This was our first time visiting the Middle Ages Brewery, but it definitely won't be our last! We purchased tickets online to watch our favorite local band "Infinity" perform their inaugural concert at this venue. The concert stage is upstairs, and the check-in was fast and simple at tge door. There is a spacious bar area, and the stage is in another room to the left. The stage is elevated, allowing for great viewing of the band. There's plenty of room for people to dance and hang out in front of the stage, and some seating along the outside edges of the room. The acoustics of the room were great. The bathrooms are large and clean. We did not try any of their food, as we had eaten before we arrived at the venue. We're looking forward to attending more live music shows at this establishment. read more

You can't go wrong with the original craft brewery in Syracuse. So many great beers have been brewed here since the 90's and they continue to pump out so many more, pushing the hop profiles every time. A terrific venue for live music and beer. Free parking, handicap accessible (beer hall is on the 2nd floor) via an elevator, and tables with benches. It's been a while since I stopped down for some beers in their tasting room, so I was surprised to see a wide range of styles on tap. I tried five of them. The only one which was a swing and a miss was the Belgian Blonde. Too hoppy, thing body and slightly tangy. The others were the Irish Red, Dark Lager, ESB and the Apricot Ale. These were all spot on. Be very cautious whendoing business with this company. They asked me to host an event at their venue as a live music promoter and quickly started showing behavior that resembles "Bill padding" which is highly illegal . This means they were trying to bill me for hidden factors and only explained once I questioned their request. They tried to bill me $850 yo use their line dancing coach for 45min (at most) of work. When I declined that I had my own that travels with my event and also shared that the average pay for a coach is $100/1-2 hours they then shared that the total also included $750 fee for finding vendors for the event. Typical, an event charges vendors to hold a booth at a venue $100-$250 per booth per event (average). I caught on to what they were trying to do( find ways to steal money from what I am owed each event), I then had my lawyer rewrite my contract so that if forces venues to itemize every factor I am billed for. The venue saw that I caught on to their possible illegal behavior( and my contract now stops venues from charging the vendors to hold a booth then postulating me as well for them finding the vendors which is double dipping) the venue quickly backed out of the event. This is highly illegal behavior so I had my lawyer rewrite my event contract to protect me from this criminal behavior and they instantly backed out of the event that they contacted me in request to host in the first place due to the large attendance my events hold. The individuals connected to this activity are Charley Orlando, Matt Vogelsang, Isaac Rubenstein and Erie Events. They later thought it would be professional to CC me on an event email that they are confirming/hosting an event the exact same date that my event was supposed to take place with all the same participants but a different name than my LLC. This new event is also manipulation by using the name "Country Fest" which is another LLC owned by a different individual (not them). Be sure to have a strong contract and and a great lawyer if deciding to collaborate with this bar and their colleagues. read more

I have started going to shows at Middle Ages and it is such a great time. Unfortunately I can't drink much of the alcohol they have on tap, except for the Double vision cider from Down East they seem to carry sometimes but always run out. My friends say their beer is "okay", not their favorite but also not the worst. Also know going in that there is no food here so stop somewhere else before you go to a show. The bartenders are very nice and always seem super into the music which is fun. The space is pretty big which is surprising when you go into this industrial building and up the stairs. Could easily see this being a space for a party, wedding, anything. It even had an elevator for accessibility. It tends to be warm up there so keep that in mind. It is a ton of fun! read more

