Check engine light came on my dashboard and I needed smog check to renew my plates so I took it into Midas because a friend recommended them and I wanted to support another local business. Total mistake on my part. They quoted me $875 for parts, labor, and smog certificate which broke down to $509 for parts, $90 smog check, and $276 for labor. I found the oem part needed for $105 from the dealership and considered doing it myself however I have a knee injury and was crunched for time. I explained this to the owner and he then told me there was another option which would repair the hose instead of replacing it and it would only cost $285 out the door to do the repair and smog check and it could be done by the next afternoon. I agreed and my fiance offered to pick the car up the next day since she worked near by. When she arrived home the next day she handed me a receipt for $338 for the repair. No smog check and the light was still on. I was told to drive the car 50 miles to complete the drive cycle and the light would go off and then I could bring it in for smog check. 3 weeks, 395 miles driven, 1 tow truck haul, and 2 separate visits to the DMV for day passes because my plates were now expired as well as 2 additional visits to Midas left me up in the air with no guarantee. Suddenly the shop owner didn't remember the smog check being included in the original price and I was told that even if I paid for it they wouldn't do it because it would not pass and suggested I continued to drive it more and eventually it would complete the drive cycle so that a smog check could be done. I needed a car because I had a trip out of state which I planned on driving for Christmas. I had a friend make me an offer to buy the car from me for a fair price so I took it and used the money towards a purchase on a newer vehicle because I was out of time and didn't want to chance driving with expired plates. Well my trip came and went a few weeks ago and the newer vehicle I purchased turned out to be a lemon as well. I thankfully got my money back from that situation which is the only good thing to happen from this. Here's the nail in the coffin moment that made me want to write this review. I spoke to my friend who bought the car from me last week and he had some interesting news for me. He said there was no patch or repair to be found anywhere on the hose that was said to be repaired and the reason for the check engine light as well as the incomplete drive cycle was a bad relay switch connected to the Secondary Air Intake /oxygen sensors. After replacing the relay switch the light on the dash went off and the car passed Smog immediately and drives better now than ever. I have since then read several reviews from other people claiming they were overcharged for work that was never completed or unnecessary. I just wanted to add that the owner of this Midas was very friendly and courteous up until he received payment. From that point on he was rude and not interested in completing the service I paid for. I did pay his shop a visit to air my grievances about this situation but he wasn't there to speak to. Instead I was greeted by a couple of Hispanic men who said they were his mechanics and they were all standing around in the shop drinking beers at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon. This is my second time visiting Midas in Laguna. 1st time . I arrived 5 minutes before opening without an appointment. My '98 Tacoma needed brake and suspension work, I knew it was going to be expensive but I bought it a year back and intended to keep for a long time. Avi is passionate about cars and he shared how his relative had the same Tacoma decked out and it made me feel confident for him to work on it. The parts overall and with labor were less than I expected and he said he can have everything by 10am. He showed me how bad my shocks were afterwards , almost like 'I can't believe you been driving on these' LOL! When I drove off , it felt like a different vehicle. From a wobbly truck , to feeling like a tight turning go kart . The 2nd visit I showed up again at opening 8am without an appointment . This time for a basic oil change. Eric was opening the shop; he is very nice and humbly took my request . He said he needed to take care of 1 vehicle and would start about 30 minutes or so. I got breakfast down the street at Husky Boy's and walked the beach . When I returned , my truck was finished. Avi was in the shop and helped me check out. We talked about mechanics and cars awhile and he explained a lot of things about why racing cars need premium oil , how his knowledge was learnt hands on thru racing, and his future old school Corolla build . I appreciated him sharing his knowledge and enjoyed our conversation. I used to drive inland to Walmart for basic oil and tire rotation, but now I'm coming here for my regular maintenance. Amazing service, came in with no appointment as I was having an emergency issue with my car and didn't seem safe to drive. The gentleman fixed it in 4 minutes and I'm not exaggerating. I park on North Coast Hwy because I don't have an assigned parking space. 2 months ago, my red convertible Z28 was parked between Jasmine and Myrtle on the beach side of Coast Hwy. It was hit at about 4 p.m. by a 72 year old man in a Mitsubishi Mirage. Car was pushed 15 feet. I heard the crash from my apt and just knew. It was totaled. 4 weeks later, I purchased a 1991 red convertible RS. Parked in a different spot. About a week ago, the manager at the Beach House Hotel asked what happened to my car. Went out to look. Somebody had hit and run during the night, and my RS had a flat tire on the back driver's side, and the driver's side mirror was scrunched. I had it towed to the Midas store at 1251 N. Coast Hwy. Abas took care of me! I got 4 new tires (Abas said they were the original 1991 tires. The car lived in Palm Springs and had 17k miles on it) and the car is almost as good as new. And it was way under what I expected to pay! I cannot say enough about Abas and the Laguna Beach Midas store. I was treated with respect, and so was my car! I highly recommend you visit Abas at Midas. They provide a large variety of services. The owner (Abbas) answered the phone right away, was a great communicator on the estimated time (and accurate) to get in and complete an oil change while I was visiting Newport Beach on vacation. I suggested the breaks and/or other items might need changing soon. His Mechanic did a thorough check as part of their oil change service and they were very honorable and trustworthy in saying everything was in good shape and not to replace anything. I also suggested we might want to change the transmission fluid and again Abbas said not to touch it because there's still a 100k warranty on my drivetrain. I called on Thursday evening before closing to check and see if I could come in Friday morning for an oil change and diagnostics. After speaking with the Juan on the phone, he told me he had 3 people "showing up at 8am" insinuating that he was going to deal with everyone on a first come first serve basis. No problem. I told him I'd be there before 8. Next day rolls around and I show up at 7:45. No ones there. Fair enough, I'm early. 