I personally do not like the location of the restaurant because it's off a highway in a plaza that can be quickly overlooked. Luckily, the design on the inside creates a really nice ambiance that makes up for the restaurant sometimes being really empty. Sushi and sushi rolls are pretty expensive, but that's expected. However, if you order the bento box it's not too bad (~$15) and has a ton of sushi. Sundays they have all day happy hour: I had agadashi tofu and a rainbow roll. Overall, I was pleased with my visit. I've been eating here since they opened, except for the last two years while I was away. Had dinner there Friday night 1/09/09, and as I noted in other people's reviews, the quality has declined. Musashino has always had better fish - no question on that, but Mikado was a good alternative with a cool setting, subtle grooves playing in the background, and good food. Last night, I had salmon, yellowtail, scallop, mackerel, and a few other pieces of sushi. In the past, the mackerel here had a well-balanced marinade that preserved a muted essence of this oily fish. Not so much last night... it wasn't overbearing, but it wasn't subtle, either. Likewise for the scallop. Fresh, they are incredibly tender with a hint of the ocean. Last night's was slightly past prime. Blech. The salmon and yellowtail were acceptable - fresh but nothing to write home (or yelp) about. Black tobiko was also decent. Rice: sushi rice should have a bit of vinegar, a bit of sweetness. The rice this night was neither, just plain, very noticeable instead of a pleasant counterpart to the fish. Sushi... Whole Foods and Central Market sell it, and it's better than a whopper jr., but I have higher expectations for Mikado. Theirs is better than the stuff at the grocery stores, but not for the price and setting, and not considering the quality in the past. 3 stars, and I'll try again later because I have good memories of better food. read more

I tried their peppered calamari, which was meh, there was no tasty and it came with a mayo saraicha dipping sauce, def basically says not the best tasting item, gonna cover taste with this really bad sauce. I ordered 2 pieces of their spicy scallops and it is the worst thing ever! I've worked within restaurant business long enough to know that the scallops they served me was bad, like there was that bad tasty/smell to the scallops and I tasted it despite the mayo and saraicha sauce they mixed the scallops in. Maybe its not a popular item, but they should really keep up with the quality of their food! Oof, this is a tough one to rate. I very much enjoyed the food, but our service was so bafflingly terrible it literally had us laughing. We ended up here because of a sushi craving and too-long waits at the places I would normally go, and decent reviews made it seem like a good back-up. It was pretty dead, maybe 20% full - but we still had to wait 10 minutes for a table to be cleared for us for some reason. Our server was nice enough, but from the beginning it was one frustration after another: empty water glasses for 15 minutes at a time, dishes coming in wrong orders or just forgotten until he was later reminded, and the sushi itself that took something like an hour to reach us. When the people at your table start making jokes about how the chef must have needed to go fishing, then the food is taking too long. Especially on what seemed like an off night. All that said, everything tasted quite good and the sushi was excellent. Not a lot of places with great robata, and with the Sunday happy hour prices we ate quite well for a certainly reasonable price. What I had: APPETIZERS - Gyoza - For some reason, I always wanna try it, like as a barometer for the quality of the establishment in general (even though, even in Japan, gyoza can be be hit-or-miss, not universally awesome). That said, I order this and was actually IMPRESSED! I really enjoyed the pork gyoza. The gyoza itself was really tasty, and the vinegar-based sauce that accompanied it complimented them very nicely. I would order this again. SUSHI - Spicy Tuna Roll - Meh, it was good, a little better than decent, but not much. I think I would skip this in the future. - Buddha Roll - I really enjoyed this! I mean, wasn't totally exciting, but it wasn't overly chewy and had enough crunch to be enjoyable. It was one of the most exciting veggie rolls I've had. - Teresa - THIS! THIS I WOULD GET AGAIN! Don't discount this place just because it's out in the burbs. Even if you're a downtown dweller, give this place a shot when you want some good sushi. It's a short drive away and parking is plentiful and free. The food is great, with creative rolls and dishes but they have all the traditional stuff as well like nigiri and sashimi. The service is excellent too. Also, the place is owned by locals. It means your money stays local and doesn't go to some corporate office in another state. Let the angels sing!!! Finally after moving to Austin I discovered a shining gem... Mikado! Other restaurants like Akira in Round Rock really need to pay attention here! 5 stars for quality of dishes in taste, freshness, and flavor as well as the service from the sushi chefs, the wait staff and the manager. The ambiance is great... There's a spot for everyone in the restaurant; dining on your own, for 2, romance or business and for large groups. Its clean, organized and peaceful (great colors and excellent lighting). I loved the pineapple sake and the sashimi selection was great too. Awesome unique touches. The only issue I probably had was I could never get enough sashimi. I'm a sushi snob from San Francisco Bay with favs like: Jin Sho Executive Class Japanese Cuisine & Fuki Sushi in near Stanford, Joy in San Mateo, Blue Fin in San Jose, and Ocean Blue in Sunnyvale, last but not least Blow Fish @ Santana Row. With this great restaurants like Mikado will sure increase their fan base! Waitress: yes please do I can't begin to write down everything he told me about the selection, where and when they get each item. I was just BLOWN AWAY IMPRESSED! The attention to detail, VERY QUALIFIED SUSHI CHEF and the CUSTOMER SERVICE. WOW!!! So I had an extensive conversation with the chef and ordered items that were what I call twist off the menu! And yummy to my tummy! Literally everything we ordered and have ordered each time we dine there has been wonderful, so delish and VERY FRESH! On my recent trip to Austin, I had seen that a highly recommended restaurant was recently trashed with horrible reviews on yelp, and so I decided to pay this restaurant a visit and see for myself. For starters, the restaurant has a very nice look to