Let me first say that I seldom write reviews but because the service was just poor, I felt compelled to do so. When George is on, usually at night when we frequent this diner, everyone is spot on and in great spirits, in addition to everything being efficient. Today was not the case. Maybe it was due to it being a Sunday and very little patrons were here, but I would recommend that employees learn customer service etiquette as opposed to sitting around and treating this diner as a social club. My reasons for the ONE STAR are below: 1.) When handling food, one should not have servers work if they're sick. There's nothing worse than a waitress sneezing, wiping their nose and coughing into their hands and then serving you a plate of food with a thumb inside. 2.) There's no need for patrons to hear about what's going on with other diners owned by this specific owner or what internal problems there are. 3.) Walking into the kitchen and yelling isn't really good management and again, patrons don't need to hear that. 4.) When paying, no smile or thank you, just grab the card, don't ask if we'd like to leave a tip and just sign and go. RUDE! RUDE! RUDE! As a business owner, I understand the value of customer service and these employees should know that there paycheck comes from the patrons whom they serve and with numerous diners in Danbury, people have choices. Needless to say, we usually come here once or twice per week at night but because of today, we have no intentions of coming back. Been here twice in 2 years. Food is eh, nothing to rave about. Its lower than your typical diner quality of food. Once for lunch and breakfast. Service was fast but that's about the best thing I can say. Wouldn't frequent again. read more

Tried it for the first time. Quickly seated at the counter that only had one other patron seated , waitress took a bit to come over but got the order correct, and out from the kitchen really fast. I had to ask for additional condiments, which she quickly retrieved. I do have 2 "issues": 1-she never checked on me that everything was ok. I was a waitress, this is a major pet peeve of mine. Once I finished, I was waiting quite a while before she came over, and she wasn't really busy. Asked if I wanted anything else, I replied, "Just the check, please." and wished her a happy afternoon. I normally tip generously, 20% MINIMUM-she got barely a $1. 2-Once I got my bill in hand, I checked out at the register, where an older man was working. Not great..... Its dated and old inside.... this is prob why the food is on the cheaper side for a diner.... The food is not that great.... the burgers are ehhhh - definitely a frozen patty on a not so good roll.... The food here is excellent, the prices are very reasonable, and the service was great! We ordered the Florentine Eggs Benedict and stack of 3 pancakes (the real Vermont maple syrup is a little extra, but definitely worth it), both of which were delicious and sizable portions. They usually have a wait on the weekends around breakfast / brunch time, but it's a large establishment, so long lines only amount to ~10-15 minute waits. It's a diner, so they're specialty is breakfast food, which I would definitely go back for. read more

Wonderful food fast service we are from out of town staying at the Crown Plaza hotel we had free breakfast at the hotel. The food at the hotel was AWFUL so we went looking for a good breakfast. The Windmill Diner was just what we were looking for great place to eat. read more

As far as diners go, this was very run of the mill. Large diner menu....food was generally good. Loved the curly fries....service was OK...were there with my kids and put the kids order in first, but both our meal and the kids came out at the same time. Would probably be back. read more

Food was OK: beef gyro with fries and cole slaw. Both boys had spaghetti and relished it. Service was weak, even though they were not busy. The waitress was pleasant, patient, and smiled, but repeatedly forgot to bring things: silverware, grated parmesan, milk that was requested with tea, etc. Accommodating about special requests for the boys. Fries were served good and hot! Salad was merely iceberg with a couple grape tomatoes and cucumber slices. Plenty of staff on hand but they tended to cluster in small groups or sit in booths chatting--I think it may have been a shift change so those going off were getting their lunches--but the impression was of a few hustlers trying to keep up. read more

First time in since the remodel, menu and management changes. We were warmly greeted by both the owner and our waitress. The coffee was hot and fresh and was "Diner-delicious" - although we would have appreciated more frequent refills- they were very scarce. Hubby ordered tuna melt and I ordered a pastrami Ruben - no fries. Imagine my surprise when I was told the kitchen staff would ignore the note on the fries and that they would come on the plate anyway! (WTH?!!) so I asked the waitress to be sure the fries were extra well done, then, as I'd probably wind up eating some - hubby asked for the same. The plates arrived - mine piled high with cold, pale, soggy fries and half a portion of the same on hubby's. When waitress asked how everything was I mentioned the fries and she offered to get new ones but asked if she should even bother since I said I didn't want them to begin with. We opted out of new fries. All that said- the tuna melt was good. The pastrami Ruben also good (although the pastrami was fatty (lucky for me I prefer it that way) but it was sliced like more like thick slab bacon and could have benefitted from a thinner cut. The grilled marble rye and house-made coleslaw were both outstanding. I only wish the owner would have done more than just roll his eyes and shake his head when we mentioned our experience to him at the register. A simple "I'm sorry" or small deduction for the fries would have gone a long way. He was obviously upset with his staff but sadly never apologized for them or encouraged us to return. read more

