After a really awful experience at the Jeep dealership in Inwood, NY (Forgot to change my oil) Mark & Chris went above and beyond to save me money on my oil change and brake change. They were fair and thorough with the work performed on my vehicle. They even did a temporary fix for my muffler to ensure I'd make it back to New York safely since I can't afford to get it fixed at the moment. As a solo female traveler I do feel a bit safer knowing there are mechanics out there that aren't trying to take advantage of me. read more

They have always been honest, fair, and helpful, and sensitive when we have been tight with money so they would advise us accordingly. I wish I could rate this place 0 stars. Whatever you do, DO NOT bring your car here. I took my Audi in to have snow tires changed over back in November. While my car was in, the technician called me to inform me my car was due for an oil change, and said he could take care of that for me. He also proceeded to mention a laundry list of other things "wrong" with my car, including an "overdue timing belt" - which I had JUST replaced the year before. I should have known I was getting scammed after that phone call. Fast forward 2 days and a drive to Boston later. My oil light came on (odd, since it was just changed) - I figured the technician forgot to reset the indicator, but took it to a mechanic anyway. As it turns out, the technician botched my oil change so badly that my car was leaking (no, spilling) oil the entire drive to Boston. The mechanic told me I was lucky my engine didn't seize up. $220 later, my car was fixed and I was on my way. I promptly returned to Midas with my invoice to discuss the issue with the manager. After dodging me for over 2 weeks, the owner sent me a letter in the mail (not even the courtesy of a phone call) and attached a memo from 2010 stating that the model of my car could potentially have oil filter issues after an oil change. He stated that was the reason for what happened to my car - not the service I received. I have been brining the vehicle in for regular oil changes since I purchased it in 2005 and never ONCE had an issue. Now I'm out $220 to fix my car, plus the original $40 for the oil change. I will never again bring my car to a Midas and I have left reviews and told all my friends, co-workers and acquaintances to steer clear of this location. I was scammed!! Long story short I was told my car was unsafe to even drive the few miles home and that it needed the $900 fix immediately. I was too shocked at what started out so small and became a very expensive fix to make a decision other than to risk the drive home. The second and third opinions I received from two other sources reassured me that my car was very safe and in fact in really good condition despite it's age. I ended up fixing the problem for about 1/3 of the price Midas gave me. I felt taken advantage of and I will not be back to Midas. I have since taken my car to Sterling Motorwerks also in South Burlington, you can tell them that Squirrel Stash Nuts sent you. :) read more

I highly recommend going somewhere else for a yearly car inspection, especially if you have an older vehicle. I recently took my 12 year old car in for inspection because they had a $25 special. Even though I was experiencing no issues with the vehicle, it was failed for brakes, muffler, and control arm bushings. They quoted me $2000 to replace the muffler and control arms (because you can't replace the bushings alone). Then they said I would need to pay for a separate brake inspection to determine what needed to be done for brakes! Fortunately I have some handy friends who were able to patch the muffler and replace the brake rotors, pads, and control arms, which I could order on Amazon for a fraction of the cost that Midas quoted me. After five frustrating days of wrestling with rusty bolts (a few of which broke and needed to be ordered) we had everything back together for about $200. We took it to a different mechanic who said that the control arms/bushings never needed to be replaced and that the car had not even been entered into the DMV inspection database, a requirement if the vehicle is deemed "unsafe". Basically, I could have skipped the entire exhausting process of control arm replacement by just going straight to a different place. Needless to say, I'm frustrated. The one good thing I can say is that they are certainly thorough. If you have a problem with your car, I am sure they will find it. If you don't have a problem with your car, they will still probably still find something to be worked on. I feel scammed, and the whole incident has me wondering if I was unfairly targeted because I don't look like I would know better, seeing as I am a female in my early 20's. Even though the inspection with the different mechanic was more expensive ($80) I will definitely go there first next year. read more

