This place can give any computer geek a full orgasm. If you need anything computer-related or even just some techy gadget, Micro Center is your place. Not only will you probably find what you need, but you'll also get it at a great price. They have plenty of new items and refurbed items. They have better prices than most on all things Mac-related. There's a pretty good gaming section. Other electronics like TVs, stereos and GPSs are also around. Plus the sales team usually know their shit. I've heard mixed things about their return policy but it's always been a good experience for me. I tend to use my mactop (yes, I made that up) for a lot of design projects and need to transfer them back and forth between other computers so I use flash drives a lot. Like candy. Since I use them a lot, inevitably they break. (Luckily I've learned to keep back ups or more like I have a live-in IT geek who makes me back up frequently.) I've been able to get my flash drives swapped out for a new one, no questions asked. Even though my work is lost, it's a relief that I can get a fresh one that hopefully won't suffer the same fate. This location hires salespeople that are more interested in putting their sticker on your checked out products then they are with actually KNOWING ANYTHING about what they are selling. Every time I've been in the store and asked for help, they give me the wrong product and can't locate what you need. If you KNOW what you are doing and looking for, the store is fine and nicely stocked, but if you need advice from an associate...you're taking your chances. read more

Now, I may not be the geek that most are that have written reviews for this place, and I don't mean that in a negative manner. Let me explain this review. I've bought a few things here, and none have worked out that well. In fact, two didn't work at all. When returning them, they were helpful the first time, but not so much the second time. This past weekend I took in a hard drive and a laptop to have the data transferred. The service rep behind the counter glared at me and told me to fill out some paperwork, which I did. Then, he told me he couldn't help me and I'd have to contact the manufacturer. Hard to explain how he treated me, but he basically told me to f*ck off in geek terms. They have a lot of good deals here, but the service I've experienced has been poor. Great people watching if you want some "Real Science" flashbacks. But, make sure to be prepared for a strong B.O. stench in the air. read more

Overland Park alone has 60+ computer stores. So you'd think they'd have to know their stuff to stay in business. Micro Center has been around for awhile and it always seems busy, so when my computer died last year I gave them a try -- with mixed results. When I dropped my computer off, I told the person at the counter I didn't know what was wrong with my computer, but I wanted my data saved if at all possible. The very young guy told me that if they wiped the computer, I'd also have to replace my operating system, so I bought a new Windows license, just in case. From there things went downhill. In the end, all my computer needed was a new memory stick. But what I paid for was the memory stick, a back-up hard drive, a new Windows license and the labor to make everything work. I waited longer than they told me I'd have to, and the repair was more expensive than I expected after all the add-ons, but what could I do? I needed my computer for work. The final straw came a month later when my new version of Windows locked my out. I'd procrastinated about registering it, and when I did, I got an error message saying my serial number had exceeded its allowed registrations. But I bought it off the shelf! Back went my computer to Micro Tech. And this time I went straight to a manager. When I explained the problems I'd had, the work I'd paid for but didn't think I really needed, and my displeasure at being without my computer a second time, she made it right. I got a refund for everything but the memory card and labor. But I didn't get the lost time back, or any relief from the frustration of being computer-less two times. My advice? If you need unknown repairs and you're on a deadline, give someone other than Micro Tech a shot at fixing the problem first and getting it right the first time. read more

