I grew up in Nacogdoches and loved going to Mike's bbq. However, the last time I went home - things were different. The food didn't tasted as seasoned as it was in the past... but the main thing was... the lack of cleanliness! I had to go to the restroom and one of the employees had it occupied. I waited, but I was surprised at how the restrooms were kept (spider webs in the window, door latch broken, trash full. There were two sinks and I wondered...which sink did the employee use... well.. I checked both sinks and they were completely dry!!! MEANING... she did NOT wash her hands and went straight behind the counter and started helping serving food! Totally disgusting!!! Now, when I go back home...I will have to find another place to eat out. read more

We had bad luck at the Barbecue House so we decided to try this place. They have the same menu and the owners are apparently brothers. Anyway. Same type of issue. Grabbed a tray. Went to ordering the food. As we were moving along I saw the kitchen door was open. There was a guy with a huge tub of potato salad. He was mixing it up. Then I looked up above him, and on the ceiling above him was an orange fly strip like you use in a cattle barn, hanging above this tub of potato salad. I told the wife and pointed to it. My wife and I use to eat at the other location on North Steet way back when we in college here. It had been years since we had been in Nacogdoches, but events brought us back, and we were determined to go back and hit this place up (the original had closed years ago). The town has changed considerably since we went to school here, but finding this location was easy as it is on the main road. Parking is easy as they have a big lot, and we were able to get near the entrance. We walked in and memories came flooding back. We knew exactly what we wanted to order, chopped beef for me, and chopped pork for my wife. Unfortunately, they were out of her pork today, so my wife ended up with the chopped beef too. Service was friendly, quick, and efficient. Orders were placed and food was delivered quickly. As we had one of our dogs with us waiting in the car, we had to take the food to go. We could have eaten inside as the weather was unseasonably cold for this time of year, but we couldn't do that to our dog. The sandwich was just as I remembered and still tasted like they used the same seasoning and sauce (that's a good thing). In this day of high prices, we found the prices to be very reasonable (although it was much higher than when we were in school-lol. Will I return? If I am ever back in Nacogdoches, no doubt that you will find me coming here. read more

I guess I should have looked at reviews first. I was in town and craving some BBQ since I was in Texas. Most of the staff was very friendly and helpful. The person who looked and acted like the owner was not friendly and didn't care when a different customer had an issue. For the food the smallest amount of brisket meat on a small hamburger bun. The sauce had no flavor and was a bit watery. The beans weren't great but nothing bad to say. The cajun rice was terrible had no flavor and was very cold. Notified an employee and they thanked me for letting them know about the rice, they thanked me but didn't offer to replace or anything. For a positive they had a great baked potato. read more

Being from Utah, whenever I visit Texas I crave BBQ. The staff are nice but seemed like they had something else they needed to do as I ordered. I had the brisket that had no flavor except for the sauce they put on for you with out asking. It was dry and chewy. The hot link had no heat but a lot of sauce on it. ;) They were out of pork so they pulled one off "the pit" for me and brought it out to my table for me.It was cold and just slices chunks of pork. I am sure it came out of a fridge rather then a pit. Again all I could taste was the sauce it was smothered in. The dirty rice seems like it was old with hardened grains. I ordered slaw but I am not sure what they gave me. Overall the food was generic at best and tasted like it. I was disappointed that I had gone there. read more

I would not recommend. I ordered the two meat plate with brisket and pork. The brisket was dry and the pork was very fatty and had a very off, rancid taste to it. So bad that I spit it out and couldn't continue eating. The bbq sauce was not tasty and very watery. The baked beans looked like they had been sitting there all day and tasted like canned beans covered in bbq sauce. The Cajun rice was gross, they definitely need a lesson or two on making that dish. Boxed Cajun rice from your local grocery store tastes better. All of the meat was also cold. We bought 2 of the two meat plates. 2 pieces of very small catfish that fit in a small fry container, a French fry and 3 drinks. The total came to $43 and change. Very overpriced! I got the rib plate and all of my rib where among the best cuts of meat I've seen. The ribs were lean, tasty and cooked very good. However I'm only giving three stars because the house bbq sauce is not that good bad enough that I asked for another sauce. They did not have any options so it's a bbq place with only one bad bbq sauce: very disappointing. read more

