One of the worst things when moving is finding a new mechanic. My car clearly had an exhaust issue--thing was loud as hell when on the highway--so gave Mickey's a call after doing some research of places nearby. Gentleman I spoke to was polite and clear about the best time to bring the car in. Discovered some adjacent issues which they clearly highlighted in their inspection report (including pics) which I may fix another time, but otherwise mostly stuck to why I brought the car in. There was no problem or huffing and puffing around this, unlike other places I've been to in the past. Pricing was reasonable and they were honest about what everything should cost. Got everything done quicker than normal too. Definitely will use them again once my bucket of bolts gets screwed up again, as they were a pleasure to work with. read more

I first found Mickey's Automotive when my 2002 standard-shift Toyota Echo just stopped moving more than 25 MPH on Rte 117 one day, making a terrible noise for no discernible reason. I searched on "foreign car service" because I found no Toyota service garages in the Tarrytown area. I called. I believe Mickey himself answered the phone and promised to send the tow-truck as soon as it returned to the garage. But after about 30 minutes, Mickey himself turned up at the top of the hill I had reached, looked into the hood, showed me the power steering belt that had slipped off its pulleys, and suggested I follow him to the garage since the tow-truck was still out. He went very slowly to make sure I had no problems. He ordered an emergency delivery of the belts needed, and his mechanics replaced them without delay. I kept him and his garage in mind for 5 years, when the Toyota dealer service near my job lost interest in my car. Since then Mickey, Dan at the front desk, and the guys in the garage have performed every inspection, swapped my snow tires in and out, balanced the wheels, replaced the clutch, brake pads, and cleaned the brake drums, replaced radiator hoses and windshield wiper blades, front and rear ball bearings, flushed the brake system, replaced the cabin air filter... you get the drift. Dan tells me how much each part is going to cost and cost for labor, we discuss what I can afford and when. They take photos of any problems they see and send them by text, so I know what they are talking about, and the charges always come in as estimated, once or twice a bit less! And the car drives like new! Actually, there's not a lot left to do except maintenance, which they will continue to do for this car until gasoline is no longer available and I can't drive it any more. P.S. Yelp thinks I live in San Francisco. Don't know how this happened. I live in New York City, and I commute by train to Mickey's Automotive when I need to leave my car overnight. read more

Let me tell you how kind and honest these guys are. My son's vehicle engine stopped working and needs to be replaced one month after the purchase. Instead of giving me the run around, a staff member spent the time explaining all my options and advising me to contact the National number for the manufacturer. He explained terminology and it turns out it is covered by the warranty. This is saving us $10k or more dollars. Please consider taking your vehicle to them for the kindness and honesty. Car went to a true dealer alternative: turbo and timing belt are fine. Oil leak located. $212 to Mickey's for a misdiagnosis. I've been coming to Mickey's since 2013 for all my CRV tune-ups, but an experience late last year really made me question my loyalty. I had punctured a tire in NYC and had driven up to Westchester with my spare in hopes that they would be able to do a quick repair for me. Everything was going fine, and the mechanic had managed to repair the tire, but then the receptionist calls me to the garage and tells me that all my tires had to be repaired because of 'dry rot'. My tires weren't old, but my car had been sitting parked in a friend's driveway for a few months without being driven, so that's probably what caused it. I asked her if I could delay the repair and she told me that she could not recommend for or against the repair because it was a safety issue and they didn't want to take responsibility - fine. So I asked her if they would be able to do it then and there, and she said that they didn't have the tires available but she could call her boss and see if he could pick up the tires. When she got off the phone, she gave me some quote that made me balk. I did a quick check of local tire shops and called for estimates because I've gotten my tires replaced before and had an idea of price ranges. What I'd been offered seemed a little too high. A place down the street in Elmsford told me they would change all four tires for me for $427 plus tax. I told the receptionist and she told me that she would call her boss and see if he could match that. This took her almost 30 minutes - I was watching the clock because the other tire shop would be closing in an hour - and when she returned and told me that her boss would match the price, I was relieved. I could get everything taken care of without leaving the garage. Well, then she rang me up and their 'matched price', and it was $596, about $150 more than what I had been quoted at the other shop! Needless to say, I told her that I would be leaving, and she said that she would have to charge me for the fixed tire. I told her that I would have appreciated her telling me that I had to change all my tires before fixing the punctured tire, and she seemed to realize the logic behind that before letting me leave without paying for the 'fixed' tire that I had to toss anyway. My 86-year-old mother needed her car inspected. It's 4 years old with 19K miles on it. Despite her age, my mother is capable of driving. After 3 days in the shop, she was charged $2,100.00. My mother was told that the car needed a new complete set of brakes and new tires. I've driven with her and she does not "ride the brake" or drive in any way that would result in excessive wear & tear on the vehicle. I've also driven the car and never found any issues. I strongly suspect that she was taken advantage of just as Clythie F reports in her review dated 10/12/2022. There are plenty of other service stations within Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, and I advise you to choose one of them. read more

