This was one of the best dining experiences we've had in Hawaii and will be back for more. The service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff remembered our names and struck the perfect balance between being attentive and giving us space to enjoy the evening. The waterfront views are nice and make for a perfect date night setting. Everything we ordered was fantastic, but the seafood platter truly stood out. It was easily the best seafood platter we've had to date and worth every penny. I rarely order dessert, but I'm glad we did here. The soufflé was incredible and the perfect way to end the meal. Outstanding meal with the beautiful warm view...our servers MaryAnn and Keeton just made our evening...Always smiling and very attentive...loved the lavosh and she gave me plenty...the duck l' orange egg soup was so cutely prepared but oh so much flavor...loved the cleansing sorbet was perfect...while our server Keeton was so attentive I got to know him and just can't wait til he becomes the waiter...he's gonna be so great! So we had a delicious onion soup and lobster bisque...our hostess flamed our lobster and it was quite the cool presentation...she's good! I had a terrible experience with Michel's and would not recommend them based on how this was handled. I purchased a nice bottle of wine for my dad and his wife's 10-year anniversary because I knew they were dining there. I triple-confirmed with the staff ahead of time that the bottle had been purchased, that it would be delivered to their table, and that the server would be aware of the arrangement. Not only was the message never relayed internally, but it created an incredibly awkward and embarrassing situation. The server apparently believed I had paid for the entire dinner rather than just the bottle of wine. My dad and his wife were under the impression that the whole meal had been taken care of. To make matters worse, the restaurant initially charged my card and then later canceled the charge. Instead of contacting me to clarify the situation, they called my dad after he and his wife had already left the restaurant to inform him that they still owed money and requested his credit card information over the phone to process the payment. Imagine celebrating your 10-year anniversary and then getting a call afterward saying you "forgot" to pay your bill. That is incredibly awkward and unacceptable. At no point did the restaurant proactively reach out to me... the person who coordinated and paid for the wine to explain the internal miscommunication. There was no accountability until I called to address it myself. Only then did they apologize and offer a future credit for them. What should have been a thoughtful anniversary gesture turned into an unnecessary embarrassment due to poor internal communication and lack of ownership. Extremely disappointing. read more

I booked a table at "the most romantic restaurant in Honolulu" as I didn't want to dine at Arancino at The Kahala or the Plumeria Beach House more than once each as Hoku's and The Veranda weren't open on Tuesday. I was seated at a table across from the tables adjacent to the window tables, but I had a beautiful view of the beach, looking Westward. I went with their Tasting Menu ($130), a five-course meal featuring some of their classic dishes. I added the Premium Wine Pairing ($80). The first dish was ahi tartare, an artful presentation of ahi chunks, topped with pesto, red pepper aioli, créme fraiche, and sturgeon caviar and three crisps. It was served with a glass of Veuve Clicquot, a wonderful pairing. Course two was Lobster Bisque Á la Michel's, served tableside, flamed in brandy. A 2022 Duckhorn Vineyards Chardonnay was a good, but not stellar match for the bisque. Course three was Michel's Caesar Salad, prepared tableside. It's one of the best Caesar salads I've had. It was paired with a 2023 Chateau D'Estoublon 'Roseblood', a very inexpensive, but refreshing rosé from Provence. I don't usually have wine with salad, so it wasn't important to me. An intermezzo of some kind of sorbet was the palate refresher. The main dish was Filet Mignon Rossini, a perfectly cooked filet topped with a generous piece of foie gras, truffle Madeira sauce, and mashed potatoes with haricot verts. It was served with a 2021 Duckhorn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, surprisingly smooth for a youngish cab. Dessert was the Chocolate Decadence Cake, with raspberry coulis. I asked the server to omit the vanilla bean gelato. A glass of Graham's 20-year Tawny Port was the perfect finish to an excellent meal. It was a value too, at $269.90, including tip. Beautiful ambiance and an amazing view. This was my first time at Michel's and I had a great experience overall. If you're looking for a place with a gorgeous ocean view, attentive staff, and a true fine-dining atmosphere, this is definitely the spot. The food was delicious. I ordered the filet mignon and lobster. The steak was cooked perfectly to my liking, and the lobster was incredibly buttery and flavorful. Dessert was also