It took me far too long to visit Michi Ramen given my love for ramen and the constant praise from my friends. Unlike its primary competition, Ramen Tatsu-ya, Michi Ramen allows for broth customization at three different levels: light, regular, and stout. As delicious as Ramen Tatsu-ya is, that broth really messes with my stomach. Fortunately, the Michi Ramen "regular" broth (and by corollary the "light") is delicious and gastrointestinal-distress-free! Despite coming during dinner time on a Saturday, we managed to snag a seat at the bar immediately upon arrival. Service was extremely prompt and informative for both the food and drinks. The only downside to our location was the proximity from the to-go register/counter but I guess we had some interesting conversations with waiting patrons. I got the Michi (Shoyu Tonkotsu) Ramen with the regular broth and spicy add-on (really not that spicy). I've always been somewhat annoyed by the price of add-ons at ramen restaurants but I guess that's just how it works (seriously $0.50 for flavored oil?). Aside from what could be considered a meager serving of the Chasu Pork, the ramen was fantastic. There were plenty of noodles to fill me up and the broth was delicious. Quite impressive. Given a choice between here and Ramen Tatsu-ya, I think I now prefer Michi Ramen. There's more seating, the broth isn't quite as intense, and there isn't an hour-long line. read more

Wow, this ramen was fantastic. The broth had great, rich flavor. The ingredients were fantastically balanced. We had 3 of the 5 ramen (Sapporo- which was stellar, Jungle (a tad heavy), and Veggie). In fact, it was so good that the poor service and the weird70's punk rock music redux did not affect the experience too much. After eating ramen in Tokyo it has been very hard for me to eat ramen in the states- you might call me a ramen snob now. The ramen here is okay for my taste buds. There were 5 of us and there were some hits and there were some misses. My gf did NOT like her vegetable ramen. So much so that she stopped eating it after her second bite. One friend thoroughly enjoyed his. The rest of us thought it was just okay. I wanted mine extra spicy and requested for more thai chili. Absolutely loved this ramen place! Came here with a friend on a friday night, and everything about this place was excellent. There was a small wait, about 5-10 minutes, but it wasn't a huge problem. I ordered the tsukemen (dipping noodles), while my friend got a shoyu tonkotsu ramen. We both heartily enjoyed our meals. I got their house spicy garlic oil, which was top notch. The garlic was crispy and added a nice little crunch, which worked really well when mixed throughout the noodles. The broth (fish tonkotsu) was flavorful and not too thick. Alright, Michi Ramen, you clever bastards - you win. I liked my giant bowl of ramen and all that came along with it. I liked the rauchbier you had on special. I liked the marinated hard-boiled eggs. I liked the tasty pork cutlets and the skillfully prepared broth and noodles. Everything about the ramen I sampled made me want more. I even dug the mochi for dessert - a Japanese treat that I've hated with a passion previously due to what was likely a bad example of the dish. But that's your game, wasn't it? I ordered the dipping broth (yum) it was a very thick broth with pieces of ground meat. Biffy ordered the meat lovers, which I thought was just okay (compared to the dipping noodles). Their noodles are chewy like classic ramen noodles, unlike many others restaurants that offer store bought softer noodles. Staff is awesome and very informative. WOW! We've been on a ramen kick lately, and Michi was next on our list. I am in love with this place's ramen. We both had the regular "Michi" which is the more traditional Shoyu Tonkotsu and added the Ajitama. I went an extra step and added the bamboo (Menma) and fishcake (Kamoboko), which did not disappoint. The egg was marinated in the nectar of the gods and was perfectly soft boiled. The Kamaboko was on the list of the best I've had, not too hard or rubbery, but just the right texture. The hearty broth sat happily in my belly on a chilly fall afternoon. They deserve four stars even though ramen fatigue has set in and I really only felt like 3.5 stars...it's *good* ramen and won't disappoint, so let's keep it at four stars. Delicious and filling? Yes! I had the Meat Lover's bowl with "stout" broth (+$1), and it was awesome. The stout broth was creamy (tonkotsu) and definitely changed the ramen taste and texture. The additional pork slices that differential the Meat Lover's from the standard Michi are probably worth the extra $2, but perhaps a stout broth Michi bowl would be equally as awesome. I did have the Michi bowl once a few years ago, and the roasted nori (seaweed) was kind of a tasteless distraction...so the lack of nori in the Meat Lover's bowl was a bonus. The ramen noodles were well-textured--definitely cooked well and not soggy. The bowl could have used some more noodles though! Michi Ramen does sell additional noodles for the "lonely broth" problem for an extra $2. I'd be interested in trying the Texas BBQ, Jungle, and Veggie bowls next. Location is easy spotted since it has a sign right on the main road. Should have a problem spotting it. Big issue with