Hooray for free price quotes. We needed a new muffler. Midas was going to charge around $400. They told us that the tailpipe wasn't in stock in town and they would have to customize it....we decided to get a second opinion since we only paid $500 for the van and are short on cash. Next place we went to charged us $230...surprise...they didn't have to customize a tailpipe since it was in stock in Burlington (same day as the MIDAS visit). Hooray for second opinions. Extremely disappointed in the service here!! I scheduled an oil change and I was there for over 2 hours!! The gentleman came to me after an hour and a half, and told me that the washer plug was damaged and they did not have any washers that would fit my oil plug. I was in a hurry to get out of there and didn't know what exactly to do. The man left no option but to put the damaged washer back on my car, but the oil would leak if we did so.. don't you think a place like this should have extra parts that they need to do oil changes? So I get home and my car is definitely leaking oil? let's just say I will NEVER be back to this establishment.. also, oil and go in Essex is $34 for synthetic oil and Midas charges $75 for synthetic oil. I brought a 2007 VW in excellent condition to this Midas to be inspected and they gave me a laundry list of things that needed to be fixed. In total they said I needed over $1,300 worth of work - including replacing things like a "slightly torn windshield wiper" and defective struts. I happen to know a little bit about cars so I knew these things weren't necessary. I took the car to a reputable place the following week and it passed inspection no problem. I recommend you get a second opinion if the people at Midas tell you your car needs work done. read more

This specific Midas has never failed us, and we've been lots of other places that have. They are kind, attentive, treat you like a person, and explain things in layman's terms. They are honest in their recommendations and they do good work. This particular instance we had a flat tire and were supposed to leave for vacation. They got us right in and replaced it. They saved our trip (family of 6). Other times I have had to wait for the car with my baby in the waiting room, they have always treated me and other customers very well. This is the worst service experience I've yet encountered. Midas mis-diagnosed the problem and ordered the wrong part. After sitting in the waiting room for an hour they finally told me they had the wrong part. They would order the right one and get back to me that day. They NEVER called back. Two days later my car died on the road and had to be towed to VW. It needed a new transmission. Midas had no clue what was wrong. It is inexcusable to not followup with a customer when they depend on your repairs. Perhaps they were hoping I would just go away. Yup, that's exactly what I did. I can't say enough about this Midas location! I was driving back to Maine after a long vacation and my engine died while I was on the highway. After the tow, the manager immediately took an initial look to make a diagnosis. He very honestly and tenderly gave me the bad news and thoroughly explained my options and helped me work through the problem. I knew to trust them because their recommendation didn't involve giving more business to them. I strangely felt like part of their family and they seemed genuinely sympathetic toward my situation and helpful in every way imaginable. I just had a great experience at this Midas location. My headlight went out this evening and I couldn't find anyone to replace it for me. I dropped by Midas and even though they had just closed, they opened their doors to me and quickly replaced my bulb. Chris and the rest of the guys helped me out. my appointment was at 1130 with only one other person in the waiting room. he had been there 45 min. before when i made the appointment. my car went up the lift in seconds. then i waited for an hour and 15 min.. no one checked in with me , only the lady at the desk had a mask on as staff wondered in and out with out one . after the hour and 15 a maskless person showed me five photos or my care under side . no work none. when asked why , i was told they were busy. this place is a service and pandemic nightmare.i give it zero stars. read more

This particular branch of Midas is not worth even the one star which I have given them. I recently repaired my Jeep Cherokee before having it brought out to Vermont. It was given a clean bill of health and drives like a champion. I took the car into Midas for the simple purpose of getting it inspected (so that it is legal here). In under 2 hours they had determined that two ball joints were defective, that the coolant system was damaged and that there was no way that the jeep would pass inspection. They wrote up a quote for $800.00 and said that this price reflected the cheapest available parts. BULLS#!^. A quick search of the auto parts on my phone showed that this was also a lie. I asked them to specifically show me the defective parts and explain to me how they are broken. They showed me but SURPRISE, there was nothing actually wrong with them... It's an absolute joke that I had to pay $40.00 dollars for them to LIE TO MY FACE. The car inspected without any problems the next morning. Do not visit Midas South Burlington for any reason. They have created a cottage industry based upon sodomizing non-mechanics. read more

