Tried to schedule a mani-pedi at my regular downtown location this weekend, but was told the only store with availability was Lamar. I didn't even know they had a location there! When I arrived, it was located in a chic little enclave on S. Lamar with St. Philip Pizza and Stouthous Coffee. The pros: -Lots of free, close parking -Products include Kobo candles, Kevin Murphy, SpaRitual, and milk + honey (house brand) -Complimentary mimosas -Private nail area that is much better designed and appointed than the Arboretum location The cons: -The lady at the front desk was overly pretentious. I know they usually are at places like this, but this one was verging on rude -This doesn't apply to this location alone, but my total for a mani-pedi (with a standard tip) is more than $100. The service is impeccable, but I just don't think it feels lengthy or luxurious enough to merit being more than double the cost of my weekly place -Massages (both hand and feet) are always seriously lacking *Note that this location is labeled as "salon+nails+esthetics" so it does not have "spa" treatments like the Downtown and Galleria locations. read more

I have gone to this salon twice now and have had a really great experience each time! This past visit I went in without knowing what kind of haircut I really wanted and consulted Taylor to help me decide. Sometimes hair stylists get annoyed when you do that but Taylor was really excited and helpful. She helped me choose a style that works with my face shape and that even fit my personality more. She was genuinely thrilled that I was going to go for it and chop off about 4-5 inches just to try it out. I love what she came up with and I feel like I'm rocking it! She taught me how to style it to get the same salon effect that she created and I am happy to say that it was user friendly and I have executed the same style. Highly recommend Taylor! It is SO overpriced and you can get a better pedicure at a normal salon for half the price. She was so gentle I barely feel her doing anything, and she left my cuticles a disaster. Ok so this was my first facial...EVER (and I love beauty shit)- but for some reason always though facials were a waste of money and all it was was rubbing lotion on your face but I was so wrong. Jennifer was my Esthetician and did SUCH a good and thorough job. Talked me through what she was doing, extracted all of my blackheads (gross, but ya need to know), and told me a bit about her background and I was like "whoa, this chick is LEGIT." She was really awesome in general and didn't make me feel like I had to act all "spa-like" just because I was getting a facial. loved that. The room itself is really warm and lavender scented, the bathrobe dress thing and sheet are SUPER soft and I dunno- the whole thing just felt super luxurious. After my face looked a bit red (from the extracting) but SO DEWY. I actually ended up buying all the products she recommended because she just made a solid case for them in a non-pushy way. And I'm always the girl being like "not buying anything. too poor. BYE" So that's sayin' something. Treat yo'self. read more

This company maintains a policy that discriminates against families with children. They say that no child under 16 can be in the waiting room alone. They maintain the false pretext that this is based on safety. That part is what bothers me the most. At least acknowledge the real reasons you are doing it. I had a last minute scheduling issue that led to me bringing my son with me to my appointment. He is perfectly content to sit quietly with a device and is very well behaved. I was told they could not serve me because of him and it was both disappointing and embarrassing. I will not go there again. They are overpriced as well. read more

I never write reviews, but I don't want anyone to go through the same thing I did. I came in here after reading such good reviews for a last minute haircut. I explicitly said that I wanted my hair about collarbone length with a few very long layers and no face framing/short layers right near my face. I came home with exactly the opposite of what I asked for. My hair is above my shoulders and I basically have "The Rachel" haircut. I cried for hours and am devastated at how long this will take to grow out and look normal again. While everyone was incredibly kind and the salon itself was beautiful, I still cannot believe that I paid so much to go through six months of growing out this awful cut. read more