it. It has the traditional Japanese restaurant style look, but with a more modern spin to it. It is very clean and has an inviting and comforting aura about it. The server was very nice and knowledgeable. It was obvious she had studied the menu and dishes very well. She was smart enough to know not to interrupt your conversation while you're eating, but was always there when you needed her. However, the most important part of any restaurant experience is the food, and Mikado Ryotei does not disappoint. From the Peppered Calamari to the Nagano Duck V.S.O.P. to the maguro sashimi, everything we had was fresh, tasty, and well worth it. After eating, I wasn't ready to leave yet. I still wondered where all the negative reception came from, and so I asked to speak with the manager himself. It seems the recent outbreak of negative reception was created by the wave of laid-off employees. It's very obvious, though, seeing as how most of them have only reviewed one restaurant on yelp ever. I will start this off by saying that the service was great. We were a very large group and our server kicked ass. He is worth three stars alone. I wish I knew his name so i could call the owner and tell them to give the guy a raise. Friendly, courteous, and on point. Excellent job. The food was good... but for the price? No thanks. I can get just as full over a DK for a fraction of the cost. Plus, the sushi at DK's is a lot more tender and delicious. Some of the bits of Nigiri I had at Mikado were a bit tough. It was good. I would eat here again. Went for the first time last week. I have to say, it is nice inside. I liked the wall art, the huge sticks of bamboo, and the dark wood furniture. That being said, the women's bathroom needs a little bit of a makeover- the stall doors are all busted up. It looks like someone got a beat down in there. I got the spider roll and a piece of salmon sushi. The spider roll was good, but nothing amazing. I was disappointed with the salmon. My take on this restaurant is that its two best qualities are a very pleasing interior design as well as a friendly and attentive staff. While these are both great features for a dining establishment to posess, there not the ones that keep me coming back. My girlfriend and I split three rolls and also an order of maguro sashimi. I've only eaten here for lunch, but their lunch specials are high-quality and very fairly priced. I usually get one of their sushi combo lunches, but the bento boxes are really good too. I used to love this place. It was a bit pricey, but the fish was great and the presentation was lovely. Skip forward about 4 years. The last few times I've been here, the waitstaff was slow - one time was a waiter's first night and with confusion over which tables were his, we waited over 30 minutes, just to get water to our table. The food has become so so. I used to think it was just slightly below Uchi, but now, I'd recommend going somewhere else (like Maru) for good, fresh and tasty sushi. The restaurant is beautiful though. It has great atmosphere. I really don't think I'll be going back, though. Pretty restaurants are great for first dates and special occasions, but even then, i wouldn't want to go here for that, as i can get better food somewhere else. My husband and I have been huge fans of Mikado for several years now. It's my second favorite sushi restaurant in Austin. The thing that I love about Mikado is that it has great sushi as well as inventive appetizers (and the miso is wonderful). We also never leave here without ordering the "Mushroon Package." It is DIVINE. Love the Crunchy Kazi roll- it's our favorite. And the escholar sashimi is amazing. The sake is expensive, but let me tell you, if you have never tried a bottle of the Pride of the Village, you are really missing out. It's a standard bottle that they've had for years. I highly recommend starting on some food first. Have one round of sushi, then crack open the bottle. I've found that it's much better once you've had at least a bit of sushi- it complements it well. This sake has more layers to it than most wines that I've tried. I can't stress enough how amazing this bottle is. The service has always been wonderful here. The decor is modern but has an organic feel. The music is usually very trendy electronica which gives the atmosphere a very swanky upscale vibe. Everything pulls together very nicely. read more

Wonderful little spot in a sketchy looking strip. As a young woman, I'd stick to coming here when there's light out. Place is open & inviting. Met a friend here to catch up & we were seated at the sushi bar as requested. It was confusing to order because the hostess was also our server & when ordering with the sushi chef, he called out our order to her. She didn't seem to know the drink menu that well & even was surprised when she found out they offered a peach jelly sake. This drink was brought out in a can & our server struggled to squeeze out the contents into a flute glass in front of us for presentation. These are cans that I'm confident I can find at the many local oriental supermarkets. My friend & I decided to stick with sushi, we order 4 specialty rolls: the Shaggy Dog, Fiery Kiss, Tiger Eye & the Longhorn. Each roll was delicious & of great quality. Try the delicious and tender Hamachi collar to start - we also had the scallops, which were good but not memorable, and crispy, gooey tofu -- like a toasted marshmallow. I had the nigri combo, which was great. Friends had the sea bass, the Hottie Susan and the Chorishi's Fire, all washed down with about a six-pack of Sapporo. As far as their apps, i love their Miso soup, seaweed salad, Gyoza is to die for. i also love their tempura shrimp and veggies. at lunch they have bento boxes to choose from as well as entrees and the Marinated Chilean Sea Bass has the most wonderful flavor. (My favorite also). Their fish is very fresh. I've tried the nigiri and the super white tuna is so good and also one of my fav's. My favorite roll is the Ben's roll. It has it all and it's so big! The Hottie Susan is also a must try. I've tried most of their rolls and they were all delicious and served with such an artful flair. I love the ambiance here. Real subdued and laid back, you'll feel right at home here and the service is impeccable. Marie was my server the last time I was here and she was so delightful. Attentive; she would come around to check on me at the right times. The more I come here the more I love it. The owner always makes me feel special when I come in. They appreciate their guests and always look forward to their return. The restrooms are always clean and comfortable.
