To start off, Instructions to our room were incorrect. It says to park in the back then exit your vehicle to the walkway and go left at the Y, then up a staircase on your right and the Travis door would be the second door on the right and to use the keypad. There is no door on the second floor that says Travis with a keypad. You have to go around to the front of the house and find the door on the FIRST floor that says Travis with the keypad to get in. We were checking in at night and after trying all the stairs at the back of the house where we were told to park and looking at all of the doors, we finally went to the front of the house and found our correct room/door on the first floor. This place is only good if you're a hard sleeper, or if you're here to party and stay up until 2:00 am. Bring ear plugs if you want any sleep before 2:00 am!! The details say quiet time at the house starts at 10:00 pm, but why bother with that "rule" when this house sits across the street from a bar/music venue that stays open until 2:00 am.. You can hear their music blaring and thumping, cars screeching down the side road, people talking on the sidewalks and street, and we even heard a girl throwing up outside at 12:40 am. Also heard an irate man who was kicked out of the bar wandering the street in front of the house screaming profanity and racist comments from 12:30-1:00. It was a great spectacle to watch from our balcony since we couldn't sleep. We heard most of this noise from inside the bedroom while we were trying to sleep, which we did not get to do until after 2:00 as we also heard the bar close and everyone empty out onto the street in front of the house. The battery was missing in the fan/light remote in the bedroom so you couldn't use the fan to help cool the room or to help with white noise. I would've thought this was checked when the room was "cleaned" before our arrival. There was a used k cup still in the coffee maker from whoever stayed last. There also seemed to be a little white mold spot on the wood floor under the AC unit, and tons of stains on the old carpet on the stairs. Also the shower liner was disgusting, the bathroom tiles were dirty, and the toilet brush by the toilet was disgusting. I wish I did more research on the location of this house, but the bar did not show up on the map. While the house was cute on the outside, the "suite" itself definitely didn't feel like a suite, nor did it feel clean, safe, or relaxing. Such a waste of $263 for ONE night. I was hoping paying more for a place for one night, it would be better than some local hotels but boy were we wrong.

This rundown location is extremely noisy and not at all a place of rest. It also lacks even the most basics. It has a kitchen but no wash rag for the sink, nor any ice trays for the freezer. A Kurig, but no coffee pods (not even the cheapest of stuff that roadside motels nowadays offer). No facial tissues to be found anywhere?? Table stakes. Also, must add that this place is potentially quite insecure. There is an external keypad (only) for the entry door, but no way to lock that from within (see photo). Thus, presumably, whomever has stayed previously in your "suite" or who maybe is/has been employed here in some capacity could possibly access your room at any hour of the day or night. And will add - importantly - that the dumpy little bar across the street is open until 2:00a SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. Thump, thump, thump all night long, accompanied by drunken wailing and constant comings and goings of loud trucks with a minimal exhaust system (if any). One will enjoy slamming automobile doors every handful of minutes, especially towards closing time. The music also gets louder and louder as the witching hour approaches - an old bar manager trick to the drinkers a-drinkin.' Oh, patrons park directly in front of McKenzie - literally right outside of your front door if you happen to be in a front unit (woe is you). You are expected to park in the back and walk around if in a front unit. Within the building, there's seemingly zero sound-proofing, either vertically or horizontally. Can clearly make out the words of everyone around you at all hours (made some recordings if ownership/management is ever interested). Which, of course, in turn means that every single thing you say within the confines of your room is up for grabs by all of your neighbors. If you book a ground floor room, every single footstep above will be experienced loudly. As far as aforementioned ownership/management, just know that they will be utterly unsympathetic to any pleas regarding any of this - it's, you know, beyond their control or ability to remedy (even though they haven't warned you about any of this as part of the booking process). This property is a red flag DO NOT STAY under any circumstances - including if the only alternative is to sleep in your vehicle. You were warned.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather not stay in a hotel room all weekend since that doesn't feel better than staying home. That's what led us to The Gathering. We came upon their listing via a post on Instagram about interesting places to stay around Austin, or within a short drive. I fell in love with the decor and the privacy! The Gathering is a collection of cottages or houses that each have their own style and although the houses are close to each other, they share no common walls, and each has a private outdoor area, and hot tub, in addition to delightful homey touches. There is a kitchenette for meals, but no stove or oven, but we found November the perfect time to make sausage dogs over the fire pit. We toasted s'mores and sipped champagne, spent time relaxing in the hot tub, and even rinsed off in the outdoor shower. By the time our stay was up, we were both wishing we had booked more nights! We stayed at the Hideaway house, which is the farthest property from the street and really enjoyed how alone we felt despite the adjacent houses also having guests. We enjoyed a game of basketball on the court across from our cottage and gathered pecans from the huge trees for a mid day snack. Deer were seen scampering across the back meadow and the gentle baas from the sheep nearby added to the bucolic scene. The only negative for me was that I found the mattress to be a bit firm for my tastes, but since that is purely a personal preference, I would not deduct stars for it. We will definitely book another stay, soon! Thanks for the Texas hospitality!

