Don't understand. Both dogs went in for there annual and bordatela. The vet charged me $108.00 a dog. Did not even take temperature of animal/check my females ears. Had to say check the boys for them to do it. Did not really examine my animals. Just gave them they're boardatilla and said bye for a total of $218.00. They did'nt give my dog a chance to survive because it was a holiday. My dog came down with a sudden illness and unable to move and was having problems with his breathing. He was healthy and very active just before this. I called to get him in emergently. They told me because it was a holiday they couldn't get him in for 6 hrs. my family and I since I was a young child lived in Warren Oregon. that's where my brother, sister and I grew up. naturally, all of our animals went to midway to see Dr. Fowler and a few others sometimes but Fowler has always been there for us. this started back in the early 1990's when I was a child. I am now 39 years old. I've always taken my doggies to midway. I especially love it when Dr. Fowler can look over my pups. I appreciate him. 2 days ago, my grizzly dog passed away unexpectantly. my whole family was in shock because he was perfectly fine until 5 hours he was dead. he was 10 1/2 years old. everyone points to a stroke that day. I'll always trust the vets at midway. especially Dr. Fowler. my grizzly dog suddenly passed away in a shocking matter of five hours. the next day, myson, wife and I take our grizzly dog to the back of midway..... (I've had to do this before 10 years ago for my Jerry dog).... two young girls come out and help me carry our Grizzly inside. everyone is crying everyone is a complete disaster. not even 12 hours of bringing his body in, I get a message saying those gurls made a mistake and weren't supposed to let you leave without paying $365 dollars and required the payment right now. my family has been a customer of midway vet for 2 generations soon to be a third...... Why can't I give more than 5 stars? To start, my dog is mildly neurotic. Doesn't typically like men, dark clothing, or hats. Lord only knows what else. I don't know what his life was like before the shelter, but even years after adopting him he's still got some... vibes. We were called back by a female vet tech, all was fine. Dr. Fowler walked in the room and, of course, because he's a man my dog wasn't having it at first. Dr. Fowler was amazing with him, won him over and my dog was able to get the check up and vaccines he needed. I can't speak highly enough of the staff I interacted with, especially the vet tech and Dr. Fowler. My family has been taking our dogs to him for years, and he's just as great as I remember. They answered all my questions read things that I could not see to read and we're very kind. It's very difficult and causes me great stress to deal with my blindness. This is after they completed a very aggressive surgery without prior consent. Absolutely terrible level of care. Poorly run as well and no bedside manner. Vet's are snarky and rude. My husband and I were adopted by a malnourished, dirty, little kitty last fall. Every time we came home she would run to our door for pets. Morning, noon, and night, if our door opened, or our cars pulled up, she came running. We figured one of the foreclosures in the area had left her behind, or something along those lines. We decided to let her in our home since the temperatures were getting way too cold for me to even be outside without a heavy coat, much less a tiny kitty. Since we have 3 other indoor cats, I told my husband to make an appointment at Midway to get her checked out before we introduce her to our babies. They gave her some shots, said she had no fleas, and shaved her to check if she was fixed. They said she was not fixed, so they made us another appointment to come back for her surgery. *Upon my own examination, I did find fleas. I went back, bought flea meds and had to give it to all of my kitties... Must have been a part of their master plan* Anyway... We dropped her off to have her procedure but got a call an hour or so later saying they made a mistake and our cat was in fact already fixed. We just had to wait a few extra hours to pick her up because they already doped her up and they want to make sure she comes out of the anesthesia okay. WHAT???? You can't even figure out if a cat is fixed or not? You prep an animal for surgery, put them under, and then discover the surgery is unnecessary? You must be kidding me! I let this incident go because I thought it was just a fluke, however, after reading Nani M.'s review, I am seriously questioning their competency at Midway Veterinary Hospital. I am NEVER taking my animals there again. I do not trust them at all. read more

