So far, the best Sushi I've had in Austin. (I've heard of Uchi but haven't gone there, yet) I've had sushi in Chicago, California and Korea. I would consider my taste for sushi to be average, I don't get anything too exotic and I appreciate the freshness of a nice cut of raw fish. When I first moved down here, I was always afraid to try the sushi in central Texas. Mikado eased my worries a bit. It isn't the best I've ever had but it was certainly good. Fish was fresh, and cuts were semi-generous. Presentation was decent, too. The ambiance of the place is nice, quiet and a good date place. This isn't a habachi grill, I'd try elsewhere if you have kids that love to create a scene in public places. It's a business casual type of place. My favorite sushi place, though, not by much. Tried it on the recommendation of a co-worker after a friend requested sushi while he was in town for the holidays. Highlights: The grilled tuna collar. Seriously delicious. I'm not aware of many restaurants in Austin that serve this, but if there are others please let me know. More people need to eat this...screw fillet. My seabass entree was great, and surprisingly a lot of food for the price (came with salad, miso soup, and a roll). Two friends had sushi and rolls, both said they were delicious. Grilled sea scallops and fried tofu at the start were also well done. Overall a very solid Japanese restaurant that doesn't require you to trek south/downtown for a good meal. My only small gripes were that it's in kind of a weird location, and no full bar. But I'd pick this place over the Uchi-ripoff in the arboretum any day. read more

The sushi is decent. Better than a lot of the sushi joints in a similar price range. Excellent happy hour on Sundays. My biggest complaint would be the service. Not all of the servers are bad. There are only two that irk me. One of the servers bothers me only because she is a "close talker." She's practically In my lap every time she talks to me. Whatever. Could be worse. I dont remember her name, so I'll move on. The other server that bothers me is the one I really can't stand. I've had her a few times now. I think her name is Devin or Kevin, or something like that. The Caucasian server with the long medium toned brown hair. I'm her age, maybe a few years older, yet she calls me "honey," or "sweetheart." Does she not realize how condescending this sounds?!?! She is always slow with her service, and completely inattentive. I've watched my food sit there on the counter for what seems like an eternity before she notices it's there. This is the norm with her, not an occasional happening. Also, drink your water slowly, because she'll only ask if you'd like a refill after you ask for the check. And, you do have to ask. You have to flag her, or a manager, down. And forget about her bringing you your change in a reasonable amount of time, even if you're one of only two tables in there. To sum it all up: Sushi- pretty good Happy Hour- excellent Price- reasonable Service- avoid Devin or Kevin (or whatever her name is that sounds similar to those) if you want a good dining experience. read more

Gone to many places in Austin for sushi - and trust me this is my favorite. I'm newer to yelp so I'm not sure how well people will like my personal opinions on things - but I must say - this is my favorite in Austin. Ben's Roll is not on the menu - I was there with a friend one night and our waitress was very friendly - she described a list of rolls that werent even on the menu! It came out on a huge platter - consisted of some warm eel in the middle and heaven on top. I cant say I've had eel before this -but now I love it. The Sashmi was fresh - no taste is always a good thing - no one likes old rank fish. Generous portions, well wrapped rolls and a great establishment. I used to love this place. Somehow it's lost it's touch. I used to come in for the happy hour specials because, hey, I love eating at less busy times when I eat. Anyways, this will detail my last and final experience at Mikado. Seating and atmosphere is always good here (although I have never been during dinner). I started off with a miso soup. What i got was barely even lukewarm, and I almost gagged at the taste. Oh well, let's try and keep going because I wanted delicious sushi. I ordered a couple rolls and two pieces of mackerel nigiri. That, I regret a thousand times. The taste was beyond salty, and way too fishy. (Yes, I know what you're thinking "Duh it's fish", but his fish had sailed past it's expiration much too long ago.) If you eat sushi from HEB and think it's good, then you will not like this place... don't waste your money on the good sushi you'll find here. There's no "sushi happy hour". It's just good sushi and good prices. I don't understand the reviews from people complaining that the rice ball is too small and the fish is too big. Do you seriously want less fish and more rice in your nigiri? You do realize that the fish is the good part, right? I've been twice and have had several of the rolls. The "Sushi Chef's Choice" is decently priced ($22) and has seven nigiri pieces plus a roll and will actually make you feel full after eating, which is always tough for sushi to do. I even enjoyed the tempura vegetables which tasted very fresh and didn't have the oily greasiness that can plague tempura sometimes. read more

