Victor is an absolute genius with color and automatically knew exactly what color to use to enhance my hair color from a flat brown to a beautiful deep shiny brown. I was on a time crunch and him and his team were able to do pink and white tips, single process, eyebrow wax, and pedi in less than 3 hrs, which is amazing! Very poor customer service. I got a dip powder mani+pedi and mani+pedi with an add-on 20 min massage for my friend. The guy who did my manicure end up cutting my finger tip with his sharp nails. My friend who got the mani+pedi plus an add-on massage was rushed the whole time. The lady who gave him the foot massage was rude. Our bill came out to be $145 before tips. The woman who did my nails was filing so much, very aggressively so i have two cuts on my fingers that are very sore & tender from this! I am not very happy with how it turned out. I don't typically get my nails done, due to my profession, but a few times a year I'll treat myself. The service was nice but the end product was not. I chose a more neutral tone and the paint job was so thin and poor, I could spot my actual nails through the polish especially on the sides. I felt rushed as the ladies hovered over me waiting for my nails to dry, telling me they were dry when I felt differently. Sure enough I left and immediately came back in when some polish smudged off from the freaking receipt. Then after driving home, approximately 15mins away, my big toenail polish smudged from a single blade of grass... just infuriating. I had chosen an OPI polish but have never experienced this kind of trouble before. Would not recommend. read more

They are slightly higher than other shops I've been to in the past, they are definitely worth it. They are very sufficient with time and service. I recommend Tina. Being the wonderful and awesome fiancee that I am, I set up a birthday spa day for my fiancee and some of close girlfriends. Since I am a guy and I know pretty much nothing about quality day spa's in Houston I did a lot of research to find the best day spa in Houston. And what I found was that Midtown Retreat pretty much had everything that I was looking for and at a price that was completely reasonable. I wanted a place that offered all typical spa services, could accommodate up to 6 women at the same time, and with a comfortable atmosphere. When I booked the birthday spa day, I found that the staff was incredibly helpful and willing to book the schedule I wanted for all of the ladies. They walked me through the entire schedule the day before the event and they were able to keep to it on the day of despite my need to add an additional person at the last minute. Upon arrival they helped orchestrate my fiance's surprise welcome and they did a great job keeping everyone to their schedules. The staff were very nice and all of the ladies seemed pleased with their experience at Midtown Retreat. After several hours of watching women get pampered, I decided that I had worked hard enough and deserved a mani/pedi. I was very impressed my nail technician. She took very good care of my nails and she took her time. Also I loved the full back massage chairs that made for a very relaxing experience. The mani/pedi was $45 and it took about a hour. Despite how much I enjoyed the mani/pedi, I did feel that it was a bit overpriced. Their was nothing about it that was extremely special and I felt that I could get a very comparable service for less cost. But nevertheless I still enjoyed my mani/pedi. So all in all I really enjoyed Midtown Retreat. My fiance's birthday spa day was a great success. She loved every second of her experience and in the end that is the factor that mattered the most. Had a classic pedicure today by Brittany, she is pretty attentive to details so I am satisfied with her work. While waiting for my nails to dry I decided to go for their gel manicure and Brittany got another nail technician which I forgotten to ask for her name. I usually get my nails soaked prior to any cuticles removal but they don't do it here but nevertheless she did a pretty thorough job. Overall I am quite satisfied with the services here. While I was there, I noticed that the Asian male hairstylist is very knowledgeable with hair technique while he explained to the customer who was there for cut and color. I might be keen to get my hair done with him next time. read more

I recently moved to the area and am shopping around for a salon that does good but affordable facials. This was my first time at this place and I was expecting great things from it after reading all the reviews. I should have read them a bit more carefully because most of them are raving about the mani-pedis or the hair services. I really enjoyed my facial (the actual service) but was not at all happy with the noise level. I could not only hear all the conversation going on outside (or room next door, not sure) but also a loud TV simultaneously throughout my service. I am not sure yet if I will return. Outstanding! I moved downtown but was nervous to switch nail salons since I had been loyal to mine for almost 3yrs. I noticed the place when grocery shopping at Randall's and decided to give it a try with a friend. We were welcomed immediately and got seated pretty quick! Offered us drinks which I loved about my last place. There wasn't too many colors to choose from powder wise but still achieved the desired look. I have been going to Midtown Retreat this year for brows with Tee, a couple of microderm treatments (also Tee), and various mani/pedi services. Today, for the first time I had Victor for a cut/color and seriously the man is a color genius! He knows so much about hair color and the science behind getting the color that you want and keeping it (despite washing your hair in Houston water, which all blondes know kills any ashy tones). He will consult you on what you should to to get the shade that you want, and how to do that in the most cost efficient and healthiest way possible! I usually don't like my hair immediately after it has been cut/colored but I love love what Victor has done for me. I've been to every salon in midtown and no one knows what they are doing like he does. Here are other reasons why this place is my #1 salon: - Easy to get an appointment, have hardly ever been turned away even when I book last minute - Never disappointed with facials or nail services, and haven't liked my brows this much in a long time - Tee is the best at brows and facials! She knows the image product line very well, and gives great recommendations. If I could give them a (-) negative star rating, I would. Would not have bothered to write a review if there was JUST low quality nail polish, small polish selection, employees with serious attitude problems, and neglecting customers, etc. BUT only one person in the store knew the actual prices. I called and one person told me 1 price, I went in and 2 employees were arguing about what the actual price was! I had to ASK for a paper with the price to figure it out. It's like they were trying to charge me as much as possible and couldn't decide. The woman doing my nails would literally huff and puff silent complaints like she hated her job, and when I was picking a new polish color so she could redo it (because the color was see-through when it wasn't supposed to be) any time I picked up a color to inspect it, she would push me like she was trying to rush me out by saying "Yeah that's pretty" over and over again - again with attitude. While I was getting my nails done, another customer kept asking for grand total for about $300 worth of products and the front desk tried to get the customer to add it up herself! Maybe she was new or something. A second customer came in after, and she was charged twice because of a groupon. It was just a mess. I'm returning to my old salon. NOT worth it. read more

