The mechanics of this place are THE WORST. You stand in line to get a table. Then you have to stand in line to order food (your table wait staff does not enter your order), you have to stand in yet another line to order drinks. Then YOU have to go pick up your food order when it is ready. What's the point in having wait staff and asking for tips when I am doing all the damn work. Extremely Inefficient. This process may have worked 40 years ago but it's super inefficient for today's audience. Shame. Adding to the review that our order was to-go and when we got to our hotel room...NO plastic ware (even though Mac and cheese was part of the order). Who TF can eat brisket Mac and cheese without a fork or spoon. Nothing was added to the bag they gave us. We will never go back. Hope the flavor was at least worth the hassle this time. read more

Update: Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is considered by the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy to be the "best drink in existence". The patio area was kept extremely clean and the fans actually made it bearable to sit outside for lunch at 11am in August (impressive!) They were setting up for live music and the service was fast. This spot came highly recommended from friends of ours on our trip to Fredericksburg! It's super casual, but the food is delicious! Portions are huge and if you're looking for a hefty dinner after wineries all day, this is your spot! The live music is also a nice touch! We were here in July so it was hot out but once the sunset it was pretty nice! We had the chicken fried steak and the fried chicken and both were delicious! Both were fried great and super tender! Did not actually get to try this place so can't give it a true rating but FYI they close the kitchen hours before their closure time and we had a group in town looking for dinner after arriving late and unloading for a wedding in the rain. Called them an hour before closing to see if we could come eat and were told the kitchen closed an hour before so would be good to know this before hand or online when looking up places to try to get some food. read more

Hondo's is super casual, so come as you are. You can tell everyone (including the locals) enjoy this place. Parking was pretty easy on the side street nearest. There's a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. My friends and I went in mid-May, and it was already getting pretty warm. So, we were seated at a table inside. I found it to be pretty warm inside. The doors are kept wide open and I think that might've been the only air circulating. The space gives a nice Texas, country feel with lots of pictures on the wall. There was live music to enjoy, as well. Although you're seated, it's pretty casual in that you go to the bar to order your food and drinks. They'll give you a buzzer and you get your food from a pick up window inside. We really enjoyed our food and drinks. I can't remember the drink I had but it was strong and pineapple. I remember the pineapples being soaked in the alcohol as the selling point for me. We ordered a burger to split, curly fries covered in pulled pork and goodness, and queso with steak. Loved all of these but the queso was really more than I expected and it got cold fast. So eat it fast. All the portions were actually huge. I really liked Hondo's and would go back (earlier or later in the year). read more

Came here during Oktoberfest on a Saturday early afternoon and was seated right away on the open patio area. Live music was nice and the ceiling fans above the outside tables was much appreciated. We stuck w appetizers and margaritas and had a great time overall! Definitely would be back to try more items and the atmosphere. read more

The restaurant requires you to order both your food and drinks at the bar, and once your order is ready, you have to pick it up yourself. There is no table service, which was disappointing. I ordered the stacked enchiladas, and they were terrible. They looked like a frozen TV dinner and honestly tasted even worse. Overall, the food and the dining experience did not meet my expectations, and I would not recommend restaurant. read more

This was a nice, upbeat place that my husband and I visited while on a romantic getaway. It was a bit of a wait to be seated and it would have helped if the host would have explained the process more clearly. You have to wait to be seated, then get in line to order food. This was our first time visiting Hondo's in Fredericksburg, and we had such a great experience! The bartenders were absolutely wonderful, friendly, attentive, and full of great recommendations. They really made our visit enjoyable with their positive attitude and excellent service, so shoutout to them! We were also warmly greeted when we arrived by a young woman with long curly/wavy hair around 9pm on Thursday, and she was so kind and welcoming as well. Please let her know we appreciated her too! The food was delicious. I ordered the Texas Fried Steak, and my husband had the Chicken Fried Chicken. Everything was flavorful and fresh, and we really enjoyed our meal! read more

Really Hondo you can do better.... Much better! Why do you put two surly faced host and hostess's at the entrance of your restaurant? My husband and I came in for a meal and asked to sit outside. The hostess said that there were no tables available outside but we could dine inside. This was a slow Thursday evening and as we looked at the patio we saw at least a half dozen tables available. When I mentioned that we would be happy to share a table with another couple she said, "well you can go ask someone..." Immediate bad vibe from miss chunky monkey! As she rolled her eyes at the host who just shrugged his shoulders and reluctantly walked us to a table that was on the outside part of the patio area. He said nothing to us but turned and walked away. My husband and I moved to another vacant table, so that we could enjoy the live music. We had to figure out how to go to the inside bar, to order our food and then return to pick it up. Another lackadaisical employee took my order, while yawning loudly without covering his mouth, while I had to experience his foul smelling breath. Dirty, dull minded employees, except for the exceptional people that cleared the tables and cooked the food. I would give this place a hard pass... too many other options for dining in this town. read more