I love it here! I've been here for food, drinks and the live music. I love their event space, their bar area and their outdoor area where there is more seating. I love the array of beers they have available here. I love ordering flights and trying a few beers at a time. If you're looking for great live music, they book a lot of musicians and shows inside and outside. They have a lot of community wide events here too that are very popular. First off, I love a good wheat beer, and their Jester's Nectar is pretty good. A nice brew: balanced, not bitter, and with a good touch of citrus. Very easy drinking. I'd like to come back and try more varieties in the future. Having grown up visiting Renaissance fairs with my mom, I get a kick out of the very aptly named Middle Ages' theme. It seems like this would be a fun place to come and hang out, though obviously that's not something I'd chose to do right now. First time here for an open mic night on a Wednesday (every Wednesday between 6 and 8 PM). Mostly drinks, though you can scarf up some chips or a pre-packaged charcuterie tray. TL;DR: Good selection of in-house beers, excellent staff, wonderful ambiance, and *infinite* menu ***Ambiance*** This place has an unassuming storefront. But that's not a negative and totally adds to the unassuming, casual, no-nonsense ambiance of this place. The entrance features a big wooden door. Heavy and constructed from dark wood that adds to the Middle Ages theme. After opening the massive door, I was almost expecting to see a shadowy dungeon walkway, which was only illuminated by the fire from torches. Unfortunately, the lobby that I stepped into was well-illuminated and not at all dungeonous. They have an open dining space with well-separated tables (for twos and fours) and a mile-long bar. The space was clean and uncluttered. The tables were all wooden and had a dark wood finish, which added to the theme. The beer menu was displayed on the electronic monitors, which to me felt a bit out of place. But I am no Ethane Allen, so WTF do I know. The best feature of the room by far was the rows of taps of beer behind the counter. ***Staff and service*** The only thing better than the beer here is the staff and their hospitality. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the friendly bartender. I wanted to do a beer flight (see pic), and I went into deep (and extended) self-reflection of picking my top 4 beers for that evening. The bartender was polite and friendly and kept his patience during that entire time. Me being a complete ass and a self-absorbed beer-snob, forgot to ask his name (so that I could mention it here). ***Food*** They do not have an on-site kitchen. But they do have some pre-packaged snacks (chips & pretzels) and a fridge with cheese and salami. They also allow patrons to bring their own food or have food delivered to them. I did end up doing both: first, I got some cheese and salami from the fridge and then ordered delivery through DoorDash (restaurant reviewed separately). After seeing me struggling to open the package of salami for 10 minutes, the bartender graciously provided me with a pair of scissors. The cheese & salami combo was very good and in combination with the beer, hit all the right spots. ***Drinks*** In my flight of four, I got Storm the castle, late knight, salt city IPA, and black heart. Storm the castle is a hazy IPA and has been my all-time favorite from this brewery. I was informed by Untappd that this was the third check-in of Storm the Castle from this location. The late knight was the surprise of the evening. A nice crisp, strong IPA. It is so well-balanced that you can balance a pint on your head while doing a handstand :). Salt city IPA had some tough competition from the other two IPAs in the lineup, but it held its own. It kind of grew on me throughout the evening. A clear favorite when you don't want to drink your favorite IPA. No comments on black heart. I also tried the fearless 2022 which is a coffee stout. My tablemate correctly predicted that it would be sweet and boozy, and it was a tad sweet for me. I was really hoping for more of a coffee flavor to come through. It did serve as a good dessert (instead of coffee) to cap the evening. ***PROTIP*** Order your food delivery BEFORE you arrive at the location. That way you can time your drinks and food perfectly! ***Overall*** It was a wonderful experience, and I would definitely repeat. Highly recommended! read more

Middle Ages is one of the pioneer Syracuse craft breweries, so I doff my jester cap in their medieval themed direction. Co-owners Marc and Mary Rubenstein were also pioneers in planting their business on what could have been charitably described as the "transitional" near west side. Now, it's a pretty cool but still largely unhip neighborhood, with a fantastic park as it's centerpiece, and the old Dietz lantern factory renovated into housing. In the intervening years, they've gone from a tiny stand-up tasting room/growler filling station to a full-blown taproom, that aspires to have a Game of Thrones vibe, but really has a Medieval Times banquet budget for set decoration. A nice wood plank/wrought iron appointed door here, a carved dragon head there. Just enough kitsch to remind you of the founders' original focus on English style beers. Again, time passes, and now son Isaac has the reigns to the mythical beast. Like any sensible modern brewer chasing the trend du jour, there are IPAs and sours and such, but alongside trad things like bitters, milds and stouts. The beers here are generally good, but not particularly outstanding. There's a big expansion of the taproom space underway, so I look forward to seeing more changes in Middle Ages' future. read more

Let me walk you through our visit (which was on a Thursday around 1 pm). We parked along Wilkinson St. but weren't sure if parking was ok there (since there are signs at both ends of the block about no stopping or something.) We didn't get towed, and the bartender said we should be fine. The building looks old, industrial but they've added some friendly touches like a tent for outdoor, warm-weather sitting, and a "speak-easy" little face-door in the entrance door. The bar area is one large room with plenty of tables and a long bar sitting area. I counted about 22 beers on tap all made by Middle Ages, so that's impressive. The bartender was helpful, informative and took care of us without us having to hail him down. There were about a dozen men in the place and only 1 woman (my daughter) at the time. I'm sure that ratio is more even during weekend evenings. The flight cost was $14 (each) and you will get a 3.5% extra charge if you use your credit card. The beers were all pretty good. I particularly liked the Nitro Recess Stout (coffee flavored) and the Dinosaur Ape (hint of apricot). They also offered canned beers and merch for purchase. The dragon head on the wall, the suit of knight armor, etc. is cool for about 5 minutes. read more

The real shame is that you can't get beer from here outside of Syracuse. This is a great local brewery with some really good beers that I wish were being sold in my local Total Wine in Miami. Middle Ages is pretty no-frills on the inside - just a small bar and a couple of high-top tables, but the whole point is to enjoy some great craft brews. I'd definitely recommend doing a flight and having a taste of a few different ones to find your favorite. I tried the Ape Hanger, Jester's Nectar, Swallow Wit, Wailing Wench, and Duke of Winship. My favorites were the Jester's Nectar and the Swallow Wit, but Jester's Nectar won the day by a landslide. My friends and I left with a couple of jugs of the Jester's Nectar that we just couldn't stop drinking over the next couple of days. Of the breweries I visited in the Syracuse area, I'd put Middle Ages at the top of the list. Definitely make a stop there if you're visiting. read more

