With Chase Sapphire Reserve, they offer a dining spend at select restaurants and Hau Tree was one of them, so we decided to have dinner here on one of the night's on the trip. The best thing about this restaurant is definitely the views. To dine beach side and catch a sunset, it was a photogenic spot to have a meal for sure. The food left a little bit to be desired though. Keep in mind it is attached to a hotel so not only was our expectations lower but we knew going it was going to be a pricy meal regardless. We started with their chips and rainbow caviar dip, which we added the ossetra caviar for an additional $20. The dip was tasty but going for the extra caviar isn't a need to have. For the mains we shared a couple of dishes: the fennel sausage pasta and the seared local fish. Both were recommendations from our server as best sellers. I didn't find there to much stand out flavors in either dish though. The pasta was fine, cooked al dente, but the sauce was bit lacking. The seared local fish was tasty, but the portions were tiny. We ended up adding salt to both dishes. I think for the price point, we didn't think the flavor and value matched at all. The server we had was great though. She was super nice and answered all our questions. Food came out timely, and we never felt rushed throughout our dinner experience. Not factored into my rating but just an observation. This is a spot where people are going to take a lot of pictures. Totally understandable, however, we had a group of people taking multiple pictures with flash for nearly 20 minutes straight. decided to make a reservation at hau for my boyfriend and i's anniversary and had a great experience. checked in and we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for our table but the lobby had comfortable seatings. our server luke was extremely sweet and helpful with the menu, especially for our first time. the setting is more intimate and classy and there's great views of the ocean/beach. as for the food, i'd say it was pretty good but nothing super special. their focaccia bread is one of their more popular apps, and it was fluffy/airy with the yummy balsamic brown butter. the pastas tasted good and were cooked nicely, but truly just average pasta. everything came out about room temperature, but i also understand we're near the beach so the winds probably cool it down tremendously fast. with all that in mind, i'd say this spot definitely looks good for the photos but you can find much better tasting italian food with much more reasonable prices. read more

Excellent food. Our server Michael was very kind and attentive. My boyfriend and I went here to celebrate my birthday dinner and enjoyed everything we ate here from the oysters, to our drinks (piña colada & lava flow) and our dinner which was a pasta and miso ceasar salad with seared ahi. The ahi was perfect. Birthday dessert was a guava chiffon cake, small but enjoyable. Wish we tried the coconut cake! Came here for the first time for my anniversary. Our server Malia was awesome and the food was good! We went on a Friday night after the sunset and we got to see the Hilton fireworks. We ordered the miso Caesar salad (dressing on the side), strip loin medium rare it was a little salty and it came with a creamy sauce, and monchong with a side of their ginger scallion rice. Overall everything was great the only thing I didn't care for all the flys and bugs but we sat outside and it was attracted to the light. The monchong was the highlight of the night, the fish was perfect. I usually don't care for Caesar salad but this was one was a must try- it was so good I wanted more! It was nice that they split into two plates since we were sharing. Malia was great, she was accommodating my food dislikes such as garlic. She told me what things had garlic in it and she made sure the sauces were on the side. On top of that, she gave us a free dessert. Anyone in the area should definitely check out Hau Tree but I recommend making reservations if you want to have a dine in experience, it was packed and we had to wait for alittle even though we came in early. read more