Check in was easy, we had no problems getting in. Property managers are communicative if you need anything but also give you complete privacy if you wish. There is free uncovered parking, park on the quiet street out front and there's a small, short path that leads you to all the different properties. The area is off the main streets of town to afford you comfort and quiet, but also close enough to get to everything easily via a short car or bike ride. I appreciated all the little modern, homey details of this place. A couple things of note: Wifi is very spotty so don't count on that if you need it for anything. It wasn't a big deal to us because we were there to relax and disconnect anyway. Not sure if it had anything to do with the Hideaway being the last property farthest from the entrance. If you want to use the fire pit, bring your own fire wood. Though there is a starter log provided and a gas fireplace available. Lots of shampoo and body wash provided but bring your own conditioner if you wish - only a hotel size tube available in the bathroom. Walgreens and HEB/Walmart are very close by if you need anything! Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.

After walking through a gate and down a short brick pathway, you enter a beautiful brick paved garden area that is framed by crepe myrtles and other plantings. I can imagine how beautiful the property is in full bloom (such as in Spring), as it is still very inviting and attractive in mid-July. To the right is the owner's home, and to the left is the rental. There is a small seating and swing in front of the double doors to the cottage. Upon entering, you look up and you're greeted by a large chandelier and the king bed in front of you and large wooden doors acting as a headboard. I'd love to have known what the doors were once used for! To the right of the doorway is a small kitchen area with a sink and a refrigerator and microwave (which are hidden in cabinets), along with a coffee maker. The fridge is filled with refreshments (waters, milks and juices). The counter has an even nicer surprise . . . a cherry/cream cheese coffee cake!! So good! They also provide some single serving cereals and popcorn. For entertainment there is a tv with cable and a DVD player. The property doesn't have daily housekeeping, but if you're staying for more than two days, they come every other day to be sure you have everything you need for a pleasant stay. With the quiet location and oh so comfortable mattress, I got a wonderful nights rest. This is a truly peaceful location that offers tranquil surroundings and a well appointed cottage.

Not to mention the entire house is so tastefully decorated (without having to worry about the kids having accidents). There was even a small Xmas tree we turned on after the Macy's Day Parade! The house is perfect for families! Spacious enough to where you can all be together but also on your own without being disturbed. As the family chef, the kitchen was my favorite! We hit the wine road towards Fredericksburg and after seven wineries, 42 tastings, and six bottles later, he brought me to the most adorable place I've ever stayed at: Carriage House. In case you're wondering, it was just as adorable the next day when I was more sober (my photos don't do the place justice). The outside of the main house was pretty, but no, we weren't staying in the main house- he did better than that. Off to the side of the main house was a little cottage standing by itself. "EEEEE, we're staying in there?!" my tipsy self gushed. The girly squeals only intensified after I saw the interior of the cottage. Hubs had outdone himself. A few tips for first timers: Dogs under 30lbs are allowed to stay for an extra $10/night. You have your very own private parking spot that is literally right next to the cottage. Once parked, you will find a little gate about a yard in front of your car; the gate leads right to the front of the cottage. In addition to the usuals that are provided at a hotel, the cottage is also supplied with dishes, silverware, and wine openers. Just check the drawers around the kitchen sink. Towels and extra toiletries are located under the bathroom sinks, and there is a step stool located underneath the (very high) bed. If you're short, use it. If you've been drinking wine all day, use it. When in doubt, use it. You're not actually served breakfast in bed here. Instead, you're given $10 vouchers (one for each guest) that can be used at several popular brunch spots in Fredericksburg. If Carriage House had a cheesy slogan, I would imagine it to be something along the lines of, "Carriage House: Drink Wine and Fall in Love." So friends, drink wine, fall in love, and check this place out. But don't try to book on my birthday weekend. Because it'll be mine.
