This was our second trip to Jacks and it was even better the second time. Our steak was absolutely the best steak we have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection. Unbelievable! The sides were delicious. My wife and I split everything and it was plenty. On top of the outstanding food is the service. EVERYONE was friendly and extremely helpful. From our bartender Theresa to our waitress Allison, they were all very friendly and accommodating. The ambiance is incredible. Elegant dining in Fredericksburg. Located on Main Street a little bit off the beaten path, this is a great dining establishment unlike many of the others in town. They encourage more Formal which is refreshing in a town where most restaurants invite casual. We were on time for our reservation, but waited a few minutes in their small waiting area. The hostess/manager had a bit of a school principal attitude, but overall was pleasant. We were seated in a small room amongst several other tables, but still felt intimate. The lighting is a bit on the dark side, but the candles bring out a great atmosphere. A violinist and cello created a romantic feeling (Enchanted Rock Orchestra Strolling Duo). We started with cocktails, which were crafted beautifully. The menu has old classics as well as innovative ones. For the appetizers, we had the focaccia bread which was delicious as well as the stuffed mushrooms which were delicately made and quite tasty. The wine list is short but encompasses Old world and New World wines. My wife had a Bordeaux while I had a Tuscany blend. Both delicious. For our entrées, we shared the filet mignon with peppercorn sauce with candied brussels sprouts and hand whipped mashed potatoes as sides. The food was surprisingly delicious, well presented and portioned. We truly enjoyed our entrées. For dessert we had the bananas foster cheesecake. Unique, not too sweet, delicious ending. Wagyu should taste highly flavorful! - Mashed potatoes were authentic, yet also bland and lacked flavor. - Great cocktails and wine options. - Very limited space inside. It's difficult to walk to the bar or bathroom without running into multiple people, so if you prefer spacious areas, lookup pics of this place first! - Charging around $20 per person to book a reservation (refunded at check-in) and being unable to change a reservation the day before, even when the restaurant still shows availability, is ridiculous. I've visited tiny islands where the locals truly depend on tourism for every dollar of their livelihood, so you can't tell me this restaurant needs to charge for reservations to survive. I've never experienced this anywhere as a frequent traveler! - I respect their strict NO ball caps policy, but it was odd that my husband and I had a large naked Marilyn Monroe portrait on the wall for our main view. What an abysmal experience. I rarely write bad reviews and The two stars are only because our server was so kind and professional. The stuffed mushrooms and the bread are the only things I would recommend if you brave this place. I tried the chicken parm - weirdest thing ever, you have to order and pay for pasta with this?? What? I had 4 bites two of which had so much hard gristle it was inedible. The pasta was orange (think canned) and dry. A very small beaker of decoy wine was 17. Don't waste your time or money. Our waitress was very friendly, food took a LONG time. Food came out and one dish was sent back because it did not look good, it did not taste good. The other dishes were average, they did not reflect the quality of the prices. There was a 22% gratuity charge for our party and 3% credit card charge. The credit card charge was the cherry on the top. Although we have heard of such charges at a few places, it doesn't make it right. Our bill was a little over $700, not sure who carries that amount around. Anyway, be aware of this and just the average flavor of this place. We celebrated a birthday and they charged for the slice of average cheesecake. Our drinks were not refilled, probably bc she knew she would get her 22% tip no matter what. Wow what a beautiful ambiance inside, I love all of the black and white photos of different celebrities. There wasn't a wait whenever we came and we didn't have a reservation, however I could see this place getting busy. For an appetizer we had the Bada Bing Calamari and the sauce it's tossed in tastes very similar to orange chicken, very different than any calamari I've tried before. My sister ordered the sliders and said they were cooked really well. I got the Lemon Chicken Scallopini and wow the flavor is incredible plus the chicken was battered perfectly. This place was incredible--easily one of my top ten dining experiences ever. From the moment we walked up, even being greeted by a server coming in from the patio, to the warm welcome from the hostess and staff as we entered and were seated, it felt as though we were being invited into someone's home. Amanda started by bringing out a complimentary tomato and mozzarella appetizer, and