Wow! Thank you Hau Tree. We were seated outside right in front of the baby monk seal. The view was beautiful and it was a beachy vibe. It was hot, but the hostess brought us fans and was very accommodating if we needed to move. The fish was delicious, the produce tasted so fresh (salad and tomatoes) so it was worth the $$ to me just because nothing was "tired."The pasta was also cooked perfectly al dente. Booked a birthday dinner at Hau Tree for the sunset and beachside views! You can book 30 days in advance online which I recommend if you're looking for the specific sunset time to time it right. Very limited parking and we had to valet it which came out to only $10 with restaurant validation. Service was friendly but felt slow. Food was decent but I just wasn't impressed. I've never complained about large portions but why were there so many dang potatoes as the side it was so wasteful and didn't taste that great either. Tuesday 830pm I was looking to reserve a table for three guests two days before I wanted to have dinner, but the only options were 8:30pm and later. When we arrived there were plenty of tables available. I was a little concerned about the wind and the cold (60s) because we were seated outdoors but it was perfect, probably because we were enclosed by trees and walls. I'm glad we sat outside because in the dark (no sunset to watch over Kaimana beach) the setting was still beautiful. We ordered the crispy octopus, kale and spinach salad, eggplant, burrata and tomatoes, mango whoopsie, fudge, and banoffee tiramisu. The kale salad had quite a bit of gorgonzola on it, so I got to eat most of it. I liked the banoffee tiramisu and eggplant. I LOVED the burrata and tomatoes. Who knew olive tamponade went with tomatoes? I could have made a meal with just the eggplant and the burrata tomatoes. I have always remembered valeting my car, but this time we parked for free at the meters that were free after 6pm, just across the street. I made an Opentable Sunday brunch reservation and requested a table against the wall next to the beach (which we received), and indicated we were there for our anniversary. Great venue and good food. We parked across the street for 3 hours of parking for $1.44 on a Sunday (it is free until 10am on Sun). We started with a cinnamon roll ($16/ea) and two different Mai Tias ($19/ea). With the cinnamon roll being the standout item. Both Mai Tias were good but I would stick with the Waikiki Mai Tai over the 1944 Mai Tai. Next we ordered a fish sandwich ($27) and a burger ($28). The fish sandwich was unique-enough and tasty. The burger was nothing special. Both came with McDonald skinny fries. Seeing some of the brunch items around me, I'd do a benedict and some other breakfast item next time and skip the sandwiches. The burger is on HH for $20 which better aligns with its presentation and fries. We got a complementary slice of cake and two glasses of champagne for our anniversary celebration. celebrated a birthday lunch here during the week. Haven't been here since forever. First thing I noticed was that they cut back the hau and kept the section of the tree that is more toward the beach. But i like it-it's more airy and open. We parked in the Kaimana hotel lot-valet. It's $10 for 3 hours with validation but no need. Just tell the valet you're going to the Hau Tree. It was a lovely day and loved looking over at the beach. Too bad Rocky the seal wasn't there yet. Not pupping season just yet I guess. The service was fantastic-our server Jennifer was friendly and gracious and we were checked on often. the food-- I had the Shakshuka ($24) and asked for it no added salt. It was great! The spices were delicious. It came in a small cast iron dish with 4 pieces of perfectly toasted bread. So far this was the best shakshuka I've had. The egg was nice and runny and made the dish even creamier. Hubby had the calamansi pancakes ($23). Our server told us it was her favorite and I can see why. The pancakes were piled high and topped with citrus cream with calamansi syrup on the side. The pancakes were very fluffy and light and the citrus flavor really complimented the sweetness. If you like pancakes, this is it! And to end it all, Jennifer brought out a little guava cake sprinkled with coconut on a plate with Happy Birthday in chocolate on the house! What a great surprise! I've been here a few times, but this visit officially sold me. I started with the lemon chamomile tea, which was really nice and warm, a cozy way to begin the meal. We ordered the half dozen oysters. Honestly, they were a bit pricey, but that's kind of expected in Hawaii. Our server mentioned they were Kusshi oysters from the Pacific Northwest. They were fine on their own, but I definitely recommend asking for Tabasco and mignonette to bring out more flavor. The focaccia was incredible. Truly one of my favorite parts of the meal. So soft and flavorful. I loved the oil and absolutely mopped up every bit of the spread. The kale and spinach salad was also a hit. The Greek goddess dressing tied everything together beautifully. For mains, we ordered family style. The pistou bucatini had interesting noodles. I've never seen them shaped like that before and they looked homemade. It was really good overall, and the chicken was incredibly tender. The king salmon was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the peas were such a delightful addition. But the true standout for our table was the roasted squash... oh my god. It literally melted in my mouth and ended up being my favorite dish. I loved the little pomegranate pops for texture and sweetness. The service was immaculate. Our food came out so quick. Jonah, our server, was amazing. He was very attentive, kind, and thoughtful throughout the meal. I would 100% recommend coming on a Friday around 7:30 PM so you can catch the fireworks, which makes the whole experience feel extra special with the ocean in the background. I was able to request a table by the beach through OpenTable, which made the experience even better. As a bonus, if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card, they offer a $150 credit for this restaurant, which is a great perk. The food, however, was more of a 3/5. The focaccia bread was overly salty--and that's coming from someone who really enjoys salty food. The fish entrée was dry, lacked flavor, and definitely needed more sauce. Portion sizes were also on the smaller side for the price point. Overall, I still had a good experience thanks to the views and atmosphere. Hau Tree is one of the better Waikiki brunch places imo - even though it's pricey (as is all of Waikiki), the food is decent and the seating is so cute. The downstairs patio along the beach is the nicest spot, but because the whole area is an open air lanai, the inside seating is also beautiful. I had the calamansi ricotta pancakes, which was a huge serving and had calamansi curd between each pancake in the stack. I wouldn't come here just for that, but I would get it again. The service was also wonderful - we were almost an hour late to our reservation (oops) because we got lost and then had to hunt for parking, but they were extremely accommodating when we called and held a table for us long past the 15 minute grace period. read more

