This was a pit-stop on our way to our cabin destination. So we stopped and had a drink and appetizer for the taste-testing of it all. I had the flight because I'm always indecisive on beers or ciders to try, but found that they were all pretty good (even for someone that doesn't like beers THAT much). I am a stout fan and really liked the "Boch." It was really busy, as it usually is as a "tourist spot" yet we got a seat at the bar to fasten the wait. The pretzel was yum 6/10-would have loved another sauce to try.

Known as the "Castle" Altstadt Brewery was a very cool place to visit. We got there right when the opened to enjoy another German lunch at the Restaurant at the Brewery. The restaurant had the old luxurious look with lots of wood. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel and Altstadt beer from the tap. The service was great and no problem parking outside. The Jägerschnitzel was prepared different from what I had on Main Street in Fredericksburg, but still had great flavor and prepared very well. After eating we explored the rest of the brewery and found a large tap room with big windows to see the formation tanks. There was both indoor seating and outdoor. Souvenirs can be purchased here and took home a six pack and beer glass. Its was definitely a place to stop on our way home.

Service was great from the greeter to the rest of the team. Food was fresh and well made. No music outside what really helped to keep a conversation going. Busy but was Sunday lunch hour so was expected. Plenty parking space! Big rooms and knowledgeable people to help you with your choices. Woman's restroom can use a detail cleaning and floors needed to be mop. That is why I give a 4 star review.

We came to Fredericksburg for the weekend and ended up stopping at Alstadt a couple of times. They have lots of indoor and outdoor seating spaces great for large groups or couples. The staff is some of the friendliest that I have ever met and the overall hospitality is fantastic. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is that the menu items are hit or miss when it comes to an enjoyable meal or man I wished I would have ordered something else. Dishes I would highly recommend, their chili, the peach bruschetta, the mashed potatoes are some of the best I have ever had and the chicken and waffles!

Beautiful place. Hard to call it just a "brewery"

Brewery #373 This place is like the Biltmore House of breweries. It's beautiful and huge! If they didn't have a big sign out front, you definitely would think you are in the wrong place. We came in just to get some beer, but it had more of a restaurant feel than traditional brewery. We sat in the bar area, and whenever I go to a new brewery, I always get a flight to try multiple beers. Altstadt has flights but they are prefixed, you can't make your own. Slight irritation but nothing major. I ended up getting a more German style flight with a Kolsch, Hefe, Lager, and Amber. They were all good with the Hefe being my favorite. I am usually an IPA fan, and they had one, but I was not able to try it. We weren't that hungry, so we just ordered some fries with beer cheese. These were crisp little pillows of heaven, and the cheese was a perfect dip. The menu was heaven on German food, but there's a wide range with some upscale items as well. The place was probably too fancy for me and my Homer Simpson hoodie, but they were still accommodating. Next time I will wear better clothes and have dinner but let me pick my own flight please.

Altstadt Brewery never disappoints no matter how many times I visit or what the purpose is. I've gone for bar food and drinks and full sit down meals and it has all exceeded my expectations. For this visit we ate in the restaurant area for a full meal. The sandwiches we had were as delicious as they look in the photos. We definitely got our moneys worth and our bellies filled! The service is always great no matter where you are from the bar to the outdoor area or the restaurant, and this visit to the restaurant area was no different. Our food came out quickly, perfectly cooked and delicious. The decor in the restaurant conveys with the rest of the old German style building with a cozy feel. This is a great place to stop for a meal or a snack and some great beer when visiting Fredericksburg.

The beer is so good. The grounds and brewery are like being at a mansion. The food is authentic German style food. We love coming here!! The service is attentive and friendly.

Oh my gosh Alstadt was an amazing stop in our Fredericksburg trip! My husband got a flight, I got a frozen limoncello, and we both split a Bavarian pretzel ... get the peach ridler beer!!! We went home with a 4pk. Also the service was amazing, everyone was so helpful in explaining the dining options.

We came here on a whim. First time and it went really well. We sampled several items. We had the pretzel, Bavarian sausage plate, kids cheese burger, house chips and something else with meat and cheese. Beware of the mustard. A dab goes a long way. The server was polite and attentive even though he was very busy and even making drinks. The ambiance was kind of like an upscale lodge. They do brewery tours which we may book next time.

Alstdat Brewery totally hit the spot! I went with some friends and we had such a great time. I ordered the flammkuchen for my meal and it was delicious, crispy, flavorful, just the right amount of toppings. My husband got the Bavarian sausage plate and he loved it; so full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The atmosphere there is really chill and beautiful, cozy seating, and perfect for catching up with friends. Plus, our server was amazing! super attentive and friendly without being over the top. Made the whole experience even better. If you're looking for a spot to relax, eat great food, and enjoy some quality time with friends, Alstdat Brewery is where you want to be. We're definitely coming back soon!

We made a pit stop on our way to Fredericksburg and loved the pretzels, charcuterie board and beer. They have 4 different spaces to choose from, bar, restaurant, music hall or the outdoor patio. Excellent location for large groups. It was a hot day, but we sat outside. The only thing I missed from the menu was Obatzda.

Not so good things: Sitting outside was nice, except the musicians had their music way too loud for the size of the space and it was a restaurant, not a concert venue. We literally had to yell to hear each or the server. The kitchen was backed up so it took forever for our food to arrive. The food was also pretty expensive. We don't visit Fredericksburg very often, but I think we'll stick with Auslander when we want German food.