Loved a lot about the place, but one thing may keep me away.. . I'm from the suburbs and this place has some things we don't get. Will massage your neck and shoulders while getting pedicure (for a price).. worth it. Loved the honesty with the timers.. Felt like it was clean, until when she was done with my pedicure and gathering her tools, she rinsed the pedicure rasp and put it back in the drawer.. Overall experience 3/5 Nails 5/5 Hair 2/5 The space: In a strip mall- like setting. Nicely decorated (I love the light fixtures above the nail stations and the green walls). It still reminds me of your run of the mill nail salons except also with three hair salon chairs which seem a bit out of place. Nails- Got a gel lacquer manicure. Nails looked perfect and I'm SUPER picky about the littlest things. I was super happy with how they turned out. Can't find one thing wrong with them. The girl was also gentle which helps build trust that they aren't going to rip off my nail bed or be the dreaded cuticle cutter. Had complete confidence with her, which is a rare thing! Hair (Shampoo and blow out with curls): All I can say is I've had better. My stylist arrived while I was getting my nails done and I otherwise saw no other stylist. The chairs were empty when I arrived. Granted it was a Tuesday afternoon and not very busy. While I don't expect a full-on, long head massage I do expect a little bit of one with the shampoo but it was non existent. For my hair I wanted a blow out with some loose waves that kept the length of my hair. Upon leaving my hair looked fantastic. My hair usually holds a curl really well- to the point where I can sleep on it and it still looks great the next day. My hair fell flat within FIVE minutes of leaving the salon. I don't know if it was the heat/humidity or what, but it was seriously disappointing. The service cost $55 and it's completely overpriced for what this place is. Plus, it was $10 more to use a curling iron on it. What a waste! I would not get my hair done here again. Overall experience: My nail tech and stylist were both pretty friendly. I was greeted upon entering and offered water which I really appreciated, I was super dehydrated from just getting off a flight. I used my Yelp check in to get my 5% discount. When I brought it up to the guy at the cash, he said nothing and shook his head no. I THINK he was just joking around but it was really hard to tell; and then he finally said "we'll give you whatever it says". So I saved a whopping $4 haha. It's not much but it's something. If you don't want to give a discount though, take it off yelp! It made me feel stupid for asking. I booked online which was fine, but you have to book all your services separately which was annoying. If you are going in for more than one thing it might be best to just call. The lists of different services is also kinda long so it was cumbersome to find exactly which nail service I wanted to book. When I was online I also saw they have a $5 charge for "an extra coat or long nails". I usually try to stay away from places with a bunch of weird, and in my opinion, unnecessary charges. It makes me worry my bill is going to be a surprise, which gives me anxiety. If I'm being completely honest, I almost cancelled my appointments until I saw there could be a fee charged with less than 24 hours notice. After I booked, I saw some responses by the owner to certain Yelp reviews that in my opinion are unprofessional. They include saying that they didn't want someone as a customer, placed blame on a customer and telling a client they made things difficult by telling her how to do her job. I GET it. I can understand how hard that makes it, I've been there too. I also believe there is a way to say things, especially on a public forum where potential customers can see how you respond to previous clients. It has in the past made me NOT go to a business that I was considering. Had I seen these responses before booking I absolutely would have taken this place off my list of choices. I'm writing this because it factors into my final verdict on whether or not I would return, and so here it is: Verdict: I wouldn't choose to come back. If you are in a pinch and it's convenient, then come get your nails done here; but leave your hair to someone else. There are better choices for a more reasonable price. Edit: I did say that I didn't want too many products in my hair. At the end she did put something in my hair. I said "whatever you suggest" and actually said yes to hairspray but she only put some sort of cream/gel in. If I'm am paying $10 for a service that won't last it's the hairdressers job to advise me the same. This did not happen. I wouldn't have gotten curls put in at all! So yes there is something more she could have done. As for the joke, I can take a joke, if it's actually funny. But thank you for proving my point. I have no problem with business owners telling their side of the story. I do however think that it needs to be professional and articulated more carefully. I have been coming to Midtown Retreat for over 2 years now. I've been very pleased with the nail services they provide, specifically the shellac nails and pedis. (Timmie gives a GREAT Signature Pedi!!) I have only had one unsatisfied visit in two years. Which sound similar to the other complaints listed regarding nails looking old 2 days after getting them done. With that said, I believe it was the same nail tech and I don't think she is there anymore. BUT Midtown Retreat has a very large selection of all the FUN and TRENDY Shellac colors WITH matching OPI colors for your toes. A service that I cannot find in my area, and what keeps me coming. (Ask for Brittani!) Booking an appt is also suggested. Though they take walk-ins, I'm sure you would enjoy your visit more if scheduled. You can book your own appt online AND choose who you would like to do you services through their website. And let's not forget the complimentary water, soda and wine! They're a bit pricey, they did a decent job on my nails. I got a dip powder manicure, and my technician listened to what I wanted and took her time making sure it turned out the way I wanted. However, they could have trimmed cuticles a little better/prepared my nails a little better. A customer next to me was extremely unhappy with their turnout, so I'm not sure how reliable/consistent this place is. I have gotten dip manicures cheaper, so my only other reason for not going back is if I found a better price. Decent experience overall. read more
