We had a reservation for tonight for a college reunion group and they called us today to let us know that they couldn't fit us at the same table. After getting this information we decided to cancel this reservation. We love the food at Millie's but the management is lacking. The manager then called us back to ask us if we know how a business is ran since we canceled our reservation 1.5 hours before hand. I ate here this morning for the first time. The menu for breakfast and brunch was a bit non traditional - If what you are looking for is heavy quality traditional breakfast plates - What I was in search of - this probably isn't the place for you. The breakfast offerings were around $12-14 a plate - a lot of mixes of things like salmon, seafood types - mixed in skillets etc with poached eggs, tomatoes, green peppers etc. I had their braised pork with potatoes, green peppers and 2 poached eggs - Also in there were vegetables and hollandaise was a standard ingredient which I skipped. The service was decent prompt friendly. All of the servers were your typical young tattooed female hipsters. I had the malibu dream which was sort of like a mimosa in a pint glass $9 - a bit overpriced. Out the door the meal was pretty pricey at $25 + tip. What this place lacks is breakfast options that are a bit more standard in addition to their eclectic meals. There are going to be customers like myself who just want something simple - even one option like eggs, potatoes bacon etc The place is your typical tiny cramped greasy spoon. I was very excited to try this place with my mother but sadly it was a disappointing experience. I am aware Millie's is known for their "mess" so I ordered the cajun kind, and was highly disappointed - first few bites are interesting, but after you cannot eat anymore, as the dish relies almost completely on cheese and you get this sickening feeling in your stomach. The side of potatoes were good however. My mom's seafood wrap was only okay - she felt that the stuffing was covered in too much mayonnaise. read more

I give Millie's a solid 3.5 stars. We came this past Saturday, it was packed (duh), but we got a Bloody Mary and Watermelon Mimosa and were content to wait. When we were seated at the bar I was abruptly told no when I asked if I could have the eggs benedict with bacon instead of ham. I then asked if I could just have it without meat, to which our waitress rolled her eyes and went over to ask the cook. I didn't realize you're not allowed to modify any of the dishes, otherwise I'd have picked something else. They agreed to make it with bacon, but the yolk of my poached eggs was completely solid, so it kind of spoiled the overall dish. My fiance got the omelette special with ham and crab but said he thought they'd left the ham out. We enjoyed it overall and will give it another chance. Millie's is a go-to when I want to go out and know I will like whatever I order. With the booming foodie environment of Richmond, I know I can always count on Millie's to serve excellent food with great service. Other places in town are great but I haven't been to many, if any, that consistently leave me satisfied more than this place. Every entree and appetizer has been awesome (get anything with soft shell crab when in season!) and the desserts are delicious! Drinks, food, service, price for what you get? All fantastic! straight up- favorite restaurant in the city! I always get the same thing, spicy shrimp, and I love it every time. My husband has gotten the duck and the lamb, both of which were delicious. Its a great date place :) Also a wonderful brunch. Be sure to sit in the back though, because sometimes it can get really hot up front by the kitchen. read more

Overrated. Food is ok, but not worth dealing with the crazy long waits, the unfriendly staff, expensive drink prices and the place is way too small and cramped. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Poe's. Its less crowded, friendlier, and the chef is a former chef from Millies...also they don't split checks so bring cash if you're going with a large group. read more

we have gone to Millie's for years, used to live on church hill and walked down every Saturday morning and we have been for dinner many times...but haven't been in about year. the hassle of waiting and parking in the area has gotten much worse through the years. of course, we knew to get there early. they open at 10, ok this Saturday it was 1006 when they opened the doors. we were behind a group of 4 and two women. we were seated and had water within a minute. great, everything is going well. so, we ordered after getting our first coffee. 2 devil messes... after 2 coffees and seems like forever we noticed others that came in after us getting food orders. we asked the waitress after flagging her down and how much longer as we had been waiting for the order for 30 minutes. she said, "that is not unusual, the cooks are working hard back there" basically, she was telling us to shove it and we should be happy to be waited on and to shut up and wait. she was curt and short with her answer. she could have saved the day and gotten a better tip if she had said simply, "oh no, let me check on it". since we were sitting in front of the cook station we noticed her talking to another waitress and then I noticed our order slip on the cook station as the last one as being added. either the waitress screwed up or the cooks lost the original order. it was clear she was trying to get the cooks to rush the dm's while her back was towards us. we finished our 3rd cup of coffee and I had my water glass filled twice while waiting for my dm. we noticed other folks who came in well after us including a family of 4 leaving after having brunch and we are still waiting to get dm's. the waitress then brought us toast...well, warmed bread, popped in the toaster and right back out. not exactly toast, but I did not want to ask the waitress for anything. Millie's - the dm is still good and the coffee is not great as it used to be, but it is not worth the wait we endured. it was not crazy busy, I have seen Millie's jam packed and lines out the door and never had to wait that long for my food. we should have not left a tip for Kiara but we did 10%, hopefully, she shares with the server giving us water and coffee - that server was the only reason we left a tip. one star for the worst service from Kiara. it ruined our morning and meal. and because of the rotten service and attitude, Millie's rates one star. in the past, I always had decent service and great food which would garner 4 stars, but not this time. and one other thing, since Millie's is not a diner and has upscale prices, why is there a beer pitcher tipping jar for the cooks/chefs? shouldn't Millie's pay them a decent wage? will we return, most likely and hopefully, there will be a staffing change and service will improve. but it will take me awhile to get over this poor episode of service. poor service will bring down Millie's and wait staff income will suffer too. read more

