These guys are the quintessential diner and I was so happy to find them when I was walking around town looking for coffee. What I have observed is patrons coming inside, the owners knowing their names and their regular orders. Like I'm the movies! It feels so warm and comfortable! It's old school and we all need much more of this in our lives. They were hurting during the 2 years of street repairs and then 2 years of Covid. I just went into MVCS. Did take out for my wife and I and our 2.5 and 1yo kids. I'm from nj and would like to think that I know diner's pretty damn well as we have some Of the best breakfast joints in the US. That being said, this food was incredibly good. They're open for COVID-19 and Napa fires. Covid hours are every day from 7am to 2pm. First time here for breakfast and the food was delicious! If you are looking for good cooked sunny side up eggs, corned beef hash and pancakes, this is the place to go. A mom and pa restaurant. Lorraine was very nice and attentive. Very disappointing in many areas, but first, the good thing about this place... Nothing!! Once we entered, I had the impression it may be a good choice due to the fact most customers where "mature" in age. That premonition changed very quickly once seated. Our waitress (the only one on duty) made several critical errors. The main issue was her lack of sanitation. WAITRESS went outside of the restaurant a on three occasions to pet a dog of a homeless person loitering near the entrance, then NOT WASHING HANDS BEFORE RETURNING TO SERVE CUSTOMERS!!! Never asked if we needed anything or inquired if we where enjoying our meal. Waiteress spent more time setting and chatting with customer friends. The quality of food was poor, the price for a platter is staggering. I paid $ 17 dollars for 2 eggs, bacon and two pancakes. Hash browns or potatoes nor toast where included in price. Bus boy used same towel the clean chairs and eating surface. Bus boy also touched the eating part of spoon, fork and knife while setting the table. Never did I witness busboy handling the utensils with the handles. No employee wore gloves. Owner and or cook came from kitchen and used a dining room chair as a ladder to adjust a window sign but never had the chair cleaned before allow customers to be seated. Place is gross!!! The food is mediocre diner food for 2x what you could find at other hole in the wall diners. The bacon was burned to a crisp and the hash browns barely better than frozen grocery store kind. The waffles are not fluffy but thin and crisp. $60 breakfast for 3 people. This is just blocks away from our house so I was hoping for more. We took our almost 3 year old out for breakfast. We were relishing in how well behaved he was - coloring and excited to talk about the pictures on the wall (trains!) and buses outside - and enjoying our rare family time. The woman came over to deliver our food and said "maybe he could use his inside voices now." We were stunned. There were people at the bar but only one other table seated in the restaurant. There had been no tantrums. No outbursts. No yelling. There was only pure joy and excitement, and we were proud of his behavior. The happiness and giggles of a child should be contagious and encouraged. I am sad that a place that would want that squashed is in this community. When I approached her about her comment she tried to judge our parenting and told me that she tells people with autism to behave. I really want to like this place and I feel bad writing a bad review about them because I don't know what was going on the day we went in...actually the second time we've been in. It is not pleasant to be stared at by the kitchen staff like they want to chop you up with an ax because you asked for grapefruit instead of meat. And um, guys, its CHEAPER for you to just give me my goddamn grapefruit, mkay? The waitress was really nice, and I felt bad for her. She had to confer with some guy that acted like the manager, but from the previous reviews I would be really surprised if this was the same guy. He was surly and rude and literally sat across from us and stared us down for the entire uncomfortable 20 minutes we ate. I felt really uncomfortable eating what came out of the kitchen with the looks we got, and we were completely polite with our requests, just confused about why we were feeling so unwelcome in a nearly-empty diner on a Saturday morning. It's a TRUE old classic coffee shop! I been there mulpt of times I was there as well my folks too! I been there for YEARS when I was travel w/my folks when I was living in Queens NYC, Pasic NJ, Franklin OH, later moved to Mill Valley Marin CA (by my self) and Now as a vistor to CA and later moved to Pembroke Pines Broward FL. This place is small and parking also. The service is good but not at lunch time its a mad house REALLY! They colse early at 3pm Sun though Thurs excipt Fri they serve dinner unitl 8pm! Sat they colse at 3 pm! I met the owner and he is supper friendly and few his staff as well! Its NOT like McDonals fast food at all! The place had beeb remodel few times and the color is ok. The rest room is REALLY old fashion and very tight to go in! WARNING: Please note they do have a VERY old credit card slot system when they charger you and when in used. sometimes punch holes in the credit card and do damaged to it***! They don't excipt money orders or travels cheecks at all! Be on the save side carry cash on you or used your credit card***! The head cook and owner always has a charming smile and hearty hello to those that come in regularly, which is most of the customers. I would put the Mill Valley Coffee Shop in the lower