a 10/10 and a great way to end the meal. The prices are what you would expect for fine dining, so be prepared for that. My only complaint was the wait time for the food, which was over an hour. What began as a lovely evening to celebrate a special occasion turned into one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had in years. Our server repeatedly asked us at the very end of the night to recommend Michel's to our family and friends. This is my recommendation: If you're looking for good service and a true fine-dining experience, don't come here. The issue wasn't a lack of effort, it was that our server treated us as if we were an inconvenience. He would irritably pull back utensils if anyone moved, insist we remove menus from plates before pouring champagne, and correct us at every opportunity. He also unprompted boasted about his credentials, how he was recruited to Michel's, and his years in the industry. Unfortunately, we were not receiving the level of service he described. Our server was off-putting from the start; condescending, and with a corrective tone in both voice and manner. When our table asked if a salad could be split, he cut us off and said, "I will take your order, and your order only. Any accommodations can be made later." We were simply trying to order two Caesar salads split among four people. Despite this interaction, we gave him grace and expected he would return to handle the accommodation. He never did. We were left splitting our own salads and had to ask for extra plates. When we requested them, another server responded, "You should have told us. We would have split it for you." Although we were clearly celebrating a milestone, while not mandatory, restaurants of this caliber typically make at least a small effort to acknowledge special occasions. There was no warmth shown whatsoever aside from brief interactions with Michael, who was beyond excellent. Five stars to him. While the setting itself is elegant and the food was very good, the atmosphere at our table felt uncomfortable rather than celebratory. Delicious food and a nice view cannot make up for service that leaves guests feeling unwelcome. Mahalo, but no thank you. (edit: forgot mention Maria's Smoked Old Fashioned, which was elegantly presented and, according to her, excellent). The Caesar Salad (prepared at the table) was one of the tastiest I have ever had, and very artistically and attractively made. The French Onion En Croute soup had a puff pastry on top rather than the standard bread/cheese. Congratulations on trying something different, but it really didn't work for me. And not quite enough cheese. Sort of bland. Maira (the Beautiful Italian) thought the Lobster Bisque was tasty but watery. She had the oyster appetizer for dinner and said it was fine, but thought the mint mignonette was an excellent touch. Our dinner companions said their main courses were "fine". I can't for the life of me remember what they had - I need to get to these reviews sooner! We had the coconut cheesecake and chocolate soufflé for desert and both were good, but nothing to write home about. The food at Michel's wasn't what I was expecting it's very overpriced and bland. The best thing I had was the Mexican Coke at $5 dollars a bottle. I should have known better to eat there it smelled like fish and the carpet was old and warn out. The restaurant decor and atmosphere was dated like a 1960s funeral home. The restaurant doesn't live up to all its hype. The lobster bisque had very little lobster and not much flavor, as for the Caesar salad $26 per person with a 2 person minimum is robbery it's just salad. The main course wasn't much better the lobster also lacked any flavor and seasoning. The best part of my beef Wellington was the mashed potatoes even though I got a very small portion. The dessert wasn't much better. The only good thing at the restaurant was the view and the waiter was good at table side story telling he was a master at his craft. We had dinner reservations and were immediately brought to our table upon arrival. The view from our table was absolutely stunning! Our waiter brought lavash, garlic butter and water for everyone and gave us a few moments to review the beverage menu. After our beverages were brought to the table, we ordered the French Onion Soup and Double Ribeye for two. The soup was absolutely delicious! We loved the puff pastry that was baked on top of the soup dish. The ribeye steak was really flavorful and big enough to fill everyone! Of course we had to save room for dessert so we bagged our leftovers and ordered the Cherry Jubilee.. OMG! This has to be my favorite dessert here.. the sauce is to die for! Needless to say, the dessert was devoured and everyone left full and happy. I highly recommend this restaurant! My steak was perfect and the Swordfish also was great. The best thing was the soufflé, they only have Chocolate on the menu. They used to have Grand Marnier as well. One of the best restaurants for a fancy date night! Came here for our anniversary dinner and we both loved