Excellent experience. The front office staff is super friendly and helpful. I called with a last minute need for an inspection and was able to get seen immediately. They gave the car the required state inspection as well as a bumper to bumper mechanical inspection. They identified a couple of minor routine items but weren't pushy about getting me to have them corrected then and there. They just made me aware and I was on my way. My daughter recently visited Midas on Durham Chapel Hill Blvd for a routine oil change. She brought it in because she had noticed her maintenance light come on. Less than 2 months later, she found herself alone in her car, broken down and stuck in rush hour traffic on a 2-lane road. She called us in a panic saying her car would not start. She was by herself with angry drivers honking their horns, yelling and swearing at her. She was afraid to get out of her car. Fortunately, a few good Samaritans helped her push her car to a side road. When we arrived, the tow truck had kindly done a quick inspection and found that the oil filter was not tightened properly and saw oil pouring out from around it. He said, "it was almost falling off". When he touched his finger to the oil filter, he noted that fresh oil was dripping out. My husband went under the car and confirmed this as well. We took the car back to Midas. Kenny, the manager, was initially very reassuring. He seemed to be genuinely concerned and sympathetic saying he would do whatever it took to make it right. I expressed my concerns about the oil being completely empty despite the recent oil change and the potential of that damaging the engine. I even asked, specifically, what would happen if the engine was damaged and needed to be replaced. He again reassured us they'd take care of it; however, one week later and the engine disassembled and left in disarray, Midas's district manager, Mike Gurney, refused to accept Midas's employee's negligence and role in the destruction of our vehicle. He refused to apologize and blamed this on driver negligence. He gave no reassurance that employees would be trained properly to prevent this from happening again. He showed no concern for their customers' safety. We were not even seeking any compensation but an apology and reassurance that changes would be made to make sure this would not happen to anyone else. He still refused to acknowledge Midas's negligence and provide any reassurance that corrections would be made to ensure the safety of others. I would not trust Midas with any vehicle as they obviously have poor workmanship and no regard for their customers' safety. read more

I took my husband's car about a month ago to get lots of things done: Annual emission check, engine oil change, and wheel alignment (almost $250 worth of work). Although the Yelp review was pretty low, their Google review was pretty high. So I decided to give it a try, but I am quite disappointed with Midas. Only couple weeks after I got the car inspected with Midas, I started to hear metal to metal rubbing sound coming from the rear tires. I checked the car inspection sheet Midas gave me to confirm that the brakes were in good shape via visual inspection. But the noise kept on coming, and we are about to take this car on a road trip in July. So one month after the visit with Midas, I used a flashlight to check on the rear brakes and the brake pads look pretty thin. Just to be safe, I went to another shop to check out on the "noise" to find out the rear brakes were in a bad shape. I had to replace both of the brake pads and the rotor itself. This ended up being a pretty expensive job because the rotor was damaged from brake pad wearing out, and metal to metal contact resulted in deforming the rotor. I wish the technician at Midas was able to visually tell that the rear brakes were bad, so I could've fixed the problem before it occurred. My overall experience was disappoint due to the brake issue, but everything else was good. The shop where the customers are waiting doesn't have an AC on usually? When I told them I will be waiting for the car to be finished, they turned the AC on for me. The employees were friendly as well. I wish the tech was more attentive to our car during my visit back in May. read more

went in for a rear main seal....they broke more than they fixed. it was 2 years ago but the memories still linger. after i picked it up it was still leaking. they took it back in and then when i got it back they said don't come back.... it still leakrd after that. i took it to another shop who found out the oil pan they replaced after breaking was not installed properly and there was the leak.. avoid this place. read more

