Sadly, that legacy has not continued. Since Dr. Highsmith's quiet retirement (with no formal announcement), the practice has changed dramatically. Long-time staff left, and the new team seems more focused on upselling than care. I was handed a thousand-dollar dental estimate after a vet told me it wasn't needed. Prescriptions now require in-person pickup, and I receive excessive marketing emails--sometimes 11 in a single month. Most disappointing: I sent a detailed letter 10/3/25 to the new owner, Dr. Crawford, expressing my concerns and offering a chance to respond. No one replied. If you value transparency, consistency, and genuine care, this may no longer be the right place. I truly hope they find their way back to the values that built their reputation. Apparently they are also changing the name at least thats good as it no longer reflects Highsmith's steller values.

They are the most skilled & compassionate caregivers that I have ever experienced, with 1 exception, the Emergency Vetinary clinic that is on a similar level. Great vet ER and great vet patient care by Highsmith Animal Hospital during the day. They have saved several of my dogs lives and treated our diabetic cat with grace until he passed. Thank you for all you do. Now, a new generation of puppy has been introduced to the staff.

She handled him beautifully and all my worries faded away. You would worry too if you had this handsome cat. He came to me 5 years ago as a ferrel juvenile who fought his way through life on the run. He is now an indoor cat full of personality. Unfortunately he does not understand that humans have skin that tears, not furry coats. I was worried he would slice her up and me too. Because of her excellent handing, he did nothing of the sort. He allowed Sarah to hose him down - shampoo him up - and then rinse him off. I was amazed. He didn't even meow his usual complaints like he does at home when I've offended him. She then used a shami to remove the excess water and set him aside to finish drying. He complained a little when he was drying but settled down rather quickly. He looks so clean and fresh this morning as he is chasing a laser around the living room. I picked up my dog, set up her next grooming appointment and was told the charge would be $85 because my dog was anxious and harder to groom. She went on to say if I give my dog anxiety drugs before her next appointment, she would charge $65. This experience was AWFUL!!! My dog has been to at least 5 groomers and no one has ever told me to drug her! I was never told the price could be more than $65. This woman is deceitful! Stay clear! The call was quick to judge our previous training, quick to interrupt and interject opinions, quick to suggest that I had zero clue what I was talking about, dismissing my concerns with my animals behavior, and quick to mock my notion that what I had spent on trainers was a lot. If you want a trainer that is unprofessional and beyond rude than Marjorie is for you. After speaking to other trainers and comparing my experiences, there are far better options in Wilmington and seemingly much more competent.
