Unless you buy from the store go ahead and shop here. Never order shoes from here since if you have to exchange them it will cost about the same as some of the shoes. My son wears a size 3 and Michelson size fit him way too small. The shoe was $65 with taxes. I paid about $60 in shipping cost just to exchange for a bigger size. I know they run small because I just bought him Nikes and he still a size 3 in them. I don't know why they are in the business of shipping since they won't take a hit for one of the shipping charges. They said because, "we are not a chain and just a small mom and pop." Well, if you going to advertise like that don't sell online since you will probably have screwed other customers. I took the hit first time I placed the order of $20 for shipping, I said oh well I like the shoes but for them to have their shoes run small was very upsetting and had no choice but to exchange. Never will order from here again. I understand around $10 but $20, they just taking advantage of the customers. Oh in the returned I got a $1 off for shipping, big savings. Great experience at Michelsons shoes. We took our 13 month old there for her first pair of walking shoes. The staff was friendly and patient with our baby. Measured her feet quickly, and had us try a pair- then have the baby take some steps. He then suggested a different pair- that would be lighter and more flexible. We wanted to make sure her first shoes fit her well for walking- we didn't want to take a chance measuring at home and buying online. We got more than what we were looking for and will be going back for her next shoes too! read more

I was a customer at the store in the late afternoon on Monday, December 5, around 4:00 p.m. and was greeted and assisted by an employee. I was made to feel that I did not have agency as a consumer during this experience and comments were made to me that were incredibly offensive and inappropriate. I explained to him that I had a knee replacement six months ago and was looking for shoes for work and shoes to wear with a dress or skirt. I asked about different "slip on" styles, and was repeatedly told "no" because they would not be a good option because I needed to have something that would hold my foot more securely, as my feet are now different sizes since the surgery. I did not appreciate his questioning my desire to try on different styles, always asking me "why?" each time I made a suggestion. I was repeatedly reminded that I needed to think about comfort and support over style now that I had the knee surgery.  The most upsetting comment that was made was when he said that I was "Not a little girl - you're a big girl and need supportive shoes, like I'm a big guy. Too much pressure on the knees as a big girl." I am astounded that an established business such as Michelson's allows this type of behavior from their employees. I left the store after purchasing my shoes, and did not ask to speak to management at that moment because I was offended and upset. I sat in my car and cried - how awful is that - I'm buying shoes and a criticism of my taste, style and size was not what I expected as part of the experience. I will not be returning. I sent an email on Monday 12/5 and have had no response - which tells me all I need to know. read more

Small business = great service! Having grownup in Lexington, Michaelson's was a fixture and they still are today! The reason why? Great service, attentive to getting kids, and adults, the right footwear, and did I say great service? The are happy to measure foot size manually, rather than you standing on some sort of "sizer" at other stores This recent example is based on a pair of boots we purchased for our daughter and the inside liner wore way prematurely, we went to them asking if there was a replacement liner or some sort of repair available. They took a look and then offered a replacement, even though purchased in the prior season. It was at their discretion to do this and we were pleasantly surprised. Thanks again! read more

Michelson's has been my go to store for quality shoes and service for over 15 years, but recently the staff have been less and less helpful. Today the sales person was visibly angry that the first group of sneakers (2 pairs) were not the right size and that she would have to go get a smaller size. I actually felt guilty confirming to her that yes, we really did need the smaller size. I had the distinct impression she wanted me to buy the wrong size to save her having to make another trip. Been coming here for years. The servicepeople vary, some are very nice and patient, and others seem peeved when I ask to try on other sizes and styles. I know it can be annoying, but it is their job. My biggest disappointment has been that the styles seem very static from year to year. Would love to see them mix it up a bit. An old-school shoe store staffed by actual grown men who know their stock and know how to properly fit children and adults for shoes. We took my daughter there to get some sneakers -- we hadn't been in the door 5 seconds before a young man offered to help us. A paragon of patience, he spent a good 15 or 20 minutes with us before a decision was reached. He was honest to a fault: "Hmmm, those Merrills tend to run a little narrow. They won't fit your daughter's feet." "These shoes aren't as roomy -- your daughter will outgrow them too soon." And so on. We walked out with a $48 pair of pink Stride Rites. They carry great name brands: Merrill, Sperry, Rockport, Converse. You can't beat the level of service. Highly recommended! read more

I went in here with a friend and she was the one who wanted to buy sperry's (I just accompanied her). When we first went in, within a few seconds, an employee asked us for her. At first, we declined offer and walked around to look some more. Finally, we saw the sperry's that she liked and she asked for assistance. Soon afterwards, an old man came to our help, sat her down and brought 2 pairs of shoes (one size that she requested and one 1/2 a size larger, without her asking too!). The man was extremely nice as he helped her with her shoes while chatting with us (even me, although I'm not a customer!). Finally, the shoe was on, and the pair fit perfectly. However, she was a bit hesitant to buy it because she wasn't sure how the shoe style would match her feet. With the request of my friend, the employee patiently brought up another style for her. He would give her advices and suggestions as to which shoe she should get. Finally, she decided to buy the first pair and he happily packed everything and rung her up! The service was so nice that I now look into the store everytime I walk by, and I'm waiting for the moment I need new shoes b/c I now know where I should get them! read more

