I needed an external USB CDRW and this was the only place I could find one (and they actually had a couple to choose from). So before I write this review, first let me start off by saying my Toshiba Satellite is under warranty. More importantly, is to inform everybody that after I called Toshiba, Toshiba told me that Micro Center would be the best option to aid me regarding my technical difficulties. The difficulty I had was my AC Charging Tip located on the left side of my laptop was altered from its original location. As a result, I was not able to utilize my AC Charger to charge my laptop. In addition to the following, there was also a minor space between where my laptop keyboard sat and the bottom casing also. When I took my laptop into the service center, the representative tried to "inform me" in a rude manner that my laptop won't be serviced because it was not "bought buy Micro Center". To include, that there was a $70.00 service fee in order to perform a diagnostic on my laptop before actually servicing it. I forgot the guys name -- although he's of hispanic descent & wore a pink & white striped plaid shirt with a navy wool pullover -- but I told him I was informed by one of his associates that the $70.00 is irrelevant as I'm under Toshiba Warranty. He than tried to through me corporate policies and that Micro Center was a "Third Party Agency" that's not entirely a "Service Based Toshiba Lab top Center" but a "Contracted Business Entity" as if I didn't know that -__- So after going back and forth with him on the technicalities and how I understood Micro Center's "corporate policies", he tells me to hold on as he wanted to ask a technician for clarity. Five Minutes later he comes back and says my laptop qualifies for a free diagnostic since its under warranty -- followed by taking my information down. At the same time, however, he starts performing his own self-diagnosis on my laptop looking for discrepancies. At this point and time I'm literally telling myself......"He must think I'm a flipping idiot as if I don't know what he's doing". So after 3 more minutes of watching him "diagnose" my laptop, he tells me it's physically-damaged because there were a few "broken chips" on the bottom portion of my ventilation case. As a result, I told him "I know that. That's not what I'm here for. I'm here to get my laptop re-seated so that I can utilize my charger to charge my laptop". At this point he becomes frustrated. Now some of you might ask why would he become frustrated. To answer this is simple. Because I'm not a gullible idiot when it comes to computer maintenance. So after trying to "educate him" on what I know...he starts to fill out the form on his computer screen for a third time. Meanwhile, another representative from the Technical Office comes over to inquire about the situation. When the CS Rep came over, he tells the Service Representative that he spoke with me in regards to my situation. To include, telling the Service Representative to have the Service Technician see if they can do a "re-seat" to fix my problem. After about 10 minutes, both the Service Technician & the Service Representative come back telling me "my warranty won't cover the damage that needs to be fixed". Moreover, is telling me in order to fix it....I would have to pay $70.00 for the service fee and $130.00 for a new laptop bottom casing as quote on quote they said "Once its removed it can't be reseated and that my AC Tip is a cord not affixed with the case itself but how it runs across the motherboard" -__- So anyway guys and gals, here is the kicker. I went next door to CVS, I bought a screw driver kit and went home. When I went home, I placed my laptop on my kitchen table and started working on my laptop. To be brutally honest, I found a YouTube video with my laptop model -- Toshiba C855D Satellite -- that provided steps by steps on how to disassemble my laptop. Guess what? - I fixed my AC Tip Input as it DIDN'T run all the way ACROSS the motherboard that the Service Technician stated. - I reseated my laptop bottom casing as it relies on "screws" to secure the casing to the laptop itself. With that being said, there are some things Micro Center is good for. The answer is to get cheap quality products as the majority of things you can DO ON YOUR OWN if you utilize the world wide web. Like seriously, this procedure took me less than fifteen minutes to perform versus the "2-days" Micro Center said it would take. Below is the link to the youtube video. Although I live in Maryland, I make the extra trip to Virginia for this particular Micro Center purely for the level of Customer Service and Technical Expertise. The MC in Rockville, MD (MUST BE) managed my a different group because the VA store makes it known that they are there to serve and assist and the Rockville/Bethesda Customer Service staff act like they are "doing you a HUGE favor" just to acknowledge you, much less serve or assist you in your inquiry (ie. anything from asking the staff where an item is located -- to technical expertise and problem solving) TAKE THE EXTRA 20 MINUTES AND GO TO THIS STORE! read more

Its funny i walked in and no one asked me if i needed help i litterally spent $2k in the store and basically had to beg for help. maybe it was because im young and was being prejudged but eventually i started getting good service and they noticed i was spending actual money. I did return the next day because my motherboard was faulty but that happens and the same men were there this time it seemed as if they were rushing to help me and upsell me on all of the expensive products. I think next time i will just order parts online instead of get these guys commission for helping. read more