Jen Kerr at Milk and Honey on South Lamar is a rock star hair cutter. She is good at what she does. She knows what you want and is also fast. She is an expert at cutting and color. She has taught at Paul Mitchell and I was so impressed with the way she offers instructions to her assistant on what she was doing so the assistant could learn. She's a great teacher, as well. My husband bought me a M+H gift certificate for our anniversary and I decided to use it for a luxurious pedicure before a vacation. My goal was to use the whole gift card because this is not a place I go. I have a regular esthetician that he did not know about. So I booked the "ultimate pedicure" (their most expensive pedicure) with gel polish since we were going to the beach. I find that gel polish lasts better when your feet are in the sand. I went in on a Monday afternoon and the salon was nearly empty. It was really quiet because their sound system was broken, but I did not mind. This was just as COVID-19 was starting to dominate the news so it was a welcome break. Needless-to-say our vacation was cancelled. My pedicure was supposed to 80 minutes plus a little extra time since gel polish takes longer to cure. It definitely did not take the full time and that's not because the nail tech skipped parts. Overall the pedicure was nice. As many others have said in their reviews, the seats are really uncomfortable and the cushions are a slippery material so I kept sliding forward. My only true complaint or piece of feedback is that this was definitely not worth the price. I would have had just as nice an experience at a walk in salon (albeit maybe not as quiet) and it would have been 1/3 the price. I would not come back here for a pedicure. read more

I love this salon so much! I'm always greeted so sweetly and am offered a beverage while I browse the fun retail space up front. I've been to several stylists at the South Lamar location and have never been disappointed. My most recent haircut was with ALLEY and she did a fantastic job! very disappointed, have been going blonde for over 6 years and came out with orange hair...not even any highlighting, just a bulk of orange...I have been to many different salons due to moves and never had any problem like this, extremely disappointed and a huge waste of a large sum of money - I see other similar reviews having used the same person, I really enjoyed that person's personality and don't want to call out names but I wish I had seen the reviews before going, and I wish M&H was more helpful in remedying this - I waited longer than 2 weeks to contact them because I only wash my hair once a week and was hoping with washes it would improve, and they gave me a $40 credit - that is nothing compared to the amount I wasted. read more

Milk and Honey was an all around fantastic experience for me. After getting a gift certificate from my boyfriend I checked out their website and decided to schedule with Taylor. I came in wanting low maintenance color and a long layered cut. Taylor is down to earth, friendly and very good at what she does. With her guidance I chose to try a coloring technique called balayage, which is a gradual transition from dark roots to light tips with natural looking blending highlights throughout. I am absolutely thrilled with my results. My color is beautiful and natural looking and my cut left my hair feeling soft and manageable, even after bring lightened. I liked the natural smell to all of the products and the clean vibe in the salon. I was treated pleasantly and offered beverages multiple times while I was there. I loved M+H. Ten years ago, my now-husband dropped me off at their downtown location for a spa day for my birthday and it was amazing. Every chance I got, and when I had the funds to do so, I would go for facials, massages, nails, cuts, color, candles, shampoo, whatever. I was so happy that the south location opened and after lots of prior salon hopping for hair cuts and color, I thought I found my salon ride or die. Sydney was amazing and I was so sad when she left for NYC. Morgan did an amazing job cutting and coloring after Sydney left. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, all the love went away. I had a long standing appointment for a root touch up. Just a couple hours before, my husband was called into his office for an emergency and as a result, I had to bring my almost 6yo with me to the salon. Honestly, I didn't think it would be a problem. The kid could sit in a chair playing Angry Birds and not move an inch for days. I knew he would be in my line of sight the entire time and far away from anyone getting their hair cut or receiving any other service. Plus, the Lamar location is definitely more chill than the other locations and I had seen kids at the downtown location before. You know what they say about hindsight...I guess I should have known better than to bring him. Here's what happened -- I walked up to the front desk, pointed to my son and said, "I hope it's ok that I brought a guest." I got a 1/2 smile from the "concierge" and she checked me in. Several minutes later, much to my surprise, and after some whispering between a stylist, the "concierge" and the "concierge" disappearing to the back room, another woman comes and sits down next to me and asks me in rapid fire, without giving me a moment to answer OR explaining the no kids policy, "Do you have someone to pick him up? Is there someone coming to watch him? Can we reschedule your appointment?". I was so overwhelmed and embarrassed, that I didn't know what to do. I asked her why. Her response wasn't to tell me that they have a policy against kids in the salon, instead she said, "we have shears and that could be dangerous". Um, WTF?!? My child, who had not moved more that 3" in the 10+ minutes we had been there or looked up from Angry Birds once, was not going to run around grabbing shears from stylists (which they leave in drawers when not in use, btw). IMPORTANT TO NOTE: It's not the policy I am mad about. Had the "concierge" said to me, AFTER I ASKED (which, I had), "for the safety of the children and so our guests can relax, we have a no child policy," I probably would not have broken down in tears in front of my stylist -- yep, that happened too -- and would have rescheduled or had my husband leave his office to pick my son up (which is ultimately how we resolved the kid issue). Instead, I sat in the chair in silence, fighting back the tears, knowing this would be the last time I would set foot in M+H. After I was done, I went to my car, shed more tears, took a deep breath and tried to move on. I responded to the post-appointment survey with what had happened, hoping that this would be a great learning experience for their staff. A couple of days later, I got a perfunctory response from the manager stating that they will "be following up with her (the concierge) on how to best handle that conversation" and then proceeding to point out that not all children behave. Needless to say, reading that didn't help. After being a customer for so long, I was saddened by the lack of empathy. Fast forward to today. I didn't plan on writing a review, but as I was scouring Yelp for a new salon, M+H popped up my list. After reading comments about lackluster customer service, I had to write about my experience. I want to be constructive, not just mad. Here's my suggestion for whoever reads this on how to deal with stressed out mamas, who often forego self care to be a mom -- 1) instead of sending a cold email, pick up the phone and ask how you could do better. 2) Be upfront, but pleasant, with clients when they bring their child, and do so before they sit down. They probably don't know about the policy and rapid fire questions about how you're going to fix the problem (aka, relocate the child or leave) do nothing more than embarrass the client and make the situation worse. 3) Talk to employees who are parents about ways others can address moms/dads and how to be empathetic to people who are trying to juggle haircuts and parenthood. 4) Let your employees know that an apology goes a long way. The woman who told me that my son had to leave avoided me like the plague for the hour-plus I was there. Had she come up to me and apologized -- it was more than obvious that I was upset -- it would have gone a long way and I wouldn't be on the hunt for a new salon. Sadly, that didn't happen. Went in for a partial highlight-I was really excited and rarely get my hair done, but this experience wasn't what I was hoping. I felt the stylist didn't listen to what I wanted and was disinterested. I didn't get a blow out, but figured they would blow dry most of my hair before I left. She dried the right front few strands, leaving the rest sopping wet and I left without knowing what my hair looked like. The end result when I dried it myself was okay-I don't Love the color but hoping it blends with washes. I won't be coming back. read more