I'm quite hesitant to admit this, but I worked a full summer in the bowels of this place - a long time ago - primarily moving shoes around from one place to another and generally doing as I was told. It paid great for a high school job. More importantly, I can vouch for the owners of this family-run business (it's still run by the Michaelsons). Really genuinely great people, extraordinary service, absurdly knowledgeable about their stock and most importantly, how your feet will fit into said merchandise. Sorry for breaking the cycle of 5-star reviews, but I'm not so impressed by Michelson's. I dragged my hubby all the way over here because I thought it was THE place he would find decent boots and stop walking around multiple feet of snow in canvas sneakers. It took about 30 seconds before I knew that dream was dead. The salespeople were very aggressive, and basically wouldn't let us move without trying to assist us. Sometimes when you're browsing you just want to browse. The selection was disappointingly small and ugly. I understand that this is an old timey full-service kind of place, but if you don't walk out with nice shoes then who cares if you went to Micheson's or DSW? If you're looking for Uggs, clogs, or Merrills, head right down to this shop and I'm sure you will have a great time. I think I'll stick with J. L. Coombs, though, thanks. read more

I don't think I've ever had such a good shoe shopping experience as I did at Michelson's. Being from Boston, I'm used to popping into an overcrowded shoe store with two employees, trying desperately to find my size (I usually don't because my feet are rather small), and having no luck finding my size in the back room. Michelson's was fairly crowded for a small town shoe store on a Monday afternoon, but they had a lot of employees to handle the crowd. All of them were helping other customers when I walked in, so I started browsing. I found a pair of Sperry Top-Siders that I'd been wanting for ages but could never find in my size online or in other stores. Also, they were $25 cheaper than any place else I'd looked. The moment I had a shoe in hand an employee came over to me and asked if he could help. I asked for the shoe in my size and he asked me to have a seat. He quickly returned with three boxes and measured my feet just to make sure I had the right size (I'm glad I got a pedicure right before coming in!). My initial size fit perfectly and he had me rung up in a matter of minutes. Michelson's has great service and prices. The only thing that seems to be lacking is variety (a lot of neutral colored flats in the women's section), but I spied some other cute shoes and will definitely be back again. read more

After trying for a month to find shoes online for my 12 month old new walker, I decided to take him in for a proper fitting. We take covid precautions very seriously, and my son does not interact with strangers or go to stores very often as he is too young for a mask. As soon as the gentleman started to measure my sons foot, he became inconsolable. The gentleman was extremely patient and made sure that my son was properly fitted with the right shoe. As a mom, I was grateful for his assurance that this happens from time to time. My son finally has shoes that fit - he ended up being a wonky extra wide size - and can now run around outside. read more

People there are good about choosing the right size for growing feet, and the shoes they offer tend to last longer than shoes I have gotten elsewhere. I went in n here because I heard they take time and give good customer service. Wrong. I told the person helping me that I had trouble fitting shoes. I have long toes and had a hip replacement at the beginning of the year and wanted a carefully fitted shoe.he measured the length, but not the width or the arch. He tried to foist $90 New Balance on me for $135, pretty much the same shoe I came in with that were giving me problems. I went to the New Balance store. They did a complete sizing and recommended a different model that have worked wonders. read more

I had high hopes for them as I was looking for a 'full service' shoe store to help fit my toddler that wasn't Stride Rite. Unfortunately the man who helped us was horribly rude. He treated me like an imbecile and I apparently had never made a correct decision regarding her shoes ever. He did seem to know what he was doing and I bought a pair of shoes. I think I was in shock at the time from such egregious manners. Also I have trouble being confrontational when I'm with my cheerful little girl. I went to buy shoes for my 2-year old (not an easy task for anyone), but the sales person, Jerry, was a real professional and made the experience very enjoyable for everyone. I didn't have to do anything but sit back and watch him entertain and talk to my 2-year old son and get him excited about getting his foot measured and try on the new shoes... he worked some kind of magic on him and my son had fun and no tears were shed. It is amazing to still find a place like this nowadays, where the sales people give you individual attention and know how to handle kids. Even places that are geared towards kids, like Stride Rite, do not have this level of sales person or nearly as good customer service as Michelson's, but the prices are the same. I am ONLY going to buy my kids shoes here from now on. read more

Your salesman recommended that we buy sneakers for our 4 year old grandson that has a knob that you turn that moves strings to tighten or loosen the fit rather than just Velcro. When I said we preferred to get the regular sneaker with Velcro he wouldn't just get us what we wanted. We had a verbal battle. I noticed that you have a lot of reviews that show customers that had poor customer service experiences. Why don't you do something about this!! read more