I honestly don't understand why this restaurant is so highly reviewed. Yes, the view is a million dollar view but that's all this restaurant has going for itself. It's indoor/outdoor seating with the view of Waikīkī Beach and the Pacific Ocean. That's about all the positive I have to say about this restaurant. I'll list some issues that we feel should be worked on: - If the restaurant isn't full and customers have reservations, don't make them wait unnecessarily. This happened to us and it felt very inane that we could see empty tables yet they still made us wait when we had reservations. - Be consistent with serving bread to customers. We saw several tables receive bread but we didn't receive bread. It would have been great because it took forever for them to come and take our order and we were hungry. - Speed up the serving process. We didn't understand why it took so long to get the appetizer. It took even longer to get our pasta and lamb. Drinks took forever as well. The place wasn't busy so we really didn't understand why it took so long for everyone there. This was a common complaint as we talked among ourselves as we waited for our food. - If you make diners wait so long for food, make sure it's incredible. The food came out extremely underwhelming and tasted just mediocre. It was not worth the wait nor the price point. Very overpriced for the portion size and what you actually get. There are a lot of issues here but if you are a tourist that wants to have a SLOW meal with an ocean view, this is the place. For everyone who doesn't want to wait FOREVER to eat then you probably want to skip this restaurant. There are lots of restaurants with amazing views that you can dine at. 1.5 stars. read more

Had my 5-year anniversary here and it had a gorgeous view! My partner and I ate at the bar-like seating facing the ocean and it was so pretty. The sun was blasting us for a good 15 minutes and it got pretty hot but the staff finally put the sun shade down which helped so much. Food was beautifully presented. I wish I got a photo of the appetizer but it was placed on a branch-like log and it was super delicious! Drinks had a nice balance of alcohol in them and tasted great. Came here for breakfast yesterday. We love this place and I've already done a few reviews but wanted to update on a couple of things we noticed in the past year. Hostesses are always welcoming and friendly, giving us a nice table. The Hau tree has been trimmed back quite a bit so you don't have to worry about hitting your head on the low branches anymore. Also there used to be pigeons everywhere but noticed none were walking on tables or alighting on empty food plates. Name tags of staff now include their hometown which is a nice touch. Service here is always excellent. Breakfast, lunch or dinner we have always had a professional, kind and competent server, busser, and staff who bring out the food. The second thing we noticed is last we were here they didn't have oysters. This time they didn't have passion fruit iced tea at 10:30 am. Not sure why but what with all the changes in the world, we were understanding about it. Next time we will call ahead to ask if they have a certain item we would like to order. Chau was our sweet server this time and she made sure we were well taken care of without being obtrusive. The food came out quickly and correctly, same goes for coffee and busser doing refills on it and water. Table was cleared of dirty plates immediately too. Husband ordered oysters, and although they were fresh and good, it was served with ponzu sauce, so he spooned some of his Bloody Mary on top to give it the spice and flavor he prefers. Although I still miss their papaya chicken salad, we still return for other new fare that doesn't fail to delight. The view is part of the experience right on the beach - watching the waves, surfers, paddlers, parasailers and sometimes a seal and pup. Restrooms in lobby on your way in and out are smallish but usually clean. If you can't find parking on street, they offer Valet parking for a flat rate of $10 plus tip. These guys are great and it's nice if you have anyone who is elderly as car comes right up to the hotel door. read more

A bit disappointed with how our dinner went here :/ Made a surprise dinner reservation in advance for sunset time since it was me and my husband's 6th year anniversary and also our babymoon. We noticed the table next to us that their waitress immediately greeted them upon being seated for celebrating a birthday, so pretty bummed our reservation note wasn't acknowledged. Once I asked for the check though, they ended up giving a complimentary slice of cake that said "Congratulations" so can't be mad at that. The potato's come with a sauce similar to a chimichurri sauce, which elevated the flavors. The poached egg for one of our tables Benedict's was a little over cooked so the egg wasn't runny, which was a little disappointing. Drinks were very tasty and refreshing. Overall opinion: the view is the only reason people come here and it isn't even as good as it could be. If you don't get a seat on the bottom floor, don't expect to have a good view - and you probably won't get ground floor seating as there are only about 6-7 tables on that floor. The building was beautiful as it is located inside a hotel, however the actual restaurant had little to no seating and when we went, us alongside 5 other families had to wait an hour. The menu was INCREDIBLY small with maybe only 30 different options for meals and half of them being "small bites." Portion size was silly compared to how long we had to wait for a table and how hyped up the place is. If you're just looking for some high end drinks then the place is great though - large alcohol menu but practically nothing else. read more