No one likes to take their car to a mechanic not knowing if they are great or shady and try to tell you 6 things wrong with your car. I have had service at several Midas' garages throughout the country and they are, for the most part, very good. I wanted to give a special shout-out to this Midas... and the owner, Rajesh Sutariya. Had some issues the my Toyota Sienna, rear suspension and shocks. He showed my van while up on the racks and explained what may be the problem. He did not try to sell me anything, just pointed it out, and gave me some options. I can't say enough of how well I was treated, and not charged for the time to test drive the car and isolate the issue. If this was done at a Toyota Dealership, I would be charged $85.00 ( I called) . Also a BIG Kudo's to Chase, who handles the front office. Just a great guy who also gave me some suggestions. I've been to this Midas 5 times for the standard $25 oil change and tire rotation. The location is pretty no frills with older chairs, a small waiting room, and no amenities, but I figured for $25, I didn't mind so much. I'm turned off by the service I got, though. I have a family friend back at home who does all of my auto repair stuff for cheap, so I always have him check out anything another mechanic tells me before I get work done. Good thing too. Every time I go here, they seem to find something wrong with my car. First, they told me I had a minor oil leak. My guy found no leak, even though Midas had specified where they thought the leak was. (A friend of mine had a similar first experience; it should have been a tip-off.) Then they told me that my power steering fluid was leaking; I knew this already and got it fixed elsewhere. Next trip: they told me my power steering fluid was still leaking. Nope. Fourth time around, they told me my struts needed to be replaced because they were ruined; again, false. My fifth and final trip, they found nothing wrong with my car, so I thought maybe I'd judged them too quickly. The next week, my air conditioning broke. When I took it to the dealership to be fixed, they asked if I'd had any work done recently. Turns out a vital part of my a/c system had essentially been ripped off, something they'd never seen happen before. So it looks like either Midas sabotaged my car so I'd come back and pay for more work, like they always try to get me to do, OR through sloppy work, they accidentally ruined my a/c system. Neither option is appealing. Obviously, I can't be sure, but for me, it was just too much. I won't be back. A cheap oil change is not worth the other services you will need (or they'll try to tell you that you need) if you go here. read more

Bottom line: Don't go here for any kind of work done on your car even if all the other local mechanics tell you it will be forever before they get to your car. I made that mistake and opted for Midas when a few other places told me there would be a very extensive wait. Well, the quoted one hour of work at Midas turned into five hours so I guess the joke was on me. In addition to the time drain, I noticed that their prices were steeper than those offered by nearby competitors. Now I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I did notice that every other customer in the shop throughout the afternoon was asked at some point by an employee to "come and look at this..." and subsequently told that more work should be done on their car then expected (as noted in Meg T.'s review as well). Maybe that was all just a coincidence, but then again maybe not. I also observed a few patrons leave the shop in disgust after being ignored or realizing that the anticipated time of service quoted by the employees was grossly underestimated. I don't like to be such a hater, but service here simply was pretty horrible. You definitely get the sense of being ignored and neglected here, rather than feeling like you are a valued customer in any way. read more

I received a coupon for a complimentary oil-change in the mail and decided to head to this location to claim it. The oil that my 1999 Acura CL got was 5W-30 SH, though the documentation never said whether the oil was conventional oil or a synthetic blend. The location itself is a ways away from most places, so expect to be walking a while to any shops while your car is being serviced. Also, the waiting room doesn't have free WiFi or any other amenities. read more

Their oil changes are ridiculously cheap. But they use it to suck you in to get reapir work. They charge way more than other shops that are *just down the street* and recommend repairs that really don't need to be done (my serpentine belt was just fine, thanks). Anyway, it's hard to turn down a $25 oil change and tire rotation, but it takes for ever, they have bad hours, and they also are NOT the people to go to to get your car fixed! read more

This particular repair in my opinion was challenging and could easily have gone sideways because of the age of the vehicle and the amount rust that had accumulated. Went in to get a new tire. They said it would be an hour wait, so we left the flat tire on the rim with them, and drove home on the spare. They called an hour later and said the new tire was ready and we could come back to have it mounted. We got there and waited, and waited, and waited, and they didn't move our car into the bays and we asked them to give us the tire and we'd put it on ourselves. "Sorry, just a couple of minutes, we'll put it on." We waited another fifteen minutes and then demanded the tire, paid, and left to put it on ourselves. They will never get another cent of our business and I hope you'll decide against going there. read more

I wish I could give them zero stars. Worst place ever. Not only did they try to make me spend 450 dollars that I did not need to spend when they lifted my car they bent the fender near my passager door. They broke off a screw and decided not to re bolt it down at all so I have to figure out how to remove this busted screw. I also now all of a sudden have a oil leak after just getting my oil changed through them. On top of that I had too much oil in there so they probly blew a gasket!!! I had a great experience as a first-time customer here. I am new to the area and just needed an oil change. The guy at the front desk was polite and courteous on the phone and in-person, and I liked that he already knew what coupon to use for the oil change and tire rotation combo without having to pull it up on my phone. The manager was great as well, and they had me in and out of there in under an hour. No one tried to oversell me on anything, and they provided fast and efficient service. I went here for an emergency exhaust repair last year. They seemed professional enough, the guy working the desk was polite, and the mechanic who did the work was friendly and seemed to know what he was doing... he even let me walk out in the service bay and pointed some stuff out. They replaced the resonator (part of the exhaust system in between the catalytic converter and the muffler) and things worked okay for about 6 months until I found out that they completely mangled my exhaust system. They had bolted the resonator and muffler back on so that the tailpipe was jammed up against the bumper (it is supposed to have 2-3 inches of clearance). It didn't take long to melt through the bumper all the way through and start rattling against the frame... although I didn't realize at first what was causing the whole back end of my car to rattle and shake, so the problem went on for a while. So now I have to pay to have a real mechanic fix what these guys did wrong. Not worth it! read more

