to know his name and asked to speak to the manager- Alistar gave his name and said he was the manager on duty. The man the yelled that when he returned the other frame he got with this one, the girl just gave him the frame without a problem and without charging him. Alistar said if he had gotten a free frame from a girl that she made a mistake and that he (Alistar) wasn't going to give him a free frame, but if he wanted to re-buy the one he just returned that wouldn't be a problem. The man began using profanity and after he made a threatening comment, he was asked to leave the store which, thankfully, he did. Alistar apologized to us and to others in line that we had to witness this mans behavior. I asked Alistar for his name so we could compliment him on his professionalism and remaining calm under the circumstances- he's a true professional who dealt with a very difficult customer in very professional way. read more

Just had to give a quick shout out to Oscar for his customer service. There were two examples of how it could be done.. one where this guy walked by us and we had to ask him if he had any blue pencils to draw with.. to which he said "uh no we don't". (As he was standing sideways like he was going to break or lunch or going off shift and we were the only ones between him and his beer or something) And then we had the example of great customer service from Oscar.. he came up to us and asked us if we were finding everything we needed.. to which we asked the same question (do you carry blue pencils of any kind?).. and he said empathetically "oh wow that's a tough one...well let me think..if we did it would be in the drawing art supplies area.." and he walked us over to it and looked for and found us the one blue pencil he had in stock... not exactly what we were looking for but we are buying it.. But the real lesson here is that even if it wasn't available or he was fairly sure they didn't even carry it.. he took the time to care, ask, and walk us to the area. That's customer service. And it costs the company nothing. Oscar's efforts this evening were worthy of me writing this review for Michaels. So often those things get unrecognized. I'm SO SAD the Michael's in Panorama City closed! It was the closest location to my house and had a GREAT yarn selection! If you are a knitter, DON'T shop here, they have NO selection of yarn! Sure, they have the basics, but if you're looking for anything other than basic yarns from Red Heart, Loops & Threads, or Lionbrand, go to Encino or Glendale. Although Michael's MAKES the Loops & Threads brand, they don't even carry more than basics of that one here, either! One of my Etsy items is made from L&T PomPom yarn, and they don't have it. Nevermind any other types of specialty yarns - stretchy yarns, sock yarns (aside from a piteous few), lace yarns, etc. My items are made-to-order, so if I have to order yarns online, it's that much longer my customers have to wait. When I asked the lady at the register why their yarn selection was so pitiful, she said, "Oh yeah, we're, like, a Michael's express, so our stock is a little less than the ones you're probably used to." "I'm so sad the one in Panorama City closed," I responded, "They had a great yarn stock." "Yeah, we replaced them." I started to express my frustration at the idea of a store with less inventory replacing a larger one, but she cut me off and rushed me out, saying "You're all set!" Like she didn't even want to hear it. THAT's customer service for ya! This location is close to my work, which is the only reason it's getting as much as 2 stars. I guess I can run in here when I'm in a pinch and in need of some basic yarn. BAD selection, BAD customer service - BAD CHOICE, Michael's! I found myself at a Michaels in West Covina one day because my stupid GPS on my phone took me there when I typed in Michaels. So from Hollywood, I drove 26 miles to the West Covina Michael's when I could've driven 4 miles to the Studio City Michaels. I'm an idiot. Though now, all you craft nerds can benefit from my review since now I can compare the two. The Studio City Michaels is better. The cashier was way nicer, gave me a 15% off coupon and an even exchange on an ink pad I bought at the other location that was dry as a bone. I should mention that the inkpad replacement I purchased for the second time was also a dried up useless piece of garbage. I'm not some weirdo sitting around knitting or crafting on a regular basis, but I am doing mainly my own DIY wedding, so I came here for some gift boxes and ribbons and assorted other wedding junk that nobody will probably notice, but it will make me feel better like I put in some sort of effort. They have everything I could imagine one would need to do any artistic project, knitting stuff, canvases, paint, brushes, party favors, and tons of stuff I have no idea what people use it for. I was a little annoyed because some of the canvases I saw on their website were not in stock at this store. But they were buy on get one and you can order online and have it shipped to the store for free pickup. Of course I'm too lazy to have to drive back here or mistakenly West Covina again, so I just bought it online and paid the $6.99 shipping rate. But it is a nice option. When you book a birthday party there get ready to WORK. They sell packages and say someone will help do the crafts, it actually means you will do everything and there will be a person there that will ask you how to do crafts. They didn't have scissors for all the kids, SCISSORS!!!!! We were in a store that sells it!! No glue for all the kids??? wtf. They asked if I wanted to add face painting, I said yes. They ended up having the same person who was suppose to help with crafts sit and paint faces. The kids Didn't have time to do all the crafts since they expected 6 year olds to trace something, cut it and decorate- 14 kids with 4 markers, 3 scissors and 2 glue sticks. It was a lot of work for us, we could have just bought the things cheaper and do it at home, there was no benefit in having it there. I don't recommend it at all, worst decision Ive ever made about a birthday place. read more