Was there today. One of the salesman was not accommodative or cordial to me. Therefore I requested another salesman and stated that he did not have patience. He became completely outraged and yelled at me and said "I don't want to work with you. You are rude!" I was very shocked that he was so angry that he shoved the box on the floor, jumped up and walked away saying "I did not have a problem with you before." He said this because he assisted me during last visit. During that visit I asked if they honor a military discount and his was response was "absolutely not." I then was surprised at his answer. I expected him to say" sorry we don't." The three stars are for him and not anyone else in that store. Because everyone else is very nice, polite, and accomodating. read more

No matter how busy they are, when you walk in a salesman will magically appear from out of nowhere, and sit you down for that old-school fitting and small-town chit-chat that have all but disappeared from Main Street America. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I came into this store with my mom and son, hoping to get some Stride Rite walking shoes for my 8 month old. I'd called before coming and was told they had a "variety" of walking shoes for infants. Upon our arrival, a shopper in the store looked at us as if we didn't belong, right along with the older woman who was helping her. Not once were we greeted, or asked if we needed help finding anything, but all eyes were on us as we scanned the wall looking for the shoes we wanted. There were two men in the store as well, and neither of them greeted us either. We saw a similar shoe to the one we were looking for, but because we felt unwelcome, uncomfortable and WATCHED, we decided to leave without purchasing anything. I would never spend my money in a business that makes me nor my family feel the way we felt today. And in case anyone was wondering; yes. We are BLACK! After driving over 40 minutes to come here, a simple "hello, how are you?" Would've made a huge difference. I don't recommend this store to anyone who doesn't "look" like they "belong" in this community. read more

I found this place during an obsessive hunt for a specific pair of Merrill's. A nostalgic, full service shoe store. The gentlemen who work here are sweet, but sometimes grumpy. They are patient with kids though and really want them to get a good fit. The shoes are full price, but they have a nice selection (I got my Merrill's!). They carry Stride Rite, Merrill, cute animal rainwear, Men's/Women's shoes etc. There's a parking lot in the back with meters. read more

I sold shoes on Newbury street as a college student, so I am a self professed "shoe snob." This place has it all--service, style, comfort, structure, quality and conscience. They will only sell you what you need and what is right for your foot. Prices are fair, selection is excellent, quality is unmatched and kindness is overflowing. Whether you are a new mom with a toddler or a person with a disability (requiring modification for bracing) they will make it happen. If you are an elder or a person with mobility problems, just call ahead and the owner, Dick Michelson or his son Eric and they will fit you in your van or car outside at the back of the store. Michelsons has arranged for reserved HP parking. I had a very uncomfortable experience in this store. I was a first time customer and it will definitely be a one time experience for me. The employees of this store take customer service to the extreme, to a point where it crosses over a line and is not helpful, but overbearing and suffocating. If you ask someone if they need/want help, and they politely decline, listen to them. Don't force your unwanted "help" on them because it will only escalate the situation. I would also like to highlight the incredibly rude older woman who asked me if I wanted to wear peds while trying on flip flops, to which I politely declined because who wears peds with flip flops? How will that give me an accurate feeling on how I would normally wear the shoe? Her response was: "oh yes you are." Like she was my grandmother scolding me? Terrible, awful experience. I would never go back and if you are a normal adult who knows how to select your own shoes, I'll save you the trouble and recommend you hit up DSW instead. read more

My daughter was captivated by his attention to fitting her needs and allowed her to run throughout the store testing them out. I went in today looking for a specific model of a Minnetonka moccasin. A elderly salesperson approached me and asked me if I needed some help. I told him I was looking for a specific model and didn't see it on display. He responded if you don't see it we don't have it. I asked him if i could try on a pair to see how they fit and I would order directly from Minnetonka. He said abruptly that they all fit differently! This person made me feel unwanted in his store and didn't want any future business I could give them. I also have grayish hair! His rude and abrupt style did not meet with my approval. We bought shoes a few months ago. They were worn a few times and caused severe blisters, requiring treatment by a physician. Today we tried to return or exchange the shoes because they are unsuitable. When they were purchased, they were recommended by the salesperson. Today, one of the owners of the store was unwilling to exchange them or give us a store credit. His response was basically, "oh well, tough luck". And then he asked if he could sell us another pair of shoes. I am very disappointed by the lack of customer service. I would never recommend this store. Horrible place. read more

I was very impressed by how John treated my shoe plight. I had spilt olive oil on my light grey boots while cooking making a sort of "polka dot" pattern on just the left side. I googled and tried homemade ways of removing the oil with no success. I remembered Michelson's and thought that they might have something that could help me. John suggested the Neatsfoot Oil and helped me to see it's results. I'm telling you this stuff works like a charm - you couldn't even tell the oil spill happened and it slightly darkened my boot in the front making it a lot cooler looking :-) read more
