Yes it's Bad to The Bone, Ham Bone for my doggies. So Ms Linda moved next door to Mike's a couple days each week, many customers will follow her. New owners didn't change a thing, unlike many restaurants sold. Yes still Famous Dearborn Brand Ham sliced directly off the bone. Got one Mega Ham sandwich on Onion Roll, absolutely marvelous . We shared two Soups Ham n Bean and Split Pea w Ham, truly a Classic Detroit diner for many decades. Fun friendly owners working as a great team. Nice to see Linda she rock's Thanks . #mikesfamoushamplace @mikesfamousham #ham #dearbornbrand #hambone #hambeansoup #splitpeasoup #gotham #downriverfriendseat

Mike's Famous Ham is a classic, old school, perfectly prepared delight. Try it, you'll love it. John, the new owner, will offer a smile as he hand carves generous portions of ham with every serving. Whether it's piled high in an onion or Kaiser roll or served alongside perfectly prepared eggs. The ham was amazing, as well as the pea soup made from their ham bones. This restaurant just has a great feel about it. It's super clean and orderly, and looks exactly like it did when they opened more than 50 years ago. An old school Detroit classic.

It doesn't get better than this!

First time visit today had the regular ham sandwich and a bowl of bean soup. The soup was outstanding, homemade just like grandma used to make, very flavorful. The best ham sandwich around I had mine on a very fresh onion roll. Friendly service in an old fashion diner atmosphere. Truly one of Detroit's hidden gems.

I stopped in today and bought a couple of sandwich's. Not much to choose from the menu is simple and straight to the point. So if you want HAM with eggs, HAM on a sandwich , some soup then you're good. If not keep pushing this ain't for you. The service was perfect, the interior is exactly like you think it would be......no frills no thrills......get your food have friendly convo or kick rocks! Your choice. This is a simpler times restaurant ......something form the past. Food was awesome.....PERIOD!

Fabulous!!!! Love it here. The pea soup and sandwich are my favorite. Please go here before Mike retires and shut it down

Mikes famous him place! It's been there over 50 years

Amazing place! Small menu that allows all focus to be on that HAM! Very clean and very friendly place with an old-fashioned counter to sit at or get your food to go. They don't skimp on the ham and the rolls are fresh. The split pea soup and bean soup (both made with ham bones and ham) are made fresh daily. This place has been there over 50 years and should be for another 50. Plenty of parking available. This little place is exactly what you want in Detroit for a quick and yummy meal. I highly recommend checking it out.

Truly a gem in Detroit. Simple menu... ham sandwiches and soup. That's it. The ham was hot off the bone. Bread was fresh. Bean soup was hearty and delicious. My wife wanted mayo on her sandwich. Nope, mustard only. (Reminded me of the old Saturday Night Live cheeburger skit, if you're of a certain age.) Anyway, nice people. Good food.

A friend of mine said this was a "must have" in Detroit. It is very rare that you find a place that serves non-deli style ham, let alone a place that cuts it fresh right in front of you. I came in at the end of January, during a transition period, to where the original owners sold the business. The new owner was actually in there cutting the ham. The place is small with about a dozen counter seats and some other side table seats. The menu is limited. And, at this time, it is cash only. The new owner said they will be adding electronic payments soon. I ordered the ham and eggs. Don't get me wrong, the food was fine. But, for me, it is actually and overload of ham. And im not really a fan of thick pieces of ham. I didn't mind it in this setting, with the eggs. But, I don't think I would have liked it that thick in their famous sandwich. That's just me, though. The soup seemed to be very popular as some customers just came in and got quarts of soup. Like, I said, the food was fine. So don't let the 3-stars I gave it think I thought it was bad. It was just ok, for me. I probably wouldn't rush back.

Old style diner, with counter seating. Now, I have driven along Michigan Avenue for decades, yet I have never been here before today. At the recommendation of a friend, I stopped for lunch. A side note - they accept cash for payment. No plastic. If you don't have time to dine inside, they also do a brisk carry-out. Two sizes of ham sandwich, small and large. Well, well, let's see how large it really is! That and a bowl of split pea soup. Do I want cheese on my sandwich? Yes please! The diner was filled to capacity, as currently set by the governor. There were clear plexiglass type shields set up to separate the dining and food preparation areas. Everyone wore masks, except for the diners that were eating. Shortly after I ordered my meal, it was set in front of me as I sat along the window counter. The pea soup came with crackers, but once I dug in, I forgot about the crackers. Let me tell ya'll, I finished that soup in no time! Nice and thick, with ample ham bits, it was some of the best split pea soup I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Seriously, if the ham-n-bean soup is anything like the split pea soup, they have a hidden gem right there. Okay, so on to the ham sandwich. 10 bucks. Yep, 10 bucks. And I'll happily order it again. With plenty of pickle slices on the side, and a bottle of mustard to adjust the sandwich to your liking, I mean-to-tell-ya! The fresh sandwich bun was topped with little poppy seeds and did its job well trying to hold all of that ham in place. Nothing got soggy, it was pretty much a perfect size and thickness. Oh, and the ham!! I counted 6 layers of fresh, moist ham stacked one on top of the other. Now, boys and girls, these slices were hand carved. None of that machine processed and prepackaged stuff that you typically find at chain sandwich shops, all weighed out and prim and proper. No, if you order a ham sandwich here, they just start carving away on the ham till they get 'just enough'. Plus that one extra slice that they throw on top just for good measure (check out my pictures). Now, how fresh is that ham, you may ask. Well, let me tell ya! That ham is so fresh, they have a hog chained to a pole out back with half his @$$ missing! Yessiree, it's that fresh! If you are ever in the area of Michigan Avenue and I-96, just west of downtown Detroit, check them out. You will most certainly enjoy your meal. I highly recommend!

    Delicious!

The menu is small but the owners have perfected it! A must eat Detroit restaurant. Come here, you'll be happy you did.

Tourist review: This was our first meal and favorite by the end of the trip. The prices were not only reasonable but the sandwiches were stacked! And not only portions generous, the ham is so tender and juicy. I genuinely envy the locals who get to buy a whole ham from this place for events/holidays. The owners were very nice, made small talk, and gave us a free bowls of pea and bean soups. Both were thick, flavorful, and had chunks of ham. The sandwich bread was not dry. If I ever come back to Detroit, this is #1 on my list.

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing.