Here ye! Here ye! Let it be known by all gathered today that I do not like sushi. My boss, someone who is completely unwilling to believe he is wrong about anything, insisted on taking a group of us from the office to sushi so that we could learn the error of our ways. It's impossible that I don't like sushi, apparently. That being said, Mikado Ryotei has some of the better sushi I've eaten here in Austin. I tried the White Tuna, Fatty Tuna, Red Snapper and Fried Eel. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box which featured California Rolls (imitation crab). Everything was very fresh and the fish melted in my mouth. The service was perfect - quick without being rushed, knowledgable while never appearing condescending, kind without being salesperson-like. The decor was nice and calming. The music was like being in a gay club in Germany - very strange. That being said, I still don't like sushi. It's not my thing and I would appreciate it if everyone who loves sushi would stop trying to tell me I am wrong about this. I'm not wrong. I don't like fish. I don't like seaweed. I don't like crab or imitation crab. Wasabi leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's just not my thing. That being said - if sushi is your thing - you will love Mikado Ryotei. read more

Came here on New Year's Eve for a light dinner. At 8pm, there was no wait at all. The fish was really high quality. Unfortunately most of the rolls came smothered in spicy sauce, were deep fried, or didn't even have raw fish. I get that Texans don't always like raw fish, but a little variety would be nice. They do have a couple of rolls with just fish and cucumber (salmon and tuna). We had the hottie Susan which was too spicy, the Spider roll which was a little boring, and the negihama roll which was delicious. We also ordered 4 pieces of Nigiri. The super white tuna was amazing! But I've had better hamachi and Alex P said the saba was pretty bad. The ambiance was pretty upscale, with a big screen TV playing football. Not really my style. The ladies were pretty dressed up, and some men were in slacks. The lighting made it feel a lot like a chic lounge. I will say that for how fancy it was, you could get by with a $$ meal, but it would be pretty difficult. Their "tapas-style" entres were 25-35 each. We managed to get sushi (no drinks) and one appetizer for $60. We sat at the sushi bar and which we were deciding to order, one of the sushi chefs yelled at another chef and preceded to brood for the rest of our meal. Bad form. The sushi chef also had the balls to tell me what the difference between nigiri and sashimi was when I asked what the specials were. Finally, beware of crappy service when sitting at the sushi bar. It took them way too long to get our check and then pick it up. I even had to shove the card in her face to get her to pick it up and explicitly ask for a hot tea refill. In summary, good fish, crappy menu, weird service, and overly fancy ambience for my tastes. I doubt I'll be back. read more

I ordered the Hottie Susan, and my boyfriend ordered the rest (he knows way more about sushi and sake than I do, so I usually let him take care of it for me). Everything was outstanding. We asked for a dry sake (I don't like sweet very much) and they brought out a sake I fell in love with. The presentation of the sushi was beautiful. Boyfriend has become a regular here and been dying to take me. Finally had a chance while I was visiting to have a taste.We ordered a bit more than we could handle, but it was all worth it. Service was impeccable! Our server Tenki checked on us periodically to make sure we enjoyed our food, and checked the bar stock to make sure our drink orders were to par. We ordered: Agedashi tofu - so flavorful and the salmon skin flakes were so tasty I picked every single flake I could find swimming in the delicious sauce Walu kosho - omg. Some of the most amazing escolar I've tasted. Sashimi (escolar, salmon, spicy scallops, Hokkaido scallops, and albacore) -- we saved the escolar and albacore for last and it was just melting in our mouths. Make sure to rinse your palate in between to fully enjoy it all! Kyoto roll - just the right amounts of flavor from the fish and spiciness Mikado - lots of texture with this fried roll but it was really good. read more

If I could give half stars, I would give this place 3.5 stars. Starting with the positives, the salmon sashimi was pretty fresh and tasty. The pieces were large enough and slightly chilled. My friend ordered the miso sea bass which was tasty. Would order both these dishes again. Fish was cooked okay, not overcooked. Food presentation was aesthetically pleasing. The decor is nice, but I found the restaurant to be freezing. We ordered beef tataki, thin raw slices of beef slightly seared on the edges. It came in a martini glass with some ponzu sauce with lemon. The beef just didn't go well with the sauce. The meat tasted plastic-y to me, and the ponzu sauce was too tangy. My entree was the cooked salmon which looked nice but was overcooked. Seemed over priced at $18. The entrees also came with five pieces of sushi that seemed to be battered and deep fried in a wasabi sauce. A bit dry and bland. FYI, the entrees come with miso soup and salad. They were okay. I've had better miso soup and Japanese style salad. Just something didn't feel authentic about these. They also charge for hot green tea. Overall, for the prices, I wasn't impressed. read more