Dude...unless you're hard up for the flavor of BBQ Sauce, go to Sonic. Returning from a week long canoe trip in the Ozarks and finally got back to Texas with a Hankerin' for some bbq. The preferred stop was closed for Spring Break, so we Googled the next closest BBQ place and this place came up. Had a high rating too, which makes my review kind of contradictory. I was with 5 other adults, and 13 teenagers, all from my neck of the woods and all adults BBQ cookers and eaters like me. PROS: 1. Friendly Staff 2. Great BBQ atmosphere 3. Decent Sweet Tea 4. Fast Service 5. Turkey was flavorful 6. Fries were tasty 7. Plenty of seating CONS: 1. Food was heated in a microwave when ordered 2. Self serve Cobbler was room temperature 3. Sandwiches are small. (Ordered a Turkey sandwich and it was on a bun the size of a Pillsbury Grands Biscuit) 4. Meat portions are small. They pull out a bunch of meat when you order it and make it seem like you're getting a heaping load of brisket, or turkey, or sausage, start chopping or slicing it and then slide half of it back into the container before placing the meat on your plate 5. Cole Slaw was a bit sketchy looking so we all passed 6. Beans had no flavor Paid $21 for 2 orders of fries, a turkey sandwich, a plate of about four slices of brisket, a side of cobbler and 2 drinks for me and my son. Reading that you might think, that's not too high for BBQ, but Because the portion sizes were so small, I can tell you it was. We all left dissatisfied, but accepted it as we were needing to leave and enjoyed what we could. My recommendation is to pass on this spot if you want good bbq. There are at least 5 BBQ joints in Nacogdoches, but Yelp led me to choose Mike's. In a town not yet heavily saturated with Yelp, this may have been a silly way to decide. The Nac locals in my group said it was among their favorites as well, though, so off we went. Very friendly staff and cool decor. My very generously filled brisket and cheese baked potato was only $6.19! With a drink and tax, I paid only $8.60 for my lunch... Which was incredible to me after years of east coast living. Once I dug in though, I was not impressed. Waterly, over-acidic BBQ sauce and mediocre meat. I think everyone sort of felt that way about their meals. I also really wanted some cobbler, but it looked pretty gross and gelatinous, so I skipped. Sorry Mike's, but I'll probably try somewhere else next time I'm in town. read more

So I tried it only because it sounded weird: Beef and Link PoBoy. Very tasty roughly chopped Brisket with chopped Sausage link on French Bread and just enough BBQ sauce to taste but not drown the meat flavors. The mustard heavy potato salad, the pimento-cheese stuffed jalapeño peppers and peach cobbler pretty much rounded off my lunchtime feast. As with all good smoke houses, your clothes will smell of it all day sadly. read more

I was not impressed by this place, their prices I thought we're a little too high for the food that I ate. Food was not that good for the price that I paid. I've only eaten there once, and do not plan to go back. Place was really clean, not sure about family-friendly seem like a bunch of bodybuilders to be working when I went. After reading the reviews while traveling, I had to stop and try Mike's BBQ... Sorry, folks but what a let down. I had beef and sausage plate, while the brisket was tender the sausage was fatty. The sauce was mediocre at best. The beans were not far off from plain old pork n beans. The Staff were friendly and fast so no complaints there. This was my first time eating at Mike's and maybe the cooking was just off on that day. Unfortunately that will probably will be my last time. read more

If you have a tong... I would avoid! I am BBQ fanatic and I grew up in Nac loving this place, thinking it was Gods gift to BBQ like all the locals do. Moved away for 20 years and actually developed taste buds. If you are like me and you enjoy German style BBQ like they serve up in Austin, Lockhart, and at my all time favorite Pecan Lodge in Dallas then run away and fast. I used to eat here a lot when they were out on 59 south years ago, but since they moved to the present location, I have only been about 5 or 6 times (mostly because I am passing through and the new place is not convenient). Anyway, I liked their Cajun Rice and Carolina style barbeque in the past, so I stopped by this week. I went to the drive through this time and was really disappointed how they have gone down. What a change: the sliced beef sandwich is now a mini sandwich. I swear the bun is 3 inches in diameter - with just enough meat for four bites and you are done. The rice, while still good, was served in a pickle cup, just enough to pop in your mouth for one good bite. I had to wait on the fries (at lunch time) and to say they were crispy is an understatement. It had so much paprika on it, it could have been cardboard for all I know. This used to be my favorite place in Nacogdoches - not anymore. Too little portions for too much money. Not again - Avoid. read more

I was here yesterday. The meats and catfish are basically good but high priced for what you get. Catfish is $1.50 each for pieces slightly bigger than a chicken nugget and like another reviewer noted, there is no more meat on the four meat plate than the two meat plate. The employees are nice enough but friendlier with each other than with the customers. They ask you if you'd like sauce, do you want bread, etc. but then those items don't make it into the bag. Not a higher star rating because everything is served on disposable paper plates, cups, forks, etc. Not a fan of filling the landfill with unnecessary junk. In road tripping multiple times across the country, I've tried to find Texas bbq in a couple of Texas cities. I've used local recommendations as well as yelp, and never found anything that blew my socks off. This place came recommended by my hotel. Well this place came close, but didn't quite beat my favorite bbq place in the country. Had the beef brisket with beans and potato salad. The brisket was super tender with good flavor. It's the best brisket I've had in Texas to date. And the sides were TASTY. I'm not a huge beans fan, but these were really yummy with some nice chunks of meat amidst the beans. The potato salad was sort of like...mashed potato salad to me (a west coaster), but it was yummy. I also had the spiciest stuffed jalapeno I've ever had, from this place. I don't know if it was a fluke or not, but it was good. If you're visiting the university and from out of state, I'd recommend checking this place out. And don't forget the sweet tea. read more

I was excited to go after reading the reviews but it didn't work out. I eat BBQ at least once a week and travel throughout Texas and Oklahoma. I had to go with the house specialty Beef and Link Po-Boy. Great idea but the meat was average and it was over sauced(Also had the typical Po-Boy bun not french bread as in a previous review).