I've just called twice at this location - the first time an associate named Lexi answered and immediately put me on hold. I waited 5 minutes before I hung up and redialed. Lexi answered again and I was able to ask her if they sold embossing powder and she put me on hold to find out. Again, I was placed on hold for over 5 minutes without someone coming back to at least let me know they were still looking to find out. I don't intend on calling back or even step into this establishment where basic phone customer service is extremely lacking. I'd rather go to The Paper Source even though its a little more expensive. At least I know that I'll get excellent help and I won't be waiting forever for someone to answer a question that could be answered in 2 minutes. read more

I am new to Los Angeles and don't know the area well. I came to this Michaels today for some framing needs. The Michaels in Glendale was closer to my house, but the reviews made me nervous, because I needed someone to guide me a little (I'm a novice framer). Thank goodness I came here because I received the best customer service of any Michaels I've been to (probably of any store I've been to in a really long time). Alphonso helped me in the framing department. He showed me the different options I had to frame 5 pieces I had. I decided that the custom framing might be a little pricy for what I wanted, so he helped me pick out some pre-made frames. One of my pieces was an odd size, so he helped me pick out a larger frame and then made a nice mat for it. I spent a couple hundred bucks and over an hour in the store, but Alphonso really helped me every step of the way. He even showed me how to attach picture wire to them and let me do it myself in store, so if I had any questions I could ask him. Then he carried everything out to my car for me. It's people like Alphonso that are the reason I would go out of my way to go to a store further than other stores. Thank you so much for your help! Then to the rescue came the lovely Susana. She was helpful in finding me the perfect ribbon and created for me the most beautiful bow for my basket. I come here a lot because it's convenient, but the store is actually not that great. The selection is okay, it's the customer service that's awful. Can't really blame the staff, because they're very short handed and stretched thin. There's at most 2 people on the floor at any given time, and one to two overworked staff members at the registers. If something's locked to a shelf, good luck buying it, the keys are akin to a cryptid: all the staff members have seen it, but none can produce evidence of its existence. read more

