I hav become a huge fan of this place. Order lunch from here about once a month. My fave is the Chicken Salad sandwich. One of the best ive ever had. They put this stuff called Gribenes in it which I originally thought was bacon but is actually fried chicken skin. Its amazing. Mixed with the sour pickles on the toasted Challah bread. Chefs kiss. Another fave sandwich is the Grandpa. Smoked Turkey, Slaw and Mustard. Truly greater than the sum of its parts. The Smoked Meat is good but I would prefer traditional Pastrami more and Im not a fan of the Poutine as the gravy was weak and I dont like cheese curds in the least but the fries themselves are terrific. I get them as is. The knish is new take with more of a pastry shell and its really good. The slaw is more vinegar based than mayo. Goes well on a sandwich but not great on its own. read more

It's good... I've been back 3 times in the last two weeks for breakfast. Everything I've had is stellar, but I have to recommend the Smoked Meat Hash, it's hearty potatoes and meat with a side of over easy eggs - the hash has the perfect hint of crunch from burnt edges. Safta's Pancakes are a classic, thin and yummy. It comes with the syrup already on the pancake, so I'd personally ask to hold the syrup on the side so you can control the drizzle and sweetness. Have you ever visited a restaurant and loved the food, ambience and service that you just can't wait to go back? In the same week? Well.. that's what happened with me and Mile End. I came here for a Yelp event earlier in the week and decided that my mom, who saw the photos of the Yelp event and wanted a piece of the action! As luck would have it, we were in the neighborhood and voila! We were welcomed by Allie and Manager Angie, who remembered me from the Yelp event. The menu has so many delicious options from schnitzel, to Zaa' tar chicken, Reuben sandwich latkes ... a Jewish feast! I knew exactly what I wanted; the pickled brine fried chicken with a side of their delicious fries. My mom chose the hamburger with fries. The chicken wasn't on the menu but the kitchen made it for me! The chicken's portion came with four pieces and the fries were plentiful and delicious. I was in Jewish paradise! The chicken once again, perfectly cooked, tender and the coating was scrumptious. I ordered the Canadian beer, Labat. My mom's burger was also delicious and she loved the fries. I asked to try the Jewish BBQ sauce and Allie brought it out; good taste but needs to be thicker. I asked Angie to show me the Shabbat Dinner Menu ( see pic). I'm impressed with the options: choice of schnitzel, brisket, Zatar chicken or salmon served with noodle kugel, matzoh ball soup and babka for $45. We also ordered Matzoh ball soup, knish and latkes to go. I forgot to ask them to divide the soup into two containers so mom lucked out with that and the knish and I took home the latkes We also received chocolate babka on the house. So I saw their limited "Olympic poutines" on instagram and really wanted to try one of them out. I went on Uber Eats but there was no option for it so called to place the delivery instead. I was told I had to order online. When I told him there is no option for the Olympic poutines, he said to order a different one and put in the notes the one I wanted. So I did what he said and ended up getting the wrong one...the Olympic poutine was the main reason I placed the order so I was super disappointed. I wouldn't have minded if the food was good but the spicy schnitzel sandwich I got was so disappointing. The Schnitzel was nice and crispy, but had ZERO flavor. I felt like I was eating a tomato, lettuce sandwich on a hard dry brioche..it needed more sauce or something to add flavor and moisture to it. Even the pickle couldn't salvage it, it wasn't a vinegar brine pickle that I was expecting but more like a plain salted cucumber. I came here on Saturday with my bf for the House of dragon collab at Mike ends. The place was very cozy and nice for some good comfort food and can say the fries with salsa verde was perfect and not spicy. The burger I had was medium rare and pretty juicy with crispy jalapeños. Montreal Jewish deli = dinner at bubbie's plus poutine. What's not to like? The place is small on the inside but has a mix of indoor and outdoor tables. It was a hard decision but I decided on the Smoked meat hash and was not disappointed. The brisket, potatoes, onion, and over easy egg was savory and salty. Fortunately the staff was quick with the water refills. Had a taste of my friend's Mont Royal. While the smoked salmon was on point, the latkes were not for me. They were crispy on the outside, but had more of a blended/mashed potato interior as opposed to a coarsely grated potato texture that I love. read more

