I went to Midnight Diner at 2:30 am. I was in town for a conference downtown. I ordered the shrimp and grits. It was okay, I didn't really care for the sauce included. The customer service was actually great and we didn't have to wait. Midnight Diner has limited parking on the backside. This is the classic late night/early morning spot after a night downtown. read more

Great gem in downtown Charlotte. We went with a group of 6 on Sunday at 11:00am, only had to wait a few minutes for a table. Service was polite quick and food was delicious. We had the southwest omelette, egg white supreme omelette, bacon/egg/cheese biscuit, chicken tenders, and the the chicken ranch wrap. Everything was delicious! The omelette aren't huge but they come with 2 sides so the meal overall is very filling, the chicken finger plate is enormous, and the biscuits are huge & very yummy. read more

Went to the Midnight Diner after a football game to grab something to eat. We expected there to be a line, which there was, and was told wait would be 35/40 minutes, but then was seated within 10 minutes. The menu had so many things to choose from!! I got the thumbs up French toast, and this was honestly the BEST French toast I've ever eaten EVER!!! The music was awesome and made you feel like dancing in your seat. I will go back for sure, and want to drive to Charlotte (2hrs) just to go here! read more

Went here with my daughter and her boyfriend. Place needs a DEEP cleaning!! Waiter/waitress (not sure which) was nice but overworked. No refill on coffee - never checked on, forgot to bring things...took a long time to get the check. Food was Ok. Regular diner stuff. Nothing special & the smell & dirty booth/table were kinda nasty. I don't ever need to go back. read more

I had to drop off my car at the shop this morning so we decided to treat ourselves to breakfast. We haven't been to the Midnight Diner since we've moved back to town last year and were excited to have an excuse to go on a Friday morning. We walked in to a mostly empty restaurant which isn't surprising on a weekday. I smiled and greeted several servers as we walked back to our booth and no one responded in kind. That's fine, however in a service position I would think it would be important to be kind to your potential customer. The hostess put the menus and silverware down on a dirty table and walked away. Also no friendly conversation. One look at the (lack of) space on either side of the table and it was clear we weren't going to be comfortable at this table. We turned to look for the hostess but she had disappeared. My partner asked someone behind the bar if we could sit at a different table but she just looked right through her as if we were invisible. So we selected a booth 2 spaces down from the original table, one that we could both fit comfortably in, and sat down. We were immediately approached by the hostess and a server telling us we couldn't sit there because the server whose section we had sat in had too many table (2 full booths from what we could see). We explained quietly that we couldn't sit in the original booth because it was too small-I personally don't like to draw attention to the fact that I am a larger woman. They continued to tell us we couldn't sit TWO BOOTHS down from where we were originally placed and it seemed like a huge hardship for the server to just take care of us there, it's not like we went to the other side of the restaurant. People were starting to look and it felt very much like a scene was about to happen so We walked out. I just wanted breakfast and wanted to be seated comfortably while I ate it. I can understand that switching booths might be a hardship when the restaurant is packed and super busy but there were only a handful of booths occupied. I won't be back to give them another chance. read more

Probably the best grits in Charlotte outside of The Flying Biscuit. I almost always order breakfast here because they have NEESES LIVERMUSH! Ok. I know, I know but I'm still gonna eat it and I'm still gonna not read the package because I still don't wanna know exactly WHAT livermush is lol. Midnight Diner is always poppin. It's open 24-hours and they have a great menu so people are literally in here 24-hours a day. I'm a huge breakfast/brunch fan so the fact I can get it anytime here is a big plus! I always had great customer service and it's always been clean. They even have a jukebox! Today the sanitation score is a 93 (idk what that's about but um...) The only reason I'm giving 4-stars instead of 5 is because subsequently since they're so popular there is almost always a wait and parking is limited. Seriously if you haven't eaten at Midnight Diner you are missing it! read more

