It was my first time going to Mikko Sushi, and the experience was amazing. The restaurant was spotless and more affordable than I expected, which made it even better. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout the visit. The food was the highlight--everything tasted fresh and full of flavor. The Toro was buttery and fresh, and both rolls were packed with flavor and beautifully plated. Was driving on a road trip up the 15 and was craving some sushi. Mikko sushi happened to show up on my feed and was on the way. Located on Grand Ave. which is a strip of restaurants and boutique stores. There is a public lot in the back of the building but many signs letting you know which rows not to park in as those will tow your vehicle. We couldn't access the front of the restaurant without walking around the block so we entered through the restaurant's back door. This was at the same time a worker was coming out and I scared the beejeezus out of him. Sorry! He was so kind to explain that our parking spot was in the safe zone and invited us to enter the restaurant. This restaurant is relatively big with lots of booths and tables. Good for groups especially around 4 people. The restaurant is decorated with tile and plants. Def unique in a sushi restaurant. I noticed all the workers were cleaning the entire time I was there. Cleanliness was a priority and pleasant for me to see when I'm eating sushi. We ordered two lunch specials, the 8 piece sashimi that comes with sushi rice and a bowl of miso. And the 5 piece nigiri that comes with a choice of a roll (California, tuna or shrimp for $3 extra). We also ordered salmon Kama. The sushi was fresh, and they were very generous with the portions. I enjoyed the Kama as well. Maybe would've preferred that it was cooked just a little longer to get more of a crispyness on the skin? But that's just me. I am knocking off a star because when we sat down we were only provided with a paper menu to order sushi and apps. We didn't even know there was a larger menu with more food items until we stumbled across it on their website. We would've missed out on the lunch specials otherwise. I and my boyfriend decides to try this place out tonight and it was not disappointed. The beef udon was a little salty but it is very good in general. The Escondido rolls that the owner recommended is 10/10, it is a must try if we ever come back in the future. We just have one hiccup with the servers, they did not even come to check to refill the water, or to take our finished plate out, or provide us a check at our table. We kinda had to go to the front to pay. That's why we were not really happy to be able to give a good tip. I've been coming to Mikko for years, and this Tuesday (today) I came in for another delicious meal. Unfortunately about half way through two girls came in to pick up some food and they started saying hello to all the staff. I didn't see an issue with it but next thing I know an employee started screaming "get out of my kitchen" to one of the girls. The whole experience was off putting and it ruined the meal for me and I ended up leaving shortly after. It was really shocking to see how that employee acted toward I am assuming past employees and it made me pretty uncomfortable. I've lived in escondido for about 2 years now so have had tome to check out what the area has available. Mikko stands out for not just sushi, but for the staff as well. They are usually pretty busy but always get us in and out. The space is pretty large so I've never felt crowded while there. Their prices are pretty standard/midrange for sushi. The sushi itself is always fresh and they have a pretty large menu of other traditional Japanese dishes beyond the sushi. I've loved everything ordered. When I come here by myself, the service is always good; my drink never runs dry, food comes out in good time, etc. I love the deep fried Philly roll and the (no rice) spicy tuna hand roll is the best. The Edamame isn't on the menu slip, but they have it plain or with garlic (very delicious). Here comes the "But....": Both times I've come here with my family we've had semi-bad service. We're not ordering anything special, or making special requests... I think it's just dumb luck. The first time with my family we ordered a roll that came out drenched in sauce. We tried to send it back and we were told, "that's how we (they) make it." We ordered four rolls that night, so no big deal that one wasn't made very well... to be clear, it really looked like a lid fell off the squirt bottle and they tried to clean it up and serve it. Tonight, it was obvious that our server forgot about us. From the people being seated after us getting their food and check, to three orders of hot tea (our drinks) never coming out. A manager noticed us, came by and talked, and got our food taken care of. Our server wasn't seen till it was time for the check... those hot teas ended up on the bill by mistake. The words, "Sorry" never came out of anyone's mouth. Had to knock a star for service. We still love the food and recommend the place. read more

It is so hard to find a great Sushi place and close to home without going all the way to Irvine! Hubs and I don't have to search any further, we found our go to place when we need our sushi fix! Beautiful decor inside, friendly service and the chefs are friendly and welcoming. We like to order the tempura but they have changed the vendor to a less expensive and way less tasty item--- couldn't get past the lack of quality! The service was bad and this was the 3rd time in a row that we took a friend for lunch and their order was messed up. Basically, the order was given to a cook that was "going home" and it was forgotten about in the oven and then burned up. Then there was a problem again but it finally arrived after everyone else had long since finished eating and were ready to leave. Afterwards, in the car, I asked how everyone's meal was and they all said "ugghhh......." in their struggle to say anything good. This was definitely our last time here--- the lack of service and lack of quality has finally pushed us out the door permanently!!!
