This upscale steakhouse is located right across from where we're spending the night in Indian River. From the moment you step into the restaurant, you're greeted with a warm welcome from both the host and the server, and that's grade A quality service! Other than great service, the food was fantastic, especially sharing three tavern menu items - the Tavern burger, the barbecue mac & cheese, and the brussels sprouts! The brussels sprouts were drizzled with a perfect blend of aioli, and compared to other restaurants across the state who serve brussels sprouts as an appetizer, it is the best up north! The burger split between my mother and I were served on two separate plates. How convenient! I also have to mention the bbq macaroni and cheese tasting extremely delicious from the first bite! Then, topping it all off, the four-layer chocolate cake was quite a remarkable exclamation point to a great dinner! I'm generously giving four stars because I really think they tried. The waitress was very kind and helpful. The appetizer of brussel sprouts was delicious. My husband and I both ordered the 8oz filet, prepared medium, and then some shareable sides. When our food came, we cut into our steaks and they were cooked VERY well done. Zero pink inside and incredibly charred on the outside. I've never sent food back in my life, but for $54 for the steak alone, I wanted to be able to eat it. We politely showed our waitress who completely agreed they were very overcooked, and she said they'd be replaced. About 15 minutes later she brought out new steaks. They were unfortunately prepared rare. The outside was quickly seared and that was it. Cool, red center. We ate them because we didn't want to wait any longer, and frankly I'm not one for confrontation -- I was hesitant to send the first steak back but I couldn't eat it. We had already eaten our sides before our "refired" steaks came back out or the sides would have been ice cold. Bummer because the mushrooms were an enhancement for the steak, but the potatoes and asparagus were good. I do find it strange that steaks are sold a'la carte and sides have to be purchased separately. We are from out of state and are not accustomed to that. The log cabin feel was nice and the outdoor area was beautiful as well. I'm wondering if they just had an "off" night or were training a new chef, as many other reviews are raving. read more

Well it's been about 1 year since our last visit, & not only did we order the same meals as last year, but we were fortunate enough to have our same server Virginia. She is one of the rare people in the business that takes it to the level of professionalism as she does with grace. The Shrimp Cocktail is the best in northern Michigan, if not all of Michigan. Visited Friday for the first time. What a hidden treasure. Our server was very attentive, each of our dinners including house and their version of the wedge salad were very appealing. We had dinner last evening at Michaels and our fabulous server was Virginia!! She was attentive with a smile and very throughout our evening. Thank you Virginia. our only issue was that two of my friends ordered the Tagliatelle at 27$. Which itself was lovely though instead of the tagliatelle as listed on the menu it was normal spaghetti!! So it was a substitution that was never told to the two ladies who ordered. That's not right Michaels at all! I did mention and tell our server, and as we left I spoke to the what I thought was the manager. I got no real reaction from him at him other than an Oh.... Hmmm. We travel to Northern Michigan several times a year and we make sure we visit Michael's every single time. We live in Los Angeles and we will pit Michael's up against any restaurant in LA. We had an amazing experience at Michael's Tavern & Steakhouse during our summer trip up to Michigan. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem in Indian River, MI! We loved all the options to chose from the wine list to dinner choices. We all ordered a variety of drinks and then our entrees. We tried a lot from the 72 Hour Short Rib, NY Strip, and Smoked Chicken Tacos. Each dish was perfectly cooked and flavored! The Short Rib was my personal favorite and I would most definitely recommend to others, but all were great! For dessert we had the Oreo Stuffed Donuts. OMG, they were amazing! We ordered more to take home! This is a must try for anyone in the area and a highly recommend! We will always make sure to stop in when visiting the area! read more

Michaels is a fantastic place. Several seating options -inside, outside, covered patio -all with wonderful ambiance. The food was extraordinary. Fresh local made bread to begin, and our meals were all stupendous-steaks seasoned so perfectly, very tender and grilled to perfection. We enjoyed several different cocktails and they were all excellent. Virginia our server was friendly and gracious and had wonderful suggestions for us and was a lot of fun. We made a reservation for the New Year's Eve special menu. When we arrived we were promptly seated and ordered drinks. After we were enjoying the drinks the server came to take our order. We said we wanted the New Year's Eve menu and only then were we told that it wasn't available because the lobster didn't come in! Had we known, we would have gone elsewhere. The restaurant had my email because I had to confirm the reservation and at the least, the staff should have immediately told us when we arrived and before we ordered drinks. It's also strange that lobster bisque was available when the lobster "didn't come in." No wonder there were no visible pieces of lobster in the bisque. Yes, the food was good but the experience was disappointing. read more