I am going to go against the grain here and rag on micro center for a little while. I feel like with their computers they pull some bait and switch techniques. For example, this Saturday, I went to buy a computer. They had computers in their ads they didn't have in the store. They also had a computer on the shelf with a price tag below it. When I asked if they had that computer, they said "yes, but for a different price." What is that about? Is it too much for me to expect that the price tag is what I am going to pay for the computer? I also hate hate hate being asked what I am going to use my computer for. I seriously doubt men get asked this question. I normally shop for electronics at a big box store. I won't name it here, but it rhymes with Vest Guy. And I hate it. This shop? They GET it. My two sons, early teens, are obsessed with drones. And the staff here was absolutely helpful, courteous and knowledgeable on the subject. Every question we asked received a thorough, polite, and helpful answer. This place is a joke. After not being able to use a gift card on their online store. I called the store to see about ordering it from them and paying at the store. the employee who answered the phone after it rang for several minutes said they could. After arriving at the store I was told that they don't do that. Guess I am out an hour of driving to get here to be more upset than I was before. GINORMOUS! Such a wide selection. It's really rare to find stores like this with such a wide variety and also geared towards geeks who like to put their stuff together from scratch. They have friendly staff, but some of them aren't too knowledgable about their products. However, if you ask someone else, they will be. The only thing I was disappointed about was a small selection of bluetooth headphones. Doesn't the typical geek need to play their console in the quiet so the wifey doesn't wake up? Here is the deal with Micro Center:: if you are not computer savvy you could potentially be taken advantage of. Over the course of many visits I have happened to overhear a handful of sales pitches from the salespeople which were not only disingenuous, they were downright condescending. I hate to flame a fire, but if you are elderly or female, chances are that a lot of BS is going to be shot your way. Your experience at this store will be entirely dependent upon the quality of salesperson who latches onto you. Generally speaking, prices seem to be reasonable. From my experience, prices are close to and sometimes better than NewEgg.com, which is widely regarded as *the* go-to place for computer parts. I do not begrudge Mr. Computer Salesperson for his long greasy hair or earrings but I do often feel like I need to shower after visiting this place. Best computer repair shop in the Kansas City Metro! I have been carrying around an old broken iMac for years and finally took it to the Apple store who referred me to this Micro Center. Every employee I encountered was so nice and helpful. It was easy to check-in and they explained it all clearly. I come here over Best Buy any day! The service is generally pleasant and they know their products. I have purchased many items here including printer ink, mouse pads, headphones, hard drives, and paper. They price match other places and have sale ads every week. Why not five stars you ask? Micro Center seems to be a hit or miss. In my opinion, it's more a miss. I haven't actually bought an item from Micro Center for reasons you will read below. I have browsed around the store for hours looking through the aisles. The advantage of Micro Center is their item stock and variety. I think they have almost anything that you would need to either build a computer or other technological device that requires cables, batteries, etc. They also sell prebuilt computers, new and/or refurbished. Of course they also have a mobile phone section like every other electronics store. They also have accessories for phones and laptops where you can find good deals. The reason I am not a big fan of Micro Center are largely from what I have heard around the store. Yes, it may be rude to eavesdrop in conversations but I do have ears. From most of the conversations I have heard, many of the employees on the floor seem poorly trained or have no idea what they are answering when a customer has a question. During my recent visit, a customer had questions about BLU, a smart phone company that builds unlocked phones at low prices and are contract-less. The employee did not have any knowledge about what bands would work with the phone or which wireless company here in the United States would be compatible with the phone. A simply GSM versus CDM search in the phone's technical documents can help you figure that out. I can't knock all employees as I think there are some that do know what they are doing and what they are selling. I imagine those who work in the computer section know what they are telling their customers when they go to build a computer. I briefly walked past another conversation and he seems to know what cooling fans do and which to go with. Truth be told, I went to Micro Center to browse around because I am a nerd and like to do so. However, I did spend an hour looking for a Displayport to VGA adapter and it took me a few aisles to find them. Once I did find it, I saw the price and instantly was puzzled. The same adaptor was less than $10 on Amazon but was $39.99 here. No way Jose, so I checked around and could not find another version. So I simply left and felt a bit empty. At least my wallet still felt full. In the end, I still think Amazon or other online retailers such as Newegg can get you a better deal, provided you are not charged an exorbitant amount of fees for shipping and taxes. I do think Micro Center is a good place to go if you need something right then and there, otherwise, I can wait 2 days... read more

We're no longer wanting to lease a modem from our ISP. After looking around, a modem and router combo would set us back $200 for decent equipment. Micro Center was the last resort before I ordered online. I was hoping to find the best price before shelling out 200 bucks! I'm glad we stopped by. Daniel was very helpful with showing us our options, sharing his experience and recommendations. Overall, very pleased with my shopping experience. We ended up buying the modem and router separately which saved us a little money and we also took advantage of their replacement warranty for the modem ($10). read more

My opinion of Micro Center was a 5 out of 5 until recently. I had bought a Dell laptop there a few years ago, and I was about 2 weeks out of the 2 year warranty I bought there, when a loose electrical connection started causing the unit to just randomly loose all power, literally in like a quarter second... sometimes it would work fine for 10 minutes and sometimes it was 10 seconds. I went over to check it in, and while I was waiting in line, I dropped the computer! I was freaking out thinking I must have broken additional stuff on top of the faulty connection, but I went and sat down and turned it on and I kept waiting for the sudden loss of power but it just wasn't happening! I went ahead and checked it in and explained the situation, and they said they could still probably find and resolve the issue. Someone by the name of Jordan called me a few days later and told me that it ran fine in the primitive MS-DOS mode, but when he booted it all the way into Windows, that it happened immediately. He told me the cause was my computer being flooded with viruses and Trojans, and the necessary course of action was a full reformat and fresh install of windows and all my software, which he quoted at $170. I laughed and told him to not do anything and that I would have a buddy who is computer savvy do it for half the cost. This was several seeks ago, and to this day, I have not had the computer repeat what that man said it was doing when he booted it into windows! On a side note, when I dropped the unit while waiting to check it in, I broke the cosmetic exterior panel on the back of the monitor, and a manager said "ya we probably have a few of those that we can hook you up with". When I came back to pick the computer up, I inquired about getting one of those. The guy who I talked with told me "the panel is $50, and then you have the installation cost". he said the installation was $40... that's 30 seconds of brainless work, and he talked down to me on the subject like it was freakin brain surgery! He said "we install parts... we don't just sell them", to which I pointed to all the inventory racks of computer parts behind me and said "so what exactly is going on with all that?" He then walked away because he knew damn good and well how wrong he was. Aside from these 2 guys, I have had good experiences at this store, but these 2 cases were glaring flaws in these guys character. If I had the name of the guy who wanted to charge me $90 for a $30 piece of plastic, I would absolutely post it! I'm not saying don't shop here, but be wary of this kind of stuff! read more