it! Apparently we got lucky because the balcony view had been closed for a while and they had just reopened the sliding doors. The view was so pretty and we caught a great sunset! Now on to the food and drinks! I had the green flash which was super tasty! It was kinda a play on a pina colada and which I love. My boyfriend had the blue hummingbird which was poured table side over a purple ice cube which was pretty cool! We ordered the escargot and Caesar salad to share. I had the lobster bisque and my boyfriend had the French onion soup. Everything was great! The Caesar is prepared table side and you can really taste the garlic and anchovy paste in the dressing. They also put anchovy slices on top if you want (something my boyfriend really likes)! The lobster bisque is also served table side- the soup is already made but they flambé the lobster topper table side. Entree wise I had the filet with lobster which was delicious. Both were cooked perfectly- the lobster was so soft and tender! My boyfriend had the beef Wellington which he enjoyed. Our server also recommended doing the sauces on the side so the puff pastry stayed puffed which we appreciated! It also let him try the sauces separately. For dessert we had the bananas foster and they gave us a complementary white chocolate moose for our anniversary! The bananas fosters (& cherries jubilee) are prepared table side as well. Both deserts were great! And the ice cream for the bananas foster was kept frozen during the preparation so it wasn't all melted. Prices are kinda what you expect for a fine dining. I'd say it's worth going especially for special occasions. Service is great! Our server checked on us after a bite or two of every dish despite being busy with table side service for her other tables. They also try to come around when you use the restroom to fold your napkin (again if they aren't in the middle of table side). Parking wise we did valet but I believe you might be able to self park but just need to walk a little more. TL;DR: Husband and I absolutely loved our 5th wedding anniversary dinner at Michel's last March for the amazing food, service, and sunset! My husband and I recently shared our 5th wedding anniversary dinner at the legendary Michel's at the Colony Surf. I wanted a restaurant a step above Roy's in ambiance, but with food still tasty and filling that we wouldn't regret spending a few Benjamins for. I chose Michel's for three reasons: 1. One of my Yelp Elite friends recently reviewed this restaurant. As someone who rarely does fine dining, she gave Michel's a pretty decent review. I'd rather take fine dining recommendations from personal contacts! 2. Lack of social media presence from those local Gen Z influencers initially made me wonder if Michel's would survive into our tenth wedding anniversary. I hope it does survive! 3. It is THE Michel's with THE sunset view that attracts celebrities and tourists...the same restaurant that's been operating since 1962. I honestly thought Michel's was going to be stuffy, quaint, dark and slow, but the service was great, the sunset was beautiful, and the food and wine were amazing. Tips to catch that sunset view: - Take Yelp Elite Peter N's advice: make early reservations, check sunset times for your reservation date, and set your reservation 30 minutes before sunset mid October-February, or 15 minutes before sunset the rest of the year. - Make a reservation 2-3 months in advance. Service was attentive, but efficient and not as slow as what my friend experienced. Perhaps it was because hubby and I had an early reservation, that we were just a party of 2, or that our order was simple--two orders of the prix fixe menu? Our prix fixe menu consisted of: 1. AHI TARTARE: Delicious and loved the local touch with wonton chips served on the side. It reminded me of eating ahi poke with wonton chips at the beach. 2. LOBSTER BISQUE A LA MICHEL'S: Prepared table side. The lobster bisque was definitely worth the hype. It's a classic for a reason. The brandy made a difference to the flavors of the bisque. 3. MICHEL's CAESAR SALAD: Another classic and also prepared table side. This is authentic Caesar salad! Hubby and I were apprehensive at the thought of consuming raw egg at first. Fortunately, a neighboring table also ordered the Caesar salad. We saw the table side server squeeze heaps of lemon juice, "cooking" the eggs. 4. FILET MIGNON ROSSINI: Thanks to Michel's I finally understand why filet mignon is sought after. The filet was tender and flavorful. My husband and I only ordered one drink from the wine pairing menu, and it had to be the one for the main course. The Cabernet Sauvignon complemented the filet mignon so well. Definitely, by this course, my husband and I felt like royalty and wished we were millionaires to eat like this often. 