Omg these oysters are great and the chef said they are from Catalina Island. The California rolls was tasty and I was able to hold my food down. What a delicious meal and the service is great. The environment seems like they are renovating in the other room but the room we were in nice and chilly since it was a hot day. We will be back since this is our favorite oyster spot. read more

The waitress wasn't attentive. She never checked on us after we received our food until it was time to pay the bill. No refilling drinks, no checking on us. The sushi was good. Expensive but good. My teenager got his food first and was completely finished before they brought my salad. It was ridiculous and the server never came by to let me know that my salad was coming or what the hold up was. We won't be going back. They raised their prices so the Groupon isn't really a deal. read more

I like coming here, the foods good, but I was disappointed to be charged extra for small sides of eel sauce and spicy mayo during a dine-in visit. I wasn't informed there would be an additional charge when I requested them. It's only $2 each, but it feels like nickel-and-diming for basic condiments that are typically standard with sushi, especially when dining in and already tipping on the full meal. If there are additional charges like this, they should be clearly communicated upfront so guests aren't surprised at checkout but even then, charging for basic condiments is ridiculous. read more

Never had an issue with this restaurant until today. I completely understand that it may have been a busy time, but after being seated, no one came to our table for over 10 minutes to take our drink or food order. During that time, we noticed other customers who arrived after us were greeted and had their orders taken almost immediately. We waited a few more minutes in hopes that someone would come by, but unfortunately no one did. We ultimately decided to leave, but before doing so, we made sure to respectfully inform the manager about our experience. It was disappointing, especially since we've always had positive visits here in the past. read more

I was able to dine here as part of the Sushi Smackdown event. We were able to try a variety of menu items: garlic & spicy edamame, gyoza, stuffed jalapeño, albacore roll, Escondido roll, crunch roll, (1 or 2 other rolls i can't remember the name of) and the bananas foster dessert. Every single thing was soooo good. I am not out in Escondido often, but I will be sure to stop by here whenever I am. read more

This place is great! Honestly do not understand their low score and I'm so glad I ignored it in making our choice for dinner. We decided to do a walking sushi crawl and try a couple of places we'd never been. This one is so good! The nicest and most attentive staff, 50% off a lot of different interesting rolls, and a clean, not cluttered atmosphere with a hip and fun vibe. So good! Love you sushi Yama!!!! read more

A friend recommended Sushi Yama to me because I was looking to finding a great sushi spot since I eat sushi at least twice a week. I ordered several different speciality rolls,, their sliced seared pepper crusted Ahi with sliced Avocado , calamari and a few other items. I did as for spicy mayo to be put on side, but the eel sauce was ok, Infact I asked for extra eel sauce on the side. I didn't check order & I should have. When I got home and saw my almost two hundred dollar order I was so disappointed. I guess asking for spicy mayo on the side, but eel sauce on rolls was ok, meant no spicy mayo, no eel sauce, but add eel to everything and charge me extra for that. I am not a huge eel person, it also didn't smell good, so this was very disappointing because it was on all but one roll. The salmon in all rolls had pin bones all through it. I was looking forward to trying the seared sliced ahi with Avocado and it was no where to be found. There was a roll I didn't order that had tuna & Avocado in it, so clearly they gave me that instead of the sliced Ahi & Avocado. I learned sushi is a form of art, they take their time to make them beautiful. That is not what I got. Everything was clearly rushed, thrown together, so the rolls just fell apart. Sushi Yama is hands-down one of the best spots for sushi in Escondido. The food is always fresh, the quality of the fish is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable compared to other sushi places. Their 50% off menu is generous and delicious. You can tell they really care about what they serve. Every roll we've tried has been packed with unique flavors, and the portions are generous too. The only downside is the bathrooms -- they could definitely use some updating and a good deep clean. But honestly, the food more than makes up for it, and I'll keep coming back because the sushi is just that good. But I really really really suggest management address the men's bathroom. I have always liked the food here, but tonight's visit was wonderful. The food came out much faster despite a full dining room, and the rolls were 50% off for dine-in customers, allowing me to try some new things since we wouldn't bust the budget on two rolls! We tried yakitori which was great! Perfectly cooked and moist. I also tried the albacore special and I loved it! The spicy tuna hand roll was good size for the price and well balanced. The Salmon Bento Box was really great. It came with a lot of food, which made it feel like a very satisfying meal. Everything was very tasty, and the salmon was especially good. She has such a warm friendly personality, and it's clear she genuinely enjoys what she does. As for the food, we like to try different rolls each time. Some of our favorites so far are the Escondido roll, Dynamite roll (definitely one of our top picks), Dragon roll, and the asparagus tempura roll. We'll sometimes add a spicy California roll too. On colder days, I love getting their miso soup or spicy tonkatsu ramen, you can even switch out the protein for an extra charge, which is a nice option. My husband usually goes for the chicken katsu curry, and I really enjoy the beef yakisoba or the teriyaki salmon. So if you're in Escondido definitely give them a try!

Unfortunately, when he returned on another occasion, he was outright refused service. The explanation? According to the restaurant, he "eats too much." That is astonishing for a business built around the concept of all you can eat. If serving customers with healthy appetites is a problem, then perhaps they shouldn't advertise themselves as an AYCE restaurant. Needless to say, my family will never return. The food is mediocre, the prices are no better than competing AYCE sushi restaurants, and the way customers are treated is unlike anything I've encountered elsewhere. There are far better options in San Diego County that offer higher-quality sushi and know how to treat paying customers with respect. As a final note, the restaurant itself did not leave a great impression. Our table was sticky, and the men's restroom was poorly maintained, with a toilet continuously running and a broken urinal. Combined with the mediocre food and the unbelievable customer service, this was an experience we won't be repeating.

They have music playing in the background but it's not loud. The dining area is a little small so if you have a large crowd you may want to call ahead. They also have a small outside dining area. The service was good. They forgot our well sauce and we had to request it again. Outside of that, they're eager to answer questions and are very friendly and professional. The food was very good. Only a few things were a miss but that could be preference. The gyoza were fried perfectly and not greasy. I loved the crispness. Sadly, they lacked flavor and tasted bland. The vegetable roll was amazing. It was fresh, had crunch, and bursting with freshness. I preferred the eel deluxe roll over the dragon roll. Even though it's the same texture the flavor was nice. The eel was grilled perfectly. The dragon roll was mid. The cucumber chunks in it were too chunky and it's a bit one noted. The highlight for me was the summer roll. If you're like me and prefer sashimi over sushi with rice, you'll love this roll. It's tuna,salmon, albacore, and crab wrapped in cucumber. It's served with ponzu and spicy mayo but I requested no spicy mayo. This was bright, citrusy, and delicious. The cucumber gives it a nice contrast. If in the area, consider trying this place. It was worth trying. I rated it 4 out of 5 because there were a few flies trying to land on our food, the gyoza dumplings lacked flavor, and the dragon roll was a bit one noted.

It's a notch higher than sushi deli IMO. Their chirashi bowl, for the price was a great deal. The only fish I didn't like was the tuna, it was tasteless, probably previously frozen too. The others weren't bad. We also judge sushi by their California rolls, and they made it right. The best deal is the kids meal. My little boy ate it all! Even the roll. We'll be coming here for our affordable sushi fix. It does the job. Restaurant was extremely warm inside, so was a little worried about the sushi, but everything was fine.
