We had dinner just a few shops away from here and decided to stop here for some bubble tea after dinner. They had a weekly special on: Brown Sugar KitKat Greentea Cheesecake. We got one of those and a Durian Smoothie. I think we somehow missed the Greentea part of this drink cuz when we got it, hubby and I were both surprised at how green the drink was. It's only now that I look back at the photo I took of the menu that I realize the word Greentea was in the name of the drink so...not so surprising anymore that our drink was green. I honestly didn't taste much Greentea in it though. Mostly I tasted KitKat and Brown Sugar. Didn't taste any kind of Cheesecake flavor in it. It wasn't a bad drink but I think I prefer the fruity drinks that we've had from this place in the past. I think I'd have also preferred this drink to be slightly less sweet than it was. We brought our drinks home and had them while watching a movie. You would chew what should be a busting chewy bubble of sweetness, but was rather a harder lumpy and dry ball that lacked of flavor or sweetness. Decent and dumpy looking bubble tea shop on Kingsway. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as metered spots in front. The place is defintiely beaten up. Reminds me of a bathroom, with all the tiles on the wall. There is a red and white section - this is from back when the place was a Megabite pizza shop. Staff were friendly and helpful. The place has a large dedicated real fruit drink section, which is worth a special mention. Dare I say it - is this the Dragon Ball of the Joyce area? The drinks definitely taste like it. Awesome. probably the best boba ive ever had! i got the chicken and boba combo meal with the strawberry mango boba. It was delicious. There are so so many different flavours to choose from, and i'll definitely be coming back to try as many as i can! The chicken is good too, but the two times i've went they served different styles of chicken, one time it was karaage style and one time it was more kfc-style. both times it was very yummy though! The shop is pretty small, and theres not a huge amount of seating so if it's busy it might be hard to find a spot to sit. usually theres not a huge amount of people dining in, though. read more

To my knowledge, Milk & Sugar is one of two places in Metro Vancouver that does not charge for pearls or coconut jelly. In a city with so many bubble tea shops (which is especially the case along the stretch of Kingsway that Milk & Sugar is located in), prices can get pretty steep; the free pearls and jelly are a definite crowd pleaser. There are a ton of options, and the owners are really creative with their weekly drink specials (example: brown sugar taro cheesecake). What I've noticed too is that there is more of an emphasis on fruity drinks. Up until last year, I only really drank fruit slushes so this place was like paradise to me! However, now I have fully embraced milk tea and on my last trip I deviated from my usual mango pineapple slush to get a milk tea. I did not see any signage about being able to adjust sugar or ice levels, so I just ordered the drink as is. Next time, I'll definitely ask though because I found the milk tea way too sweet! Found this place on Yelp while I was looking for a good dessert place after dinner, and decided to give it a try due to the high 4/5 ratings. They had a sign outside that said what their specially discounted dessert items were. There were many options such as waffles, ice creams, and milk teas. The line was pretty long when I got there at around 9pm on Thursday night, which I waited for about 10 minutes until it was my turn to order. Normally I would ask to try the ice cream flavours before I ordered, but it didn't seem like they allow it here since they were pretty busy and they served more than ice cream here. I decided to try one scoop of the Ube flavour in a cone and it was a bit over $4, so it was pretty reasonable. However, the ice cream lacked the Ube flavour such that I had better Ube ice cream from the grocery store. It definitely didn't live up to my expectation as Ube is one of my favourite ice cream flavours, so I was left a little disappointed. read more