These people think they are the smartest. Charge money literally for everything. I came to get done my brakes adjusted, got adjusted only one part and was asked to pay for whole thing. When I refused and walked away, Overheard one of the mechanics swearing at me. Zero rating is what you guys deserve. Update: I filed a complaint case. I was told that they would get back to me. I was quoted $500.00 for new front rotors and pads on my 4Runner, and this was with a $30.00 "discount." I decided to shop for a better value, because obviously $500.00 seemed incredibly steep! I went to Auto Zone and purchased lifetime pad and rotors for $106.00. I found a shop just around the corner that quoted me $115.00 to install them. After tax..I was out the door for a grand total of $230.00!!! Needless to say, I'll NEVER do business with this Durham Midas location again! read more

worst place for an oil change This is place of one of the worst places to go to get an oil change done. I went there and got an oil change done, when I drove the car the next day, surprisingly I saw my oil light blinking and I had to stop the car immediately due to its heavy noise. I had to get my car towed to the mechanic by wasting my complete day. The mechanic told me the problem was the result of oil change as the worker left the old gasket which was reason for oil being completely drained out of the car. The owner was so rude when I complained about what happened and refused to pay even for the towing charges. These people do not have right to play with cars and lives of people with their negligence. I would rather pay extra bucks to the dealer to next things done than going to places like this.... Bottom Line: AVOID this place if you want be safe and your car to be in good condition. read more

I will never take my vehicle back. I use their coupons for oil changes in the past, but had a service issue with my car and figured I'd take it to them to look at. I experienced THREE real problems. 1- I dropped the car off to be diagnosed. They called me back I was told what was wrong and they quoted me the part to be over $240 and three hours labor! It was a problem I'm familiar with and have addressed in the past, so I said no thanks, ordered the part online for $90 and easily replaced it myself in less than an hour. 2- In order to diagnose the problem, they had to take off part of the dash board. When I got back, they had left the dashboard off! They didn't even bother putting it back for me, just left it in the floor. I knew it would have to come off anyways, so I just drove it home and got the part. 3- THEY DIAGNOSED INCORRECTLY. THey only had it part right, jumping to conclusions. I replaced the part, but there was another problem. I took it somewhere else and they identified the problem immediately Not only would I have paid 3X the actually price of the part and three hours labor, but that wasn't even the entire problem. Now I know mechanics will sometime build in labor time to identify other problems, but it seemed unprofessional. I'll go somewhere else for oil changes in the future now. I've grown up around cars all my life and this was by far the least impressive experience I've ever had with mechanics. read more

These guys bested both Lexus and Toyota Service Departments that I visited before ending up at this Midas. I had a stripped bolt on the transmission pan of my Lexus and neither the Lexus or Toyota Dealers would simply fix what was broke. I rarely use "quick lube" places for repairs, but frustration drove me to Midas where I have actually never been. I explained my problem to the guys in the shop and before I was done, they were ready to pull my car in, so they could take a look. Long story short, they extracted the broken bolt and replaced it for me in about 30 minutes. The guys even took the time to clean the transmission pan, as it had a leak due to the broken bolt. The cost was a drop in the bucket in comparison to what the dealers wanted. Next time I'm in an automotive bind, I will just call these guys. read more

I took my BMW to another place and Midas told me that they would love to have my business but that there was a place where I could take it to that would be better. They saved me thousands of dollars. AVOID THIS PLACE!!! Like the other guy here, I wish I could rate it a 0! I took my girlfriend's car here to get her soft brakes checked out because it was right around the corner. They told her she needed $1100 in new rotors, pads and tires. The manager actually tried to scare her into getting her car fixed there saying that he wished they could let him take away her keys and not let her drive because it was so dangerous she might cause a wreck and hurt somebody!! Thank goodness I was there, what a horrible way to try to run a business. We took the car to University Shell on Hillsborough and had a completely different experience. They put her car on the rack, and before even inspecting her brakes found the problem: her brake line was corroded and was constantly leaking a bit of fluid. He showed us that her rotors, pads and tires were all fine. The total cost to repair was $130 (a far cry from 1100!!) and we came back an hour later with perfectly performing brakes again.