Nice employees but so overpriced. Took 4 hours and $200 to fix an outlet in my vehicle. Was told to come by in an hour on the phone to pick up the car, I show up and they say oh she's here now we can tell her her options. Couldn't of called and told me? I then had to wait another half hour for them to actually do the task I asked them to do when I dropped it off HOURS before. Didn't expect something that small to take up half of my day. Have had services from here before and cost me an arm and a leg. Will be going elsewhere from now on. read more

The staff seem like good people but the owner is a douchbag. Way overcharged and instead of apologies after 3rd try of fixing something that was not an issue until I brought it in got an arrogant attitude and deflection. Never again! I am sick that I paid them $2500 in December for work on brakes and another $1800 for a car that worked fine to get them to pass my inspection on a car that apparently worked fine before taking it in. Several calls over course of 1 1/2 weeks with climbing bill and car broken IN shop. They kept emphasizing discounts they gave me which were $2.00 or $4.00 on labor for things like light bulb replacement I usually do myself. What an insult! read more

Talk about great customer service. I stopped by Midas in South Burlington because the Honda was making noise when I accelerated. On the way here, I thought it was the heat shield. Then, last night the oil light started coming on. Uh oh. I stopped by this morning to see if they could help. He said they couldn't fit me in for service, but could check my oil level. Turns out that's all it was. He added a couple quarts, and sent me in my way. Wouldn't even take money for his time or the oil. Customer service is still alive. At least in Vermont. Great place for oil changes, the staff is friendly and the waiting area is nice. For anything else potentially bigger I would go elsewhere. They have now twice tried to convince me to spend significant amounts of money on issues that have turned out to be either non-existent or not at all as serious as they made it out to be. read more

Honestly, take your business elsewhere! The inspection on my husband's car had expired and he desperately needed an inspection. This was the only shop that could fit us in the following day. I took it in on my own as the hubs had to work. Midas did their complementary once-over, came out and told me: 1) Headgasket leaking badly 2) Left-front strut leaking 3) Low oil and low coolant (hubs had just had an oil change a little more than a month ago) 4) Timing belt is cracked (car has only 71,000 miles. Normal live-span of timing belt is at least 100,000 miles) 5) Upper radiator hose leaking 6) Rear brake lights, tail lights and parking lights out (we know about this as hubs got pulled over for that and the officer told him his inspection has expired) The Midas guy said the cracked timing belt can be left alone for the time being, but the strut must be fixed for the inspection to go through. It was going to cost $906.71. I didn't buy their story so I declined their service and drove it to our usual mechanic and begged for an inspection. He went through the car, fixed the rear lights and passed the inspection. He went through all the problems Midas said the car had and found nothing wrong with the car at all other than the rear lights (he wouldn't have passed the inspection if the strut was damaged in any way)! Never again will I go to Midas even for an oil change! read more

I was unfortunate to need some exhaust repairs done on October 9, 2015, during a vacation in New England. It was a Friday afternoon and I tried a couple of places but couldn't get in. Midas decided that they could squeeze me in. With the car on the hoist I was told they could replace a gasket and two spring bolts being "careful" not to damage the rest of the exhaust. I was quoted $197. U. S. funds, ($275. Canadian.) I later find out it's a fifteen minute job at best and shouldn't have cost more than $70. U.S. Very disappointed that we were taken advantage of and would like to suggest that perhaps the employees could wear masks to alert potential customers to cover their asses! Run, don't walk form these shysters!! *An update to my experience. Yesterday, I received a cheque from Midas for $86.50 to cover an hours labour. (They had a chance to review the video tapes and determined that I was correct.) This takes a little of the "sting" out of the price I paid, but I still would not recommend their service. read more