This place gave me such a bad experience. I had such a rude hostess. The only person that was nice was luckily, my waiter. It took forever to get someone to wait on me because it seemed like the others were just standing there for no reason. I wouldn't go back again. Food was nothing special. I would've been better off at a wafflehouse. read more

So good! They have a mix of breakfast and burgers/normal food. They also serve beer and local beers. I got a waffle with sausage eggs and grits. I killed my waffle. My Server was also super nice and literally brought me anything I could've needed without asking!! read more

My better half and I are visiting in town and were trying to find some yummy yet simple breakfast. We thought the local diner was a good start. It looked promising via the reviews and the fact that there was a wait, so it's obviously popular amongst locals and visitors. Traysel, our waitress, was extremely courteous and patient with my girlfriend's indecisiveness. Food came out fast, and hot. Cooked to perfection. My girlfriend put their grits above her own fathers who is a proud southern man who made "the best grits in the south!" Affordable and clean. The staff really seems to enjoy their job and the people who come in. We've now found where we will start each day for the remainder of this trip. Do yourself a favor and give them a try! read more

This has become the worst dining experience ever. We sat and waited to be approached for over 20 min. Then when the coffee was ordered the server said it's being made walked away and never came back. It wasn't until I started asking around they had to go outside and fetch our server. Then he came back condescendingly and said I told you it's being made when I saw two other servers serving coffee to others. Then when we'd ask for something he stopped and said do you want anything else very rudely. He was throwing condiments and the check down. Very immature and clearly didn't want to be there. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I used to love coming here but it's changed. read more

I'm a bit disappointed by this place. I got the fried chicken with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Everything was bland. With that said, the chicken was fried to crispy perfection and was succulent and oily, just the way I like it. The sides were luke warm though and just unpleasant to eat. I guess it's a good place to go if you're watching your blood pressure. Me, I need some more salt and spices! read more

Depends on what time your going because you can wait in that line for about an hour. Then when you get inside it's so tight. The food is amazing and worth it however you may want to try this during the day and I don't mean lunch hours or breakfast hours. You may want to go in between. The chicken and French toast is my favorite. But everything is really good. read more

Open 24 hours and still almost always busy! Love this spot for an alternative to Waffle House. Food is good. They serve breakfast all day as well as burgers and shakes - typical diner food! Heard this was a Charlotte staple and I wasn't disappointed! This was my first time trying Midnight Diner and everything from the service to the food was on point! My bf ordered the French toast, eggs, sausage, and grits while I had the western omelet with turkey bacon. Delicioso (Kodak Black reference)! Couldn't be more satisfied. This is my first time visiting Charlotte from the West Coast. I asked a few locals for a good brunch spot and Midnight was highly recommended. My family had Shrimp and Grits, Chicken n Waffles and lastly the Coconut Crunch French Toast. Let me tell you....the French Toast was buttery, melt in your mouth, with a light crunch of the coconut. The BEST I ever had hands down! The chicken n waffle was good (nothing amazing). The creole sauce on the shrimp was really tasty. This diner is definitely worth visiting! read more

Simple but delicious! There is a reason why this diner is alway busy. The food is good and very affordable. Due to it popularity, there is usually a wait when I deem to go, but it is never regretted. Friendly service, but can be slow at times. I enjoy their breakfast dishes. The grits are the best in town, and the French Toast is thick cut and sweet. I have never had a bad meal. Great to go with friends and family, or just to people watch at the wee hours of the morning. Not good for a quick bite. During busy hours there will be a wait for seating, your server, food and your check. I still think it's worth it! read more

