I'm not sure where all the negative customer service reviews are coming from... I stopped by on Wednesday night for the free bike maintenance clinic they offer, and it was GREAT. Taylor helped me load my bike onto one of the mechanics racks, and showed me how to replace all of my cables and housing and fix my extender on my handle bars. He was there when I had a question, as were several other mechanics. They were all as helpful as I would have hoped and very knowledgeable. I completed my repair in an hour and only had to pay for the supplies I used. And all this help for someone who did not even purchase a bike from them. Not sure when I'm getting a new bike, but I'll definitely look there first. read more

I've had some good experiences here but the last one was awful. I came in with a broken gear shifter and they said they'd order another one and call me in a couple days. A couple days passed and nothing. I came in a week later and asked about the part and I was told they had no record of it or me. The mechanic told me he was ordering another one and said it should only take a couple days. A week later I came in to buy an inner tube and asked the woman behind the counter about the part. She asked if I had recieved a call saying the gear shifter had arrived. I said no, and she replied "then we don't have it" when I asked her to check she reluctantly did and said it was on it's way and would be there in a few days. Another week later I come back and ask and they say it arrived and I should have gotten a call. I tell them know. Turns out they had a totally wrong number down. When I complained to the guy at the front desk he told me to write a bad yelp review as it was the only way the managers would take action to correct what are clearly customer service and systems problems. read more

I came here looking for a bike to start racing Centuries and Triathlons with. Seeing a pretty sign outside University Ave (and craving Brazil Cafe) I decided to come here to get some help. Now, besides riding one, I know NOTHING about bikes. Ian from Mike's Bikes was more than helpful in explaining to me the different frames and components. Even when I told him straight up that I couldn't afford one of those right now, he said "no worries, we're here because we love bikes, not because we're salespeople." The store looks clean and well maintained. They have a variety of bikes with both aluminum and carbon fiber frames. After talking to Ian for 30 minutes, I'm guessing that the bike shop only carries high quality bikes. The entry level Cannondales and Specialized he showed me started at $2800. They also do repairs and tune-ups and if you get a bike here, you can get a lifetime service plan as well. I think it's a good place to look if you're starting to get into biking --- or want to justify free parking for Brazil Cafe ;) read more

Whenever I've gone to Mikes Bikes I've gotten amazing customer service. The staff are really knowledgeable and helpful - the bike lock I got there 6 months ago broke and the really nice guy at the counter offered a refund if I brought it in even without a receipt, but i stupidly threw it out, yet he gave me a discount on a new lock anyway. Very surprised the amount of low ratings this place gets, but I guess it has to be the luck of the draw! I went to Mike's Bikes almost 6 months ago looking to order a Cannondale Road Bike. None of the other shops had it because it was more or less a special order item because of the price range and components. Anyway, I had some horrible experience with two places at Walnut Creek and decided to come here since MB was an authorized Cannondale Dealer. I was lucky to get a guy named Ryan . He sized me up on a few of their Specialized bikes at the store. He was upfront with me and told me it was going to take awhile for my order. It took almost 3-4 months for the bike to arrive, but it was the bike I wanted. He had excellent follow up and was always courteous when I had questions. He had terrific knowledge and was very approachable. Overall a great experience. I never did get my free fitting because it's a pain to get there from Walnut Creek! read more

When you get bike repair services here, make sure they did what you paid them to do. We took my wife's mountain bike here to get the fork serviced and tuned. She is prepping for a big MTB event and wanted her fork checked, but I didn't have time to overhaul her fork. I worked in a bike shop for years when I was in college and I have a full shop setup in our garage. Mike's charges $75 to service a fork and a tuneup is an additional $120. A tuneup for $120 is a bit expensive for what gets done, but that is not the issue here. These are standard prices. The issue we had was that we were charged for a the tuneup that was definitely NOT done. Unfortunately, I discovered this well after the fact as we were getting ready for a ride. Granted, the bike probably didn't need much of a tuneup, but it is still obvious that nothing was done to the bike. The biggest giveaway was that the chain was dirty and had not been lubed. (If you pay 120 for a tuneup, at the very least you should expect the mechanic to lube the chain and run a rag over it.) There were a lot of other signs such as the bike wasn't wiped down and bolts were not checked for tightness, but I won't bore you with the minute details. Suffice it to say that it should have been very obvious to whomever checked out the bike that nothing was done. My wife who picked up the bike, did have remind the mechanic to add air to the shock. Beyond that, she did not know what to look for on the tuneup side. Over the years, I have bought a few bikes from Mike's both for my kids and for myself. I have purchased from the Berkeley store as well as the one in San Francisco. Their prices are are in line with other shops and periodically they have good deals. The purchase experience has always been fine, but the bikes were poorly assembled. I bought a high end cyclocross bike and one of the the disk rotors came loose on the second ride. On my kids MTB bike, I had to tighten a lot of bolts that were really loose before he rode it. It is pretty clear the mechanics here are just slapping things together. I guess that should be expected. This is a big box chain. Bike repair is not a complicated thing. My recommendation, if you need your bike serviced and go here, double check to make sure the work was done. Lesson learned for me is do it myself next time. read more