The food here is TERRIFIC! We were in Richmond for one night and were looking for a place that had good, mellow ambiance, and a great menu. The food was fresh, the menu amazingly inventive, the service terrific..... and by all means, this is NOT a diner! It reminds me of the little food enclaves that you 'discover' in NYC and then return to often... and don't tell too many people because you never want it to get too crowded. Sounds like its crowded for brunch... but if you are driving through Richmond, love food, and have standards set in foodie areas like NYC or SF, then Millie's is a great choice for Richmond. read more

I've walked and drove past Millie's Diner numerous times. It's always a line outside the door especially on weekends. Since I live in the downtown area, I decided to walk over for lunch during the week because parking can be a hassle. Millie's began to get very busy after we were seated. The restaurant was busy for a weekday but not as busy as brunch on weekends. The menu items are written on a blackboard. Millie's specials of the day are placed at each table and the bar. I ordered the Cajun mess (scrambled eggs, spicy andouille sausage, crawfish, tomatoes, onions, and cheese) and a marinated flank steak sandwich. Most meals are served with house potatoes. My Cajun mess was good. The ingredients blended well together with some spiciness. The marinated flank steak sandwich was delicious. The steak was grilled and seasoned very well. I'm definitely a fan of the flank steak sandwich (my favorite). Millie's house potatoes are tasty. The dessert choices are limited. I chose the khalua pound cake over chocolate espresso cake. I'm glad I chose the khalua pond cake with salted caramel gelato. The pound cake and gelato was delicious!!! I wanted to take a pint of the salted caramel gelato home with me. Service was average. The employees were friendly. Arriving early is vital if you don't want to wait for a long time to be seated. Millie's Diner is a good choice for lunch in Downtown Richmond. read more

Went to Brunch, the atmosphere is nice however the menu is too specialized and there was nothing for those who just want eggs and meat. The menu items sound delicious, but the Soft scrambled eggs and lobster with hollandaise sauce was tasteless...still not sure what was the purpose of the flaky pastry "perched" on top. If you are not a spice eaterm you should skip the complimentary home fries. The home fries were laden in cumin and oregano and were beyond spicy. I was so disappointed. read more

After all the hype about this place it fell pretty short in terms of food, service and overall just places to brunch in RVA. I was sadly disappointed with the service most of all. Our server, Kiara (whom I would normally not name - but felt it was necessary, because she made quite an impression on the entire table), was anything but pleasant and welcoming. She not only seemed inconvenienced that she had to serve us without our full party being there, but she tried to overcharge us for one of our plates, and when asked about it acted like it wasn't a big deal (I'm sorry but a $1 goes a long way). I guess they felt because gratuity was added automatically, because it was a group of 7, they could treat us poorly, and brush off any of our needs as customers. Honestly, it was some of the worst service we have ever received, and I worked in the restaurant business for over 4 years, so I know how it goes down. Lastly, the food was okay. I've had better in many of the places that aren't as famous as this one. And this is coming from a foodie! Millie's is easy to find...just follow the scent of roasted potatoes and onions down the cute neighborhood street! Millie's was hoppin' around brunch time and there was a line out the door when we arrived at 1:00 ish. The good news is that the line moves at a reasonable pace and most people went inside to grab a mimosa or bloody mary to help pass the time. My friends and I followed suit and ordered a bloody mary, mimosa and jack & coke and easily found a 4 person table outside where we could relax until they called our name. There are only 4 outside tables available but they rotate out rather quickly. The bloody mary made me quite toasty and after I finally mentioned it to my friends, they informed me that indeed the bartender had poured approx 1/2 cup of vodka in it - it did the trick! My friend's shirley temple was alright. They skimped on the cherries and it was her bday so ya know, they could have whipped out a few more! Drinks were $8 a piece. Once our name was called we were escorted to a booth by the bar area. There is not a lot of seating and the venue is quite small and loud. There are no menus. You instead order from a blackboard hanging on the wall. Their fare consists primarily of egg dishes. As a vegetarian there were a few options available for me - a BLT (I do eat bacon on occasion), a black bean and cheese burrito and there was one other option that I cannot remember. Both of my tablemates had the fried egg with sausage. They liked the egg but not the sausage. The BLT was tasty since the bacon was super thin and crispy. We all tried the potatoes and that was definitely the best part - a must order! Service was okay. They are pretty busy so I am sure it's tough to keep up but they could have stayed on top of the water a little more. Parking was pretty easy - 1hr to 2hr spots available but with the wait times, you might be pushing it. The bathrooms are located downstairs with an interesting setup, each bathroom (male and female) have a toilet inside, but a communal sink is outside. Be careful of the steep stairs. Worth a trip if you are in the area. A weekday might be better. read more