On Saturday, February 13, 2016 my family was enroute from Pennsylvania to a ski trip in Canada when our brakes in our Chevy Surburban failed. In sub-freezing temperatures, Susan and the Midas team agreed fit us in despite a busy schedule, diagnosis the problem and order the necessary parts. While we needed to get rental cars to proceed on our journey, her team went above and beyond and we were quickly back on the road. Our car was ready to go when we returned the following week and they even had it started when we arrived to pick it up. Kudos to the Midas Team in Burlington and especially to Susan. read more

After I recently went in for an oil change my maintenance oil light went on. When I checked the oil, the indicator was BONE DRY. My car is under 150,000 miles and I didn't drive enough to have the oil burn off. Thanks Midas. You could've wrecked my engine. Good thing the issue was caught in time. Never again. After getting a quote for other work they suggested was needed, I went somewhere else for a second quote. Not only was the quote way lower at the second place for some of the work, but on one "needed" work per Midas, the second place couldn't even find what was wrong! read more

Last night my Toyota Highlander wouldn't start. It was parked next door to this Midas Center, so I called to see what they thought. The lights were all strong, but the starter was making a whirring noise when I turned the key. The battery was only 6 months old, so it didn't make sense that it was dead. I worked with Darren at Midas and he offered to go and try to jump it before calling AAA for a tow. It started and he ran it through their complimentary diagnostics, which identified a lot of corrosion and battery drain. When I told him the age of the battery and that I bought it at Advanced Auto, Darren said that it may be under warranty, and that since Midas works with Advanced, that perhaps they could credit the cost of the new battery they would install. Advanced Auto told me they had to test the battery themselves. Darren got the car started, and advised me to keep it running at AA until they made their determination. Despite the fact that Darren had just walked in with his warm lunch and cold drink, he made sure I was all set and pulled the car up front. When I went to pay him for his time, he politely told me there was NO charge. Sorry for the length, but I wanted to give credit where it's due, and I will DEFINITELY be back for future issues!! read more

Very similar to other reviews. Took it in for an inspection, which they did for"free", then quoted me about $1700 in repairs. Took it to another place for a second opinion, and they found nothing wrong. I feel so cheated and taken advantage of, and am appalled they are still open. read more

Horribly overpriced. Quoted me over 600 bucks for a re-manufactured alternator that is $230 on line. Wanted over $1100 for a Bosch new alternator that is around 480 on line. Run, don't walk, away from these guys. read more

OVER PRICED!!! I was in a really tight spot needed a car battery with the cold weather killing my current one. Midas told me it would cost about $300... not even with the upgrade for a better battery. I ended up getting the replacement at Sears Auto down the road the same day for $140. My own experience was also nothing compared to a couple over-charging horror stories I have also heard from friends. :( read more

Absolutely, Fu-huh-huh-huuuuuck this place. Brought my car in for an oil change. They came out with a list of big fixes. I'm a delivery driver, so I know my car gets beat up, but most of what they were talking about was unnecessary at the time. I was told the car wouldn't make it out of the lot, let alone through the week. (By the way, 3 weeks and 2000 miles later, still runs fine.) I was told I needed new tires because my tires were "completely bald" as in no tread. Tread is something you can see and feel for, and while the tires weren't ideal, there was plenty of tread left on the tires. I imagine I can get another 2 years out of them. Then they also said my wipers blades were shot, so I should buy a new pair of wipers from them. No, I should buy a new pair of "wiper blades" and save $35 on completely useless parts. On top of that, whichever grease monkey was fucking with the wipers in the first place messed up the motor so now the driver's side wiper doesn't work at all. I've told many a place to suck it in my time, but I wish no place would suck it more than this piece of shit business right here. read more