5. BELGIUM CHOCOLATE DECADENCE CAKE: I love that the cake batter was balled up and was the right texture..pretty unique! The raspberry coulis definitely matched the warm chocolate cake, and so did the vanilla bean gelato. It was a celebration of flavors and textures. Bonus: complimentary anniversary dessert which looked a tasted like a cheesecake mousse with a raspberry on top and a swoop of raspberry sauce. The dessert look simple and small, but it was decadent and filling. Keep in mind that because some of Michel's most popular items are prepared table side, involving cooking down alcohol (lobster bisque, bananas foster, cherries jubilee), your clothes will smell like one of these items, most especially the smell of lobster. I personally didn't mind because my husband and I smelled like we came from an excellent restaurant! Michel's has been serving Waikiki for over 60 years. May they last another 60! I always thought it'd be way too expensive and snooty for my taste. But it was a family member's birthday, so we went out for sunset dinner. The meal is an ordeal. Each course is really a course and the entire dining experience took about 3 hours. Just keep that in mind if that's of any concern to you - or perhaps a perk! When we arrived, the Valet was helpful and told us exactly where to go so we don't end up in the Laundromat by mistake. We were seated quickly near the huge picture window with a beautiful view of the beach and ocean. Too bad it was a little "gloomy" day. The waiter, Stuart, took our drink orders and was very attentive to our needs. We had the Poke Nachos and Escargot for appetizers which were really good. We also ordered a Ceaser salad that was made table side. Just a hint of too much anchovies (salty) for my liking but my wife and some enjoyed it. Our entree's came in perfect timing. I had the Duck LaOrange which was delicious. My wife ordered the Special of the day which was a NY Steak with Oysters. She said it would have been better if the sauce they put in the steak was on the side as it was a little too much for her liking. My son ordered a 14oz NY Steak with a side Baked Lobster Tail. He said the Filet with Lobster would have been too small. He is a high school football player so he eats a lot LOL. Picked Michel's as our finest dining for this trip with a 5:45 reservation for sunset views. Arrived just in time for a perfect sunset. Just wish there weren't beach goers in front of windows in front of restaurant but couldn't help that. Just know (for you reading this and making your decisions) that there is a small beach in front and you will have beach goers in front of your view. But it is an amazing view. There are two menus to choose from: tasting and a la carte. We chose a la carte for the options. We haven't had a 'table side' Caesar salad in ages and let me tell you, Michael blew us away with this salad and our wonderful conversation. So much so, we asked to switch him to be our server. (In all honesty we didn't have a very good experience with our original server for multiple reasons, so being allowed to switch to Michael saved the day). Thank you Rhonda for helping us during our visit to Michel's, understanding and meeting our needs with the food and our server- we wouldn't have had such an amazing time celebrating our vacation. Food: again- table side Caesar salad was to die for with such fresh Parmesan cheese, perfect amounts of garlic and anchovy sauce (we skipped on the actual anchovies) and fresh lettuce. My man had originally ordered the NY Cafe De Paris Steak with a few substitutions of potatoes and asparagus - unfortunately the steak and vegetables were not cooked well. But they replaced them with an amazing filet and potatoes that were truly delicious. I had the Island Style Steamed Fish (sea bass this evening) - and while cooked perfectly I was disappointed in the flavor, it seemed very bland, I probably should have stuck with my gut and got filet and lobster. But the fish and everything on my plate were cooked perfectly. Additional person to point out- shout out to Jacob- I have never ever been at a restaurant where I have paid so much attention to who gave me (actually served me my food) as much as with Jacob. His attention to detail, explanation of the plate and what I was going to be eating, just blew me away. And I told him, I had too - he impressed me so much. {Jacob- if you're going to school for management / hospitality/ anything like this -- you are definitely going to have a great career because at a young age you get it. We drove to Michel's and were greeted by the valet attendant who was outstanding. Very friendly. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly host -- she walked us to our table and pulled out both of our chairs and I just KNEW we would enjoy this experience. Our server Brandy introduced herself and recommended cocktails we should try. As we waited for our drinks, we enjoyed the views of the beach and the restaurant itself. The ambiance was so delightful we both couldn't stop smiling. Our drinks arrived and we toasted to taking our time and enjoying our evening. We ordered a cold seafood platter and two orders of oysters. DELICIOUS. The server's assistant (very shy girl, I think her name was Nehua? Something Hawaiian :,) sorry girl) was also very sweet and super attentive. We ordered our main dishes and some of them came with table side service. The Caesar salad, the lobster bisque and the banana flambé were all table side and I loved it because we got to enjoy our apps & drinks while watching a little show lol. Anyways-- Brandy and everyone else there is fantastic. Even when I was walking to the restroom, another attendant asked if I needed help locating it. All of the waitstaff were kind and very helpful. The tableside presentation of the lobster bisque and Caesar salad was a very unique and cool touch. Located on the outskirts of Waikiki, this is one of my family's favorite place to go for celebrations, with oceanfront views of Waikiki. Free valet parking is provided by Elite, just don't provide to tip your valet guy at the end of the night. As for the service, always on point and attentive to your needs. Big shout out to Kai for providing us excellent service this evening. Also very cautious about nut allergies which I appreciated very much. Anything that you order on the menu, you can't go wrong. There are a few items that are served tableside like some of the salads, soups and desserts. And the mains come out from the kitchen out back. As for the restaurant itself, it feels like it pulls you back into time, when you get there, you'll see what I mean, especially the restrooms (actual hand towels, as opposed to only paper). But the servers vacuum and clean-up well in between table turns so it keeps its grandeur. And unbeknownst to me, we timed this perfectly to the Nagaoka fireworks that come once a year to the city. Our server opened up the windows, so we could get an even clearer view and it was the best way to end the night. Even without the fireworks, the windows are normally open on a good night, but it was windy and kept blowing out the table side fire service, so they closed it for safety reasons. My Girlfriend and I just celebrated our 3rd and 4th year anniversary at Michaels and the service was absolutely fantastic and the staff was amazing! The food met our expectations and was very delicious! I wanna give a huge thanks to Michael our server, he went above and beyond with making sure our food was cooked properly and making us feel at home! Michels is a perfect venue for a romantic or special meal. If you make your reservation far enough in advance you can be seated ocean side with unobstructed views of the ocean, sunset and the city line of Waikiki. The dining room is traditional decor with white tablecloths and crystal chandeliers. The servers and staff are abundant and focused on making each guest feel welcome and special. We came for our anniversary dinner and at least three staff congratulated us. Our primary server was exceptional. He connected with us and made recommendations. We had several of their specialty cocktails. I tried the Sunset Daiquiri, made of mango. It was refreshing and delicious. We tried the Caesar salad which is made fresh table side. He described each ingredient (double checking with for food allergies). The salads were delicious. We were treated to a complimentary salmon tartar served on a cucumber which was very good. I ordered the Cioppino The broth is added tableside to a large bowl of freak shellfish and fresh fish. The broth was tangy and flavorful. The seafood was juicy and cooked to perfection. There were assorted clams, mussels, crab, shrimp, lobster and more in the dish. The meal was served with a dinner roll which was just ok. My husband had the filet and lobster tail served with smashed potatoes, 2 asparagus and a cabbage reduction. The steak was cooked to perfection for him. The meal was delicious. They treated us to an anniversary dessert of merengue cookie, mango sorbet and a berry reduction. It was vary good. We also ordered a chocolate soufflé which took 15 minutes to prepare but was worth the wait. The soufflé is filled tableside with a warm custard. The dessert was heavenly. Finally, we enjoyed a bowl of their hazelnut chocolate gelato. The ice cream was decadently rich. All in all, a wonderful experience and special dinner. Prices are high, but the service is exquisite and the view unforgettable. They offer valet parking. read more

Michel's at the Colony Surf is the definition of fine dining! To be honest I was a little intimidated by the online menu, but my husband and I were invited to dinner by a friend, and I am so glad we went. We were lucky enough to be seated at a table by the window with an absolutely breathtaking view. We ordered the Caesar salad to share, which was made from scratch at the table. It was quite a presentation, and is known as a favorite on the menu! For our main course we enjoyed the Beef Wellington, which was excellent! The service was next level! We recently celebrated our wedding anniversary here, and it was truly a memorable experience. The ambiance, the food, and the service was exceptional. One little detail that caught my attention was the unique dish container used for the dessert presentation. AT first glance, it made me chuckle because it reminded me of something unexpected.