she continued to be an attentive, friendly server who made the experience even better. The Parmesan trout was outstanding, and the ribeye arrived on a sizzling hot plate, bathed in melted butter--absolutely unforgettable. And the mashed potatoes? I wish I could have those at Thanksgiving. The Mulberry Street Tartufo Sundae was enjoyed by my husband and was definitely large enough for two to three people--he even took some home. My only disappointment was the crème brûlée; the top didn't "crack" as expected and instead had a thick, chewy layer that I ended up not eating. Came here on a random weekend. The good: Our waitress was very friendly and polite. It's a cute restaurant with a lot of JFK memorabilia. The not so good: Ordered a rib eye and I really think they gave us a strip. There was no marbling and it was extremely tough and very difficult to chew. The texture and taste was more like a strip than a ribeye. If it actually was the rib eye, it is the toughest ribeye I've ever had. The flavor was good though (and had a very beefy taste like a strip). Ordered medium rare and it was cooked correctly (medium rare) so that's good. FYI it is pre-sliced. The hamburger was probably the dryest hamburger I've had in my life. It was ordered medium rare and it came out well done like a leather shoe. It even crumbled apart because it was so dry. I added bacon and even the bacon was dry! I have no idea what happened. Fries were good though. Trout was a little dry and bland. It was fresh though. Asked for a side of any kind of sauce they had. They brought out bernaise sauce (extra $4 charge on the bill) The food took an incredibly long time to come out. I think we waited for an hour. I really wanted to like this place, especially since our waitress was great but I won't come back and don't recommend this place. The food didn't hit the mark. Everything went well! We had a lackluster anniversary dinner the evening before and this place definitely made up for it. The ambience was relaxed and inviting. We were sat near the front to the side of the bar. It was a busy spot and not the most romantic, but this was easily overlooked by the live instrumental music, a violinist and bassist were a welcoming touch. They helped set the mood. On our table was a plaque recognizing our 25th anniversary celebration, which was a nice touch. Our waitress immediately approached us, welcomed us, and congratulated us. She was engaging and on her game the entire evening. For drinks, I ordered the NY Sour and my partner a glass of Decoy red wine. They were promptly brought to us. Our waitress gave us breathing room to enjoy our drinks before placing our order. While doing so, the hostess came by and lit our candle. When we were finally ready to order, the decision was simple. We were lucky enough to be there on T-bone Thursdays. The meal consisted of an 18 Oz pre-cut T-bone with mashed potatoes and glazed carrots. Plenty for us to share. It was amazing. Since our go-to steak is usually ribeye, we had not had a T-bone in quite a while, and it was worth the wait. One of the better steaks we have ever had, seasoned well and cooked perfectly medium rare. The potatoes were solid, but shown up by the carrots. Even sharing it, we could not finish it, especially once we were told we would be given a complimentary cheesecake. Might I add, one of the creamiest and most flavorful ones ever. This was such a nice touch, and we got to enjoy the artwork and live music as we waited. Our server was very professional and kind, and the service was great all around. They were tasty and cooked well, but there were quite a few gristly pieces in both steaks we ordered. This wasn't a big deal for us since the portions are so huge, you could just eat around them. Next time we might order a fish or pasta and steak to share. I do think this is one of the best places to eat in Fredericksburg. I've been to Jack's a few times and had great experiences, but I felt like this past time there were a few things that you would want to know when making a resolution: 1. they are having some air-conditioning issues so the room that is next to the bar is exceptionally cold. When making your reservation I would ask to be seated in one of the other rooms. 2. I feel like every restaurant does their steak temperatures a little different, which is totally fine. But sometimes I feel like having a reference point helps you know how you might want to order. So I attached a picture of medium rare. Busy little spot so make a reservation and be on time - we were 10 mins late but by the time we got to the host in line, we were 15 mins late. This was our first time at Jack's Steakhouse. For our last night in Fredericksburg, we splurged a bit and came to Jack's. And they did not disappoint. We were a bit early for our 6 pm reservation on a Sunday night and sat comfortably on seating near the hostess station. We got seated and water came right away. Our server, Megan arrived and greeted us warmly. She too our drink order while we perused