I am on a chicken wing tour of Ohio. This was our third stop on our adventure. We came for the wings. They are good. Just plain good. However from a chicken wing viewpoint the best way I can describe the wings is to say that they remind you of eating very good fried chicken. You're not getting the sauces in all of its glory. Just very crispy, juicy, perfectly fried piece of chicken that just happens to be a wing. The girl taking our order is very sweet, smiley and attentive. She made sure to come out to ask how everything was. From a chicken wing view point I would have given this joint 4/5 stars. But to give this place 4 stars would be an insult. They have some of the best fried chicken you're going to experience. Now if only they had a great sauce or two to add to the wing experience. Not a ton of mediocre sauces. Just one or two amazing sauces to compliment their amazing wings. read more

First, they close at 7pm on Saturdays. Thank you to the young lady who allowed us to eat quickly in the dining room while she swept so we didn't have to eat on the road. The chicken was no better than KFC. It was delicious but didn't match the hype. The fries were frozen not fresh. The makes mashed potatoes and gravy were good and my son loved the mac and cheese. The food was cheap, service was fast and they let us use the dining room for 10 minutes past closing. Great restaurant for the college crowd missing moms cooking. read more

"Two pounds of hearts!" -- Now that's not a phrase that you hear every day. But it's something that I heard on my recent visit to Miller's Chicken. And combined with the fact that nearly every other order called out to the waiting customers similarly contained hearts, gizzards, or livers, it was a sign that I may have ordered wrong. It wasn't just the absence of organs that made me question my meal choices however. It was also the fact that the things that I did order didn't live up to my (admittedly high) expectations. For purposes of understanding this review, it may help to know what those expectations were. For years I had heard tell of truly excellent fried chicken in Athens. On every trip, it's reputation lingered just out of reach, as I visited other locations in town. But not this time. This time I was determined to get some. And so, when the chicken I received was fine but not outstanding, you can see why I might be disappointed. The chicken skin/breading/exterior thighs and leg I ordered was tough in places and somewhat lacking in flavor. Some parts of the meat were hot and juicy, while others dry and stringy. The sides were ok. Best was the flavorful gravy over passable mashed potatoes. The coleslaw was ok, but did little to distinguish itself. On the other hand, the service was friendly and accommodating, and the price was right. If I lived in Athens I'd probably try out other menu items. As an infrequent visitor however, there are places that I might try on my return instead. If you do go, and innards are your thing, they're probably worth an order. If you do, I'll share this bit of overhead wisdom: "Eat them while they're hot, otherwise they get rubbery. " read more

Other than Bojangles' (a minimum 3-hour drive from Athens), local favorite Miller's outperforms all chain chicken franchises. Courtney P. pretty much nailed it in her review, except the coleslaw deserves a higher rating than "meh" (creamy and on the sweet side with more prominent relish taste than the usual "American" coleslaw - lovely). Try the jalapeño poppers, too. Still pick-up only, but the food came out fast even on a busy Saturday. read more

The fried chicken tastes like it was made in your mom's kitchen. Crunchy and flavorful and not greasy. I haven't tried many other things but I like they have a variety of items, including fish, shrimp and various chicken parts that we Southerners sometimes really appreciate (livers). Cheap, fast and delicious! What more could you want? This is a local Athens favorite, and for good reason. In addition to fried chicken, they have a wide selection of sides as well as gizzards, liver and hearts (which is pretty rare, and you'll pretty much never get to order in a chain restaurant). There is a lot of seating at Miller's, although it's definitely convenient to park right in front and get your food to go. They have a space for parking, so if street parking irks you then you don't have to worry about that here. read more