In the past 18 months, I've had some very disappointing experiences at Mickey's. There is a new service manager, Dan, who it seems is determined to make this business fail. When I took my car in 2 different times for an oil change, and once for an inspection, I was told that I needed to leave my car for the entire day! The next time I took my car in for an oil change and it wasn't done in a 3 hour time frame, I told them I would pick up my car and take it Valvoline. Surprise--he had it ready in an hour!! When I questioned why he needed my car for an entire day, he got nasty and said they have a lot of cars in the shop and that I would just have to wait until they could get to mine. I'm not sure Mickey is aware of these issues but I've heard similar comments from friends who are long-time customers of Mickey's. Incidentally, I haven't seen Mickey in the shop for some time and I wonder what's going on. I think he's giving Dan way too much latitude and he is turning long time customers away with his nasty snarky attitude. Until now I've always given Mickey 5 stars. Heads up to Mickey: Don't let this joker ruin your reputation and your business. I've referred a few people to you but I don't feel I can do that anymore. About two years ago, I brought in both of my VW vehicles to Mickey's. One, a 2012 Jetta, had a problem that resulted in a check engine light. After months of leaving the vehicle in the shop for days, being told the problem was fixed, and having the CEL come on again as soon as I left with the car, the shop finally admitted it couldn't diagnose the problem, and made an appointment at the local VW DEALERSHIP, where the problem was rapidly diagnosed, and fixed for free under warranty. Mickey's did a major, unnecessary repair while bumbling around, and charged us something like $700.00 for the privilege. Mickey himself first promised a partial refund, then reneged, and failed to make good on this promise. But wait, it gets better...The other car was a 2008 Passat with the 2.0L FSI turbo engine. One of the most common failure points with these cars, known by everyone qualified to work on them, as well as people like me capable of the most rudimentary internet research, is the cam follower, which can wear down and cause damage to the cam shaft and failure of the high pressure fuel pump. I asked Mickey's to replace the cam follower at the same time as they were doing the timing belt, which I wanted done early. When I picked up the Passat, Dan at the front desk LIED TO MY FACE, and told me that the cam follower had been checked, and did not need to be replaced. I complained that this was impossible based on how little time had been spent, and Mickey eventually admitted that I had been lied to by his employee, and scheduled another appointment. They replaced the cam follower, and per my instructions, the old one was kept for me to have. It was so badly worn it had almost been broken into pieces. It was after this, by the way, that Mickey refused to offer a partial refund or do anything at all to make up for the dishonest and unprofessional behavior of his employees. Well, fast forward to a month ago (one year since my last time allowing these amateur mechanics to touch my cars). I brought my Passat to a dealership (I guess I learned my lesson) because it seemed down on power and unusually noisy. Lo and behold, the damage to my camshaft that could have been mitigated if these fools at Mickey's deigned to do their jobs, had caused irreparable damage to the camshaft, and the camshaft and high pressure fuel pump both required imminent replacement to avoid catastrophic engine failure. As a result, I was forced to dump the car prematurely and replace it, all because the people working at Mickey's couldn't be trusted to simply do their jobs. This place is a joke, and if you have a German car, or anything with quirks that is at all finicky, I recommend you bring it somewhere with stronger ethics and mechanical ability than this pathetic excuse for an automotive shop. Edited 6/17/19: How could I have forgotten these other great examples of the kind of customer service and attention to detail offered by Mickey's??? 1. The time my Passat was in the shop for the timing belt, and without asking me, they replaced my cabin air filter (and charged me for it, of course). That should have been a sign of what was yet to come. 2. The time the oil in my Passat was replaced with an oil not on the VW approved list, and my engine started consuming oil at a rate more than 500% faster than usual. 3. The time I brought my father's Audi A4 in to have a wheel bearing replaced, got an estimate, and when the car was finally ready two weeks later than expected, the price had ballooned to 30% more than the estimate, without anyone ever communicating to ask if that was acceptable, which it obviously wasn't. I'm sure if I give it time, some more nightmares will pop back into my memory. Oh, yeah... 4. The several times my Passat went into the shop during the timing belt/lying-about-before-eventually-replacing-cam-follower episode, when the sound of its own nearly failed wheel bearing went unnoticed by any of the "technicians." (I thought it was loud new winter tires, because I am not an automotive professional.) You can write that one off if you want, but the fact is that when I brought the car to a different shop for a NYS inspection, they noticed the wheel bearing was bad while bringing it from the parking lot to the lift. This, by the way, was the car that my wife had been driving, with the failing bearing, every one of the numerous days that she didn't have her Jetta, which Mickey's was busy not fixing. So I guess you can add negligence to the already impressive list of reasons to avoid this place like the plague. read more

