Omg these oysters are great and the chef said they are from Catalina Island. The California rolls was tasty and I was able to hold my food down. What a delicious meal and the service is great. The environment seems like they are renovating in the other room but the room we were in nice and chilly since it was a hot day. We will be back since this is our favorite oyster spot. read more

I've been to this place a good handful of times over the past few years and I've never had a bad experience. The staff has always been attentive and food comes out pretty quick. I like coming here, the foods good, but I was disappointed to be charged extra for small sides of eel sauce and spicy mayo during a dine-in visit. I wasn't informed there would be an additional charge when I requested them. It's only $2 each, but it feels like nickel-and-diming for basic condiments that are typically standard with sushi, especially when dining in and already tipping on the full meal. If there are additional charges like this, they should be clearly communicated upfront so guests aren't surprised at checkout but even then, charging for basic condiments is ridiculous. read more

I was able to dine here as part of the Sushi Smackdown event. We were able to try a variety of menu items: garlic & spicy edamame, gyoza, stuffed jalapeño, albacore roll, Escondido roll, crunch roll, (1 or 2 other rolls i can't remember the name of) and the bananas foster dessert. We called in for a reservation the same day and spoke with Tala. When we arrived, she greeted us and graciously accommodated our party of 12. The service was exceptional, and she was incredibly attentive to our daughter's shellfish allergies. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was pleasant. This place is great! Honestly do not understand their low score and I'm so glad I ignored it in making our choice for dinner. We decided to do a walking sushi crawl and try a couple of places we'd never been. This one is so good! The Salmon Bento Box was really great. It came with a lot of food, which made it feel like a very satisfying meal. Everything was very tasty, and the salmon was especially good. Sushi Yama is hands-down one of the best spots for sushi in Escondido. The food is always fresh, the quality of the fish is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable compared to other sushi places. Their 50% off menu is generous and delicious. You can tell they really care about what they serve. Every roll we've tried has been packed with unique flavors, and the portions are generous too. The only downside is the bathrooms -- they could definitely use some updating and a good deep clean. But honestly, the food more than makes up for it, and I'll keep coming back because the sushi is just that good. But I really really really suggest management address the men's bathroom. The food came out much faster despite a full dining room, and the rolls were 50% off for dine-in customers, allowing me to try some new things since we wouldn't bust the budget on two rolls! We tried yakitori which was great! Perfectly cooked and moist. I also tried the albacore special and I loved it! The spicy tuna hand roll was good size for the price and well balanced. My husband usually goes for the chicken katsu curry, and I really enjoy the beef yakisoba or the teriyaki salmon. So if you're in Escondido definitely give them a try!

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't ... bad. It just wasn't really all that great either. The sushi rolls are well made and beautiful to look at, however the flavors themselves were either clashing or simply disappointing. We began with a California Roll, basic in taste and usually a good measuring stick of technique of the chefs. Here, it was clean, well rolled, and pretty tasty. It was a nice start. Then we moved onto the Golden Mountain Roll. When it hit the table, it became a testament of the care that the cooks put into making sure that what they serve looks as good as it can. The roll was deep fried, held up well under cutting, and had a meticulous drizzle over the top. I wish I had more pics of it to share. Flavorwise, it was okay. I'm not fond of cream cheese in sushi, but it had nice heat from the jalapeños, and I wish it had a bit more salt to pair along with the sweet of the crab meat and sauces. We then had a Dragon Roll, an incredibly well crafted and plated master creation that made our eyes boggle when the server placed it on the table. It was stuffed with meat, beautifully topped with ribbons of eel, avocado, and sauce, and it had perfectly proportional dragon ears at the head end of the roll. And yet, the roll itself was oddly dry and kind of flavorless. Last we tried the Tangy Mango Roll. Again, visually this was sublime. It was gorgeous and fantastically crafted. On paper, the flavors really sound like they should work. But, the cream and mango are a bit overwhelming in both taste and texture, making the roll itself more of a novelty instead of a delicious treat. In the end, I can't help but think that if we chose different fare off the menu, we probably would have had walked away with a much different opinion of Umai. With so many other sushi spots closer to home, it may be difficult to come out again with the entire family, so I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to update. Because of that, I have to say I'm stuck with a pretty slightly below average view of Umai Sushi.

We some combos, I got a sashimi and nigiri combo, my husband got a nigiri and rainbow row, and California roll on the side. They don't have chirashi bowls, so that was a bummer. The sushi wasn't bad. No fishy taste and pretty fresh. It was a random Wednesday. Definitely pricey for not a lot of food though. Wish they add a chirashi bowl, but wouldn't mind ordering from here again.
