Short Review: An overwhelmingly competent local repair shop with high level expertise throughout the business. I honestly can't recommend more highly! Affordable. Trust-worthy. Excellent. Everything you want in car repair. Long Review: Finding a good mechanic is like finding a good dentist, it takes a long time to get one that's trustworthy, reliable and able to communicate problems effectively. Once you discover a keeper, you'll never go anywhere else. That's Fred's. We just moved across the country, so we brought our 2016 Subaru Forester to the nearby Subaru service center (not knowing a good local place) to diagnose a check engine light so we could get our emissions registration sticker. Subaru diagnosed a single faulty mass air flow sensor, but were charging $1,500 to replace it, which seemed stupid expensive. The sensor costs $300 and takes an hour or so to replace, so out of principle I felt obligated to find another shop to handle the repair. We were recommended Fred's by a friend, who brought in his BMW (he's fancy). We brought the car in with the paperwork from Subaru explaining the issue and repairs required, so we asked Fred's not to do their own diagnostic. Christina scheduled us right away, they replaced the sensor by midday and charged us less than $500 ($1,000 (!) less than Subaru). After they replaced the sensor, our check engine light came back on. Christina asked if I could come by right away. Fred and John looked it over immediately at no cost and explained the things Subaru likely missed in their diagnostic of the check engine code. They ran their own full diagnostic to confirm their suspicions. They replaced the parts and after having 2 other $300 sensors replaced, the whole thing still cost less than Subaru was going to charge for the single sensor. The team is smart, efficient and effective at sharing their knowledge, you'll always understand what they're doing and never feel like you're getting screwed. And Christina, at the front desk, deserves a special shout-out, because as far as I can tell, she is doing the repairs and diagnostics herself. She communicates effectively and professionally about the shop's recommendations, the time the repair will take, and all without wasting your time. They made our headache go away and made us feel good about it. We're lucky to have found them. read more

they towed my truck in town, only a block and a half away from getting pulled over. And then towed my truck to my house, which is a block and a half from their shop. and charge me an astounding $432 for less than a quarter mile of work. Greedy could be a place and this would be it. As far as the automotive, I've heard nothing but good but towing and taking care of your neighbor they do not care. I'm from the city and I've had my trucks towed from New Jersey to Brooklyn and it cost me $450. and this guy charged me around the same amount because he knew I was in the pinch. As a fellow business owner, you help your neighbors out and being greedy will bite you in the ass in the long run. I am absolutely disgusted. Do not use this place for towing purposes! My truck now is making amy truck now is making different noise and not running correctly , again, as as far as mechanics I cannot comment I've heard nothing but good things. And the staff was nothing but professional, and very nice people. I have been using Fred for about 4 years. He has serviced three of my cars and kept my old Saab 9-3 running long after other mechanics told me to get rid of it. Avoid this place. I use to go to our local auto repair shop back in Troy NY, where the mechanics are honest and sincere. But this summer, due to an intern opportunity I stayed in Ossining and had to choose an auto repair shop for our 12 year old car. What I experienced is just terrible and it makes me question the validity of all the 5 star reviews here. Our car has a noise when breaking, it is not supposed to be serious. However, after the $110 worth of diagnose, this place made a list and it will gauge us over $2000. They think I am a girl and know nothing about the car, but they are wrong. The list includes the replacement of timing belt, A/C, tires and a few other things. I replaced the timing belt 3 years ago and I knew it will last for another 10 years or more. The reason for replacing the A/C is just beyond sense. This is literally the worst place from my years of experience. The fact it receives a few 5 stars makes me want to write down this review and warn the others. read more

On this hot summer day, my air conditioner broke. I went to different auto body shops and everyone waved me off saying they had no time. When I went to Freds, the guy at the front was amazingly friendly and said he'd be able to fix it today because it was just too hot out!! I wanted to recommend these guys to anyone with auto repair needs. I had an overheating problem with my car which I tried to get repaired at 3 other shops before trying Fred's. They all professed to have fixed the problem, charging me for unnecessary parts and labor, while not in fact, fixing anything. Fred's not only fixed the problem, but theirs was the cheapest fix! About a year and a half later, my 96 Integra was experiencing other issues and Fred told me straight up that fixing the issues was probably more money than the car was worth. Every step of the way, Fred's was honest with me. Some say they charge a lot, but frankly, over the years I've spent way more money with half-assed or dishonest repair jobs. They earn what they charge. They're honest, thorough, and across from the gym. I highly recommend. read more

Went to Fred's for a NYS inspection. When I came back to pick up they charged me $80 for replacing wiper blades. Their wipers broke after a week. With the glowing reviews I expected that they would be better than that. Disappointed. read more

snowing and went off road a few feet down. men were nice but raped on us completely on the fee! charged us $175 and didn't tow us ANYWHERE. JUST TO PULL US OUT! $50 charge for an extra person we didn't GO ANYWHERE, he offered me and my baby to sit in his tow truck for about 3 minutes while they pulled it back by a wire everyone said he raped us on prices. Highly annoyed and disappointed at the taking advantage of the situation we were in. Must have been that we had a nice truck and out of state plates. I've been towed through Jersey over a bridge into NYC for 120 and that was only because it as through a toll bridge! Towed through my city for $70! Price was outrages and completely took advantage.