I guess the decor is pretty nice and all, but I'm more interested in the food. The place would probably frown on me eating the lucky cat or the black napkins. We went on Monday around 1, not terribly crowded by that time. You'd think that would make the service better since the waitstaff wasn't busy. You'd think it, but you'd be wrong. Our waitress greeted us and got us our drinks, then proceeded to ignore us for a good ten minutes while she waited on two tables that came in after us that were composed of Asian diners. Favoritism reigns. Then she jacked up our order. We got the tuna tartari and wanted a SPIDER roll. She heard SPECIAL roll. I guess they have one sound in common, but not the whole thing certainly. And oh by the way, the Special roll was an extra four bucks. The tuna was really dang good, not gonna lie. It redeemed the meal somewhat. The roll was somewhat special, but nothing mind blowing and again, not what we wanted. I think I'll be looking for no-pretense sushi the next time I get a hankering. read more

So, I guess I'm the first to award Mikado a pair of stars. Although I'm not interested in going back, I wouldn't try and persuade someone else from trying it out. Something appeared to be wrong with everything we had. Here's the breakdown... Miso soup? They weren't served with spoons, which is fine, but the bowls were way to friggin' hot to pick up and drink! When we asked for spoons, they gave us regular dinner spoons instead of the typical ceramic Japanese soup spoons. This wasn't really bad, just the first weird thing I noticed about our meal. Salmon skin roll? The pieces were too big to be single bites considering how chewy the salmon skin was. If I was going to make this roll, I'd lose the nori and cut the amount of rice and salmon skin down just a bit. It'd be much more manageable and pleasant to eat. Sunomuno? The menu describes it as having a "light soy vinaigrette." I absolutely love squid/seaweed salads, which come with a dressing typically of the same name, so I figured I would love this. It tasted exactly like pickle juice! Who on earth would enjoy that? And why the F would you call it "light soy vinaigrette?" The shrimp and octopus on it were fine, but the cuddlefish looked like whoever was preparing it just wasn't paying attention to their work. I'm a little irked at myself because I didn't send this back. Baked Salmon? Fine, but I've had it a LOT better (Sushi Hana in San Antonio for instance). And why did they put a bed of raw cucumber underneath baked fish? Moderately warm raw cucumber is NOT appealing. The Ebi 2 roll? Flavor was typical for this recipe, although, again, it was rolled way too thick which made for unpleasant experience trying to choke it down, piece by piece. After all this, I was still hungry, but didn't want to blow more money on dishes that had such a low probability of coming out of the kitchen properly. The restaurant had more families in it than I expected, and the table next to us consisted of a fussy dad, a silent trophy wife, and two little kids that belonged at home. Although they were annoying during our entire meal (they referring to the dad and 4yo daughter), the mess they left behind was unbelievable. Three staff members came and cleared the table, only to reveal a nasty slush of solids and liquids covering the table. Did someone puke? Did the kids shred their Krab sticks and celebrate fiesta a little early? I wish I knew. Anyway, the reason I'm mentioning this story... when the staff's supply of kitchen rags couldn't soak up any more of the mess, THEY JUST LEFT IT, and reset the table with chopsticks/napkins/candle/etc right on top of what was left! WTF?! That said, our own service was great, but I don't plan on venturing away from my bar stool at Tomo again anytime soon. read more

Seriously. This is my favorite place in Austin for sushi. Plain ol' slab of fish on rice sushi. It is awesome. (But don't ask me about the rolls...I have no idea.) The pieces of fish are large and always fresh. The prices are very reasonable. I like Mikado a bit more than Tomo (slightly further north) and loads better than the sushi at DK (way south) and the prices at Mikado are about the same as the other two (for sushi at least). Service is good. Atmosphere is dim and cozy. It's never crowded. And if you're with a non-sushi eater, they have plenty of other options on the menu. Tasty, tasty fish. I literally look for excuses to get up this way just to eat here. If this place was closer to my house, I would probably be here at least once a month. Love! read more

