This place was my go to place for lunch when I worked around the corner over 40+ years ago. Lots of things have happened since I last visited, including ownership, but the quality and quantity of food hasn't changed a bit. I talked to John Lambert, one of the new owners, and he said the original owner, Yvet Muftari had stayed on for 3 months after the sale of the restaurant to share the recipes and train the staff to insure continuity of food and service. Today was the first breakfast I had from Mike's. I ordered a half order of eggs, ham, and toast. It was huge. I asked John what is the difference between a half and whole order, and he said the ham circles the entire plate. OMG! Check out the pic. I got lucky today and got a double yolker. I understand Mike's still makes the mile high ham sandwiches with that extra slab of ham on top. Of course, the bean and split pea soup are incredibly good, too. If you've never eaten at Mike's, you're really missing out. Give it a try and you'll understand why "famous" is in the name. read more

They do one thing and they do it right! HAM We split a hearty large ham sandwich with cheese. Served hot and delicious with pickles on the side. They even have Dukes Mayo to top it off. What a great little place. I happen to stumble across this place on Michigan avenue. Looked it up, it looked promising. The outside looks like a hole in the wall and the inside just looks like an old fashioned diner. It's aged, so don't expect the ritz. The food in this place is top notch! I had the regular ham sandwich, and I am dying to see what the large ham sandwich is? The bean soup was delicious, the waitress who has been in that area for over 38 years was just chatty and friendly. The steady flow customers tells me that this place is still the place to go for just a good ham sandwich and a good bowl of soup. I've wanted to go to this place since before the original owner. I had heard that everything was the same. My wife and I had lunch here. I ordered eggs and ham with my wife ordering a ham sandwich. We wanted to try a bit of both figuring on sharing both meals. The ham and eggs arrived. WOW! There were some eggs in the center of the plate with slices of ham all around the outside of the plate. There was plenty of food for both of us and we didn't even touch the ham sandwich. We took the sandwich home. Place was as expected, nothing fancy but everything was clean and orderly. Owner and waitress were extremely friendly. It would take a long narration to explain all we talked about but let's just say that we were welcomed openly and warmly. The waitress says that she is one of the originals having worked there for 36 years at this point. There is no doubt that the place is the same. If your looking for fine dining go elsewhere but if you want good food in large portions for a fair price where the atmosphere feels like your own home give this place a try. I firmly believe you will be as pleasantly surprised as we were. Plenty of parking, easy access to expressways, clean friendly atmosphere, large portions of good food at reasonably priced. First time visit today had the regular ham sandwich and a bowl of bean soup. The soup was outstanding, homemade just like grandma used to make, very flavorful. This place makes the most amazing ham. I was fortunate enough to make a pitstop omw to the airport and grab one of their wonderful sandwiches. The interior of the place is just what you would hope to see when you go inside. Clean, with stools at a bar in front of grill and hospitality second to none. Old style diner, with counter seating. Now, I have driven along Michigan Avenue for decades, yet I have never been here before today. At the recommendation of a friend, I stopped for lunch. A side note - they accept cash for payment. No plastic. If you don't have time to dine inside, they also do a brisk carry-out. Two sizes of ham sandwich, small and large. Well, well, let's see how large it really is! That and a bowl of split pea soup. Do I want cheese on my sandwich? Yes please! The diner was filled to capacity, as currently set by the governor. There were clear plexiglass type shields set up to separate the dining and food preparation areas. Everyone wore masks, except for the diners that were eating. Shortly after I ordered my meal, it was set in front of me as I sat along the window counter. The pea soup came with crackers, but once I dug in, I forgot about the crackers. Let me tell ya'll, I finished that soup in no time! Nice and thick, with ample ham bits, it was some of the best split pea soup I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Seriously, if the ham-n-bean soup is anything like the split pea soup, they have a hidden gem right there. Okay, so on to the ham sandwich. 10 bucks. Yep, 10 bucks. And I'll happily order it again. With plenty of pickle slices on the side, and a bottle of mustard to adjust the sandwich to your liking, I mean-to-tell-ya! The fresh sandwich bun was topped with little poppy seeds and did its job well trying to hold all of that ham in place. Nothing got soggy, it was pretty much a perfect size and thickness. Oh, and the ham!! I counted 6 layers of fresh, moist ham stacked one on top of the other. Now, boys and girls, these slices were hand carved. None of that machine processed and prepackaged stuff that you typically find at chain sandwich shops, all weighed out and prim and proper. No, if you order a ham sandwich here, they just start carving away on the ham till they get 'just enough'. Plus that one extra slice that they throw on top just for good measure (check out my pictures). Now, how fresh is that ham, you may ask. Well, let me tell ya! That ham is so fresh, they have a hog chained to a pole out back with half his @$$ missing! Yessiree, it's that fresh! If you are ever in the area of Michigan Avenue and I-96, just west of downtown Detroit, check them out. You will most certainly enjoy your meal. I highly recommend! read more