But on our visit on a Sunday night, these rooms were nearly empty. My diet coke was flat and had no bubbles. I asked for a replacement with carbonation, but the replacement was no better. I'd been looking forward to having sauerbraten. It's one of my favorite German dishes but is hard to find. When I ordered it, I was astonished when the waiter said, "Can I steer you away from the sauerbraten? It's... inconsistent. It can be fatty with grizzle." He continued on, "One lady sent it back. I chopped it up and gave it to my dog - and the dog wouldn't eat it." Well, that ringing endorsement certainly didn't make for an appetizing start to dinner. I changed my order to roulade with red cabbage and a dinner salad. My wife had the jaegerschnitzel with spaetzle, red cabbage, and a dinner salad. The food itself was fine. The dark German bread was excellent. All of the food was good, though the red cabbage was too vinegary for my wife's liking. 3 stars for the food we had, 2 stars for the experience. Friedhelm's feels like a once-great German restaurant in decline.

The brewery was the first place I ever had a scotch egg, my dad would get a small beer flight, maybe we'd get a brat, he made it fun. I'm pretty sure it had just opened back then. We got into town, checked in at the Trueheart Hotel, and immediately walked to the brewery because I was so excited. I probably went in to this with the unrealistic expectation that it would be the same as when I was a kid. It had a great start. The hostess was nice, and our server was, too. I wish we had gotten to sit in the back room with the long tables, We started with the beer flight and a scotch egg. The beer flight was okay. I was expecting really good German beers, mind-blowing, but these were just fine. A pale ale, an IPA, a flat porter were on the list, just not a memorable selection, although the red ale was good. The flight was a good price, though. For our appetizer, I wasn't expecting such a small scotch egg for $9. I mean, it was really small. I've been to several places around my area for scotch eggs, and they're usually $11-12 for two and they're properly sized. But we're on vacation and I wanted nostalgia so fine. It was delicious, and the creole mustard the scotch egg comes with was divine. More on that later. For our meals we tried both schnitzels. I was disappointed they don't have spaetzle, I'm pretty sure they used to. My boyfriend had the schinken and I had the jager. I don't like ham but his was infinitely better because of the gravy. The gravy on the jager schnitzel I got was heavy with some seasoning, maybe sage. It's all I could taste, and I couldn't just push the gravy off because my pork was fried to death. I barely ate any of mine. The sides we got (you get two per plate) were German potato salad, fries, onion rings, and vegetable medley. The fries and onion rings were great, especially when dipping in the creole mustard we saved from the scotch egg. The German potato salad is supposed to be sweet and sour and my boyfriend usually likes it, but this was way sweet, he wasn't a fan. The vegetable medley was good, but seemed really out of place as a side, normally with schnitzel you'd expect green beans or a salad or something, we got broccoli and squash. They did have a side salad, but it was $5. Not sure why a side salad couldn't just replace the two sides for no upcharge. I will say the rolls were awesome. At the end our server let us sit and hang out for a few minutes, he didn't rush us. We asked if they sell the creole mustard in bottles but they don't, so he said we could pay $5 for a togo container of it. We got probably a cup, so I was fine with that, I really loved it that much. We paid, I noticed he charged us $5 for tarter sauce that we didn't have, figured it was the only way to ring up the mustard. We left with our prized creole mustard. Cut to this weekend when we opened it to make a sandwich, and what we actually got was tarter sauce, so somewhere along the way he'd forgotten what we asked for. We live 200 miles from Fredericksburg, there's no fixing that, but maybe that's on me because I should have checked it. They really should sell bottles of that mustard, it's very good. Overall, it just wasn't the experience I was expecting. It's not the same, it's been over 30 years so I totally understand, and I did try to be fair with my critique. It wasn't great, it was just okay.

Since there are no business owner responses, the problems could be persisting. However, we've enjoyed our time here in the past so we thought we'd try it again. We got here at 5 pm on a Thursday and the place was mostly empty. That usually translates into better service and likely a better prepared meal as well. Sure enough, this theory was correct. We had two craft beers on the table within three minutes followed by Ruben fritters five minutes after that. The menu here is pretty simple with the expected German twist to it. We just stuck to a salad and burger. The salad was fresh and good, but the burger was pretty average and you have to add your own mayo and mustard. Even by adding cheese and mushrooms it still fell within the three star range and the fries were just OK. The beers were correct to style, but the hoppier beers were slightly tame. It's pretty much three stars overall, but the service was great so 31/2*. I'd still come back and try something else off the menu before the weekend and before 6.

The place seemed to have a fun and lively atmosphere, but the was its only saving grace. When our server came out he seemed to be under some kind of influence. He informed us he was new so we gave him the benefit of the doubt. My dad jokingly said we were gonna leave on that matter and I wish we would have. For starters, our tea came out sour and UNDRINKABLE. We had to send them back in that account. Additionally, when we asked for lemon for our drinks, the server brought out ONE lemon in his hand. No bowl, not in the glass, just carrying it. Our food came out staggered and we had to constantly remind them of our order. The food itself was mediocre at best and we were heavily disappointed. !!! For the cherry on top, when our waiter was bringing out my sisters plate he ATE A FRY directly off the plate RIGHT in front of us. !!! At this point we were irritated and ready to leave. We ask for the check and were overcharged for 2 extra drinks. We made the server correct the order and comp the fries he ate. While waiting for the check, I went to go have a talk with the manger (something we NEVER do). The manager was stunned, but unapologetic.