For purchase there are plenty of six packs and you can also refill growlers what you can buy on the promises. It has a full body mouthfeel to it - swallow wit wheat 4.8% - a nice and light beer that is easy to drink - dinosaur ape hanger ale (golden ale with apricot) 5% - I really enjoyed this one bc it's litchi and fruity with a hint of apricot flavor, yet it's not sour like sours or gozes. Favorite brewery. By far. The place doesn't seem that inviting at first. When I stopped by for my first visit, I wasn't sure the place was even open. But I was craving some craft brews and wandered in anyway. It's a good thing I did. They have most of their beers on tap for sampling, and they feed you samples until you feel that you've mooched enough. I always feel like I have to buy something when I go there, and their prices aren't bad either. Growler fills, if I remember correctly are between $8 and $13. Favorites are the IBA, Porter, and Apricot Ale. read more

I love local breweries, and as far as this one goes I find it ok in comparison to others I've been to across the country. That said, I do enjoy coming here. You can do a tasting for $3 that is refunded with a purchase. For the tasting, you choose the beers you want to taste from a list of beers on tap. I find that nice, as my husband and I can taste together and each get different beers and share. If you don't want to do a tasting, you can also purchase a larger size of a beer that is on tap to enjoy (I forget the price though). They have big growlers and half growers. Personally, I like the half growlers size. We have three of them which allows us to get a few different kinds of beer without having a ton of beer to drink before it goes flat. In addition to growler fills, they also sell bottles of beer. The beer that is available for growlers changes daily, and I believe they list current growler fills on their website. My favorite beer (Tripel Crown) happens to never be on growler fill when we go, so we typically do get a couple of bottles when we come here. Other favorites of ours include the X Double IPA and the Wailing Wench. One of the things I've realized about their beer, though, is that there does seem a common underlying flavor to them all. Maybe it is the yeast used, but that is just a guess as I know nothing about beer brewing. The staff is awesome and friendly, and there is usually a very friendly and cute cat roaming around. The prices are also very reasonable. We recently became members of their founder's club. It cost $40 for the first year and includes some perks which are completely worth it if you are even a semi-frequent customer. Offhand I can't remember all of the details, but it does include a ticket or two to their yearly summer party which is held outdoors and has lots of beer. I do wish they had a larger tasting room with seating and food to purchase, but overall, I enjoy coming to Middle Ages when I'm in the mood for a beer tasting and growler refill. read more

Excellent for what it is - a stand up bar and sample shots. My only gripe is that the bar was crowded, as samplers had no where else to loiter, so getting served required patience. But we couldn't find any in the self-serve stacks along the wall, and couldn't fight the shoulder to shoulder to get to ask the tender, so we left empty handed. :-( read more

I enjoyed my visit to this brewery. The indoor space is large and they have picnic tables and umbrellas outdoors as well. And woot! They have live music and lots of different performers that come thru. Check out their event page on their website to find out which artists come which day. The artist we saw played some Red Hot Chili Pepper covers. The music is festive but makes it harder to have conversation. They allow dogs both indoors and outdoors unleashed! I was very excited about the friendly dogs I met. I had a flight that was $8 for four. They were pretty large. You got to choose any four you wanted (with the exception of two beers you couldn't choose). The interior is cozy and has a fireplace and dragon head decor. Tomorrow they're celebrating their 23rd anniversary at Leavenworth Park. There'll be beer and food trucks. There's ample street parking. They have a ton of beers on tap. The atmosphere is casual and not overly crowded. They're the longest running brewery in Syracuse. I tried the Dino ale, swallow witt, Syracuse pale ale and the ape ale. read more

Finally got to check this place out! Loved the new tasting room. Was super cozy and spacious. They don't serve food, but you can bring food to eat and there are food trucks outside. When we went the toss n fire food truck was there. (If I'd known I wouldn't have brought other food!!) Dogs are allowed since they technically only sell drinks too. We sat by the fireplace and started with a flight. The beers honestly were a hit or miss. None of them were impressively great, but a few of them were just not good. I personally liked the Middle ages IPA and the Apricot ale. I love recess coffee, but wouldn't recommend the recess stout. read more

The new tap room is open !!! This is the best of Syracuse. Friendly staff, great beer and super pricing. What not to love. Middle Ages is a must on the to do list when we are in Syracuse. We have been coming to Middle Ages since all samples were free and Jester was Double Wit. You get the flight price back when you get a growler fill so bring your growlers and take home your favorite.