We have been going to Midway for 13 years. Last year, at 12 years of age, we had to lay our sweet Sophie to rest. The last two years of her life, she was blind and living with diabetes. We had to check her blood and give insulin shots 3 times a day and visited midway at least every two weeks and often weekly. The entire staff was so kind to us, we couldn't imagine taking our pets anywhere else. Shortly after Sophie passing we got a puppy. At 12 weeks he became very ill with an extreme bacterial infection and had to stay at Midway for 6 days. We were devastated after losing Sophie and now the thought of losing our little Bert. During Bert's stay we were provided updates of his condition via phone and were able to come in to walk and love him. He is now a year old, crazy and rambunctious. We are super grateful for the above the standard care and compassion that each of the doctors and all of the staff have shown us. We lived in Portland for several years and actually while Sophie and Bert were in need of care and among all of the great options in Portland choose Midway. We also had a Cat named Bert, he was attacked by a raccoon and had a severe abscess that resulted from his wounds. Dr. Fowler and the Midway crew doctored him up and he heeled up nicely. Bert the cat passed several years later. We have Stella, who is 11 and been seen at midway since she was just a tiny pup. Fortunately, she hasn't needed anything beyond vaccines and check ups. Tuesday we will be bringing our newest addition, Leroy in for his first kitty vaccines and exam. Can't imagine bringing our little loves anywhere but the best. Dr. Josephine Gold gave us such a sense of relief today when we brought in our cat as an emergency. Someone let their dog run loose this morning (I can't believe people are that stupid), we think it chase our cat up the tree, grabbing her right leg as she went. When BeeGee felt safe to come down, we think the leg couldn't hold her, she fell, and in this case, may have landed on all 4 legs, but the injured one collapsed, breaking her hip. BeeGee will have surgery tomorrow, and we have such confidence in Dr. Gold's abilities, we're certain BG will come home in great shape. read more

Today was my appointment with Dr Fowler regarding Lexi passing and the lack of communication between client and Dr.s. Due to the later in the day appointment Dr Fowler was a bit behind with another pet. I waited for just under a half hour. When I was shown in Dr Fowler arrived almost immediately. He expressed his sympathy for Lexi's passing was very empathetic to my feelings. He asked me for the details of her passing if I was around. I told him what happened. He said he was so sorry but it sounded like by the time I had gotten to her she was already gone. His professional opinion was the she had thrown a blood clot and it reached her brain. He has seen animals live long lives with heart murmurs but he thought it highly unlikely that the vaccinations had anything to do with it . He said if there was a mix up or a problem with the vaccines, he would have come out and admitted to it. Before I actually got to the appointment I had researched the vaccines, researched if there were any manufacture recalls and called a few other vets for their opinions of the reaction should Lexi had receive Lilly, the dogs vaccines by accident. The consensus was that she may have gotten sick but highly unlikely it would have caused death. I brought up the fact that it took the Dr that treated Lexi 3 full days in which to get back to me regarding Lexi's passing and that made me even more angry. I asked Dr Fowler when did he find out about Lexi's passing. He replied 5 minutes before he walked through the door. Dr Fowler was apologetic again for my loss and the mishandling of the communication between Dr and client and will address it with his staff. He too would have been very upset and I had every right to be angry. As far as Dr Fowler is concerned, he reacted and said exactly what I needed. His interpretation of what happened to Lexi was both plausible and reasonable. I could live with that. I raised my rating to 3 stars because of Dr Fowler but due to his other staff members I was not willing to give them 5 stars. Thank you Dr. Fowler. read more

Took my dog here to get help with her ears. The intake and assistant staff were kind and very helpful. Experience with Vet Lewis Fowler was not good. Heard this man patronizing female coworkers while waiting for my dog to be looked at. Charges for additional services to "determine details", when asked questions about "details" these services provided, he treats the questions like personal attacks, only states obvious with a bad demeanor. I was extremely disappointed with Fowler's bad attitude and lack of attention to animal's problems. When pointed out additional issues on my dog's legs, without looking at problem he just makes up things to say. This man's priority wasn't my animal's health or identifying the details of her complex situation but it was to rush appointment and rack up the bill. Besides this old man's toxic behavior and very poor service, the rest of the staff are great, although I feel sorry for them to have to deal with this guy. Couple hundred dollars later, dog still cries in pain from simply shaking its head and issues persist. Find yourself a vet with a passion for helping the animals rather than using their misfortune as a meal ticket. I will never take my dog here again. read more

My dog needed an extra visit to have stitches removed. Made the appointment, showed 10 minutes early then got bumped. Also, was told at time of discharge from surgery that the stitches were dissolvable. On top of this he smelled like pee at the time of discharge. A little disappointed, time to find a better vet. Update: When we were finally able to be seen they wanted to take him in the back. I said no. Went into an exam room and waited some more. When the vet showed with a tech, she asked if my dog was licking the wound site because the stitches were gone. Wow, self removing stitches. This makes me wonder if dissolvable stitches were used in the first place. Looking for another vet clinic for our 2 dogs and 3 cats. read more