Given the task to renovate our waiting room, last minute, I'm stuck at what to do with the prints I need to frame within certain time limits. Having had prints gorgeously framed at Michaels before, I immediately drive over with the hope of a miraculous outcome. Then walks Micah. Micah put me at ease with options and, yes, the outcomes were even better than expected. I just had the best experience at Michael's in Studio City. I had a piece of artwork that needed to be framed then shipped from FedEx... TODAY. I bought a pre-made frame (BTW great selection at this location!), and the guys let me prepare my artwork on one of their tables. I brought my own tools, and the guys here were helpful and encouraging. I made today's FedEx pickup time, and I didn't break a sweat once. The Michael's Studio City is my new go-to location. I love love love Michaels so when they put up the sign that this location was opening right down the street from my house, I was over the moon. This is, by far, the best Michaels because there are plenty of people there to help. At most Michaels I wander around in search of an employee but this place is crawling with people eager to help you. I just got married on Saturday and had a variety of crafty-things to do. I must have been in this Michaels everyday for a week and the framing manager, Mr Juan, remembered my wedding date, asked me about it every time I went in, and made sure I had everything I needed. He is a true gem and I am so thankful for all the smiles and phone calls he made to other store in search of items that I needed in large quantity. Thank you Mr Juan!! Well.... Woo - Friggin - Hoo!! Clean. Spacious. Not busy @ 5p. In the words of another Yelper "This might become my main Michael's" This was an unexpectedly, refreshingly, normal / pleasant experience! Who Knew!!! Probably less than 7/8 shoppers. They looked like they were killing time vs (actually shopping for specifics). I tell ya, I was ready for the usual mundane ridiculousness I seem to experience when dashing into a store. But Not This Time. Hot Diggety Dawg, I now know where to go for a few minutes of quiet, and peace while I shop. Hell, I might even go in there for some solitude while i drink my wheat-grass/carrot juice/pomegranate smoothie during my lunch hour. A young lady in the line started talking to me (she has to be new in town). I thought she was talking to herself (lotsa folks do), but no - She was being friendly. Imagine that!!!! Nice :) Studio City could surely use more friendly folks. I was going to give 5 stars, but decided to make it 4. Big-Time Negativo on the customer service piece. I wanted to buy myself a candle so I could chill in my evening sanctuary. Could not find them. No One To Ask. The two girls on the floor looked verryy busy doing (nada). You know that look... the one that says *I'm trying to look busy, but I am soooo Bored - so please do both of us a favor, and do NOT ask me for assistance..... & NO you cannot report me to the Manager, 'cause I am the Manager)! You know that look.... Right :( Ugh I did see a small rack of candles in the foyer on my way out.... They looked too sad for me to consider buying one. BUT, on my next visit I will find the candle stash in the interior of the store. Cause every Michael's has one complete isle dedicated to candles. Also noted, this was the quietest Michael's I have ever been in. Ever. Probably not good for their business. After reading several of the other reviews, I understand a little better as to why the place was so empty. Other Yelper's have complained about the small/tiny parking lot. There were 3 empty spaces when I pulled into the lot. But if there had not been, I would have headed to the underground parking lot. Zillions of empty spaces. Or metered parking on the street. I'll go until I meet resistance. :) As long as the getting is good - - - - - I'll continue to shop here, otherwise...... I'll find another one to suit my fancy, cause I ain't afraid to travel to a *perfect* Michael's store. The Burbank store is smaller, and TRULY has no decent inventory. read more

Easy ordering... went to go to pick up and the person who answers the phone proceeds to tell me that they don't have "curbside pick up." I know we are living in a pandemic but, could they have updated the website?!? I asked her about my online order, she told me to come in and that someone at the cashier would help.. They don't have enough people working so it's hard to ask for help I've walked around for an hour and the only workers there were the two at the counter who were busy and couldn't leave to assist anyone. I really love Michael's. It feels like Disneyland for me, and it can be a tad hard on my wallet, but all magic comes at a price, right? This particular Michael's has never had the best customer service, but I usually know what I'm looking for, so it hasn't really bothered me all that much. One of the things I love about this establishment is the fact that they take competitor coupons, so I was SUPER excited when I received a 60% off coupon for a single item at Joanne's along with a 50% off coupon for a single item at Michael's! I went straight after work, and asked an employee if I would be able to use both. She asked to look at them, and said yes! Yay! Fast forward 30 minutes when I bring my specially selected items to the front. I show the new cashier my coupons, and she tells me not only can they only redeem one, but that it has to be the Michael's one. Ummmm what? That's why I asked first! I finally got the manager to give me the 60% coupon, but come on. I understand why they have that rule, but I also think that if your employee tells a customer something, you need to honor that deal. It was only going to be another $10 off anyways. Train your employees better please, Studio City Michael's! read more