I brought my car in for a simple wheel swap and state inspection. Upon dropping off my car, I started to head home, but remembered I had some paperwork in the passenger seat that I needed. I ran back to the shop and found a mechanic ripping my car around in the parking lot down the street. When I confronted him about it, he claimed he was just "feeling it out." I was not pleased, but I ignored it. After getting my car back, I started noticing a very rough idle happening every once in awhile, like nothing I had ever experienced with my car. I called Midas and explained the problem and the fact that I had caught their mechanic joy riding my car. They told me nothing they had done would have caused that and that I should go to the dealership. I am currently getting the problem diagnosed with Subaru and have contacted Midas Consumer Relations. I plan to have Midas cover the repairs if something has indeed been messed up due to their recklessness. read more

I have taken my car to this location twice for simple repairs. Both times they took hours longer than promised and tried to talk me into expensive and unnecessary repairs. I went for a second and third opinion of their recommended repairs and both mechanics disagreed with the recommendations I received from Midas. They want you to think that it is unsafe to drive your car and pressure you into spending more money than necessary. There are many better choices in the area. read more

I was overdue for an inspection and was pleased that Midas was available to do it quickly. I dropped off the car just before closing and the next day ~3:30 pm got a call from Les saying it needed a license plate light and side marker lights in order to pass inspection. Also my battery was weak, yada yada. BUT...to install these light bulbs it was going to cost me an extra $70 on top of the inspection...HUH? I right away knew this was ridiculous so I declined his kind offer (NOT!) to install these lights for me, picked my car up that night and questioned his quote in-person. He said they charged 2/10 of an hour for labor (~$20) and the side marker lights were something like $9.99 a piece. The license plate was a cheap bulb..about $1. I was doing the math in my head..this would amount to what...at most $41?? It still doesn't add up to $70. Les had little to back up his quote. I paid for the inspection, left without my sticker and said I'd be back in the morning Immediately, I drive to the auto parts store and purchased the 3 CHEAP $2.50 bulbs (all the same, not different ones) and installed them myself, in the dark (with a little help from Auto Parts store guy) in LESS than 5 minutes. Again, I spent $7.50 and 5 minutes tops to install these CHEAP light bulbs myself when Les was hoping I'd be stupid enough to fall for his $60+ CON. Sorry...didn't fall for it! The next day I walked in and told him the side marker lights were the cheap bulbs, not the expensive ones as he said (in front of other customers!). He had nothing to say. The moral of the story is to by all means utilize Midas' services for straightforward things like inspection...but QUESTION all claims and quotes. This $70 for 3 light bulbs is just a small example of what it seems like a fishy business....just imagine what they're doing on major repairs!! read more

I have been bringing my vehicles to Midas in South Burlington for nearly five years. I have experienced nothing but excellent personable service in all of my visits. I have had my oil changes, inspections, and all other types of repairs done to my vehicles here. The service is great, the staff both at the front and in the garage are extremely knowledgeable. They take their time to ensure that I understand what the issues are, if any, with my car. The service staff takes me right out to my car on the lift to show me what they are talking about and to explain what they are going to be doing. I like that they are exceptionally thorough and always check with me before doing any extra work whatsoever. I don't know much about cars and this Midas has never taken advantage of or exploited that like has happened at other places I have been in the past. If something is due for routine maintenance but the part is still in good condition and doesn't need to be changed yet, then they show it to me and leave it up to me to decide whether I want to replace it or not. I appreciate this and it is a main reason I continue to come here year after year. I have also noted that the staff doesn't change that often. Their turnover rate with employees seems exceedingly low--this speaks volumes. It is nice to come here and see familiar faces working with me and working on my car. This Midas has also worked with me financially as much as they can. As a single parent in college it is a great help and I am forever grateful for them doing as much as possible to help me out. I have yet to have a bad experience here, and again, I have been coming here for almost five years. This is my sole place of oil changes, inspections, and repairs. I recommend Midas in South Burlington to anybody in the area or anybody passing through. I can guarantee that you will be satisfied with the service to both you and your vehicle. read more