This place is great and easily competes with online sites such as newegg or tigerdirect on prices without having the shipping cost. They have a lot of staff on the floor which makes finding things or answering questions very easy. The service line can take forever and it's usually only staffed by one or two people. The employees in the service department do an amazing job handling everyone's problems without getting frustrated , I know I would with the things I overheard while waiting in line. I had some fans installed on my fiances computer...yea I was very embarrassed to bring the subject up to them, but no smirks were detected! One of the techs was walking by and even showed us a previous install he did and was very knowledgeable on the subject and helped with the fan configuration which was awesome. Unfortunately the fans didn't light up her PC like I hoped, but that has NOTHING to do with microcenter or the install. I plan on installing some strip lights to fix that problem. But hey, five fans are greater than two, so it's a win win situation. If people want the service line to run faster I suggest you come prepared because the employees are very patient and are just trying to get all the information possible to help you. For example; if you have a password on your computer and they need to access your computer...you might want to have your password ready for them instead of taking a few minutes debating wither or not you have one or what it is. The checkout line gets backed up very easily too, maybe microcenter should introduce some kind of card scanner instead of taking several minutes to go over your personal information. I realize that micro center is not what I would call an upscale computer store, however there is nothing left in the entire East Coast that could compare to it regarding your choice and availability of all computer parts, graphic cards, routers, cpu, memory, monitors, accessories cables, stands, laptops and anything else you could possibly think of for IT. The advantage of the store is I can actually see the product and check the specs to make sure it's going to work with any computer pieces that I already have. I could not do this with an online site such as new egg or Amazon. It's a laid-back atmosphere but the sales staff of always been helpful and I still always go out of my way to the shop here for any computer related purchases. read more

This review is related only to customer service because I like the store. On Friday I went there to leave my laptop in the service center. It was approximately 8:40ish pm. The store is open until 9:00 pm. However, I wasn't expecting this kind of treatment. The young woman (that has long hair and wear glasses) asked me: "how can I help you"? I looked at her and said "I need service repair" and she looked at the young man (that was in the room (the extended room in the service center) and said "What the F***". Her tone and loudness were clear for me to hear that! Here is my point, if the store is open until 9:00 pm I could go there and request the service, and if she is not happy and willing to help customers she should not be working in the place where she needs to interact with customers. The guy that spoke with me was very kind and helpful. My computer is working well but I can't believe the rudeness some people have towards others. I did not deserve to hear that! read more

I took my MacBook into MicroCenter because Apple Support made an appointment for me there when they could not assist me further remotely. Initially, I was really impressed -- no lines and crowds like if I'd gone to the Apple Store Genius Bar! The check in process was pretty smooth, except that apparently none of the information collected by Apple Support, that was supposed to be transmitted, had been, but that was an easy enough fix. The ticket I received said to expect a call within 3 days. A week later, no contact, so I called the store. Granted, it's over the holidays, so I imagine things move a little slower. The person who answered the phone checked and told me my computer hadn't even been looked at but he'd have the technician who came in next day check it and call me. Another week later, still no call and no one will even answer the phone. Super annoying that the local phone number that I call is answered at a national call center, so there's no way of getting in touch with ANYONE at the store directly. Extremely poor business model. Two weeks in and not even a diagnosis.... read more

Have gotten things that don't work at times, but this isn't the fault of the store, it's the industry and cheap components being built overseas. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Good pricing also. Only issue.They got my email address and now spam me. I try to unsubscribe but their system does not work. The mail preferences page never boots. They also never answer their phones at the store and voice mail system is intentionally evasive I think to prevent proper consumer contact. That is a bit of a scam. Have been on phone multiple times with them for 10-15 minutes each time trying to reach a proper person because they do not have extensions listed, no proper consumer contact system. This has to be the best electronics store in the area. Only reason I would go to best buy over here is if I didn't feel like taking the drive from Woodbridge to Fairfax. On the last visit I used the pickup at store option. It was responsive though that section of the store was understaffed. MicroCenter seems to turn off the phone so you cannot call in this time of year, which is frustrating. I asked the Front manager, and he said that the reason why they do this is because they would rather have an extra person at the registers that answering phones. I wish they were changed us. Ive built a few computers from parts purchased here. This is a great store with great selection and very good prices when on special. The greatest advantage is that if parts dont work or conflict with your computer you just return them - no postage. The second best thing is the people working there. They are very knowledgeable. I went in for a new WiFi usb dongle (my old one wasnt working well) and the person that helped me knew which type worked best with my particular FIOS router. My internet speed literally tripled. There have been other times when they recommend different upgrades on my builds that increase performance and reduce cost. Really helpful and timesaving. read more