Overall, I can't say it's anything other than the basic standard of what I'd expect from a chain arts supply store. The basic minimums are available for watercolor painting, which isn't so good for me, but there is a lot of other paints of professional caliber so it's good to know I've got room to graduate up. read more

This tiny Michael's is just sad. Terrible location and way too small. Very limited stock. I've come here twice looking for something the website said was IN STOCK at this location. After an ordeal with the busy parking garage, sluggish elevator and clueless staff, the items were declared MIA. I wish corporate would have chosen a better location than this fossil of a shopping complex. They must have gotten a great deal on rent. I think it's better to haul out to Burbank Empire Center, or if you're lucky enough to live in the South Bay go to the ultimate Michael's in Hawthorne! Now THERE's a real store! read more

I have been to this location about 100 times. I can honestly say that every time I have been greeted, and asked if I needed help at least 4-5 times. I think they have great customer service until yesterday... When it became OUTSTANDING- above and beyond awesome! There is a really long story and it's a good one but eventually I spoke to Rhonda the manager. Rhonda helped me In A major way honoring a coupon I had for the same thing in smaller lbs. in turn I had to purchase more but she honored what I was told and used my coupon accordingly so it worked out to be close to the same. I am in the service industry as a hairstylist/ owner for over 17 years. I know how people can be especially during the holidays in a rush. She was professional, kind and warm. She didn't not need to do that but she did to keep the customer happy and I really appreciate that! I love this store even more than before and I will forever be a customer here. THANKS RHONDA! This Michael's is 1/3 the size of the Burbank location, and should change its name to Michael's: fake flowers, pretty boxes and a frame dept. Because that's all they have, really. The parking lot is microscopic, and you have to battle your way through stupid people blocking lanes into the underground lot. Then take two escalators up to the store. Where you will then discover that the layout makes no sense and all the sections are just shoved everywhere, nothing relevant is next to each other. I ran in, in a huge hurry, to grab those little pressed wood decor thingies. Basically, a wasted trip. Nowhere to be found, but their framing section takes up half the store and they have 2-3 aisles of ugly yarn that might have had tumbleweeds blowing through them. And two aisles of those dollar bins, full of useless crap like notepads with glitter covers. Two aisles of frosting supplies and that awful candy wax you can melt down. Wtf, Michael's? Let me know when you're a craft store again that actually carries supplies. Or at least label your locations "Express" or something, so people know it doesn't have all the same stock. It was a totally wasted trip and cost me 30 minutes getting in and out of there.. and I had to drive all the way over to Burbank to get what I needed, which was another hour. Thanks. read more

Although I like this location and they have a little bit of everything I usually need I really don't like to push a cart around and look for the items that I went in there for, find them and then proceed to the register where today (3/28/17) there was a line of about 25 people and only 2 cashiers. I put the things in my cart back on the shelf and walked out. On my way out they added one more check out person. I had to be somewhere and couldn't deal with the 10-15 min wait time. I waited for a weekday because I figured they wouldn't be that busy. read more

Cool store, needs new employees, mainly cashiers (the ones I encountered). I went to Michaels at 7:30pm on a thursday, and wanted to pick up a sketch book. Saw that it was Buy One Get One Free, and the sale said it was on all hardcover sketchbooks. Great, I picked up two and went to the cashier where I had to stand in like for 10 minutes (just one person in front of me with 3 cashiers working). I got to the checkout, turns out the sale didn't include the item I picked up while the sign was right under it and described it perfectly. The cashier told us "it happened before" and "I don't make the signs." No apology for the inconvenience, and she didn't even bother to give us a brief apology or even contact a manager and say "Hey, multiple people have been fooled by this misleading sign." Overall bad customer service. read more

Hands down my fav spot to buy art supplies. Thank God they finally opened this location which is a little closer than the one in Burbank. The selection is usually on point but I have noticed that they run out of select items quicker. The great thing is you can call in advance to see if the have what you need in stock. I normally come for canvases, paint and brushes and they have some great frames as well. The weekly coupons are a game changer! That alone makes Michaels my go to spot. Quality and value!