the menu. Bread, oil and vinegar was brought out soon after. It was a nice touch and tasty too. We both had Old Fashioneds and I had the Smoked version. The cocktails were great. Megan returned and told us a bit about the menu. We ended up splitting the following: - Small Wedge Salad - Creamed Spinach - 12 oz Bone-In Filet The salad was huge and very good. The creamed spinach was amazing and also a large side order. The steak was cooked medium rare like we ordered and was also very good. We ordered Cannolis to go for dessert. What a great experience. For a Mother's Day brunch in Fredericksburg, we ordered from Jacks Chophouse. We went to pick up the food on Sunday and Mike was the person that greeted us! He was so kind! I didn't meet the chef but kudos to them too! The food they prepared was so fresh as they were taking it out of the oven as we arrived! We ordered salmon, chicken, short rib, a Caesar salad, wedge salad, brussle sprouts, and asparagus. We also had two cheesecakes. Everything was tasty! Standouts: The salmon was cooked to perfection! "The Mexican" martini may now be my wife's fave drink. They have a decent bottled beer selection. Glad they had a blonde ale (Fireman's #4). Our waitress was great. We were promptly served freshly baked complementary bread with olive oil, balsamic and seasonings was very good. The homemade dressing on our Italian house salad was excellent and the ingredients fresh and crisp. The House Antipasto sampler appetizer was a meal all to itself. You get a 1/2 portion of their amazing lasagna which was a Top-3 ever tried lasagna for me. Particular stand outs were the mozzarella covered asparagus (best asparagus ever?) and the sausage stuffed mushrooms. We were so full after the bread, appetizers, and salad we skipped an an entrée and went straight to the dessert. If you like desserts, do not pass on the Tartufo! Definitely a top-3 dessert for me and probably the best ice cream sundae I have ever tasted. The banana-rum sauce tied all the flavorings together. This is now our new favorite upscale eatery in FBG. If you plan to go with a group, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Waitress and other staff were awful. We came in with a group of six people and were told that we had to get a price fix menu and could not order what we wanted. This was never disclosed when booking our reservation. This meal included Caesar salad (great), meatballs (tasted like frozen grocery store meatballs), lasagna (nothing special but good), a tomahawk steak (great but undercooked, was completely raw) and a strange assortment of desserts (cheesecake, cannolis, and a very odd ice cream ball). When we arrived and shared our dissatisfaction with having to get a fixed menu, our waitress asked if we had ever had a four course meal. It was extremely condescending. After being told there was nothing they could do, we agreed to eat whatever they brought out. We had a 9 month old baby that was teething and the meal dragged on for two hours. We all had to take turns walking him outside, and our waitress never addressed this. The meal dragged on and on as we all just want to leave. To top it all off, they added a 22% gratuity for the nonexistent service we received AND charged us a $25 credit card fee.. like we would pay the more than $1000 meal with cash. Needless to say we will not return. I'm not sure why our waitress never asked if she could do anything to make it right. It was obvious that because the tip was included she felt like it was alright to treat us like garbage.. Special shout to Alesya tonight and her incredible service as usual. She also waited on us Tuesday night at the bar. If you haven't been to Jacks Chop House and you're looking for a quality experience, I highly recommend it. They still have the BEST HAPPY HOUR in Fredericksburg in my opinion. Typically you will find Theresa, Carlos, or Alesya behind the bar and depending on the day. Three incredible bartenders. Theresa makes a fabulous cremebrule martini and Carlos makes a delicious Gin and Jam. I also want to mention the two men who greet you at the door. They often get over looked. I recently recommend Jacks to two FEMA employees during the flooding. They were exhausted and just wanted to relax and enjoy a nice meal and were disappointed that they couldn't get a reservation. I contacted one of the gentlemen, and determined that they could accommodate the FEMA agents if they were open to sitting at the bar and about 30 minutes later. The ladies reached out afterwards and left a wonderful review thanking me for the recommendation. And to the crew behind the scene. It doesn't matter if it's a steak, or appetizers. I have never ordered an item that wasn't cooked to order. The presentation is always on par. And yes, if you don't think you can handle the steak on your own, they will split/share. Don't like your meat cooked the same as your dinner date, not a problem. My husband says aged beef should be eaten rare. I prefer mine more medium. They made it happen. read more