My brother owns a home computer set up and repair business in Texas. We've been going to Micro Center there and here for years. It is a one stop shop for everything electronic, computer or otherwise. Their prices can't be beat. I bought two computers here and the service on them is excellent. If something needs fixing they will often do it under manufacturer warranty for free. Even water damage. Great place. I love coming here for computers, games, Apple stuff, etc. fun times. read more

Pros: Micro Center has very good prices. It's nice to know that not all computer parts will break the bank. Cons: - Long Lines: I waited 30 minutes in the returns line with one cashier working on a Sunday and waited another 30 minutes in line to check out with not all the registers being utilized. - Disorganized Store: It's nearly impossible to find what you want. The store is always messy and the open boxed items are scattered across the whole store. - Pushy Employees: It's nice to know that someone is willing to help you but it's a little frustrating when the employees only approach you to slap a sticker on your product. read more

I have been going here, the one at Nutley st., for years primarily to buy items to use when I build my own computer. Due to the complexity of the parts working together and the combo CPU MB deals the prices are really good and you can walk out with a cart full of components and build a computer that same day at home. Its a candy store. If something isn't right you can take it back. I actually took my entire computer I had built back, removed the CPU from the socket, and returned it once I realized I could buy a faster CPU instead. The staff work on commission so make sure you get a sticker they give you pasted onto your product if you think they helped you! The pre-built microcenter brand "Powerspec" computers are a good bargain it and if you don't want to built it yourself have generally a good selection of parts for the price point. Be wary of some of the used/reburbished items - make sure to check the battery cycles on used laptops. The prices are two or three dollars above amazon but you get it the same day can return it so it is usually worth buying from a physical store here instead. Alot of products have multiple rebates. Only count the instant cash register in-store rebates, since you know you will never get around to cutting out UPC and doing manufaturer rebates and dealing with copies of reciepts. ALWAYS keep your receipt and box and all inserts for a while in case you need to return something. read more

Here's the deal. I LOVE microcenter. I am from the south so have never had the opportunity to shop such an environment. I have built, fixed and upgraded hundreds of my own personal computers and friends as well over the years. Microcenter is AWESOME as far as selection and usually you can find great deals on open box items etc. the ONLY reason I gave them 4 stars is their in store inventory does not sync up with the online inventory listed for their store. On a number of occasions I had stopped by to pickup an item that was in stock online, only to get to the store and they tell me they don't have it. Now I order online ahead of time and this has resolved the issue, however it does mean I have to go into the store to see EXACTLY what is available if I'm just browsing. read more

This place is a toy store for techies. It has any and every thing tech you could ever need. I have been a customer of Micro Center for five years now and spent $5000+ dollars worth of product here. I have always loved this place and their products have never let me down. Despite having more tech than I'd know what to do with, it has recently come to light how poor their customer service is. I have bought plenty of products before but this was my first time working with the tech repair guys. So I brought my labtop in about 2 weeks ago with a pretty simple issue. They said the top and bottom casings were breaking off due to missing/broken screws. So they said it'd take 3-5 business + $275 to get the parts and fix it. Wasn't too happy about the price but I guess that's what it takes...I agreed and went on my way. About a week later I got a call saying that the casings were in...however now they saw another problem. Because of my broken casing...now one of my fans was damaged. Now this irritated me. Not because part of my laptop was damaged, but because they left my laptop on a back shelf in their office, not taking a second glance at it until the parts came in. Now because they hadn't taken 10 minutes to just glance over my laptop a bit more thoroughly, I had to wait approximately another week for the fan to come in, along with another $55 out of my pocket. If i had realized that I would be spending $330 on repairs from the start, i would've taken more time to consider just buying a brand new laptop entirely. I will continue to purchase products from this micro center but next time I need a repair or something looked at, I will go else where. And I would recommend others doing the same. read more

MicroCenter doesn't even price-match their own website. Really? An item I wanted in-store was $15 higher than the same item posted on their web (front page item, too) - so I wanted a price match. The person at the computer parts department said "only newegg." I guess this really meant "ONLY newegg" lol. Micro Center did NOT price-match their own web, and apparently I have to pay a "premium" if I wanted it in-store. So I just left. Not buying something for higher $ when I can buy the same item at different sites other than Micro Center for cheaper. I just wanted to have the item in-hand now, which was the reason why I visited Micro Center. I'll do my shopping online from now on, thanks. and no, i won't be using micro center again. read more

I went to micro center to make purchase for a laptop and a monitor. I am not a IT person, I was hoping someone knowledgeable would assist me. Ameen, one of the salesman he guided, spend two hours to understand my needs and worked with my budget. This guy is so awesome. I am so happy with my purchase. When I finalized my purchase store manager came and thank me. I have not seen such a professional behavior anywhere. This place is a wonderful place. Everyone was so easy to work with.