Decided to give this place a try ... made reservations for a party of 7 via Open Table; 11:30am on a Thursday in the middle of June. Quite a lot of people dining but our party was seated right away. Located inside the Kaimana Beach Hotel, Hau Tree offers ocean front / ocean view dining. The only downfall is that you'll have people who are there for Kaimana beach rather close to your dining area. All shapes, all sizes, all levels of noise, all ages of crying children right there! Another downfall is the birds! Staff does do a great job at shoo'ing away the birds but they're there and they are seeking any opportunity to get your food, so keep an eye out! Started with the Hau Tree Bloody Mary ($18) was good but not remarkable and the price is expected for Waikīkī tourist area restaurant. They offer 4 different Benedict options (traditional with ham; avocado; cured salmon; and snow crab) along with additions that can be added to any Benedict (bacon $4; spinach $4; avocado $6). I chose the cured salmon Benedict ($33) which is served with tossed greens and their crispy potatoes that are topped with salsa verde. The dish overall was a solid, OK. The hollandaise sauce was probably the best followed closely by the tossed greens. Hollandaise sauce was of a thicker consistency - sort of like whipped cream but flavor was on point, delicious. My only problem was the salmon which was a little mushy for my liking. I love salmon in all ways - grilled; smoked; baked; sashimi style. This cured salmon was sliced thick and didn't have much flavor and again was mushy - to be honest, idk if that's how cured salmon should taste. But overall, all the flavor of this dish came from the hollandaise. Poached egg was cooked perfectly. My daughter had the Kaimana Beach Burger ($27) which we asked to have it prepared medium. It is served with a side of fries. You can make it a bacon burger for an additional $4. Burger is thick and was cooked perfectly. Fries came with a spicy aioli and that was delicious! Onsite option for parking is valet which is $10 with validation. Or you can do street parking which is metered. Overall, views are obviously beautiful and food wasn't terrible but they are on the pricier side and I feel there are better options for brunch for similar pricing. read more

We came here around sunset and sat in the upper part of the bar area. We had a reservation, but it's hard to get a reservation for the downstairs area by the tree. Overall 3.5 stars because of the pasta. We ordered a couple drinks. They tasted great and we ordered about half the dinner menu. The underwhelming dish was the pasta. Definitely not worth the price or the flavor. The Spanish octopus was delicious. And the fried eggplant was also delicious. Service is great no issues with that. Very nice people! read more

This is my second time visiting Hau Tree. We came here for Father's Day brunch as we were able to grab a last minute reservation since our usual spots were already booked! Parking - metered/free on Kalakaua depending on time and day. Valet is available but it's $10 (WITH validation) + tip (!!) . Otherwise I think it's $10/hour? Res was set for 9:15, we arrived around 9:08 and were seated around 9:20 am. Service was friendly. Food was good. Very pricey. We ordered: Calamansi ricotta pancakes House cured salmon board Two eggs any style (with bacon and Portuguese sausage, also swapped out the potatoes for sourdough toast) Avocado toast + soft boiled egg Kona French press coffee for 2 people was $16. Kind of disappointing, wasn't that strong for Kona coffee. Next time around I'd go for regular coffee which goes for $7. Pancakes were okay, a lil bit dry but the calamansi sauce saved it! Salmon board was alright, probably wouldn't order again. Basically as pictured. Avocado toast was $22 (+ $3 soft boiled egg upcharge) and was a lot smaller than expected but was enjoyed by my dad. He says there was a citrus flavor atop, and appreciated the soft boiled egg. We ordered x3 two eggs any style. We were able to sub the potatoes for toast by request with no upcharge. Ordered eggs both over easy and over medium and they were both cooked perfectly! Portuguese sausage was good, bacon was thick cut. The views were nice and actually on the beach (as compared to some other brunch spots). Lanai seating is covered by an awning above, but the hotel provides shade from the morning sun. Nice breeze kept it cool! Overall, the food was enjoyed but I'd have to say it's on the pricier side for what you get. If you're wanting a nice oceanfront view in Waikiki and willing to spend some money, definitely check out Hau Tree! read more