Okay, yeah, they're an icky chain store. And I've only been here for the repair shop, but my experience was great. I didn't have to wait, and they fixed my tire in about 5 minutes. Very quick, especially since I was a walk-in. Everyone was really friendly, and the guys in the repair shop didn't treat me like an idiot (even though clearly I had no idea what I was doing). The prices were also reasonable and I didn't feel like I'd been gouged walking out. read more

Mike's Bikes is awesome, plain and simple. Every time I go there I am greeted by friendly employees who actually know what they're talking about. They are very helpful and attentive to your needs and always have a good attitude (at least from what I've experienced). Two examples of their awesomeness: 1. I went in the shop looking to buy a stem cap, since mine was cheap and broke, and they gave me one for free! 2. I was biking with some friends and my lockring and cog came loose ( from excessive skid stopping) and the employees there allowed me to use their tools and bike clamp to fix the problem for free. It was totally cool of them to do so since most places will charge you a ridiculous price to do a minor fix like that. I've had similar awesome experiences at their SF location on Howard street too. I will admit that their prices may be a little steep, but you definitely get what you pay for in terms of quality. A+ read more

Just had a great experience here and when I asked if I could tip them, they said write a review, so here it is! Aside from the smiley good looking staff, I had the best customer service experience ever. I came in with my Katana all out of whack, derailer off, wheels loose, bike lock clip broken, back tire semi-flat... you'd think they'd be tired of customers like me. Ian took it all in and passed me to Sailor. They both rule and since most everything I needed was service not parts, they did it in 5 minutes at no charge. Front desk people were sweet and overall I don't see any reason to go anywhere else. read more

I bought my first road bike here more than 10 years ago, and I have been impressed with the service ever since. I recently went in to check on a new stem and my fit and the store staff was incredibly helpful. They checked me on the bike (without requiring a full fit session), made recommendations, and helped educate me both on new bikes, tire pressure, and gloves. They go above and beyond and the customer comes first. Most stores it feels that they are looking for costs in every area (from consults to parts to installation). Mikes bikes feels different in a good way, and I will be going back in a few days to check in different stems! read more