Absolutely the only place I shop for my computer needs. As an IT Professional, I do all my own tech support, so I can't speak on theirs. What I can speak on is the variety of their stock. They have equipment ranging from the cutting edge to a few years old, which is useful if you are working on older equipment yourself. I have never made any huge purchases here, so I also can't speak to any warranties they offer. My purchases have been pretty limited to USB drives, RAM upgrades, and accessories. However, as a techie, I still browse while I am there and, despite just coming in for a USB drive, I still take 20 minutes to walk around the store to gawk and window shop. Years ago, I worked at a competitor, CompUSA, that was a few miles south on Metcalf. This was 9 years ago. CompUSA is long gone. Micro Center is still here. That should tell you that their quality and sizable stock has allowed them to compete in a cutthroat tech business. read more

I want to give them 4-1/2 stars for my first visit but will settle on 5 happily because I think with more trips there this will be true. I went in looking for a specific laptop and although it took a little prodding, I walked out with an amazingly priced, super fast Dell. The less than 5 stars comes from the salesman acting a wee bit rushed and not willing to plug in and start a refurbished laptop for us. But that is one person during one experience. Their supply of ____(fill in the blank) is nothing short of impressive. My husband and I wandered the store for quite awhile oogling all the goodies. It reminds me of Fry's in CA but more manageable sizewise. I have not tried their online store yet but will if I need something since I live about 4 hours away from my closest location. I drove 3 hours here because there isn't one near me where I live and i've always go see what the hype was about. I didn't really expect to get anything but I found a cpu for very cheap but it was out of stock. I then got helped by someone named Bryan who went in the back just to find me one and gave it to me. They were also out of stock on the 30 series gpus but Bryan still went out of his way to search the back for me. He even tried to recommend the best times to come for them and other alternatives. With volatile electronics and computer prices, so many don't know if they get a good deal or not. No other retailers, including Worst Buy....I mean Best Buy, can really touch Microcenter. Their regular prices are usually as low, if not lower, than other retailer's sale prices. I don't usually go anywhere except their BYO(Build Your Own) section. I have yet to run into any unknowledgeable people in that department. They know their stuff. An additional perk is that they can pre-fill Ur rebate forms for items that have rebates at the register. Return policy isn't bad either. If u lose or misplace your receipt, they do their best to find your transaction, provided you gave them your information during check out. read more

Got it all. Games? They have a dedicated game area with 3 systems up for you to play and test away. Flash drives, SD cards, blank DVDs...It's all there for THE best prices around. Help? They have a walk in station to bring your gear or questions to. Now, this can sometimes be a wait, but not usually that long. Now, if the person helping asks what you're going to use your computer for, it's only to help you. If you're using it just to surf and email, then you need only the cheapest. I returned my laptop for a warranty repair on a faulty wireless card but found out it would not be returned before I had to leave for a military deployment. I called the service department and asked if I could pay to expedite the shipping, I was placed on hold while the tech spoke to management and was then informed that I could come in and pick up a brand new laptop and it would be treated as an exchange, several months after I had purchased the computer. This is truly exceptional customer service and Micro Center has earned a loyal customer for life. read more

I love Micro Center! I've been coming here for years for my electronics needs. I bought my I-Mac and my first i-pod here and come here when I need blank DVDs, CDs or the like. I'm a pretty techie person and rarely need help, but when I do there is always someone available. There is even a separate Apple area with Macs and accessories. (Many of these accessories you cannot find at the Apple Store.) Plus, they tend to be slightly lower priced than the competition. Also they have some gadgets that places like Office Depot/Max or Best Buy just don't offer. All in all a great place get that tech gadget you need! read more