Came in on a Tuesday around noon. Wasn't too crowded but it took a while for the hostess to seat us. Once we were seated, the service was quick and our food was amazing! I suspected the tales of epic Shrimp & Grits and life-altering Chicken & Waffles at 2am were bound to be exaggerations, but alas, the Midnight Diner is gold, Ponyboy. My friend and I stopped in after a very long day at work upon my brother's recommendation. Even after midnight on a Sunday night (actually Monday morning) the place was packed. Boisterous diners of all shapes & sizes were busy celebrating LIFE and FOOD! We were seated promptly and quickly greeted by possibly the BEST SERVER EVER!! Jaya (sp?) was quick, sincere, knowledgeable, and a genuine pleasure to be around. We asked about the Shrimp & Grits and Chicken & Waffles, and she confidently recommended BOTH. I ordered the S&G, my friend ordered the C&W. Jaya suggested that the waffles were good, but not that special. She then recommended the Chicken & French Toast. In short order, our food was brought to us, and NOTHING was a disappointment. Maybe the Shrimp could have been bigger, but they gave me 8 instead of the advertised 6, so I was just fine with that. Yes, it was awesome. The S&G was spicy enough to start a fire, but gentle enough to savor every bite, the undeniable warm, fluffy goodness of the buttermilk biscuit puts Bojangle's to absolute shame, the C&FT was so good it should be illegal and the atmosphere was thick with electric, deep-fried, southern goodness. Stop what you're doing, and go to Midnight Diner NOW! read more

Ive come here on two different occasions and I truly enjoyed my food and dining experience as a whole. I love the quaint little diner. The first time I ordered the shrimp and grits which is to die for and the second time I ordered the fish sandwich and my counterpart ordered the fried chicken. The food was good and the service was good as well. I cant wait to bring my mom and some other out of towners. This is my new go to spot. read more

Good Food with horrible service!!! Buyer beware. Had spent the evening in downtown Charlotte with family just purchased season tickets to new Charlotte FC team so will be in area a lot Decided to visit MD for meal. Was seated quickly and instructed as most restaurants do to scan menu. I eventually ordered a la carte food however I was charged for a meal price. When I brought this to my servers attention. She became defensive and upset citing menu was wrong and had been so for months and there was nothing she could do. Eventually another sever came over and refused to assist saying our server should have given us actual menus and the GM instructed her over. After 15 mins a banter another server/manager pleaded with me to pay bill as is bc she could do nothing. They wanted me to pay for a meal although I only received a few a la carte items. Everyone refused to help or assist. It was pretty insulting for them to lay blame on me for menu changes supposedly made months ago but not reflecting in the online prices. I now live in Charlotte but I can not return or advise anyone to go there with the poor and insulting service read more

I've been to this place a few times at different hours of the day. I have had the fried chicken (tasty), the "philly" cheesesteak, and one of their most talked about items...the Cajun shrimp & grits (Amazing!). As a northern I typically don't eat grits. If I do, it has to be made like my oatmeal or cream of wheat which is with butter and sugar. In this instance though, take it as it is. You won't regret it! read more

I miss Charlotte, especially the cheap and delicious bloody marys at midnight dinner! My boyfriend was there working nights so he and his coworkers had been frequenting it so much that by the time I arrived, the servers knew them by name. I wish I could recall the best ones name, however never did we have bad service so I suppose it does not much matter. I can't wait to visit this spot again. The food was greasy diner food, but well prepared and served hot... with cocktails. Works for me! read more

Horrid. Grotesque and if there were a worse adjective I would use that. I can't fathom how this place has any good ratings. Perhaps drunken millennial smasholes? It took us 20 minutes to be greeted at least. My well done burger was cold. Not quite sure how that happens and my husband is currently sticking his finger down his throat in the bathroom bc he felt so ill after his oh so delectable meal. Spare Yourselves, your digestive tracts and go elsewhere...you're better than this. read more

This is one of my favorite breakfast places- but definitely be ready to eat! This is the opposite of a light meal. Midnight diner has great, southern inspired dishes and classic 50s diner atmosphere. Be ready to wait a little because this place is popular! My favorite thing to get is the Bubba: an open faced biscuit with scrambled eggs, cheese, and sausage gravy on top. It comes with your choice of meat and hash browns, grits or fruit. Wowee- definitely allow time for a nap after this meal! The chicken and waffles are also delicious and a staple at the Midnight Diner. My take is, if you go for the traditional breakfast staples you will not be disappointed! read more