We came here for lunch on a weekend, so we were limited to choosing from the dinner menu. The entrees all seemed a little on the heavy side for lunch, so we opted to choose an appetizer for our lunch instead, since they have Chicken Katsu and Vegetable Tempura as appetizers, but not entrees. Go figure. We just added on a bowl of rice, to which they added a little bit of furikake (seasoning mix which usually includes seaweed, sesame seeds, and other flavors). It was a nice touch. We also had some sushi. The restaurant is run by Cantonese people. The food was pretty good, but it was pretty empty on a weekend afternoon. It's probably a better deal to come for a weekday lunch or perhaps dinner. read more

This place is just soooooo much better than any other japanese food or sushi in Austin. Having spent a lot of time on the pacific I think I know something about what a sushi joint *should* be, and this is easily the best in Austin. It's a gorgeous room, everything on the menu is good, and the service is near perfect. This visit I'd say the seaweed salad and the snapper sashimi were the winners; but it's really hard to pick a best. I think I've had most everything they offer and it's all good. The hand rolls are fresh and delicious and beautifully presented... Guys, if you're wanting to really blow away your date then this is the place! Oh, also, if you want something pretentious and wanna-be-classy, then not here. The place is quiet, clean, genuine, and delightfully NOT just another local attempt to be city. A friend recommended we try this for lunch because I mentioned I hadn't had Sushi since I left Cali, 5 months ago. Mostly because I was worried, with Austin being so hot and landlocked, where is this fish coming from? Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised to see this trendy little place tucked away on the corner of 183 and Burnett. The staff was very friendly and atmosphere was very inviting. The sushi prices were what I expected for quality fish. However I was surprised at the size of the pieces. Texas sized sushi! Very tasty as well. So overall, very good experience and very fresh tasting sushi. I'll definitely be returning when I need my sushi needs satisfied. read more

The quality of sushi was fantastic; the prices were pretty steep, and I wouldn't recommend it for more than two people based on my experience. But! The waitress we dined with was awesome; she was amiable and hilarious and engaged in banter with us but didn't do that whole linger-and-make-awkward-forced-conversation thingy. They also apparently participate in a rewards system which I haven't used yet, but the fact that they have it is pretty cool. Ooh, and their green tea was phenomenal. All in all I definitely enjoyed Mikado. The interior is really nice and the service was very good. We ordered pieces, rolls and the tuna tataki. I liked the roll Hottie Susan, which is basically the same as the Spicy Susan at Sushi Sake - but less slathered in spicy sauce (a plus for me but maybe a minus if you love the sauce more than the fish). The Tuna Tataki was really good and I thought my pieces were very good with one exception. I ordered the $10 piece of fatty tuna and it was still WAY too cold - almost frozen. I let it sit for a while, but if I'm paying $10 for a small piece of raw fish I expect it to be put on my plate ready to eat. But in general I thought the sushi was better than most (not better than Uchi, of course). I would recommend it if you were looking for good sushi plus nice decor and good service. read more

Mikado is delicious, has lots of elbow room between tables, a calming interior and a great big parking lot. The specials of the day are presented in a very interesting way as well. They are written in Japanese on wooden tiles presented on a slanted wooden stand. Even though I cannot read Japanese I still enjoy looking at it. read more

Great sushi place- I was thoroughly impressed. The decor is really nice, kind of dark but not pitch black. Very artsy and modern, and it definitely enhanced the dining experience. Their miso soup was great, and it had sliced mushrooms in it, which is something I've never had before in my miso soup. My date and I ordered three rolls and shared them- the spicy salmon roll, the Philadelphia roll and the Spider roll. The spicy salmon was GREAT, the Philadelphia was good, it's one that has cream cheese in it and they put a little too much, but it's a delicate art. The Spider roll was also good, it had fried soft-shelled crab. The service was outstanding as well and it even came with a little piece of candy at the end of the meal! All in all, it was a great Japanese place and I'd encourage anyone to check it out. read more

Every restaurant has its up and down time. This place is a lil pricy but I have been here so many time. The presentation and taste of the food is absolutely divine. This place is the first place is the first Chinese-owned restaurant that makes edible Japanese sushi. Great spirits selection. Sushi is a must here. My favorites are the Crunchy Kazi Roll, Mango Hamatchi, and Spicy Tuna. I wonder if this place has happy hours? I think they have lunch specials (I only been here for lunch once). Mikado does a great job of coming through with quality sushi and that slightly-upscale feel...but for some reason I always leave the place feeling like I've just had an average experience. It could be its location, or its price, or its thin lack of character.....but something about the place never pushes it onto my favorite sushi list.