Grabbed a quick bite before heading to one of our tastings for the evening. We were seated quickly; this is a self serve restaurant where you order from either two ordering spots and pick up your food when it's ready. I ordered the green chili chicken enchiladas which listed spicy chicken but there was no spice to it. The chicken quesadilla was average and the walking taco was simple and light, if you order the walking taco, would recommend ordering something additional if you are hungry. read more

My friend recommended this place and I am so glad she did!! We went on a Thursday around 5...we were seated outside immediately. About 5 min later there was a long wait! So we just beat the rush!! I ordered the grilled mahi mahi sandwich and added pickles. It was superb. The fish was perfectly cooked, had great flavor and big dense flakes. Yum! The sauce that came with it was a cilantro-lime-jalapeño vinaigrette, with great flavor! My friend had the Reuben which she thought was delicious but needed more of a sauce. Their Reuben doesn't have thousand island dressing like you'd find traditionally, instead it is just a thin layer of brown mustard. She went and asked for more mustard and a side of pickles and was happy with it after that! The star of the show was the double cheese potato fries!! Those were WITHOUT A DOUBT IN MY MIND the best curly fries I've ever had. Even with all of the cheese they retained their crispiness. I'll be dreaming of these until I can go back and get them again! The cashier recommended a half order of the machsticks which was only $4 and more than enough for 2 people to share! As Texans we needed to add a little spice to our meal, and this did the trick! I'm extremely disappointed with the service (or lack thereof) I experienced here. My friend and I spent $37.10 on two margaritas and a quesadilla at this self-help style setup. We stepped away to the restroom for a few minutes before we had even started our meal, leaving our full drinks and food on the table. When we walked back, the hostess actually stopped us to tell us he "didn't think we were coming back" and had already given our table to new people. Our entire $37.10 order--which we hadn't even touched--had been cleared and thrown away on his orders. The resolution was honestly insulting. Instead of offering to remake the items they threw away or providing a refund, they simply offered us a "new table." Why would we want a new table to sit at with no food or drinks? It's one thing for a busser to make a mistake, but for the hostess to admit he gave our table away while our full drinks were still there and then refuse to fix the $37.10 loss is unacceptable. We ended up leaving frustrated and out of pocket. We won't be coming back, and I'd caution others: don't leave your table for even a second, or they'll charge you for the "pleasure" of throwing your lunch in the trash. read more

Super casual place with live music on the patio. I love that it feels like a local spot although it's frequented by lots tourists. I tried the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and it was perfect. So delicious. This place was very mediocre and the service made the experience worse. We waited about an hour to be seated, only to be placed at a table we could have been seated at without waiting in the first place. When they finally called us, the waiter was extremely rude and asked for the chairs we had been sitting in while waiting in a very condescending way, saying, "Can you move? I need the chairs." After waiting all that time, they sat us outside at a small table for four, which honestly didn't require a wait at all. The host, Marquez, was rude the entire time. We were seated close to the bar where the manager could clearly hear us expressing our concerns during the entire meal, yet she never approached us. It wasn't until a kind waiter went to get her that she came over. When she did, her response was simply, "Well, what do you want me to do?" As a manager, you should already know how to address customer concerns. We weren't asking for anything free -- we simply expected a table big enough for our group and to be seated inside since it was cold outside. We really wanted to love it here. The music was great, and we had just ordered our margaritas when an issue came up. We had walked from the other side of Main and were pretty hot, so I noticed the table in front of us was under a fan that was unplugged. I politely asked a busser if he could plug it in, and he did. Almost immediately, the table of women nearest to the fan became upset that it was on. We offered to switch tables with them, but they declined. They then spoke with a staff member who came over and unplugged the fan. I explained that we had offered to move and would really appreciate leaving the fan on, but she told me that the other table had been there first and suggested that we find another table instead. The place was packed on a Saturday night -- there were no open seats under other fans, or anywhere outside. She didn't offer to help us find another spot or apologize for the situation. Instead, she told me to "try to see things from their perspective." We decided to leave. On the way out, I spoke with the manager, who seemed equally uninterested and repeated that we could find another seat. She then had to tend to another guest who appeared to be suffering from heatstroke, which was understandable. By the time a table finally opened up, we were already disappointed in how we'd been treated and chose to take our business elsewhere. The moral of the story: make sure you're "there first" if you expect to be treated kindly. Customer service clearly isn't their priority, which is a real shame -- we were genuinely looking forward to enjoying our evening here read more