this place can be the parking. They have a private lot, but it can be pretty crowded here sometimes, and it could mean that the private lot is full and you will need to find parking elsewhere. There is a waiting area inside the restaurant as well as an outdoor waiting area. The outdoors area can be heated in the cold weather, so it's not so bad even if you have to step outside to wait. Obviously, this place can be pretty popular so a wait when you show up shouldn't be a surprise especially during peak dinner hours. Bathroom is fine, no complaints. The inside of the space is dimly lit (not in a bad way though). Most of the tables seat 4 people, though slightly bigger parties should be no problem. The servers are pretty chill. No complaints about the service. In general the food here is pretty solid. The ramen bowls are good. I particularly like the Meat Lovers, especially if craving more protein for the mean. If you don't feel that hungry you can get some of the appetizers (recommend the Chashu Don - pretty solid portions). I also like that this place is opened pretty late. If craving a little later in the evening meal, this is a very viable option (parking may be better at this time too). Definitely a good place to come! read more

I've been here few times now but it's never been such a spectacular experience that I would give them 5 stars. Not a fan of the atmosphere there. It does feel like it's a Japanese ramen place but it's really dark in there even coming during the middle of the day. Makes it hard to take any pictures and difficult to see the person right in front of you well. Service is average. There was one time when me and my friends came here for dinner and I don't know if it was a rare occurrence but we had to wait for our order for at least 30 minutes. The waiter offered us one free mochi for each person which was nice but I wish they would've updated us or told us that the food was going to take that long before we ordered. But I'm assuming that doesn't happen often. The ramen was pretty decent. There are definitely better ones in Austin but still a solid ramen. The broth is pretty thick even when you do get the regular which I don't mind. I don't come here more often because it is a little overpriced for the ramen you get. No gooey runny egg here, just beautiful and tasty. As a vegetarian, I like that they offer two types of veggie broth; shoyu and miso shiitake every day. I prefer Michi over the other well known places in Austin, not just because the food is better, but you don't feel rushed and can enjoy a conversation. You are treated as a person and not as a number. It may not be a first date place since you will be chowing down on noodles and there is just no graceful way. For dessert, try their variety of mochi flavors! A bonus is they also offer a full bar. Michi is usually very busy on weekends or when the weather calls for a hot bowl of soup. The atmosphere is nice, relaxed, dimly lit except for those tables directly under the lighting - the bulbs could stand to go down in wattage. The ramen was a really huge serving, didn't need the extra noodles. Their vegetable tempura is done really well and not too greasy (on the standards for something deep fried). For the price you pay, you really get a lot. It was almost too much meat for me. The broth was heavy (Miso Tonkatsu - Stout), but the flavor is good. I really appreciate the efficiency of paying the check. They really have their system down. The mochi flavor varieties are good. A year and a half later, I have made my second visit because one of my friends kept debating with me on who makes the best ramen in Austin. I said, "Fine, I'll give it another try." Personally, I am not a huge fan of the broth. It does not give me the same wholesome feeling that I get from eating Ramen Tatsu-Ya's ramen. Also, it leaves me with this greasy or fatty residue feeling on my lips... It was hard for me to finish, but as a poor college student, I can't bear to waste my food! This is a really good ramen place. Unfortunately they do not have gluten free noodles but they are gluten friendly and I had a broth/rice bowl. My boyfriend got the regular broth, michi style. Although it was salty, there was the silky, savory, beefy/porkiness that I loved about it. It was warm & comforting but also was refreshing. Given all of that, the broth in the beginning is super tasty. Really the highlight of the soup. The meat portion they offer is also extremely generous. My boyfriend and I got 4 slices a pork in each of our bowls. If you have an aversion to salt, the rice bowl might be a good choice for you. The rice in my bowl definitely absorbed a lot of the broth and was tasty with all the toppings. There are a ton of different combos your could get and I opted for the pork, some veggies and cilantro. The helpings are definitely generous, at least for a woman they were. Considering our bowls were less than $9, I would consider this a really good deal. Michi has a very flavorful broth. I tried the Michi and my wife had the Osaka; both were good, but I recommend the Osaka, it was definitely better. We both went for the hot spice (I know, I've had plenty of ramen in Japan, but this was texas...) The hot spices are way too hot and overpowered the broth, which is somewhat of a crime. As