I just purchased a Crimson Specialized Expert from Mike's in Berkeley, and Justin King did a terrific job making it happen. The bike is quite unique in color and performance and I had been looking for a source of the bike for several months. When one became available at Mike's San Jose store, Justin identified the source and went out of his way to secure the bike for me and get it specially delivered. The bike is pretty sweet as you can see, and Justin's commitment to top customer service and effort was great. These are the qualities that bring customers back. OK, i'm new to Yelp, and i've only just began to write reviews. However, I shop a lot, I buy a lot, and i use a lot of services. Mike's Bikes is the bomb! I love this place. All the staff is friendly, and knowledgeable and ready to help. I recently bought a new bike, somewhere else, but they were completely supportive in helping me "trick" it out. Rack, lock, lights, everything. When i couldn't get some things to work, they were great when i went in for help. They put everthing on for me! Taylor J. is the best one of all. He's like the "McGyver" of bike repair. He retrofitted my classic "bike bell" and made it fit. This guy is so smart and cool. My bike had been sitting in the shed at my parent's house for at least 4 years. Rats had eaten off the handle bar grips! I don't know anything about bikes or cycling, I just knew I didn't want to spend a fortune on a new bike so that I could feel the wind in my hair and the sun on my face every couple of days. Maybe it was a little expensive but I have a feeling that's just how much these things cost. Everyone at Mike's was really nice, not a shred of attitude and they helped me get my off brand bike back into decent shape. They explained the options and there was no sales pressure from the repairs to my new helmet and lock. I hate to mention this but I must...those dudes working there are pretty cute. I've been coming to Mike's since I moved to Berkeley a year ago and their repair shop is phenomenal. At first, I tried another Berkeley bike shop and wasn't happy with the service. I've found Mike's to consistently offer super high quality customer service and great repairs. They're always patient, friendly, and helpful. Yesterday was the kicker: my front derailleur cable snapped biking in SF at lunch. I called Mike's to let them know that I'd arrive at the Berkeley store a few minutes before their 8pm closing time. I entered the near-empty store and they stayed a few minutes late to fix my bike. Working over-time and performing happily? I definitely don't take that for granted in a bike shop. I have to agree with many reviews that the customer service at Mike's Bikes in Berkeley borders on useless to moronic. My wife called and asked them if they had a certain bike in stock, a Specialized Turbo Levo Comp. They told her that they had one and would hold it for her. We went down to pick it up and noticed that they were selling us a Turbo Levo SL Comp. I asked if there was any difference between the Levo Comp and the SL Comp and the sale rep said that the only difference was that the SL was lighter. Great I thought my wife will have a lighter bike. But when she rode the bike, there wasn't any power. I thought that the motor was broken. We came home and I looked up the specs and the SL Comp has a smaller motor and one-third the power of the Levo Comp. The sales rep either lied to us or more likely was just an idiot. I took the bike back to Mike's and they charged me 15% restocking fee after I told them that they should bear some responsibility for misrepresenting the specs of the bike. I would not have purchased the bike in the first place if I knew that it didn't have the power of a Levo Comp. I would avoid this store unless you enjoy working with incompetent people. read more

I've asked about in-depth details and they provide a rationale, satisfying answer.Staff does not attempt to oversell their products but rather passionately provided an objective overview. On busy days, they can become unorganized in that the staff-to-customer ratio becomes quite low as each representative becomes inundated with questions from different customers, so the reps end up trying to help too many people at once. They are a fantastic resource of knowledge and I would recommend anyone interested in cycling to consult their expertise. read more

For the longest time I wasn't crazy about this place. Largely because I don't care for Specialized and it basically felt like an outlet store. I'm glad I never gave up though as the last few times I've been in I've been pleasantly surprised by the improvements they've made. Despite being a semi commission based salary, the sales people are a lot less pushy than I remember and listen to what you want pretty well. The variety on what they carry has also come a long way. Between those factors and the high level of service, I'm a big fan of the shop now. It is worth noting, like any place, having an idea of what you want going in helps out a lot. I think a good amount of the negative reviews are those same bad customers you see in any business. The easier you make things for them, the better experience everyone will have. read more

Mike's has been my go-to LBS for 15+ years. In that time, the service department has always been top-notch, proactive, and communicative. That is, until recently -- the proverbial wheels seem to have come off the place. A recent $$$ bit of service was a tragicomedy of poor communication (telling me on three separate occasions that the bike was ready, when it was not), disorganization (multiple missed "will be done by" dates, bike sitting for multiple days with no work being done on it, despite all parts being on hand), and mediocre work/attention to detail (completed bike shifted poorly, brake reach not adjusted to match existing reach, saddle height changed despite it being marked with tape, which was needlessly removed). I'll be getting my service done elsewhere next time. read more

Get your tune-up elsewhere! I went in and had it done but I kept getting chain drops throughout the ride. Took it back in to have them redo it, and the problem persisted even after they advised me that "all was good". I bought the bike from them and purchased the 5iyear plan. Every time I took the bike in, I was neve pleased with the way it shifted; I had bikes that never had a tune-up that shifted better. Needless to say, I took my business to another shop and I am more than pleased. Shifting is spontaneous, and best of all, NO chain drops. On a side not... the customer service of the shop has declined over the years since I purchase my bike. The original crew would bend over backwards to help you out. Not so much now... read more