My family and I stayed at the hotel a couple doors down, we went here for breakfast and it was definitely packed but there was definitely room for the four of us! The waitress was very kind. The environment was calm and homey. The food was delicious, although they didn't seem to have a diverse menu. Let me first say that the chicken salad is the best ive ever had! Such good food, not your average diner. Owners are actually really nice, love the cook jimmy. Great service and i always feel at home when i go there. Top 5 things to get 1. Chicken salad club or wrap 2. Jalopeno poppers 3. Lobster salad 4. Mousakka 5. Brown rice and spinach side. Great place for breakfast ! Coffee was full bodied and hot. Service was very quick, pleasant server and orders were accurate. We went for breakfast after Christmas and despite the crowded restaurant , food was delicious ! Pancakes were delicious , my husband had the cheese blitzes which were crispy, warm and good cheese filling they came with a good amount of sour cream and applesauce. Both children's toast orders were a little overdone but the eggs were made well. The hash browns were a little bland but were crispy and not greasy. Overall a good place to eat! read more

First off, I'd like to say that I have been to Windmill countless times and I always know I'll be back. I've never had a bad experience. I know from talking to the wait staff that this is the longest family run diner in Danbury. I would also like to say it's the best that Danbury has to offer. It is conveniently located off I-84 with easy on/easy off access. The food is above average for a diner, with exceptional dinner specials and homemade soups. Try the signature cheesecake! It's to die for! The wait staff is always welcoming and the management cares about the customers. Prices are great, food is great, and atmosphere is inviting! The diner I patronize when I'm in the Mill Plain area of Danbury, CT. Lobster salad (yes real lobster) on white toast with lettuce and fries(well done) with a side of gravy is my favorite item to order. Service is always quick and friendly. Only one bad experience here. On one recent visit I ordered the fried chicken dinner and it was obviously prepared and frozen a head of time then reheated. The middle of the chicken was ice cold. I ended up eating about a 1/4 having it wrapped and reheated at home. read more

Went in for a late lunch with my 2 children. When I ordered mac n cheese for my child the waitress informed me they don't serve it on the day we were there. Excuse me? T.M., you should re-evaluate your comments, I can see they are pretty outdated. This restaurant is one of the cleanest, most welcoming, family run restaurants in the danbury area. Where else can you get a big, tasty, full dinner, made with fresh ingredients, with bread, a vegetable, and soup or salad, for about $12-$13? As opposed to chain restaurants, the food here is not microwaved to order, it is prepared fresh daily. The staff is well trained and attentive, and the owners (one of whom is Always in the front greeting and seating guests) are caring and very flexible to people's wishes and orders. Definitely a must if you are in the area..... PS- the only reason people order soda without ice is to sneak their way into an ounce or two more of it...They should pay those extra 5 cents for trying to be tricky.... read more

Overall good diner experience for breakfast. The food comes out fast and the coffee is one of the better cups around. The refills can tend to be slow but only because the staff is busy running around. The only bad note I can say is the bathrooms aren't the greatest but I'm usually not there long enough to care. read more

Terrible customer service and not child friendly at all!! Arrived asking for a table for 6 with a high chair. The man walking us to a table grumbled and said things like "high chairs take up too much room". We weren't even greated in any sort of a nice manner by him or the waitstaff, just a "what do you want". My daughter was antsy toward the end of breakfast so my mother-in-law took her for a walk towards the bathroom. She was then scolded like she was a child by an older waitress saying "This isn't your house or your living room!!" And the waitress followed her back to our table by to continue harassing her. The waitress would not drop the issue or leave us alone until we left the restaurant. All other waitstaff just stood there staring at us. One even stopped sweeping to just watch us being harassed. Not one nice person working in that building. Customer service is nonexistent unless you are a 70year old man who eats there every Sunday. Went in expecting the diner experience - usual fare, ample portions, quickly served, in and out. Food took 20 minutes, and both meals were really lousy. Portions were small, everything was over cooked. Stuffed flounder was dry and burned on the bottom. Prime rib was grey and dry as sawdust to the point of being inedible. Baked potato was hard and flavorless. On exit, the manager asked how our meals were (our server never asked), and I was honest. He asked what I had, and then he walked away. We have been stopping at the Mill Plain Diner twice a year as we travel through Danbury. They have just recently finished remodeling and the place looks fabulous! More open, better lighting and more modern. The food is awesome and the prices you cannot beat. We've tried several things from the menu and have never been disappointed. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. We never leave hungry or disappointed. In fact, we always leave with leftovers and enjoy our meal a second time the following evening. read more

I should have written this 3 weeks ago when I went but vacation got in the way. That being said I still thought it worth the late post as I feel compelled to warn others. Let me just say, rarely do I let a french fry go to waste. I let not only my french fries get thrown out, but my whole meal. The eggs benedict was tasteless, just like the fries-how is that even possible? My husband's meal had the same issue. One would think that the server might ask when clearing and seeing full plates if all was ok. Especially after I had to send back my hard boiled eggs the first time to get proper poached, no "sorry" on that either. She just grabbed my plate and came back too long later with proper eggs but cold everything else on the plate. I would have complained at the time but the lack of interest by the staff made me feel like I'd be wasting my time. No one asked how it was when we paid the bill....I would have told him but at least I can warn now. Go to Wooster Cafe on 7, hands down a much better experience with caring staff. read more