much Ramen as I ate in college, I had never been to a Ramen restaurant until taking in an extended family dinner here recently. I somewhat blindly ordered the Sapporro and told them to pour a whole dish of their house-made hot chili sauce into it. Yes, a whole dish. Others at the table all shared a dish of the spicy sauce and took maybe a spoonful at a time. I ordered mine "stout" meaning extra thick, heavy broth. Glad I did so, would certainly go that route again even if maybe it was unhealthier. Anyway, the Ramen was very filling and hearty. I finished my bowl to the last drop. Most others at the table finished half--if that--of their bowls. Well, I know this is TMI, but even though I didn't think that spicy chili sauce was that spicy to eat, I was in for a world of hurt for the 24 hours following the meal. When given the chance to go to Austin during my sister's Baylor orientation, I was left with two choices for lunch: Michi Ramen or Tatsu-ya Ramen. Sadly, I heard Tatsu-ya only had a limited menu during lunch, so I opted for Michi to test it out. My expectations were high, as I heard many, many good things about this place. My boyfriend, daughter, and I first started out with their dumplings and the fried chicken. The fried chicken was huge! Much bigger than we had expected, but still so so good. However, we tried to not munch it all down, or else we would have room for the ramen. I got the Sapporo, while he got the Meat Lover's. Both were topped with a lot of toppings, and we both got an egg to add on. My broth was a bit salty, I'm sad to say, but I thoroughly enjoyed the noodles and toppings. This is my second time at Michi Ramen, and I will say that this restaurant did not fail to disappoint! When we arrived, we put our name on the list and had to wait about 40 minutes. Really, it's no big deal, but all the food from the kitchen smelled so amazing and I just really wanted to eat! Once we were seated, the server was extremely friendly and helpful. He explained to me all the vegetarian options and was able to help me decide what I wanted to eat. In addition, he was very prompt about refilling our water (highly necessary because the chili sauce was getting spicier and spicier). All in all, service was very enjoyable, and made the whole eating experience that much better. PARKING: (4/5) Both times I've come, I was able to find parking in the private lot adjacent to Michi. However, it is kind of cramped, and I can imagine not being able to find a spot during really busy hours. Luckily, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, you can park in the parking lot on the other side of the restaurant. COME AGAIN?: YESYESYES. Absolutely. Found this place at random yesterday and decided to stop in. Had the veggie ramen + mashed potato covered in panko breadcrumb appetizer. The ramen had an excessive amount of green onions (like 20% of the entire dish was green onion) but still tasted very good. The appetizer was outstanding and unlike anything I'd had before. The atmosphere was sleek, minimalist, and dark...just what you'd expect from a Japanese place. I'm deducting a star from my rating bc at the end of the meal I accidentally asked the hostess for my bill, mistaking her for my waitress (both were wearing striped shirts, my bad). The hostess was obviously annoyed by my confusion, as evidenced by the bitchy tone in her voice when she said she'd grab my server to take care of that for me. Came here for lunch and waited over 30 mins for my ramen to come out. I ordered the michi ramen and burnt pork belly tips, which was tasty, sort of like Vietnamese thit kho or caramel pork. Was a bit disappointed with the ramen - I got the extra stout broth, but it wasn't flavorful enough for me. I had to add a couple sprinkles of salt. There was one slice of pork belly, you usually get two at other shops. It was an okay experience. Wait staff/bar was cool- they have a lot of beers on tap. I was surprised that this place doesn't have better reviews. I can't speak for the meat based ramen but I thought the veggie ramen was delicious! I had the miso broth and added tofu skin, black garlic, and chili oil. I consider myself a ramen lover and I have tried almost every ramen restaurant in the Austin area and I rank this place in my top 2. Michi Ramen is so good. Me and my fiancé happened to find this place near our apartment and went in one day. Well that was about six months ago and we've spent probably way too much money here, but it's for good reason. Everything Michi Ramen serves is absolutely amazing. Prior to this my only experience with ramen were those crappy little microwave ramen packets you get from HEB. Just forget all your microwave ramen experiences, because no, this is actual FOOD. I usually get the Jungle mix with stout broth (very rich) and I add a bunch of stuff to it. You can customize the hell out of your ramen bowl to get exactly what you want, and the staff are more than willing to help you out and tell you about the menu's options. After ordering your bowl is usually out to your table in literally fiveish minutes. The place has a very pleasant and relaxing environment and it does not get too noisy even when it's busy. You can either be seated at a table or sit at the bar and enjoy your ramen with some beers. A++++ read more
