As someone from Texas it's been difficult finding places here that can compete but we definitely found one! This place is authentic and you can't tell the chef puts everything into his food. This is the type of place you want to go. Do not go for the typical standard appetizers make sure you order the specials or anything off the menu that is made all by him and the cooks. My server took my order for a small hot sake, but when it came it wasn't hot; just lukewarm. And in the smallest "small sake" carafe I've ever seen. The edamame were fine. The gyoza were hot and properly pot-stuck instead of being deep-fried, but were still noticeably oily. Moving to the nigiri, the tobiko (flying fish roe) was dry and failed to transmit that salty bite I was anticipating. And the ebi were just shrimp on top of rice; no smear of wasabi that most places include. Sure, there was wasabi on the side, but it's not the same. The decor was traditional yet modern, and the soft lighting created a cozy and intimate setting. But the real star of the show was the food. The spicy miso katsu ramen was out of this world. Authentic Japanese place, I saw some other Japanese people eating her too when I sat down. I got salmon with rice which was crispy and not dry. I enjoyed it overall. I saw other things on the menu other "Japanese" esque places may not offer so if your wanting to try something besides just California rolls this might be a good place to try out. They can be a bit pricey, but they're always delicious, and there's many items you won't likely find at other places. If you've never been and don't know what to get, I think the katsu curry is a safe bet! I usually get the curry soba or ramen + a special or sushi as an appetizer. I really like the grilled squid, eggplant nanban, futomaki roll, and mussels (I don't recall the exact special names, and naturally the list of specials varies a bit, though being so long, it is fairly consistent). The service has always been good from my experiences. It's not a big place, but the atmosphere is nice, and it's usually not overly busy. We visited as a family of 9 for the first time based on some friends' recommendations and are thoroughly disappointed, especially since we had family from out of town. The service was definitely less than par, closer to a 1-2 out of 5. The restaurant was only a quarter full with lots of empty tables when we arrived. They were unwilling to move the tables together and said we could only be seated together if we were in their private room and said it would cost us an additional $30. We should've clued in at that point and left but made the mistake of staying. The room was in the back of the restaurant across from the bathrooms and was very small. They also gave us 2 menus to share for our entire group. Definitely don't recommend this place if you have more than 4 people in your group!!! The food was ok (3 out of 5). Took a long time to be served and the flavor was average. Although we ordered individual rolls, they served it all on one single platter... Which normally wouldn't be a problem except that the private room they put us in was so long and narrow, that it made it difficult to share off of one plate. We will not be coming back. We both got orders of the Katsu Curry- the sauce was packaged separately to make sure the breading/rice didn't get soggy it's quite literally some of the best curry you'll have in your entire life. We also got a double order of their delicious gyoza and topped it off with a side of the soft shell crab tempura. Hiro is the best sushi chef in Lexington and this has been true for over 20 years. He was at Tomo for most of the time it was open until he opened Michikusa. His sushi is PERFECT, as is the sashimi and noodle bowls. You just can't go wrong at this place. It's a hidden gem off of Richmond Road. Food quality is wonderful, we had Tonkatsu- be prepared to use chop sticks! They made an exception because all five of us wanted it ( they had run out ) and although it took a bit it was excellent. Update: After a few visits, I'm lowering my rating to three stars and by that I mean, "It's just okay." Not only has the service not gotten better, it may actually be worse. And it seems that the quality of the fish is going downhill too. Everything was so mediocre tonight that I am pretty sure we will never bother going back. Original review: The salmon nigiri absolutely melts in your mouth and you can tell that that fish is very fresh. We loved the quiet decor of the restaurant. Once the weather gets a little cooler, I look forward to trying their ramen. Price-wise, it is probably on average for Lexington, which means it is a little expensive. Nigiri is around $3 per piece, which is high (usually, nigiri is sold in pairs, but not here). This would have been a five-star review, but they are obviously still working out issues with service. We were sitting at the sushi bar, but rather than letting us fill out the paper menu that most sushi bars use that we can just hand to the sushi chef, they insist that you give your order to a server. So literally, the two guys working behind the sushi bar were just standing there with nothing to do, we wanted to place an order for sushi, and the server was nowhere to be found (when the restaurant was mostly empty). We couldn't order food and the chefs couldn't make us food and we all just sat there and stared at each other until the server FINALLY stumbled by and said, "So, did you guys want to order anything?" (Note to manager - fire that guy and hire a proper server, please). Overall, we really liked this restaurant and plan to return often. Constantly seeking the best Japanese food in Lex and we found it here at Michikusa which just opened in June. Located off the beaten path in a small shopping complex off Codell Drive, it's super easy to miss! It's in the same parking lot as Ayame Market. For apps we tried the Mozuku Seaweed which was refreshing and delicious, and the soft shell crab tempura. For our meal, we ordered tuna and spicy tuna rolls, both generous portions for the price. The best was the hamachikama. Seriously the best we've had ever...even in Hawaii! Our daughter had the chicken teriyaki plate which came with miso soup, Japanese style mac salad (just like my grandma made with cucumber), a green salad, and bowl of rice. This is the most authentic Japanese food we've had in Lex to date. The restaurant is clean and spotless with a simple, modern decor. The server and hostess were attentive and constantly checked on how we were doing. Much care is taken in every aspect of the business. It's evident the owners are meticulous about the quality and authenticity of the food as well as the ambiance of their restaurant. The menu is authentic with high quality sushi and izakaya-style selections. I shared the tempura dinner with my son and it's the best tempura I've had in the US, perfectly cooked and crispy, no grease. My portion size comment is because one roll in particular (I don't recall the name) was small but then again, they could've packed a lot of rice into it to make it bigger and didn't.