My husband and I eat out at least once a week, and we love diners. I was a diner waitress for many years. That being said, most diners we go to offer quick, efficient service and pretty decent food. I am very fair and a very patient person, and I will praise a restaurant with great reviews if they are great. NOT THIS PLACE. Where do I start? We walked in at 3 pm on a Saturday, place is practically empty. A man and a woman both picked up menus and showed us to the same table. They laughed, saying they were fighting over us. That's where the efficiency ended, sorry to say. Our waitress came over and announces that they just had a big rush and she needs time to catch her breath. She puts her order pad down on the table and says WOOO! and mops her brow. Says she's sweating to death. Not a good impression so far. I ordered the mesclun greens salad, which comes with grilled chicken. I asked her what dressings they have. She hesitates, says "salad dressings? Let me see..." says she would eat it with a raspberry vinegrette or a balsamic. She clearly doesn't know all the dressings they offer. I tell her I will have balsamic vinaigrette. I ask her what soups they have. She tells us, my grandson says he will have he chicken orzo soup and a grilled cheese. My husband orders a BLT with butter, onion, no mayo, lightly toasted on rye. Waitress says "what kind of bread do you want it on?" My husband says " um, rye". She says "do you want it toasted?" He looks at me and then says "yes, lightly toasted". The waitress then reads the order back to him to make sure she has it correct. She then disappears. We are waiting a very long time for our food and realize 50 minutes have passed. It does not take that long to make that food. I started glancing around for our waitress and the guy up front (I am thinking he was a manager?) noticed and went in the kitchen and out comes the waitress. She comes over all flustered and rattles off something about how she put the order in wrong and they made the BLT wrong so they had to do it again. She goes in the kitchen and comes out with my grandson's soup. More waiting. She then comes out with the grilled cheese, my husband's sandwich and a dish of raspberry vinaigrette for me. No salad. I tell her that I ordered the balsamic vinaigrette. She says " oh yeah, that's right". My salad doesn't come right out and I am waiting. She finally comes out with my salad and proper dressing. My husband's sandwich is not lightly toasted, it is almost burnt, and the tomatoes in my salad taste off. The waitress comes over and gives me a refill on my diet coke even though I still have half a glass left. She's all rushing and flustered. I thought that was nice of her to bring it until she brought us the bill and I saw that they CHARGE FOR REFILLS. That was a sneaky thing to do to just bring over a refill without even asking if we want a refill and then have the audacity to charge for it! I checked the bill and see that she charged me $3.50 for chicken on my salad, when the salad COMES WITH CHICKEN! I went up to the manager, showed him the menu and told him I was charged for chicken that already was included in the price of the salad. He was very nice about it and removed the charge. On the receipt is a section for the customer to check off if the food was excellent, good or poor and if the service was excellent, good or poor. I marked the food good but marked the service as poor. When you are a waitress, it is your responsibility to know your menu, know what dressings you have, what the soups and vegetables of the day are and what comes on a dish (example, the mesclun salad comes with grilled chicken on top for $10.95.) ALSO - she asked me what size salad I wanted and I said small - and then she charged me for a large and added the chicken. You need to be able to turn your tables over quickly in a diner and you need to check on your customers and their food, especially if they are waiting a long time and it is obvious that they are not happy about it. Our waitress was nowhere to be seen while we waited for our food to come out. Even if it was something out of her control, she still should have come over and apologized about the wait. I used to go here when I was a little kid after church and it used to be great. This diner however has been on a downward slope. The ownership/management is terrible, the staff is rude. And they don't make poached eggs after 11 am?! Thats a diner staple. I ordered them at 10:50 and the waitress was incredibly rude saying that she can't promise I'll get them because they kitchen already started breaking down the equipment to make them. If it says until 11 it should be until 11 ..even though thats ridiuclous anyways. I also overheard the owner telling a story to a customer about how she asked patrons who were angry and upset about their experience there to pay an $5-$10 fee for making the waitress cry... My wife & I were in town for a wedding this weekend & decided to stop at The Windmill for dinner. One of the poorest meals that I ever have paid for (we are empty nesters & dine out very frequently, I am a career food service professional - this is a very strong statement coming from me). I had the chicken parm - truly awful. Chicken was 2 4 oz boneless breast that were not pounded into cutlets, just battered & deep fried - tough & overdone, served over overcooked pasta with a sickeningly sweet red sauce. Nothing had any seasoning. Had the NE clam chowder - equally disappointing - thin with a broken stock and totally lacking seasoning. Wife 's BLT was equally disappointing - cheap thin flavorless bacon, under ripe tomatoes on burned toast, served with undercooked French fries. If an establishment could receive a review of zero stars this is one that would receive it. Avoid the Windmill at all costs. read more