We have been using Midway since 2010. They have come out to our farm to examine and treat our horses, donkeys, alpacas and Maremma livestock guardian dogs. We have brought them a duck with wounded leg, duck with wounded eye and rooster who had stress fractures from fighting another rooster. We also have had our 2 Standard Schnauzers examined and treated and sadly had to put our elderly blind male down after he had a stroke. They were very caring to him and us. The staff is compassionate at the front desk is compassionate. The vet techs are wonderful --gentle and compassionate. Dr. Fowler hands down is the best vet I have come across period. He is a true country vet and is undaunted by figuring out what is going on with any animal. He cares about each animal he has treated for us. The other vets are nice, but if it is for anything out of routine, I always want Dr. Fowler. I called him Dr. Doolittle the last time he was out as he is very tuned in to figuring out what is going on. We were sorry to see Dr. Cheri Boehm leave for running a PetSmart Hospital-- she was young but gifted and would have made a good successor to Dr. Fowler when he eventually retires. I don't have that feeling for the other vets though they are nice. read more

I'm not from San Francisco. Don't know why Yelp identifies me as such. I placed a Maine Coon kitten with a couple who take their animals to this clinic. This kitten developed constipation issues and the advice and treatment he received is appalling. They never ran a full blood panel to find out if there was an underlying reason as to why he was getting constipated. They treated his constipation with crazy things such as goat's milk and tuna in oil. Are you kidding? The owners were so desperate that they wanted to euthanize him and fortunately I was able to get them to relinquish him back to me. His blood panel came back with low thyroid and we are exploring that as the reason for his issues. This vet did NOTHING to try and help this kitten other than give him enemas. When he came back to me has was so impacted that it is beyond belief. I'm so glad I have him back and he is being treated appropriately. This vet would have killed him. Don't take your cat to this vet. All the 1 star ratings are almost exclusively cat owners. read more

I have lived in Scappoose since 2004 and I used to take my animals to Midway. When they started getting new doctors, and they built their new hospital building, prices started going up. And every time I took one of my animals there.... they wanted to do a full panel of blood tests which cost $200+ per blood panel testing. The last time I took my cat in there, the doctor got so mad at us that he walked out and slammed the door because we refused to do the $200 worth of blood tests. I was so upset by this experience I did some research online to find the doctor that I used to see when I first started going to Midway. And I decided that I could take my cat to see her for further diagnosis. The blood panel at the other vet only cost $75 and they were able to determine that my cat had hyperthyroidism. She is now doing great and she's very healthy. PRIOR to that, my other cat who was diabetic, went into diabetic remission and I had to rush him to Midway because he was having seizures. They wanted to do an x-ray on him + a full blood panel, because their computer system had crashed and they lost all previous x-rays, since the computer system was not backed up. I told them I would do the blood panel, but I would NOT pay for an x-ray since they are the ones that lost the X-ray because they didn't have their computer system backed up. As it turned out, they did give me a free x-ray and everything was fine. They had to put my kitty on a glucose drip overnight, to help him recover from low blood sugar. But in the middle of the night, the needle shifted and went into his body, and they had to give him an antibiotic to guard against infection. After my Kitty recovered from that and I picked him up, I took him home and he seemed to be doing fine. I took him back several months later for a check-up and the vet there told me "point-blank" that she was surprised to see me with him because she didn't think he would still be alive after the last incident.??? Even if she felt this way, it was horrible bedside manner to tell the client that you were shocked to see that their kitty was still alive!! So between this experience and the other doctor that slammed the door because we would not pay $200+ for blood testing/panel for my Kitty, we decided to permanently move to the other Veterinary Clinic where my former veterinarian now works. Things are much better at the other Veterinarian Clinic, with our previous veterinarian that used to work at Midway. Not to mention.... when we wanted to get our puppy neutered, the price difference between Midway and our new Clinic was HUNDREDS of dollars!! This is because Midway wanted to do a blood panel that would have cost a minimum of $200 before even doing surgery on our puppy, to have him neutered. We had him neutered at the other clinic for a total of $80 Need I say more? read more

