We really liked the lobster pot buoys and asked the manager if we could buy a few. He was really nice about it, but said "we would have nothing left if we sold our old buoys to everyone that asked, let me tell you about this store on the way out of town." The Blacksheep Trading Company.... They have a bit of everything it seems....tin signs, posters, pelts, and of course wood lobster traps and buoys. It was so cool talking with one of the owners Betsy who gave us a lot of history on the lobster buoys. So many great stories. They are located about 15 minutes outside of Bar Harbor and well worth a visit to browse their great selection.

Dishonest scammers! Had the service team come out to replace the insulation in my stove (which they…read moresaid they do when I stopped in to ask in person) but they didn't have the replacement insulation with them when they came. Instead of calling me or saying they can't when I made the appointment, they showed up knowing they couldn't do any work and charged me $140 for the service call. Waste of time and money for absolutely nothing! While at my house they told me I could order stove insulation on Amazon and cut it to size, which tells that it's a universal standard and not some unique part for my stove. They either didn't want to do the work so they said they didn't have it so they could go home early, or they knew in advance so they could scam me. Can't believe how dishonest this local business is. And the cherry on top is they said they would call me in the morning to give me an estimated time of when they would come but I never got a call. I called them around 11 to find out and they said between 2-4, they showed at 4:15. I waited all day for them just to be scammed This happened 3 months ago and today they sent me an invoice for service. I called and spoke with a woman over in finance, explained what happened, told her the credit card company agreed with me and refunded me, and she said they will never do business with me again and hung up on me... as if I would ever go to them again lol

I first came to US Bells four years ago and made a purchase of a large bell for about $350. It…read morestill hangs in our backyard and reminds me of Maine every time it rings. It is very pleasant sounding, and not overbearing to any neighbor. It's almost like a sea buoy when a storm passes through. We were again in the area for this year's trip and decided to make a return visit. The bells were all the same and pretty much nothing has changed. The store is about a 10x20 room more than half filled with all kinds of different sized bells. Most are singles, but they also have doubles and triples, too. Some of them look like mobiles. The clappers are not inside the bells, but outside usually made of mahogany wood or metal. The other part of the store has pottery for sale. This is a family run business which I'm always willing to help out if possible. On this trip, we were allowed to check out the foundry which was in a building right next door. It was amazing to see and feel the different sands used to make the molds, and if we were to have showed up a few hours earlier, we probably could have seen a brass pour. The counter person told us that the finish work once cooled is quite labor intensive which is why the bells are expensive. Today, I picked up a triple bell with a higher ringtone that will complement my big bell in my backyard. It was $135 and looks like the one in the photo above. An added bonus was that the day we visited was eclipse day, and we got to "see" the eclipse while at the store. Hopefully, we'll be back before 2024! I would highly recommend US Bells if you have a desire for something that not only can you appreciate it's design, but it's sound can remind you of Maine! Sight and sound!

It's really an awesome hardware (and much more) store that saves time and surprisingly... money. I've found prices often beat the big box stores of Ellsworth. Run by highly-regarded local contractor Brent Hurd and his wife Cheryl, the product mix is logical and varied and selected to address the needs of each season. They even carry ice fishing and camping products. Conveniently located on Route 1, I always take a minute to check the store for what I need and save myself the long drive to Ellsworth. Apparently one of the screws holding my lenses in their frame decided to take a permanent side trip and this morning one lense popped out. I could find no relief in Bar Harbor and called Dr. Albert's office. They said come by and they would see what they could do. Although they appeared to be busy when I showed up they immediately knew who I was and said "Sit down and relax and we will take a look". I had only a few minutes to "relax" before they fixed my glasses but during that time I looked around. My impression was that this office was very well organised/run and the ladies that helped me were courteous and obviously competent. Also, there was a large display area for frames, etc. so that patients would have a big selection to choose from. To top if off they would not accept any payment. After refusing any further service he started being unreasonably rude to me and my dad. I then walked out of the store.