First to say that the food was very good. We had a rough experience, however, with our treatment. Our waitress seemed rushed the entire meal. At the end of our meal she did not ask if we wanted anything else and handed us our bill. We asked if we could possibly order another drink (we had not even been there an hour) to which our waitress said, "No. We have a thirty minute wait for this table. If you want a drink you can have it outside." It was not warm outside and this was after ordering a decent amount of food from this establishment. I just could not believe how rudely we were treated. The food here is good, I will give it that, although the brunch drinks for what they are (rail) are ridiculously overpriced at $8, particularly for a mimosa. Also, and this was the most absurd part, they aren't willing to break up your check by person and what each person ordered, but only equally by just splitting the check however many ways. If this is because their point of service system is defunct or their waitresses are too daft to understand how to break up a check I don't know, but it leaves a bizarre and ridiculous burden on the patron. As if it's our fault we can't bring exact change to pay each tab exactly without their being an issue with bank cards, which now everyone uses. I also live in Church Hill. I don't go to Millie's, although their food is good, it's $$$$- $40pp minimum. That is prohibitive for a regular visit. The restaurant is small, it is extremely noisy, and their hot line (kitchen) is at the front door, which contributes to the noise, heat, smoke and kitchen smells. For some that makes it homey, but when I go out, I am trying to get AWAY from that. Yes, their food is creative and good and they do neat things there...it is well loved and they're great people to patronize. But considering the prices, I prefer a different atmosphere. read more

It has a very southern sounding name, but the cooks are actually British. The wine selection is extensive and they probably carry more bottles than your average wine bar. I had the Devil's Mess since that is what everyone is raving about. It was yummy! My wife and I stopped into Millie's the weekend of the VCU Final Four game against Butler, and the place was really jumpin'! Lots of young people (and a few old people like us), high energy, mimosas and bloody marys all packed into a restaurant the size of most people's living room --- it was great!! We waited for a table standing in the main aisle of the restaurant (with everyone else), and enjoyed mimosas while we felt a little like we were standing in a crouded Metro car, without the movement. Once seated, we really enjoyed the slightly upscale diner food. The specialty here is a series of "messes," which are mixtures of various well seasoned and fresh ingredients all blended and prepared in a single skillet, usually with an egg base. Especially recommended are the Devil's Mess and Castro's Mess, made with shredded pork prepared Cuban-style. Millie's also makes a couple of dessert cakes themselves, which looked great. We got there around 9:30 on a Sunday and didn't have to wait; however, the line was down the street when we left. I had the Tomato, Avocado, and Cheddar omelette which was gigantic, but delicious. I love Millies, I have for years. Its one of my favorite institutions. That said, I have to say something about my recent visit. As usual, everything was very good except for one thing. I usually dont nitpick but this is one of my biggest pet peeves... salt. I had the scallop dish and the scallops themselves were done perfectly, but they were served in a mushroom broth that was so briny it was almost inedible. In fact, it was inedible. Too much salt absolutely ruins it for me. Its cooking 101 kitchen dudes. An easy fix. read more

The mimosas came in pint glasses for God's sake. I ordered the Castro's Mess and it was the most delicious egg concoction ever experienced. My boyfriend, who never takes food to go...could not resist taking the rest of his "Devil's Mess" with us. I'm not sure if he's the owner or the manager, but the British gentleman who sat us and later gave me a Millie's CD Compilation as a birthday present was absolutely charming. This restaurant is located in a neat location within the city with a quaint atmosphere that can range from intimate date spot to casual brunch. At dinner I lean towards the Pan Seared Scallops, they are both flavorful and tender. Additionally the Bistro Tender is a great choice as well, with a cooked to order steak and delicious dash of sweet potato. I'm salivating just thinking about the messes (basically an egg dish with a bunch of delicious food and cheese all scrambled up).
