Yeah, it's just a diner, and the food is simply diner food, but there's something very non-generic about Mike's. I've been coming here for about 8 years now, and I can tell you that NOTHING is more of an embodiment of this neighborhood. It IS Clinton Hill. It's all middle class Pratt-heads, mixed in with folks from the black church on the corner in their Sunday best, mixed in with Gen X Fort Greene super parents and their spawn, mixed in with the Bed-Stuy fabulous (that's how I like to think of myself). It's the melting pot... of coffee. Coming here has the same feeling as sitting at your mama's table. Yeah, she'll make you the same bacon and eggs as everyone else, but there's just something different about hers. Maybe it's love. Maybe it's because she doesn't wash her hands before cooking. Four stars are more for the vibe than the food. This is tight, intimate, clean, well lit diner with a friendly, recurring business, neighborhood endorsed feel. I arrived at 9am to avoid the brunch crowd and ate at the counter. The menu is sparse - eggs, pancakes, and waffles - undistracted by omelettes, oatmeal, fruit, blah, blah, blah. However, I requested a single pancake as a side dish and they didn't blink (sounds simple but diners almost never honor this request). The scrambled eggs were moist but not runny, the toast was home made (or appeared to be), the potatoes fresh, and the pancake fluffy (not the normal rubbery diner fare). The staff was busy but very nice, attentive without rushing. This has everything I want in a diner experience. For two eggs with sides of toast, potatoes, sausage and a pancake plus a cup of coffee I paid $8.16 before tip. What's not to like! read more

Not impressed. Ordered the chicken and waffles, which came out very quickly. Chicken was crispy on the outside, and ice cold on the inside. Almost as if it was partially cooked, refrigerated, and they fry it again right before they bring it to you. The waffles were good though. Not wanting to eat raw/chilled chicken, I changed my order to the pancakes w/eggs and bacon. The bacon was a little undercooked, and the pancakes were gummy. I don't know what they were trying to pass as syrup, but it was not it. I know maple syrup is at a premium at most places, but this wasn't even the fake Aunt Jemima stuff. This was unbelievably thick, and had no sweetness or flavor. I will not be back. read more

$5 for a full breakfast of eggs, whole wheat toast, potatoes (done perfectly), juice (no additional charge for pineapple!) and coffee! I think that's pretty unbelievable. Everything was delicious and done just like I like it. And it's clean, bright and busy in there - a sure sign that it's a great place to eat. This is definitely my new go-to for mornings. Ok, this is what it's all about. This is Brooklyn. This is a diner. Man, I'm so glad my friend brought me here. Really simple menu--no omelettes, no chocolate chip pancakes--just eggs, steak, grits, pancakes, home fries, etc. But delicious, inexpensive, diverse crowd from the neighborhood. I live around the corner and I haven't gone in there for a least 20 years... OK so I decided to try them again for breakfast. The omelet was cold, and I asked for Swiss not American, the toast was cold and I asked for whole wheat not white. The home-fries were under-cooked and greasy... sometimes you just gotta remember why your ex IS your ex. Good golly Miss Molly! This is what a NYC diner/coffee shop should be about. No frills and super fast service. Where else can you sit at an old school counter and order a $5 breakfast consisting of coffee, eggs, toast, and hash browns. You read that right folks, $5 - CASH MONEY! The other thing is that approximately 3 minutes after you've order the food is directly in front of you. No joke, this might be the fastest service in all of Brooklyn. Mike's Coffee Shop is the best place to eat in the whole wide world! Their burgers are excellent, their fries perfectly crispy. Really great homemade chicken noodle soup, and fresh squeezed lemonade. And the owners are warm and friendly, and always know your name. read more

I hope this place stays open forever. The pancakes here are, bar none, the best in New York City. Served in a stack of three, the pancakes are fluffy but not spongy. A slab of whipped butter smacked onto the side of the plate makes for an absolutely perfect accompaniment. The coffee is good too, standard diner coffee. Black, hot, strong. read more

We went to Mike's for breakfast and put in our names and were told a ten minute wait for a table. After waiting over 20 minutes and seeing people who came after us get tables we asked about the wait. The hostess had never written our name down. Instead of apologizing and putting our name at the top of the list, she refused to acknowledge her mistake and said we had never even talked to her. She would only put our name at the bottom to wait again so we left. Very disrespectful service. read more