Oy vey Mile End! Before I venture off to Montreal, I had to give this Montreal-Jewish deli a try, as it has been on my list for a while and finally had a purpose to try it. The service is friendly, but the food comes up a bit short. The matzo ball soup is a nice portion but it is bland in every way. It needs more salt and a bit more seasoning. Throw in some noodles or some more chicken! Unfortunately even the vegetables in the soup taste pretty bland. The smoked meat sandwich is pretty good. It has the perfect amount of meat and a nice portion of mustard in the sandwich so not to get overpower the sandwich. It is literally building blocks of meat built into a meal. The pickles and slaw side are alright, but I am more a mayo-based slaw fan than a vinegar based one. At least the brine makes it all go down in one piece. For an extra fee, you can get poutine with it. Of course I had to get it. It is decent, a good amount of cheese curds and the fries are crispy, especially on the ends, but the gravy tasted pretty bland. A little disappointing considering the dish I something I aim to try when I plan to visit Montreal. The restaurant gets pretty busy early as they also have breakfast items for people who want something along those lines. One last thing, the sandwich comes on seeded rye bread. They do not offer seedless rye. Offer seedless rye! It is easier on the stomach for those who have trouble digesting seeds. Cute little deli/diner in downtown. I didn't realize it was a sit-down restaurant, but was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere; it was very bright and welcoming. I felt that the latkes lacked some flavour, and I kinda wished I got a salmon bagel instead. I tried smoked meat for the first time. It was corned beef adjacent. I don't love corned beef so someone else probably would have enjoyed the thick cut sandwich more than I did. Not sure if this place changed hands in the last year, but their standards have gone out the window. Items are totally inconsistent from day to day. I went with a friend a few weeks ago and was excited to share my favorite dish - the bubbies poutine, usually loaded up with tender brisket and a rich dark jus. This time, the just was light and watery, and the brisket was flavorless. We had a chicken salad sandwich which was good, and came on rye. I just ordered delivery and got a few items I've ordered many times - the chicken salad sandwich, which for some reason came on thick crusty white bread. I had a burger which arrived completely cold, and a plate of latkes that were terrible, completely unseasoned. It's a shame because I love this place as a Canadian ex-pat, but I've had enough bad experiences I'll think twice before ordering again. Shame. read more

One of my goals while I was in New York was to find a classic NYC deli, getting an excellent sandwich while probably also getting treated at least a little rudely by a gruff man behind the counter. At the Mile End, I got one out of two of those things - but it was an altogether delightful experience. I happened to walk by the Mile End on my way to visit my daughter, and one peek at the menu told me I had to stop. Not one, but THREE varieties of Reuben (my favorite sandwich in the world), plus brisket and salami and pretty much every variety of "meat on bread" you can imagine. I didn't go inside but I was greeted at a walk-up window with (surprise!) a smile and a patient demeanor while I pored over all the options on the menu. There was outdoor seating that looked quite inviting - had I not been on my way somewhere else I would have gladly stopped to take in the Brooklyn vibe. When my sandwich was ready it was brought out to me with another smile and even a "Have a great day!" to see me off. No brusque attitude to be found at the Mile End, apparently. I opted for the Eli Reuben - the added twist of slaw and mustard had me intrigued. When I opened it up and took a bite I was immediately hit with a rich mix of flavors and a healthy helping of corned beef - not so much sliced as chopped into generous hunks of tender deliciousness. The sweet-and-spicy blend of Russian dressing and mustard confirmed that I'd made the right choice. Readers, I ate the whole thing and it was good to the last bite. So the Mile End didn't quite offer that classic NYC deli experience I'd been looking for. The sandwich was indeed delightful, but the service was shockingly welcoming and friendly. It wasn't the New York experience I'd expected, but I'd go back in a heartbeat - and next time, I'll sit outdoors and stay for a while. read more