Although I did not end up buying my current bicycle here, I was impressed with the service and range of products in stock. I was helped by Aaron Glick who was patient and helpful. I tried out 4 bikes the day I went and each time he made sure the bike was set up properly for me and never made me feel rushed to make a decision, which I appreciated because other bike stores have tried to make me feel bad if I didn't purchase after trying out a bike. If this store had been able to get the bicycle I finally decided to buy, I would have purchased it from them. Unfortunately, the bike I wanted was an uncommon size and the manufacturer had discontinued the model 2 years prior. The location is convenient off the freeway but I don't look forward to looking for parking in the area. The UC Berkeley campus is closeby and it's fun and relatively safe to do the test rides there. read more

My BMC Granfondo had a major issue under warranty with the back break mounting detaching from the frame. I had bought the bike from the previous BMC dealer for Berkeley but Mike's Bikes was amazing in helping me out. It was during Covid and BMC was pretty awful frankly to deal with but Sam and the team at Mike's Bikes patiently dealt with BMC. I ultimately ended up with nearly a new bike due to the new frame not working with most of my original bike. Sam and the team was there all along communicating with me and updating me. They are a great bike shop and can help you with your child's first bike to your top end road bike, they can help you. read more

Always helpful and usually have what I'm looking for. I bought a nice cruiser bike from them and was treated very well before and after the sale as they offered free tune ups for the first 6 months. Very nice people here. I walked in with my rear wheel hoping they could help me diagnose a problem. The helpful person at the counter directed me to the back where another person tested if the wheel was true, which it wasn't. He told me there would be a small service charge to true the wheel but I told him I wanted to try and fix it myself. I walked in with what i thought was a pretty nice Cannondale road bike, though it was old, but free, from a friend and needed to get equipped for using it as my daily transportation. I'd ridden a bike in sparingly since I was a kid, and I needed to know what I needed to make the bike safe and rideable. Well, Dakota totally fixed me up with everything, even installing some of the things, showing me how to lock up the bike (I know, really easy stuff, but I had no idea). She spent a good 45 minutes to an hour with me working on my bike, giving me tips, answering all my questions and informed me of a free class they have on Wednesdays to show you how to take care of it. Amazing. And when I got home, I told my buddy, who has a bike, this story, and he told me that he's always gone there and that they're the best. Thank you! read more

They really do have the lowest prices in California -- which, by the way, is not saying much other than they are better than most in the region... Prices in California are ridiculous and then you have the sales tax of almost 10% (most states no longer have a sales tax or aren't higher than 4%). Anyway, if you like laid back, no pressure, salesmen who actually know what they are talking about, and where you can ask for a discount without being embarassed AND would love to get a couple of freebies, then ask for Valentino. Don't expect great service. You have to seek it or else the sales folks will be trapped talking to either (a) that soccer mom whose explaining how she just knows her 8 year old is ready to be the next TJ Lavin; (b) that bike guy whose got head-to-toe professional spandex bike gear he bought off eBay; or (c) that yuppie who wants a better price than free on a water bottle. The sales force deals with a LOT of crazies; help them out and get them out of those conversations with the wing nuts that float in. read more

Needed an inexpensive repair done on my shitty bike; they did it on the spot with nary a skeptical look and gave me some advice about reselling my bike. Friendlier & less intimidating than Missing Link, and prices were comparable. I walked in late for an appointment and Nick took care of every question I had about my mountain bike. He immediately knew how to fix my dropper post by glancing at it. He also gave good advice on the state of my bike. He diagnosed everything without a doubt in seconds. Magic! My rear brake pads were worn and he found the rights pads to replace them immediately. You'd think this place seems like a snobbish, elitist bike shop. It really isn't. Sure, they carry Focus, Willier, higher-end Cannondale models and the Specialized S-Works lineup. They also have Capoforma cycling gear as well. But the staff here has been pretty helpful, I bought a set of bike lights here and I've been pretty happy with my purchase and the service I received here. The entire Mike's Bikes chain has been in existence in the Bay Area for quite a while, I have fond memories of going to their Sausalito location when I was a wee bike riding doofus on a ratty Diamond Back. Besides the fact their sales staff is friendly and willing to answer your questions, they do throw out a few Easter eggs for Yelpers - just check your Yelp app on your iPhone or Android device.