The local favourite: from the constant line ups on to the street, you can tell this joint is well loved. Milk & Sugar has been a community fixture for many, many years. I can't remember exactly when they opened, but I remember going after school for a treat. You can choose from powder, fresh fruit, or fresh fruit with ice cream. Super impressed with their prices and quality - I got a large White Chocolate Oreo Cheesecake slush (one of their specials) and it was only $4. They have some rotating weekly specials which are more adventurous in addition to a good selection of regular options. The slush was great, very rich and creamy, and the oreo pieces were small enough that I didn't have any get stuck in the straw. The pearls (which are complimentary) were great, super chewy and had a consistent texture, there wasn't any hardness or clumping that I sometimes see with slushes. The person who took my order was pleasant, and the atmosphere is very casual. I was torn between a few of the fruit ones and my go-to taro. I decided to stick to my go-to and got a large taro bubble tea with lychee pearls. I'm not a fan of regular boba pearls, so I always think it's a plus when bubble tea shops carry different pearl options. I sat at a table and pulled out my laptop to answer some emails while waiting for my bubble tea. Not even 5 minutes later, the lovely lady who took my order brought out my bubble tea for me. This is definitely one of the better bubble teas I've had in my day. It tasted fresh, wasn't too sweet, and the lychee pearls were delicious. If this spot wasn't so far away from me, I'd come here all the time. Seems like this is a popular spot for the after school/after work crowd because after I ordered, it got packed in here. The staff didn't ask about the sugar and ice levels (which I didn't expect to as they are a local shop as to the chain stores that have it written out for customers) so I was expecting the drink to be sweet but it was not sweet at all. The tea did have a strong Jasmine flavour but it wasn't the sweet milk tea that I was expecting. As well, the grass jelly is not smooth but rather chunky so it requires biting as opposed to just slurping compared to the grass jelly that they have at Chatime. I know a lot of people who stop by here for their great local prices but I was definitely underwhelmed by the drink I got. If this still seems like a lot to you, don't worry because they also offer weekly specials at $3 for a small and $3.74 for large. It really can't get any better than that. Since we came after work, Grayson wanted to have a snack so he got the curry fishballs for $2.99. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by these because they were the good kind of curry fish ball. By that I mean that they were "bouncy" in texture and had a bite to them. You could really taste fish instead of just flour and fillers. The not so good part was the sauce. This place was packed with customers!! It's not a bad shop but I honestly have had better boba elsewhere. Came here out of curiosity based on the Yelp reviews. Menu is extensive and lots of different combinations really. But the test for me is the quality of the boba itself. It tasted fresh but very natural tasting. It doesn't appear to be made with sugar or honey so I wasn't too crazy about it. I ordered a strawberry lemon drink (made with fresh fruit). It was more like a fruity slush. But only problem is when the drink is that cold, your boba hardens (which I personally don't prefer). Also ordered a mango cheesecake flavor which was okay. I probably won't come back even though I love the restaurants in the area. First of all, their prices are very reasonable and they have two sizes for you to choose from. The small ($3.50 - 500 ml) is the perfect size while the large ($5.00 -750ml) is good for sharing. These prices are incredibly reasonable because they actually do use real fruit and they blend it very well, producing a refreshing and thirst quenching slush. I had requested for half sweet, and it was just perfect! Anyways, they have a plethora of different fruit combinations and you can actually create your own if you want. I came at 10:30pm so there weren't too many people but I heard that they get really packed on weekend afternoons. PS. Their pearls are perfectly cooked! Super soft and chewy. read more

Clearly, I should have done the smart thing and got two drinks...but that might have been slightly excessive. Milk & Sugar Café is your typical BBT hangout with paper specials plastered on the walls and TV's showing sport highlights to help entertain you/ignore your friends, while you wait for your bubble tea to be made fresh. It'll take a few minutes but you can hear and see them making everything, which is awesome. Look at all the fresh fruit combinations. Holy crap, so many tasty options and price is very reasonable ($4.25 large and $3.50 small for fresh fruit). Next time I'll have to try their papaya passionfruit. They all sound so good. - Mango avocado ($4.25 for a large) - I don't know why I've never had this combo before but it's delicious. You get that creamy avocado texture mixed with the sweetness of the mango. YUM. Haven't had an avocado bubble tea this good since Hawaii. - Fresh durian ($5.25 for a large) - beware of smell, it is potent. My one friend couldn't handle it and was having a meltdown from the odor. Sure, it's smelly but it actually has a pretty interesting taste. Worth a try if you've never had it. Once you pop open the lid, it just oozes durian. - Green tea cheesecake ($2.00 small + $0.50 for sago) - small is pretty reasonably sized (you can upgrade to a large for $1.00). Seriously though, you can't go wrong with a bubble tea for less than $3.00! I had a taste and the cheesecake flavour is prominent. We were guessing that they added a scoop of cheesecake ice cream to make it more creamy. All in all, I really liked Milk & Sugar Café. If I lived in town, this would definitely be a spot I'd frequent often. I've only ordered from here through Door Dash, but it's our family's go-to dessert indulgence when we want a special takeout treat. The "cheesecake" drinks are rich and creamy and pair well with the yogurt popping pearls (little dessert roe of delight, as I like to think of them, that burst in your mouth when they literally pop). As well its not a great place to meet up with friends inside the bubble tea place. The bubble tea shaker makes a lot of noise. I think its because the sound proofing isn't that great in the bubble tea place. Can give you a headach if you stay too long inside listening the rumble of the bubble tea shaker. I like the fact that you can create your own drink. I had the lychee passion fruit with coconut jelly. Bubbles and coconut jelly are free. This is a plus at my end because I love coconut jelly. I placed my order over the phone to minimize my wait time in the store, ordered a strawberry blueberry vanilla with small pearls/tapioca and a red bean vanilla with pearls. The lady kept repeating strawberry banana with rainbow jelly and red bean banana Im not sure if she has challenges hearing, but when I got to the store to pick up my order, I overheard her getting numerous customers orders wrong, and she kept repeating the wrong orders. Not sure if she's a regular worker there, but she should look for work elsewhere if she can't get customer orders right.