We have recently bought a car for our teenage daughter. After a few days later a service engine light went off. Mickey diagnosed the problem and took care of the repair in a timely matter. The incentive for me to use this particular mechanic was that the first time I went there they told me that they offer free pick up and delivery. Since I work locally, this was a big draw. The prices are not the best around, but I was happy to go there for the convenience of having them pick up and drop off my car. The past two times my husband has called he was told it wasn't "worth it" to have our business since they had to pick up and drop off the car. I never had a time frame and always told them they could keep the car all day if necessary. The last time they repaired the car the repair was not done right and I asked them to redo it. Again I was told that we weren't worth it, even though it was their mistake. Sad to say we will not go back and will never recommend them again. read more

This is my first yelp post, ever. I'm compelled to write now solely to convey what I feel is a story that speaks to the core of why you should trust Mickey's with your business. This is a special proprietor. A few weeks back I brought my (new and pretty fancy) car into Mickey's for an oil change and vehicle emissions check. During the oil change there was an accident which caused my engine to seize. Needless to say, I was displeased. But I also understand fully that mistakes happen, and I've long judged people by how they address mistakes rather than stewing about something in the past. Clearly Mickey shares this philosophy. Mickey and his entire team began by each expressing apologies for the mistake. The sincerity they expressed was deeply appreciated, and helped me to feel that they were invested in ensuring all would be corrected. Equally if not more important, they owned up to the mistake and promised to ensure that everything would be rectified. Mickey's held true to their word. The car required extensive repairs, including replacing the entire engine along with significant other work. Mickey assured me that he would see it through, and he did; even when his insurance company sought to short-shrift certain items, Mickey made certain that I would not be on the hook for anything. I should also mention that the repair work was done at another shop, and Mickey could not have been a more engaged partner. Absolutely zero ego or self-interest. He stood shoulder to shoulder with me, as a strong customer advocate, focused solely on making sure that my car was fully repaired. Late last night I received my car back. The mechanic at the other shop said, in paraphrase: "I've never met Mickey personally, but that is one of the greatest business owners I've ever dealt with. He is just outstanding, on both a business and professional level." Mistakes happen. Should they occur at Mickey's, I want to serve as testament that this owner and his entire team stand behind everything they do and go to the ends to provide top-notch customer service. Mickey is among the most honorable and professional business owners I've ever met. His team, including especially Nicole, are of the highest integrity and caliber. That I will return to Mickey's in the future and recommend his shop to others should, I hope, underscore how blown away I was by how they resolved a mistake. Do not bring a full size pick up truck for a wheel alignment. I had called the day before , I needed a wheel alignment and I I had 4 tires I provided, I needed them mounted and balance. I dropped the truck off at 530 am, and got a call on the way home from work, they mounted my 4 tires, but did not have a lift to do the wheel alignment. I now have to bring my truck to another shop, to get the alignment done. The tires came out to $45 a piece to get mounted and balanced. They did dispose of my old tires. read more

I found this place based on good Yelp reviews. Came here after a bad experience at local Subaru service center for my Subaru car (see that review and do not go, I am sure they wanted to scam me). Subaru said I needed all new wheels after I went back a second time when they botched my tire rotation. Luckily I followed my gut and left needing a second opinion for this $600 job. John at this shop looked at my car for free and even showed me the dent in my one wheel where he said that can be fixed in 5 minutes. John did not charge me for his time. .... Excuse the long post, but if you care about your car(s) and want a mechanic you can totally depend on, read on... My car was in service for front end whining noise with a local mechanic who couldn't diagnose or fix the issue and only made the noise louder, and had replaced 3 steering pumps and still had my car going on 2 weeks. They gave me the car to test, which was a huge mistake because the noise was so loud, and unfortunately I felt very concerned and needed to get off the main road I was on, off to a side street to stop and call the shop. Unfortunately, at that time there are no turns 7 to 9am and I got a 2-point ticket which I'm now fighting in court, and