As usual everyone is friendly, from the concierge to the stylist, it's always an amazing experience and I never leave without being absolutely in love with my hair. I went in for just a haircut this time, my stylist was Irene and she advised me and helped me find the perfect haircut for my curly hair and gave me a lot of good tips on how to style it. My first experience at Milk + Honey at South Lamar was a great experience: A couple of years ago, I had a terrible ombré that another salon had done and Katy was able to fix it with no problem. She introduced me to the perfect balayage treatment for my hair and within an hour, my hair looked normal again. This girl has skills! I continued to go to Katy for roughly the next year and 1/2. Unfortunately, Katy is no longer there A few weeks ago, I had booked a gel mani/pedi package with Marisela. The work she did was excellent but her social skills are seriously lacking. I tried my best to carry on a conversation with her while she worked but she was not interested in talking, AT ALL. How awkward... My package cost $150 and I left a tip. I probably shouldn't have even done that after the uncomfortable 2 hours I spent getting my nails done. Excellent, clean, salon but I recommend carefully reading reviews before you decide who to book with. read more

I have been to this salon (South Lamar location) a few times before COVID hit and only had great experiences. Then I scheduled with a new stylist, Amy. I asked for shoulder length hair cut and maybe I would go shorter from there if I decided to. She cut my hair at jaw length, almost 3 inches shorter than I wanted it. I have very bad vision and did not notice how short she was cutting my hair until a large chunk fell on my lap. At that point, it was too late to say anything. She also barely spoke to me and acted as if she was annoyed the entire time. It makes me so sad to post this, but I will not be returning to this salon. The moment you cannot stand your the bad haircut you received a couple of months ago and trying to grow out... you look up the salon you've passed often to see what other people think of it and BOOM, you're interested.