A friend of mine said this was a "must have" in Detroit. It is very rare that you find a place that serves non-deli style ham, let alone a place that cuts it fresh right in front of you. I came in at the end of January, during a transition period, to where the original owners sold the business. The new owner was actually in there cutting the ham. The place is small with about a dozen counter seats and some other side table seats. The menu is limited. And, at this time, it is cash only. The new owner said they will be adding electronic payments soon. I ordered the ham and eggs. Don't get me wrong, the food was fine. But, for me, it is actually and overload of ham. And im not really a fan of thick pieces of ham. I didn't mind it in this setting, with the eggs. But, I don't think I would have liked it that thick in their famous sandwich. That's just me, though. The soup seemed to be very popular as some customers just came in and got quarts of soup. Like, I said, the food was fine. So don't let the 3-stars I gave it think I thought it was bad. Tourist review: This was our first meal and favorite by the end of the trip. The prices were not only reasonable but the sandwiches were stacked! And not only portions generous, the ham is so tender and juicy. I genuinely envy the locals who get to buy a whole ham from this place for events/holidays. My wife and I drove down after seeing a local "mini-documentary" about Mike's Famous Ham Place. We we mildly surprised at the simplicity and absolute cleanliness of the restaurant. We ordered two sandwiches, one large with egg and one "small" (no egg) and also a quart of the bean soup after they provided us with a sampling of it, and the Split Pea, to taste. This is THE best ham sandwich I have ever had in my 70 years on this planet! My wife agrees completely. The bean soup, also, was thick and delicious, and they included mini-oyster crackers with it. I have a very big appetite, but had to work at finishing just one-half of mine. Moral of the story: the food was awesome and well-worth the trip down. We will definitely be going back to Mike's Place for another absolutely delicious ham sandwich, no doubt about it, and we'll take home a quart of the Pea soup this time around. Additionally, for what they offer here the prices are pretty reasonable. No real complaint about that. You certainly get your money's worth. read more

But a cities renaissance sometimes clear cuts iconic joints that no longer.....fit. Mikes has been on Michigan Ave for 50 years. Call it Corktown adjacent. Unsurprisingly Mikes Famous sells.....get ready for it, ham. And that's about it. This retro time warp gem is an old school place that does one thing and does it well. Ham and eggs, ham sandwich, split pea soup, with ham nach, and navy bean with ..ham. Think the Saturday Night Live, cheeseburger, cheeseburger sketch with ham. 5 stools, a like amount of chairs facing the window a counter and prep area back, and that's it. A steady stream of take out customers left with Sandwiches and quarts of soup. They must have gotten a tip on a famine. Now the food. Sandwiches are huge, I had a small and it was still huge. Soups were very good, I was able to sample both. Mike himself held court slicing ham like a maistro. And he brought out a fresh ham that they cook on site as I was sitting there. The ham was fresh carved, juicy, served on a fresh kaiser roll with pickles and a slice of cheese. Washed down with a Coke, it was ham-tastic! $16 later I was done and out the door. Not cheap but nothing great is. Oh and that $16, cash on the barrel head only. The register is so old it only rings a max of $5 so the register sings like a slot machine paying off if a large order is rung up, in $5 intervals! Remember no cards, and no ATM so come prepared. Mike's has been on my list for quite awhile. One day I was really hungry for ham so I got in my car and took a drive down Michigan Ave... As others have mentioned, the options are limited. They pride themselves on their ham.... And they should! It's was absolutely delicious! Smoky, but very tasty. I just wanted some ham for sandwiches at home the next day, so I asked for four slices. The owner asked if I wanted them for sandwiches. I said yes and he cut us some nice portions. In addition to the ham I got a large split pea soup. I'm not a split pea soup fan and didn't care for It. My mom wasn't much of a fan either, and she loves split pea soup. I'll pass next time, but look forward to trying the bean soup. It's not fancy, but it's good! I can't wait to visit again! read more

You know when you cook a ham for a holiday and it comes out all dry on the outside and you, the ham lover, are cutting out the good parts from the interior because you know good ham? No? Just me? If you are a true ham lover, you will love Mike's. The ham is unbelievable! It's the best I have ever had. It's moist, flavorful, nearly fatless, and there is no rind at all. Believe me when I tell you: you will never experience better ham. Or service. The sandwiches are huge, so I highly recommend getting a small. The ham sandwich here is the Rickest of Ricks, which means the Bean Soup has got to be the Mortiest of Morty's and it is.....however, the Pea Soup is also the Mortiest of Morty's, but in Pea form. You definitely get your money's worth here pal. You will be filled up. The Soup is the size of the I-94 Tire and the ham sandwich is stacked like a 747, so damn tasty. Imagine every single Easter or Christmas ham you've ever had at your grandma's after church on those holidays when you were a child......now imagine all the smiles, gifts, fun and excitement. I travel to this side of town a few times a year. When I do, it's always a treat to sit at the linoleum counter, have a ham sandwich and a coke and follow it up with a slab of cherry pie. The ham is sliced thick. A small nosh of ham is artfully tooth-picked to the top of the poppy-seeded bun. Be sure to order it with mustard, cheese and pickles! Yesterday, there was a steady flow of people coming in for a brimming bowl (and I mean brimming!) of old-fashioned pea soup, a sannie or one of their huge breakfast plates of ham, toast and eggs. I usually sit at the counter, close to the guy carving the meat and watch him crafting sandwiches. You can appreciate the aged ambiance of Detroit history in this place.