Came here at 5 am after work. Easily over a dozen people eating, with food being brought out. Orders were still being taken. Probably as many staff. Despite advertising as open 24/7, I was told "Closed". Refused to seat us or serve us. Cool. I'll take my money somewhere that they want it, and I won't be back. read more

They were as dense and unappealing as the mini biscuits. The chicken itself was fine. If I was only rating the chicken I'd probably give it a 3.5. The best dish was actually the "GOAT." It was served with a Standard biscuit which we thought was still too dense and dry. I recommend finding an independent restaurant that serves real, "from scratch" food. I should point out that the service crew in the dining room who delivered the food as well as provided cleanup and assistance, were exceptional. They were friendly, courteous, and focused on customer service. I'm sure they deserve more than they are being paid. It was obvious many of them were spanish-speaking immigrants. My husband's favorite is their White Chocolate Bread Pudding Pancakes, with bacon ($2 extra). Don't let the name deter you--these pancakes aren't too thick. They are slightly chewy, and the white chocolate whiskey sauce is amazing. He rarely uses the syrup! Ruby's coffee is always good and strong, and their service is great, no matter who you get. Otherwise, at least for now, perseverance and patience, or luck, are required. So everyone's aware, Uchi is a chain albeit a rather exclusive one. Charlotte has the tenth location, next closest is in, let's see, Nashville. We've now eaten at three of these (also Miami and Hollywood). What I can tell you is that the design and decor vary considerably in each as do the menu items. The seafood tends to be locally sourced (relatively speaking) if possible and the seasonal menu is updated, literally, daily. I enjoyed the design of this Midwood Charlotte restaurant more than the others. It's in a renovated historic building and has an airy, modern yet industrial vibe. That is, except for perhaps the alcove where we were seated. This nook reminded me somewhat of my uncle's wood-paneled basement from many years past. That's OK, because what the niche may have lacked in aesthetic was made up by providing a more secluded quiet space for intimate conversation. Because we were hungry yet at the same time lazy we chose the chef's tasting omakase menu. Ten small courses chosen by the kitchen, no muss or fuss on our part. Many, but not all of the courses are from the menu. You can review my photos of some of the dishes, I remembered the names of most. Favorites? In general it has to be the sushi. Sure, the fresh fish is delicious but it's the rice, that incredible moist, flavorful short-grained rice that makes them sing. If you've only had sushi or rolls from a lower-end restaurant or grocery store then, my friends, you're in for a treat. My wife LOVES Uchi so now that there's one in our neighborhood we'll definitely be back.