Please do not bring your beloved pets here. The majority of the staff are very rude and uninformed. This review is based on years of experiences with this vet, and comparing it with my experiences at other veterinarian clinics. I've been told misinformation, had serious pet health problems written off as nothing to worry about and then later been told by different vets that there are issues. The vet assistants are completely clueless and unsympathetic with animals and owners. We've been told to give our cat subque fluids once every week when really she should have been getting them every other day and her kidney disease got worse over the months we listened to midway's instructions. I buy subque fluids and needles here very often and almost every time they don't even look at my pet file and give me the wrong subque fluids and wrong needles. I wont step foot in this place ever again and neither should you. I recommend much better places in Hillsboro or Portland for the same price midway charges. Sometimes even cheaper. Every vet around here is just not up to par with Hillsboro and Portland area who actually know what they are doing and who are very kind and professional, vet assistants and veterinarians. I use exclusively Midway veterinary hospital. At various times, they have treated my horse, donkey, up to three dogs in a time, pet cats, and a feral cat. I have been really happy with their care and with staff. I admit having a weight frequently, but can also get an animal seen on the same day appointment when really necessary. They have euthanized all my animals who needed it - and have been very understanding and gentle with both me and the animal. If I feel I would like to see a specialist, they have given me some suggestions, and facilitated that (sending records, filling prescriptions, etc.). I tried to see one regular veterinarian who knows us both, and can generally work that out as long as it's not too quick. I am very happy with both my (!) and my animals care there. read more

Then took her back in for another ear infection, This time we seen dr jason nicholas, He did a inhouse chim 10 and gave hercephalexin 500 mgbenzoyl peroxide shampoo for a rash on her chin and 30 mg of predisone a day for 14 days needless to say she didnt make it 14 days and we had to take her back in they kept her and ran more tests witch was more money they kept her 2 days and she was only getting worse and weeker she at this point needed a blood transfusion and her organs were shutting down. Dr nicholas recomened euthanasia and that if we didnt we would only be making her suffer so we did, We went from a healthy pet to death in two weeks dont take your pets here if you love them because you might not take them home the way you brought them in.BEWARE THEY KILL PETS, dont let it happen to you. I love this place! We had to take our dog in for emergency services. He was older, a large dog, and became very listless all of a sudden. We got him in on an emergency basis. They were very thorough, running labs and doing a sonogram. It turned out he had liver cancer. Our choices were emergency surgery that may or may not help, or putting him down. We decided to end his suffering and to put him to sleep that day. They gave us the time to spend with him to say good bye, were very compassionate, and sent us his paw print in plaster of Paris later. I still treasure that paw print. read more

We just adopted to kittens from the humane society. Their adjustment to our home hasn't gone well, and suffering from diarrhea. This is my first time at this vet clinic. And I have to say I was really impressed. Right off the bat, the office staff was very friendly. The doctor was amazing! My two boys were with me (8 and 10). They were very curious, especially with her stethoscope. She was very patient with them, and actually allowed them to listen to their kitten's heartbeat. Taking time with our pet is expected, but taking the time with my kids, was pretty awesome. I will be coming back with all our pets. read more

Extremely expensive for a male cat to be neutered. They left the scrotum open, no stitches. After exactly two weeks (an incubation period for a virus), my only cat came down with the feline flu. We don't live in a neighborhood so he didn't come into contact with another cat. Only reason for that second star is because they actually neutered him. read more

This clinic was more concerned about getting paid then saving an animal. The estimate for the emergency my dog fonder him self in was upwards of $2000.00 dollars. They required the money before they would even stating working on my pet. I understand that this is a business but when time critical and the owner is already stressed. The staff should be a little more understanding. Dr Fowler was the worst of them all. Needless to say I got on my phone and was able to contact another vet close by that would work with me. Sadly not everything worked out well for my pet due to the time lost at Midway. He did survive but will never be what he was before. My total bill at the other clinic was $1045.90 that is almost 1/2 the cost and the dog required more care. If you find your looking for a new vet try Dr Robinson or Dr Reager at companion pet in Scappoose. Very nice staff and very understanding they truly care about the animal. They understand that if your animal gets hurt on a Tuesday and you don't get paid until Friday This does not mean you are going to stiff them. They simply took a post dated check. read more