8am. No one. 810. No one. 820. No one. At 8:25 he opens up the shop and I go in to talk to him about my truck. I was not even upset he was late. Stuff happens. I did get upset after he was a dick. Not only did he tell me that he couldn't service my car because he had "other cars sitting there" (no one had come in before me or after me and no other customers were there), but he could have told me the night before about the "other cars sitting there" and I wouldn't have come in. He then remembers we spoke on the phone and precededs to tell me that he DOESNT open at 8am (see pic) and that he DOESNT take appointments (see pic). I felt like I was taking crazy pills at that point and I was heated. I don't know if this guy is a manager, owner, or what, but he clearly isn't trying to get or keep new business. Well it's raining - pouring - and my truck battery is snoring. Unfortunately my battery died in the heart of laguna beach hill streets - without AAA in pouring rain. The workout getting to Midas was intense but well worth it. The owner (Abas) had one of his employees drive me back to my truck in his personal car in order to jump it and bring it back to their shop for a battery replacement. $150 dollars later I'm back on the road I'm less than an hour from start to finish. Honestly, I love this place. I have a '02 Ford Taurus, and I got it in '06. I didn't get it from a dealer and I never was very farmiliar with the local ones. Anyway, I started going here because it's only a few blocks from my house (yay!) so I never have to worry about dropping it off and picking it up. They always do a great job and it usually takes LESS than what they estimate, which is great! I mainly get regularly scheduled oil changes and stuff (basic Midas package) and only runs me about $30. They fix my breaks all the time too, and don't ever screw me! I recently had an issue with them; they needed to be replaced, but I got them about 6 months ago...He called me up and said, "it's under warranty and you got it here, so it's just labor costs" and that was such a relief! I didn't even know they were that bad! I took my Taurus to a Ford dealership because I wanted to get a major service done. I have a friend who bought her Mustang at Capistrano Ford, so I took it there. (side note: I'm going to go rate them next). They seemed nice enough. I was wrong...They said I have leaks and this and that and the whole thing (before the 90,000 mile service, mind you) would cost around $2,000.00. HOLY CRAPOLA. No thanks, that's half that car is worth. I got normal services done at midas continually, and they fixed one of them CHEAP. Recently took my Taurus in to get the 90-something service finally. They found the big leak...yikes. Turns out they said pretty much the same thing as Ford did. There was a leak in the transmission and the leak itself isn't anything serious, but to do the service they'd have to manually go into the transmission by hand (instead of with their machine and stuff). The entire service, leaks fixed, oil changed, filters changed, etc. cost me about $400, total. That's with tax and labor! =D they always do an amazing job here. ***Bottom line: They treat you as they should. They care about your car! They won't screw you over, like a dealership might. Yeah, labor costs a bit, but it costs about the same as any other shop. Every time I go in, they remember small things about my car, in fact when I was leaving last time, the manager (knows so so much!) said "I know your car really well by now, I'll go in to check when you come in next time to make sure everything is in place and the leak is gone. You're car should be running really well now for you!" Such great service and SO RELIABLE! They always fit me in Saturday mornings. 5 STARS for everything! read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I walked in with all females asking if they could check my tires because my light came on and the owner told us no that he has 3 cars that are up on the rack and he wouldn't even put air in the tires because he wouldn't make money off of us. I've never experienced such rude behavior from a owner, I'd be embarrassed and disgusted with myself if I was him. Do not ever go there if you ever need car help get stuck on the street before you ever deal with horrible of people. A stranger would be more helpful than those people. read more

This past Thursday I decided enough was enough and brought my 2008 Ford Edge in for some much needed air conditioning work and also for an issue with clicking in the left front wheel while turning. By 3PM Juan (Very friendly BTW) called me back to explain what I needed. Turns out that the clicking in the wheel was due to a worn axel and bearing assembly. The intermittent a/c issue was due to one of the two cooling fans being burned out. He said I could safely drive with one fan if I kept an eye on the temperature gauge. But the axel need to be replaced. So I decided I could limp around with intermittent a/c for a few more weeks, and gave the authorization for the axel work and Juan had my car ready to go by 5PM that day. Now for the good part. The very next day I had been driving all over the place with a/c on and it seemed to be working ok - the weather had cooled a bit. Then I arrive back home at about 2:30 and parked in my driveway with engine and a/c on while I checked a few things on my phone. The next thing I know I hear grumbling from the engine and look up to see steam spewing out. The second of two fans let go and it overheated! I called Juan right away and explained what had happened. He said he could order a new fan assembly and have it by 4 PM. Now all I needed to do what get my car back down to Midas, which is about three miles away from home. Well, I waited about an hour to let the engine temp cool back down and limped it back to Midas. I got there around 3:45 and the mechanic started taking the old fan assembly out while waiting for the new one to arrive. I left for home and waited for Juan to call to come pick up the car. He called by 5:30 and said it was ready! All I have to say is that I've never experienced that level of courtesy or service from any other Laguna Beach automotive garage. I will be back for sure! Always ask to speak to Juan-he is the reason this Midas is the best. Juan won't do the work if you don't need it-he will send me home rather than do something just to take my money. I took my car to Midas because I had a very large copper pipe stuck in my tire and it was the closest automotive place I could find that I thought could help me. After arriving I had to try and find someone to help me. Once I found someone, they inspected the tire and said they couldn't help me. While they were kind, it was not the answer I needed to hear on a Monday after work. However, they did have time for a lady in a very fancy Mercedes that had just pulled in after me. Finally, after navigating my way out of their very cramped parking lot, I was on my way to a different place with my leaking tire. I will not be visiting this Midas again. read more
