In terms of size and majestic ambiance, it reminded me of Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, New York. We stopped in for lunch on a weekday and still had about a 30-minute wait for a table. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem because we were able to enjoy a beer while waiting and take in the scenery. The property is large enough that exploring it becomes part of the experience. The beer selection is heavily focused on German styles, which was perfect for me. Whether you enjoy lagers, pilsners, bocks, or wheat beers, there is something for every fan of traditional German brewing. One of the fun touches is that many of the beers are available in liter size pours, adding to the authentic beer hall experience. This was a pit-stop on our way to our cabin destination. So we stopped and had a drink and appetizer for the taste-testing of it all. I had the flight because I'm always indecisive on beers or ciders to try, but found that they were all pretty good (even for someone that doesn't like beers THAT much). We went for Father's Day Surprisingly they were not busy. Our server was sweet. However, he kept forgetting things we ordered or drinks and got them almost at the end of our meal. We kept asking for straws. We still wouldn't get them, but the worst part was at the food was definitely not the greatest. We also ordered 2 desserts. What was the most disappointing. The cheesecake that we ordered was a peach flavor, and it tasted like a peach yogurt, and the chocolate molten lava cake did not have any melted chocolate inside. It was more like a brownie with chocolate chips for the price. Definitely not worth it. The building itself is beautiful. It looks like a castle and interior is busy, and it has a lot of different rooms. I suppose. Known as the "Castle" Altstadt Brewery was a very cool place to visit. We got there right when the opened to enjoy another German lunch at the Restaurant at the Brewery. The restaurant had the old luxurious look with lots of wood. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel and Altstadt beer from the tap. The service was great and no problem parking outside. The Jägerschnitzel was prepared different from what I had on Main Street in Fredericksburg, but still had great flavor and prepared very well. After eating we explored the rest of the brewery and found a large tap room with big windows to see the formation tanks. There was both indoor seating and outdoor. Souvenirs can be purchased here and took home a six pack and beer glass. Its was definitely a place to stop on our way home. read more

We came to Fredericksburg for the weekend and ended up stopping at Alstadt a couple of times. They have lots of indoor and outdoor seating spaces great for large groups or couples. The staff is some of the friendliest that I have ever met and the overall hospitality is fantastic. Brewery #373 This place is like the Biltmore House of breweries. It's beautiful and huge! If they didn't have a big sign out front, you definitely would think you are in the wrong place. We came in just to get some beer, but it had more of a restaurant feel than traditional brewery. We sat in the bar area, and whenever I go to a new brewery, I always get a flight to try multiple beers. Altstadt has flights but they are prefixed, you can't make your own. Slight irritation but nothing major. I ended up getting a more German style flight with a Kolsch, Hefe, Lager, and Amber. They were all good with the Hefe being my favorite. I am usually an IPA fan, and they had one, but I was not able to try it. We weren't that hungry, so we just ordered some fries with beer cheese. These were crisp little pillows of heaven, and the cheese was a perfect dip. The menu was heaven on German food, but there's a wide range with some upscale items as well. The place was probably too fancy for me and my Homer Simpson hoodie, but they were still accommodating. It's okay. Very corporate-y. Not the usual ambiance and setup for a brewery. It starts when you enter (actually, you'll know something is up when you see the chateau-like building from the road). Walking in it looks like a high end hotel with a desk (?) which is I guess where you can pay for beer to go and apparel. I sat at a bar (not the one in the restaurant- that's only for people eating ) and saw a guy had a flight. I told the bartender I'll get a flight and she pointed me to a corner of the menu and said "here are our flights ". What the heck? I've never been to a place where you don't make your own flight up. If you can do this here she didn't tell me. Of their three flights each had two beers I would never order or downright dislike. When we booked our trip to Fredericksburg, Altstadt Brewery was a "must see." It is about a 12 minute drive from the downtown area, but it is worth the drive just to see the structure alone! It's not every day that one comes across a Bavarian castle in the Texas countryside. The property is stunning and so clean. They offer "taproom exclusive" beers and have a nice selection of unique souvenirs. Their beers are also only $3 a pint during happy hour! We decided to eat there as well. A truly unique gem that Fredericksburg has to offer. Walking in feels like stepping into a grand estate tucked away in the Bavarian Alps. The space is incredibly expansive, and the craftsmanship throughout is impressive. The downstairs parlor/speakeasy was easily my favorite spot which was full of character and atmosphere. Very authentic offerings in a comfortable "gasthouse" type setting. The menu would be what I'd call a "pub" type. .We've had their sausage plate, which was very good. This time we had the Jagerschnitzle, (which is where our Texan Chicken Fried Steak came from.) The Schnitzel was very tender and the mushroom gravy was rich and flavorful.. The schnitzel sat on to of a bed of mashed potatoes. We topped it off with their lager, which was light and crisp. Nice open area with spacious settings in which you can enjoy great food with your friends and family. If you are visiting Fredericksburg its probably worth the short drive to the outskirts of town to check out Altstadt Brewery. The good: Great building and property, has lots of inside and outside space, good parking, and an awesome German style building. Great selection of merchandise. large menu and beer selection. Family friendly and good for large groups. The not so good: service is always just ok. food is not cheap and for the most part is just average. Your best bet is ordering the large boards so there is a selection of things. I just find that in general the food is closer to festival quality and not restaurant quality. They close early most nights 8 or 9pm, not a late night spot. Beers are fine, There are a few I like and a few that I would not order again. Comment on the food. In general the German food in Fredericksburg is mid at best. I would say that Altstadt is the best I have had there and if you are really wanting German food go here for it and not the overcrowded overpriced places in town. In general I like Altstadt even with its flaws its still worth a visit if you are in that part of Texas. read more

We visited on two separate days with 2 very different experiences. First was at night and we were on the pub side of the complex, but in the back outside. Ordered on my phone through the online system and paid. Food came out in a decent time and drinks were ready quite quick. I just didn't realize that I had to go inside to pick it up at the bar by myself. Not much service on the pub side, so tip as you see fit. Charcuterie board and pretzel are mediocre at best. Beer was tasty but nothing to write home about. The second visit me made was for lunch the next day. We were seated outside since we had a lil pup with us. Nice, spacious covered seating with s relaxing view. On this part of the complex, the food really shines. I HIGHLY recommend the Jägerschnitzel and Das Reuben Sandwich. Both were fantastic!