end of the "Greasy Spoon" category. The Coffee: I'm surprised that the previous reviewer thinks this place is an actual coffee house because the coffee is "brewed" by a standard issue commercial grade coffee maker. There are no whole beans in sight, no roasting is getting done on site, let alone any sort of bean variety or roasts to choose from, just some prepackaged pre ground coffee sittin' in one of the three carafes. And the coffee was nothing to speak of, just plain old coffee. The Food: Well I wish we hadn't sat at the counter, watching the cook retrieve my frozen biscuits from the freezer and pop them in the microwave just killed my biscuits and gravy breakfast. Which by the way is a breakfast benchmark for any reputable greasy spoon. Overall the food shouldn't make you sick, but definitely won't bring you (us) back. Final Thoughts: This place is not a coffee house, don't go if you want a quality cup of coffee or any other coffee related drinks. The People Phil is the owner and cook and he and his wife Lorraine extend warm hospitality to regulars and newbies alike. The Food OK foodies...Mill Valley Coffee House is exactly that -- a coffee house. Good old fashioned brewed coffee. The BLT has more bacon and less lettuce than most...the hash browns aren't some new age roasted anything -- good old fashioned shredded hash browns. Breakfast is king here but the burgers at lunch are worth another trip after you grab breakfast. 3. The Atmosphere I've read some of the reviews that say "funky." Well....it is a diner environment without the glitz or "faux diner" feel of more modern replicas. Picture your grandmother's kitchen crossed with the old fashioned diner -- with a dining area big enough to seat a modest crowd. I've never had to wait for a table...but chances are there are only a couple left when you arrive and when you leave. It is Mill Valley's hidden little secret where most of the locals grab coffee...breakfast and read the paper before going off to work. 4. The Value OK - -let's face it -- with the economy breakfast is the perfect meal to still enjoy a meal out without the huge expense of dinner. (Just moved to MV from SF....sigh I do miss those brunch spots...but not the parking hell and traffic ) And don't expect the stellar, long line out the door type of joint from this shop. This is a no frills, you order and you get your food type spot! Good for some, not good for others. Ordered - Lox Omelette + Chicken Fried Steak. My first impression --the waitress is nice and this place is kinda charming. And they have a lot of business. But, my eggs were soggy and tasted mushy. And, I knew they weren't going to taste good, before I even took a bite. The ham on my plate didn't taste good either. In sum, nothing on my plate looked or tasted appealing. The coffee isn't excellent, and the place is funky, but the food is usually very tasty. The hash browns are always done right. The Organic Sausage Scramble is a must have. The Mill Valley Coffee Shop is a historic landmark that resides on the corner of Miller Ave and Locust Ave. I have been eating here for 25 years. I agree with coffee comment Vince M. made, but the rest of his opinions from my experiences are some what misleading. I would be interested in learning more about Eve O's first expereince since she only commented on her second. The first experience must have been adequate as you returned for a second time. From my perspective, for what its worth.... The owner Phil and his wife Lorain are two of the friendliest and welcoming small business owners. The staff are extremely attentive as they fill your drink cups often and clear your plates quickly. My all time favorite is the club house sandwich and fries. The sandwich is a triple decker toasted on any choice of bread and comes with turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato. I like to add avocado. The fries are always crispy and never greasy. When I am in the mood for a Benedict's style breakfast, I go with the Phil's special which includes grilled tomato and spinach on top of the Canadian bacon. read more

I love this place because its the only place I can get a waffle and eggs, sausage and bacon in the same breakfast. "The suburban" it's called and I have to go in for it at least once a week. All the staff are very kind, and the food is delicious, I've never eaten a bad meal there. The MVCS is a true hidden gem. They are always glad to see you, the coffee is always hot, and the Eggs Benedict are AMAZING! Perfectly soft poached eggs resting atop English muffins and a bed of ultra thin sliced ham, topped with a yummy Hollandaise sauce and served with a side of hash browns. For over a decade, everywhere I go for breakfast, I'm haunted by my memories of the MVCS and their perfect Eggs Benedict. None so far can compare. My best experiences elsewhere are merely ranges of disappointment in comparison. After an eight year hiatus, I stopped in for Saturday morning breakfast while vacationing in the Bay Area. Looking for a place to call Sunday morning breakfasts home we wandered into this iconic looking place. Yes, it is a relic from times past and if you are in the mood for old school diner food this is your place. My husband was impressed with the Eggs Florentine, the kids pancakes were out of the box batter, and my BLT wasn't bad. My only real complaint about this place is the prices. 3 entrees (the kids split one), no juice, and two cups of coffee came up to $48! (It was $13 for my BLT alone). I guess in the age of high operating costs these guys do what they need to do to stay alive, but I'm not sure I can justify the prices more than a few times a year.
