The Blue Lounge - Happy Birthday, Carlos!

Came here early on a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty, maybe like 10 people inside…read more(which almost doubled by midnight, but not quite). It's pretty much your typical dive bar, with an older crowd, perhaps a majority of regulars coming in and doing their thing on the mic, as they have karaoke on Saturday nights after 9pm. They only have one screen for the lyrics on the "dance floor" near the DJ. So if you're sitting at the bar, you're pretty much uninvolved in that part of the entertainment. In between singers/songs, they did play a lot of old school hip hop (ie. Regulate by Warren G, and I Got 5 on It by Luniz) with music videos playing on the two TV's at the bar. But they did mix it up a bit, playing fun hits such as Tom's Diner. Throughout the night, I was served three different lemon drops by three different bartenders (due to shift changes) who all made it differently, lol. The last guy was frank about not knowing how to make it though, and he had a good sense of humor too, so he made me laugh and I didn't mind the botched beverage. One thing to note, if you check in on Yelp, it says you get a free beer with any shot purchase... but they didn't honor that promo here (or at least that last guy didn't know how). The interior of this lounge is pretty small and includes a piano, booth seating, bar seating, simple blue and red lighting, dart boards, and pretty eccentric posters and decor on the walls, even behind the bar. I like the overall vibe here, it felt really homey, and chill.. great to just sit back and enjoy conversation with good company. I probably wouldn't come here on my own though, due to the variety of characters that come in. Also, if you're looking for a more lively atmosphere, this place is not for you. By the way, street parking was easy to find right out front on a weekend.

Neat little place. Super cheap drinks, great atmosphere, and most importantly: karaoke!…read more No BS, just drink, sing, and have fun! It's a little hole in the wall, but might be your best bet at a good time late at night with some brews, good company, and fun KJs. Checked around other areas but others looked sketchy. Decided to check this spot out and was pleasantly surprised.

The vibes are here but it all stops there…read more.. Let me start by saying that I love this place. Just needs a bit of cleaning up on their transparency. The 'keep it open' policy is something I appreciate but would also appreciate an itemized receipt when you close out. Here's why to keep your eye out when drinking at this establishment. 1- when you close out, it's helpful to verify what you consumed to ensure you're corrected charged. My receipt was the merchant copy and the customer copy. Itemized? Really had to ask for it. 2- the merchant copy - it asked for a tip and the total amount. When we closed out our beer and well drink, it was ~$28. Weird, right? So my thought was that they clearly charged something incorrect. 3- when there's something automatically charged, it had better be communicated to me upfront. The gratuity was automatically added and IT WAS 20%! No sign, no way to notify me that it was already added. It didn't even say so on the merchant or customer copy. On top of that, the copy asked for AN ADDITIONAL TIP. For something like that, I had better get great service. 4- The service here is spotty at best. There's usually one bartender for the often busy bar. Not a problem, usually. But with that high of a price, better serve your customers well and have a fully stocked bar. 5 - the options were lacking. Two things you'd think would be stocked but weren't - espresso (come on, even Kahlua) and apple liqueur for an espresso martini and appletini were too much to ask for, I guess. Overall, a disappointment. Good thing they have the vibes nearly right. But awful business practices.