Fried chicken is just plain average. Not sure what the buzz is about but some folks are into chicken livers and hearts and other nasty organs not fit for human consumption. Better to have one piece of KFC than two pieces of Millers. They say they been making fried chicken for 60 years - they prob. shouldn't mention that. How many more years do these people need to figure it out? With three days and an internet connection I could come up with better fried chicken than that. It's a situ where owners are entranced by the tradition of it, and afraid to change great grandma's recipe. And they've been flattered so many times, they are deluded by their own average chicken. This chicken is delicious. It really doesn't get any better than this. I graduated a couple years ago from OU and I still crave their crispy, juicy 5 piece meal (usually it's more like a 7 piece, because they're awesome). Their fries are solid. Their chicken hearts are phenomenal (like, really, seriously.) Don't be scurred and branch out from the usually Court Street fare. Miller's Chicken is the real deal Holyfield of chicken--knockout flavor, reasonable prices and DUDE, those chicken hearts. And, the sides are NOT average at all. Creamy mac-n-cheese, crisp fries... I found myself in Athens, Ohio this week. Drove by this place and had to stop. I mean, if you look at pics of the outside, you have to step in. Let me say I am a HUGE fan of Hot Chicken Takeover in Columbus and fried chicken in general. Trust me when I say that this is the real deal. Bona fide. Wonderful. You order at the counter. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. None of that "if you don't know how it's done here, you are an idiot" attitude you find in so many places. You place your order and go sit down. They bring you your food. The place is old and simply furnished. But who cares? The clientele is a m ix of regular working folk, students, and newbies like me. All are serious about the chicken. I had a breast and a thigh. The thighs are smallish so they brought two for the same price. The chicken is moist (even the breast) and perfectly cooked. Full of flavor on its own. The crust is crispy, flavorful without being overly spiced and comes off as you bite through it, without huge pieces of it breaking off at once. It is incredible chicken. If someone did not order chicken, they ordered fried whitefish which was very popular also. I noticed everyone else ordered sides, from mac'n'cheese, to slaw, to beans,etc. They all looked great and didn't last long on the table. I would imagine they are great also but cannot say for sure. I ordered sweet tea and it was tooth-hurting sweet. Only off note. This is rightfully an institution (been around in some form since 1947, a good year) in Athens. And worthy of the highest praise. Yes to the chicken! Heavy breaded chicken is king in Maryland. This chicken in Athens is perfection. This fried chicken let's the chicken come thru without the breading being center stage. Lightly spiced and not salty. Hit it with some of your fav hot sauce, done. Breast's were not dry. Thighs were great. Gizzards are fully cooked with just a little "chew"! Onion rings were the real deal. Will stop by this establishment every time I'm in Athens. Walking distance from my kids apartment. Awesome! read more

I expect my fried chicken to be tender, juicy, flavorful, and crunchy of these Miller's was only juicy. I had a breast, thighs, and onion rings. Of the 3 I would only order the onion rings again. The thighs were tiny, basically 2 bite size, had no flavor and were tough. The breast was of good size but also tough and stringy. The coating was under-seasoned and not that crunchy, it did stay on when you bit into it but most would come off when I tried to chew through the skin. When you order everything is a-la carte, so no lunch or dinner specials. The place is mainly in a residential area and off the beaten tract of Athens. It is fairly small, you go up to the counter to order, looks to have about 10 tables. Overall the chicken was below average, under seasoned and tough. read more

Was a student who lived near here 41 years ago, but never knew it existed until the Internet! Very juicy meat and great crust. Crust lacks a decided taste, but the texture and the meat give it an edge to the similarly prepared Barberton chicken restaurants like Hopocan Gardens. No atmosphere to speak of, even for a fried chicken joint. So come for lunch. Worthwhile for chicken aficionados. read more

I only have two complaints about this place. The first is that they took the oysters off the menu quite awhile ago. They need to bring them back, it's the only place I know in town that you could have gotten them. The other thing is that once in awhile the batter is too salty. I guess it depends on who made it that morning??? But you can always count on juicy, fresh, amazing chicken. I love gizzards, and hearts. The fish is very good, too! Nothing fancy here-- but to see how fresh the chicken is, all you have to do is look out back. This is hands-down the best fried chicken in Central Ohio. Might be a good local spot, but if you are from out of town, don't expect to feel welcome. My family and I stopped at Miller's Chicken on the way to Columbus, and I must say I left feeling annoyed and disappointed. The fried chicken is definitely what they known for, but I would not stray to far too far from there. If the kids want nuggets, you could find better option in the frozen food isle. The service was the absolute worst part. After simply taking our order, the woman at the register simply looked past us and asked for the next customer, while we were still asking her about our order. read more

By far, the best sit-down eatery in Athens. Their chicken is super crisp and juicy. Their fish is very flakey and fried to perfection. I've never had a bad meal here. It can be pricey, but totally worth every penny. Athens is lucky to have such an amazing small business that feels like you're eating at grandma's kitchen table. This place is for working folks who like fried chicken. If you are looking for that commercial bland tasting type of chicken joint go elsewhere. This place serves various fried chicken gizzards as well. The chicken is very flavorful with a good crispness. The cooler has several options to choose from as well. Oh Miller's, why are you so tasty? (I suppose it has to do with the fact that you are deep fried...) Athens has more then it's share of fantastic eateries, it seems like this town can do no wrong in any genre of food. This includes fried chicken. Millers offers napkin staining heaps of chicken, sold in big buckets. It is family run, and has been around a long time. Besides chicken, they sell many other fried delights, including just about every type of fried vegetable. They also have many equally good sides, such as biscuits, mac and cheese, and potato salad. Simple, no frills restaurant that serves just plain old fantastic chicken and some other very yummy stuff to go along with it. I'm not sure, but I think this place has been around forever, and they just keep consistently making good food. It's definitely off the beaten path, and I love to hear stories of how people have found it accidentally when they were driving around somewhat lost or looking for something else. We feel it is definitely well worth an occasional drive from our home in Columbus. If you want to make it a truly complete Athens experience, grab a bucket from Miller's and head to Strouds Run on a nice day. read more