Very piss poor customer service. Unsolicited and unprovoked negative and very disrespectful attitudes amongst management to Frontline staff. A prime example as to why some black people.dont need to be in power and position especially those type of females observed this morning between 4:30am and 4:50am. Wherefore entering the establishment awaiting to be seated for nearly 5 10 minutes with no customers in line.despite being handicapped with visible orthotic boot on left foot...only to ve seated where the bar was still nasty with food particles. After attempting to sit at bar only to notice with my boot on my foot the space was too small.and very uncomfortable. Thus, I asked, the same attendant who escorted me to initial seat PERMISSION to switch to another location in the direction the Clean up guy pointed after saying he was about to close down and clean the left side so.i had to.go.to.the right side. The attendant said that was fine. I changed location. After awaiting far longer than one would expect at such an establishment for service a security guard approaches me telling me his manager who is a black woman by the of Q. Alleges that I sat myself. Then ordered to me leave... I'm explaining to the very disrespectful security of steelgate that I was given permission to change locations by her staff attendant. And, asked him to go get the manager and whether she consulted with the attendant that permitted to change location before I did. He no I can't go the manager and they not consult with the attendant. So I went to consult with the attendant to prove my position. She then becomes hesitant to the tell.the truth. And opts to misrepresent facts... then, steelgate security guy approaches me as if I'd been causing issues or behaving in some sort of threatening manner threatening me while attempting to exercise NOT ONLY HUMAN RIGHTS, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS BUT ALSO CONSUMER RIGHTS... I repeatedly requested names of manager and of security for the purpose of filing necessary complaints with better business bureau as well as for civil purposes. It was at that juncture security became even more volatile and provocative and to someone who initiated no issues...simultaneously asked for permission that he and Midnight Diner's Manager between aforementioned time falsely alleged I didn't. Further denying my ability to effectively exercise my rights... That little area including the bus station not far from it and the bar 58th and something right behind the bus station seems to really be interconnected on some real corrupt enterprises and organizations especially when it comes to targeting certain demographics of people and without provocation.. They really need to be INVESTIGATED in both their OFFICIAL & PERSONAL CAPACITIES...stemming from at least December 2023 to present...when I first began having issues with The Grey Hound bus station extending to the bar directly behind or before it 58th and something. I dont quite recall name at this juncture... The secretary of NC state and all other relevant institutions responsible for investigating and sanctioning these places really should began investigating them.. Unless of course they're getting some sort of PAY-OFF to ignore on-going issues with these particular entities and therefore are apart of the issues endangering people's lives and safety etc...while their officers of the are also clearly prejudice to certain people as experienced in December of 2023 after being initially harassed then falsely accused by Grey Hound staff members(black females) plus transportation terminated and cops called for what evidence proved was no more than pure harassment by same staff. Yet Charlotte Pd showed grave prejudice to A black man who was on his way to a job interview. And, this was after the initial investigating officer determined no crimes had been committed. And, that was probably only because I'd been familiar with and able to convey my rights. Otherwise, I'd probably been another victim of America's racism in the form of law enforcement just doing their jobs without any regards to my 14th amendment rights to due process. It's disgusting and despicable for black men doing no harm or wrong to have to still be harassed, denied opportunities, and even so much as a simple meal at an establishment where customer service was pass poor....and EVEN WORSE WHEN THESE ESTABLISHMENTS ARE OPERATED BY COLORED FOLKS... But, it's like the old Cliché says, Blacks dont have to worry about the klan and their white robs and hoodies or caps oppressing them anymore. When asking "where do you go when you come to Charlotte?" This place is always mentioned. Followed by "GET THE SHRIMP AND GRITS!" So, I did what I was told LOL! For parking, there is a small parking lot in the front but you can also park in the rear area. I was told that we went at a good time (Saturday around 4pm) because if we waited longer, we would have had to wait. Everyone also says that this place is POPPIN' right after the club let's out especially since it is 24 hours. It's a great place to people watch. You can tell that the waitresses were hustlers. They made sure they claimed their table and also made sure that you were helped. I ordered the Shrimp and grits and yes. YES. YES. .. y - e - s. Everything was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend got a philly cheese steak and he said it was good. He also ordered mac and cheese and also another side of fries. The fries were "basic" and not really special, but they were good. Shay, our waitress took great care of us also. She made sure that our glasses were full. Bathrooms were clean and it was appreciated. The floors were also clean around the restaurant. This is one of my favorite diners here in Charlotte. It also operates 24/7 so it's always convenient and available. The menu is large and has options for everyone. It's also very affordable and won't break the bank. This restaurant is great for families during the day and friends having a night out later in the evening. My personal favorite dish is the shrimp and grits. I haven't had shrimp and grits this good anywhere! They also have Chicken and French Toast that's delicious and you can't find at many other places. I love shrimp and grits and the shrimp and grits at Midnight Dines taste like the restaurants in Charleston and Savannah. It was creamy and full of flavor. I wish that I ordered two bowls. The service was terrible. I had to wait fifteen minutes before I got my drink and the server kept apologizing for forgetting to bring items that I requested. The price of the food makes it a good value so take the entire family. read more

I will say this, their firecracker shrimp grits are amazing. I hate grits and this the only place i'll eat them. It's spicy, creamy, and buttery. Cons: Other customers, loud crying and screaming kids. Late night, after hours crowd you risk fights breaking out and long lines.