my car still wasn't near to being fixed! At that point, I opened YELP!, searched on Subaru Repair close to me and found Mickey's Automotive, which has stellar reviews. I called, spoke to John who couldn't have been nicer and was happy to hear the issue(s) and told me to bring the car right over if I could. I could, did and when I drove in, John and Mickey and a couple mechanics listened, and put it right on a lift. The first thing they did was take a look at the Steering Pump fluid which was bubble gum pink in color instead of deep dark red, an was full of air. They said they could fix the problem and since I had so many pumps in just a couple weeks they wanted to be extra sure they found and fixed the problem. They first flushed the system thoroughly and then tightened everything in the steering system. The noise was much better John said, but still not sounding like "factory" and felt the bad fluid might have damaged the 3rd pump and wanted to replace it, which I approved and which was the final component in their service that solved the problem. They kept the car to make sure there wasn't any bad fluid left or air or air leaks in the system. I've had the car back now several weeks and it's still like NEW! The "take aways" here are that everyone at Mickey's Automotive really care about their customers, their work being top-notch and making sure problems are solved and their customers are happy. Mickey even gave me a ride home! This all felt like I'd gone from a desert to an oasis! I always wonder if great Internet reviews are real or planted. I'm sure that happens, but in Mickey's case, I got exactly the same professional, excellent, fast, knowledgeable, fairly-priced service that I read here in YELP! I felt like "family" from the second John took my first call. Both John and Mickey are not only great at what they do, they "get" how a car problem can really upset your life, especially after another shop only made matters worse. I was envisioning having to dump the car and worried how that would even work, with that awful noise. Who'd want it? Although a 2004, with only 70,000 miles and being a Subaru, I should get years left on this vehicle and now will because I found a shop who's team really knows what they are doing, have an old time excellent work ethic and I know Mickey's will take care of any car problems and me along with them. I can't recommend them highly enough. If you have a difficult problem or just need a local car shop to service and care for your car over time, Mickey's Automotive is where you need to take it. I had previously been getting my car repairs done elsewhere, but decided to give Micky's a try since it was close to my house. My car was done faster, the communication was more clear and less pushy, and the labor rate was much lower. I've been to auto shops and dealerships around here (Toyota dealer to King's Shell gas station) but I always come out disappointed. They either trying to rip you off by offering unnecessary repairs or their incompetency. Some will still charge you a good amount even if they can't be able to fix the problem and not to mention wasting a few days of your time. I decided to try here based on many great reviews. These guys are the nicest and welcoming people in the business. They're very honest and do not try to sell you on unnecessary fixes like other shops. On Saturday, May 4, 2019, I brought my 2015 Malibu to Mickey's Automotive to have an oil change and tire rotation. I also requested that they check all fluids. I sat in the waiting room until my car was done. After about an hour and a half, Dan, Mickey's Manager, said the car was good and would be done shortly. Once the car was ready Dan told me that I needed 3 calipers (two rear and left front) He explained how this sometimes happens that three can go and the forth may never fail. I was shocked because I was not having any trouble with the brakes. He told me I needed to have this done immediately or the brakes would be destroyed. He said the worse case scenario the cost would be $1,000. Something told me to have someone else check this. Not only did my grandson who is in the military as a mechanic tell me it didn't sound right but I took the car to the dealer mechanic and as I thought, nothing is wrong with the calipers! The dealer mechanic told me the brakes would be pulling and worn down unevenly and none of the was happening. He said the brake pads were good and wearing evenly. The calipers were fine. If I listened to Dan and didn't go with my instincts, I would have been out of $1,000 for a repair that was not needed. I have no way of contacting Mickey but if he doesn't find out that his staff is doing this, he is going to lose his business. I will never go back and I was a customer for years. I'm done!!!! BTW, there was an elderly lady that picked up her car while I was waiting for mine that Dan told her she had a leak in her transmission line. He also told her she needed to bring her car back that week immediately. She looked puzzled that there was an issue. I hope she go a second opinion first like I did. I am a British Collector of 1st generation Ford Mustang's who happened upon a very early 1964 Mustang Coupe in Tarrytown. First problem is that it had been stored in a garage for two years. The second problem is that it did not run! The third problem is that I am thousands of miles away, across the Atlantic Ocean! All three problems were solved by contacting Mickey at Mickey's Autos. After searching through various recommended garages (auto shops) I chose Mickey's, because of all of the excellent reviews. And I was not wrong. Mickey has collected the Mustang from the vendors garage, diagnosed and fixed the problem and has given me an overall opinion of the car.
