Sorry I took a bite of my breadstick before taking a pic.

I was in town a couple weeks ago not for vacation but under sad circumstances this time. On my last night in Michigan, instead of cooking because we were tired and burned out after a long day we went with take-out pizza. My cousins boyfriend placed the order and timed everything just right because when he arrived back the pizza was piping hot. Went with a large pepperoni with half mushrooms, half sausage along with breadsticks. I liked how pillowy they were along with the sprinkling of parmesan on them. The pizza had a nice amount of melty cheese on it and the sauce was pretty tasty. The toppings although were simple but the sausage and pepperoni was good in flavor. I love the pizza at Fratelli's when we're in the downtown area, but I let my cousin and boyfriend know that if we're staying in this is the pizza to go with.

While Rockford already has a number of other ice cream/dessert shops I am very glad UCC came to town! The location is small. It's where Electric Hero used to be and they didn't do much to change the layout, other than it looks like there is no longer a rear entrance. That being said, they set up a decent queue system if there is a line, though when we went it was just my family in there (9 of us) and another family of 3 came in after. It is tight with that many people. However, many of the treats are pre-packaged so they cycled people through quickly. I like their concept. They have a huge variety of ice cream sandwiches with fun names and themes. The gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options are limited, but there are a few. They also have ice cream bars, cakesicles, brownie pops, ice cream, sorbet, and Italian water ice. OH, and boba! The different flavors are named after classic video games (Contra, Q*Bert, Crash Bandicoot...) I'm looking forward to going back for some boba! I had the tropical sorbet. It's really refreshing and flavorful. The lil kid size was plenty for me after dinner. I also finished my aunt's peach water ice. It was sweeter than mine, and also refreshing! Both of these were dairy free. With the ice cream competition in Rockford I really hope UCC does well. They have more variety and a wider option of flavor profiles than most. I am looking forward to my next visit already!

I've had most of their kinds of cookies and brownies and everything is a hit and you can tell it's made with love and care. And the prices are reasonable and the booths accept venmo which is cool! Most recently I grabbed a turtle brownie which was rich and decadent but not overly sweet to the point of only being able to eat a bite or two. Great texture. I'm not a huge sweets person, but I like a good soft cookie. No crispy cookies for me - and Daddy's Dough Cookies totally delivered. The cookies we had in the picnic basket were lemon cream pie which consist of two delightfully chewy and soft lemon cookies with lemon buttercream frosting sandwiched inside. The lemon flavor was so bright and summery, and the sweetness level was just right - not too sweet. My boyfriend and I both commented about how good they were, and I immediately looked to see where I could get more. Luckily enough they sell these goodies at Bridge Street Market, Fresh Thyme, and Horrocks here locally. They also sell them online so I bought two of EVERY FLAVOR. Then we happened to find them at one of the last days of the Urban City Cafe and got the birthday cake flavor. Guess what, amazingly good. The cookies are so interesting, they seem like they are an oatmeal type cookie somehow and the texture is just so, so good. I hope they can continue to grow and get into other stores locally. We certainly have been talking them up! If you like a good soft sandwich cookie situation, definitely check out Daddy's Dough. They also have non-sandwich cookie options, cookie making kits, and vegan options online.

They have chocolates, bon bons, gelato, coffee drinks, and more. We ordered two of the cookie sandwiches, which we were told are made daily by a local pastry chef. The blueberry cookie was my favorite - it was soft and full of blueberries. The passionfruit one wasn't as flavorful. The buttercream frosting was super sweet, so we probably could have split one and been happy. I love that they have gelato flights! I didn't see any pricing posted for the treats when we visited, but the total was just over $10 for the two cookie sandwiches. They are handmade (vs. frozen and shipped in) so that makes sense. The employee helping us was super sweet and friendly, which I appreciated. The space is cute with ample seating to enjoy your treats, and they have an Instagrammable photo wall. I don't have a huge sweet tooth, so I don't see myself coming here too often, but it's a nice spot for a date or dessert.

Nate and I stopped by on a Saturday morning to try some of their seasonal drinks and get a light breakfast. The menu includes some hot food items (breakfast sandwich and quiche) and a small selection of pastries. We got a bunch of things to share: banana bread latte, a breakfast sandwich, slice of broccoli ham quiche, and a cherry almond scone. Everything came out on a counter near the ordering area and they called out our name. The drinks were tasty but I preferred the robin's egg cold brew the best. The banana bread latte didn't have a lot of banana flavor; it mostly tasted like the spices you'd associate with banana bread. I really liked the food we tried. The quiche was one of the best I've ever had. I'm actually still thinking about it days later. The texture of the egg was silky and custardy, not at all spongy or dry. I thought it was divine but if you don't like that texture, it is not for you (flan-like). The breakfast sandwich was a bit bland -- I asked for hot sauce but they couldn't find any. I appreciated the texture of the biscuit, and the egg was also tender (not as custardy as the quiche). I don't usually like scones as they tend to be dry, but theirs was flaky, buttery, and delicious, with a very almond-forward flavor. I would definitely order more quiche and scones. There were quite a few people coming in for pickup orders on a sunny Saturday morning. If I lived closer, I think I'd come here often. I'd be curious to try some of their take home items or lunch.

Carrot cake was freshly made and the frosting was amazing!! They had some different options in their take home fridge - some chicken lasagna and curry chicken salad to name a couple. I would definitely love to try that chicken salad one day. This place was the perfect coffee shop/bistro. I wish I lived closer by so that I could try more!