Little background first: My Mother passed away couple of years ago. My 86 year old father is still living on their farm by himself. Other than his family, his only true comfort came from his only farm cat, whom every day Dad and his cat were each other's best buddies. On November 25th Dad let us know his best buddy was ill and needed to go see a vet. We went to Midway (cat in tow) to see if they could squeeze us in for a quick look at the cat. The person at the entry desk was on the phone (no problem) and just waved at us to wait. Once off the phone she looked downright mean at us and said in a snotty way "Can I help you?". We explained the problem and she snottily said that if they did look at the cat there would be a $ 65.00 fee plus any tech time fees ($ 2.25 a minute). However since it was Noon, the fee raises to $ 115.00 plus tech time fees. Then on top of that were any procedure fees such as x-ray, blood work, etc. I get that a business can charge what they want. That wasn't the problem. I can't express enough that all the time she said this in an extremely snotty way. In other words, we got the feeling she could care less about our cat and even less about us. Business must be very good for them..... In the veterinary business, I would hope that compassion is everything, as people love their pets and losing them or seeing them hurt is at times traumatic. We ended up going to St. Helens Veterinary Clinic who squeezed us in and was extremely compassionate and helpful. Sadly, we had to put the cat down because nothing could be done for him. The vet came out, spent about 15 minutes with us talking about the situation and what she would do if it were her cat. Bottom line the vet charged us $65.00 for the DR exam and putting the cat down. They put him in a nice box when we picked him up so we could bury him. Fees aside, the Midway receptionist was one of the most UN-compassionate persons we have ever met, and did not set a good impression of that business in any way, shape or form! read more

I took my dog in for the first time for vaccinations. I waited 10 minutes beyond my appointment time in the waiting room. Once roomed, I waited another 15 minutes for the vet. She seemed very good with my dog. However, I noticed that she did not introduce herself to me. After the appointment, I waited another 15 minutes to get checked out. The front desk seemed disorganized and busy. They did not seem to have streamlined processes that could improve customer service. The prices seemed high. I intend to look elsewhere. read more

I love my vet here in Portland, but with their overhead expenses their costs are on the high side and I just could NOT afford their rates for teeth cleanings for my 2 pugs. All I know is anything I have ever asked of Midway's staff and doctors, I have received. I have two Cavaliers and they aren't allowed to be taken anywhere but Midway. Dr. Gold has worked diligently and compassionately to correct a genetic flaw on male and did not charge for the additional corrective surgeries. Dr. Snyder allowed me to lose my mind and leave the clinic crying after my neighbor dropped my brand new puppy. Aaaaand the staff. Super nice. Super understanding. Super engaging. Super helpful. I will never bring my animals here again. It's close by for emergencies and the quality used to be much better which is why I liked it, but in the last two or three years it's gotten so bad that I wonder if the doctors are even medically trained. We had a cat who chewed on something and damaged her mouth. At the time we had no idea what happened, only that she was drooling ropes of saliva from her mouth and wouldn't eat so we rushed her here. It was very bad. The vet that saw her looked into her mouth and said that she didn't see any damage, then gave her some antibiotics and fluids and sent her home, saying simply that it should fix her up. Not even a blood test to check for poisons!!! I have no idea what they were thinking. They did do the blood test the next day because (of course) nothing had changed and it ended up not being poison, but if it had been then she could have died simply to their carelessness. I won't go into any more detail except to say that after checking a bunch of things their weekend vet, not the one she'd been going to, said that yes, there were blisters in her mouth and she had probably gotten into something. I took my cat into Midway for an annual check-up, shots, and worm medicine as she is an indoor/outdoor cat. Last year we had the same appointment set for her which went very well. However, this time the vet assistant administered the shots, rather than the doctor. The assistant tried to give the worm medicine to the cat, but was unsuccessful with getting the pills in the cats mouth. Not only were we disappointed that the cat didn't get her worm medicine, but her gums appeared torn after the two assistants tried to get her to swallow it. Obviously, the cat was very upset by the multiple attempts. To make matters even worse the alternative was to buy topical worm medicine which was an additional cost to the annual fee we were going to pay. The annual visit was supposed to cost $120 for everything, but the topical medicine was $20 per use, adding an additional $240 for a year supply (the pills would have covered the whole year). Overall, I felt penalized because the staff was unable to do their job especially since my cat is not difficult, and the vet was able to give her pills last year. In addition to this disappointment we were given another rabies certificate when we were paying the bill, which stated that the cat was vaccinated for another 3 years. To my dismay, the clinic administered a vaccination that the cat did not need as we got the same thing last year. Overall, I felt we both suffered by the experience - the cat got vaccinated for something she did not need, but did not get the meds she does need AND my bill was triple the cost. The bill included the additional meds but they did not take anything off for the worm medicine which she did not get even though I asked twice if it was taken off the bill. Lastly, both times we were in to visit we have had to wait 20 minutes before being seen after our appointment time. Thus, I am sure there are much better places to take your pet. If they cant manage to do this very simple thing like administer medicine, what happens when something serious happens to your pet? read more

I have used Midway for several years now for my dogs and horses. I have only great experiences no matter what. From basic horse care, to major dog surgery, to emergency care, they are always there for me and my pets are grateful of them. I highly recommend them. read more