This store has lost a long-time customer. I won't be shopping there again after the extremely rude behavior I experienced today. Within moments of finding the aisle with the item I was in search of, an associate asked if I needed help and promptly found what I needed--which happened to be the most expensive of several of the same type of item. In addition a large number of items, especially less expensive store brand items were not marked. He then asked if I needed anything else. I said I wanted to look around for a few possible future purchases. He approached me 4 more times in the next 15 minutes as well as 3 other associates continually besieging me. The woman at the checkout was rude in just about every way you can imagine. When I asked if they had any instore sale adds, she said they're online in her most surly attitude. As I was asking her about the adds, she interrupted me to tell me to take my credit card out of the reader. Again, in a surly and unfriendly way. I was just ready to get out of there and she said "aren't you going to get your receipt". All the time acting like I was intruding on her afternoon. I don't understand and I don't need to shop somewhere where customers are treated like annoyances. I had quite a negative experience here this week. First off it took nearly 45mins to check my computer in, however the staff member I worked with was very apologetic and professional about the whole thing. I was told I would have a quote for the repairs by the end of the day but was not contacted until the next business day with an 'estimate' (that's what he called it) and he said he would have an actual quote to me by the end of the day. It was extremely overpriced for a shattered screen so I went in to pick it up today to take to another repair shop who had quoted me lower. The man I spoke with at the knowledge bar this time was extremely rude to me and talked down to me. It took another 40mins to get out of there with my laptop and there wasn't even anyone in line ahead of me. read more

You want to go somewhere you can get a warranty on your computer and then if it breaks, you can drop it off and they fix it instead of shipping it off and charging you for it? Microcenter has some of the best service in town for computers. They also have a wonderful return policy. Not sure if your computer isn't working because of the power supply? Buy a power supply and try it. Return it, no questions asked. Crap, if you give them your phone number on check out. You don't even have to have a receipt to return. I avoid places like Best Buy as much as I can. Microcenter is full of real computer geeks and it doesn't take long to figure out that its the best computer store in town. read more

I should own stock in this place as much as I've been here and bought from them. Service is hit or miss but usually you can get good help and get what ever it is that you need. And if it's for a PC or Mac, most likely they've got it. And if they don't more than likely it's an online item that nobody else carries in a brick and mortar store either. Parking can be a zoo (do Johnson County cars come with turn signals? Missourians wonder about that). But once inside that is forgotten about as you check out all the cool stuff they carry. 5 Stars! I'm not the most "tech savy" guy but the salesman here are terrific. I hate to even call them "salesman" because they never once tried to up-sell me. I went in to this location yesterday looking for a charger for my Lenovo laptop and the guy that I worked with was terrific. This store has always had a problem when it comes to dealing with younger customers. I am a 23 year old game programmer and computer enthusiast. I come in often looking for parts for my computer that I built myself. Most of the time I never receive any help from anyone which isn't to bad considering most of the staff knows about as much as I do about the specific product I am looking at but on occasion I do need to ask some questions when I'm just not the most knowledgable about the products. I was looking for a high end computer that I would be using to build video games, since this is my degree I am working on in school, and after standing there for about 20 minutes and having everyone around me helped and a sales associate stand there talking to another sales associate about a game they were playing I decided this is NOT the type of place I would like to do business with any longer. This store treats younger customers like they don't exist or that they are completely stupid, which really makes no sense considering that the people who are more likely to spend the big bucks on a product are people like me who are getting a degree in something that requires more performance out of a computer. This store could really use some training on NOT profiling customers and instead just giving customer service to all of the people in their store. read more

I can't recall a time I've ever come in here that I haven't left totally satisfied. I love Micro Center. They have great deals and prices, friendly and helpful staff, and awesome products. I think what I like most is the staff knows what they're talking about, unlike so many other computer/ electronic stores (*cough* Best Buy *cough*). My fiance, dad, and several friends have gone here to buy the hardware required to build themselves "super computers" and haven't had many problems. Yesterday I purchased an inexpensive DVD player, took it home, tried it out, found it didn't do what I needed, and returned it. I then bought a higher end player (still at Micro Center) and found it did what I needed. BUT - in the process I realized I'd left a library-owned DVD in the player I returned. Today I called Micro Center and the manager, Scott, searched for the player, unboxed it, found the DVD, and within 3 hours I had it back in my possession. That was fantastic customer service. Before this I thought of Micro Center as a place to buy "stuff", but Scott has made me a "customer for life". Kudos to Scott and his team at the Overland Park Micro Center. read more

Cool store with all your electronic needs. I highly recommend this place. It's just so far out of my way, I usually wait until I need several things before I pay a visit. In this case, I desperately needed a new router for my home and my brother reminded me that this would be the place to get it. I stood around for a bit, trying to figure out what I wanted and then one of the sales associates who had been working with a couple concluded his business with them and promptly asked me if I needed assistance. I told him what I wanted and that I didn't need anything ultra fancy or to spend a lot of money. He directed me to something that was fairly priced and right within my needs and I was out the door and on my way home to try it in no time. I've never had a bad experience at this store. read more
